Chapter 42
20:20, 7 April 2013Kai's POV
I turned my head to come face to face with an older woman. She looked around fifty years old. She had a few grey hairs that were soon to blossom into a full head, and a few wrinkles. She was wearing a green shirt with jeans and sneakers. Her hair was tied back into a ponytail as well. She had a calm expression but it was also a bit frightened one.
"I-I-" I couldn't get myself to speak.
This is one of the few people I have seen other than my captor since he's taken me. I could actually talk without having the fear of him abusing me when I get back in private with him. I can actually talk normal with her. With that thought in mind I leaped forward and gave her a hug. I began to cry and held her tight as if she might leave.
I don't want her to leave, I want to stay with her. I feel protected, I'm finally with someone other than him. My tears soaked up her shirt and she stood tense and confused.
After a while, she probably felt bad and rubbed my back encouragingly even though she had no clue who I was.
"Shh..." She cooed.
After about three minutes of her letting me hug her she pulled away.
"Who are you?" She asked again.
I looked up at her. She looked upset or sad, probably she felt bad for me. I don't care that I came off as weak, I think this may mean I'm saved.
"K-Kai." I said sniffling.
"Where did you come from?" She questioned.
I didn't even notice she was holding a rag before.
"I don't know. I was kidnapped and I-I just ran away. I have no idea where I am, where are we?" I asked unsteadily.
She gasped at the news and walked over to me while placing a hand on my back. She began to lead me to the nice looking house.
"Oh dear, let's freshen you up okay?" She asked softly.
I nodded my head as we walked into her house.
The house was beautiful. There was wooden floorboard and picture frames lining the walls. There was two living rooms with beautiful furniture however there was no television. The kitchen was simple, and had a beautiful and homey interior.
The dining room had a long table that was meant to fit a large family. The chandelier hanging over the table was massive.
She led me up the stairs down a long hallway passing a numerous amount of doors until we came upon a bathroom.
"Stay here, I'll fetch you some linens." She instructed.
I nodded small, and waited for him to come back.
She went down a corridor and out of my sight. All was queit and I peered around scoping out her house.
It was breathtaking and comfortable. The scent was indescribable, but if I had to describe it, I could say it smelled like a type of food. Perhaps it was because she cooked alot.
She quickly returned with folded clothing and a towel. She handed them to me and opened the bathroom. She ushered me inside and stood at the door.
"When you are done showering come downstairs, I'll cook you something to eat alright dear?" She asked but more like instructed.
I nodded as she shut the door behind her. I locked in just in case. She seemed like a trustworthy lady but you could never be sure.
I stepped into the shower and let the cool water run over my body. It felt nice considering I haven't taken a shower in a while. The cool water made my aching of my body feel better and gave me a clean feeling. Once I stood there for a bit I began to wash all the muck and dirt out of my hair. I then proceeded to wash my body with a bar of soap and rinse it off.
I turned off the shower and stepped out and wrapped myself in the towel the nice lady provided me with. I dried off my body and examined the clothes she gave me. It was a blue shirt and a pair of overalls and undergarments. I gladly put it on and I looked like someone who worked on a farm.
I smiled as I looked at my reflection. I was clean. I put the towel into the hamper in the bathroom and opened the bathroom door. I remembered which way the stairs was and went downstairs.
I smelled a new scent which was definitely cooking. The scent was mouthwatering. I was about to step into the kitchen until I saw the lady and a man at the dining room table.
The table was already set up with three sets up plates and silverware. In the middle of the table there was already set for eating.
The lady and the man were already seated across from each other. The lady pointed to the empty seat to tell me to sit. I did.
They began to fill their plates and I copied them. I filled it up with turkey, mashed potatoes, and string beans. I began to eat and almost moaned at the great tasting food. After a beat of silence with the only sound coming from the clicking of the silverware hitting the plates the lady spoke,
"I'm Karen dear, and this is Jack my husband." She said.
I smiled at both of them. Jack was a bit heavy and also wore overalls. He had brown hair and a small brown mustache.
"Hello." I paused, "Your house is lovely." I complimented.
Jack smiled, "Thank you. If you don't mind me asking what happened?"
I paused knowing I'd need to give some sort of explanation.
"Uhh I was kidnapped by a man. I basically just ran away when I had the chance and have been walking the dirt road for about a day. I don't know where I was going, just civiliaztion I guess."
They nodded until Karen said, "Dear, you will not be able to find civilization by foot. It's a long way to the nearest town. It's quite dangerous as well."
"Oh." I softly spoke, "Then why do you live here?" I asked.
"Well Karen and I took the family house. And we are also farmers who need a large plot of land for our farm. So it only makes sense. Plus it's quite quiet here." He said.
I nodded and continued eating.
"Tomorrow Karen can take you to the nearest town if you'd like to the police station. It could get all sorted out there if you'd like. It's too late to make the trip to the town now." Jack said.
I nodded and smiled, "That'd be perfect." I said.
We continued eating until Jack asked, "What did this person who took you look like?"
I shrugged, "Repulsive."
He nodded probably noticing I wasn't really excited about talking about him.
After dinner I helped with the dishes. I was just now getting ready for bed, after all I haven't had a real good sleep in a long time.
I was about to get under my sheets until Karen walked in.
"Dear, would you like to join me out in the barn?" She asked while walking inside.
Although I was tired I decided to go with her. She was very friendly and kind to me after all.
We walked into the brisk night air and I felt the safety of the barn. Even though my captor probably wasn't that far away, I still felt safe.
We approached the barn as Karen opened the doors.
Inside there were four horses and seven cows. They all looked healthy and happy. Something I wish I could say the same about me.
Karen lead me over to one of the stables and let me go inside. She followed me in and shut the gate behind us. I sat on one of the stools and so did she. We were in the same stall as a cow. She was a really heavy cow.
"She's pregnant." Karen said while petting her.
I nodded my head understanding why she was heavy.
"Why did you choose to turn down this road?" Karen asked.
I realized she meant why did I turn down the road to her house. I don't really know why, perhaps it was luck?
"I'm not sure, I mean I saw the mailbox and all but I had nothing to lose so I just did." There was nothing really to it actually.
"I mean, it's pretty scary on the way into the house, don't you think?" She asked.
I shrugged, "Yeah I mean it was dark on the way inside to the farm but other than that I mean not really... why?"
"We tried to make it seem abandoned so people won't wander onto the farm."
"Oh." I paused, "sorry."
"No need to be sorry! I didn't mean it like that, dear we are glad you came." She quickly said.
It got quiet and the only sounds came from the cows mooing or the horses neighing.
"Are you happy to be going home tomorrow?" Karen asked.
I grinned a little, "I'm scared but yeah happy."
"Why is that?" She asked.
I shrugged, "I mean I've been gone for quite a while, I wonder if anything has changed."
"Change may not always seem good, but you have to trust it changed for a reason."
"I suppose so." I replied.
"Who is waiting for you back home?" She curiously questioned.
I smiled, "Harry."
Just saying his name brought butterflies to my stomach.
"Who is Harry?"
I smiled once again, "my boyfriend."
"Oh dear, he must be worried sick. I would let you call however we don't have a phone. We don't have much use for them."
"No need, I will be there soon enough." I smiled.
