Sana obviously knew about the Transfer Student before she arrived.

Kim Chungha from another high school in Gangnam. When Sana saw her in person, she was much taller than she expected and a lot prettier too. It was obvious that her profile picture had been from a while ago.

"Hello. I'm Kim Chungha." she said dryly without a trace of a smile. That was it. Then she made her way to the back of the class, avoiding eye contact with everyone, but glanced quickly at Jun before she sat down in the seat on the row next to him.

Sana's smile dropped when Chungha ignored her and turned to look at Seulgi who shrugged. Irene who sat in front of Sana, next to Chanyeol turned to look at her best friends, then at the new student with a strange gaze.

Chungha didn't talk to Hoshi, her desk mate, except for a quiet "Hello" to respond to his wave. She stayed in class during lunch break, even though Hoshi and Sana offered to go down to the cafeteria with her. When Sana was on her way back to their homeroom alone, she saw Chungha walking towards the class from the far end of the corridor, a black pouch in her hands.

When she looked up and saw Sana, she stuffed it quickly into her pocket and broke eye contact.

Sana didn't think twice about it since she could guess why the other girl acted like that, and went into the classroom to read and listen to music.

Their new Principal and her secretary arrived after lunch. Classes were disrupted temporarily so she could make a video announcement.

The Principal introduced herself as Ms. Kang and her secretary was Mrs. Moon. All the students were shocked at how young and pretty they looked; their old Principal was nearly sixty and wasn't exactly a sight to see. His secretary wasn't much better. Ms. Kang had short, brown hair that hardly reached her shoulders, and her eyes seemed to match her hair color as well. She had a slightly pointy nose and high cheekbones. Her smile was brightened by dimples and two rows of straight pearly whites. She had on a cool blue blouse and pretty diamond-encrusted dangling earrings.

Fashion sense, approved! Sana thought with a little smile.

Principal Kang spoke with the low, calm voice of an announcer and sounded genuinely excited to have been selected as the new Principal. "I look forward to working with all of you guys, and I've planned lots more fun additions, so get your hopes up!" she told them merrily. "You can look forward to more trips, events, sports, clubs! You've got new, young blood running this school, and I can tell you it's gonna be fun and vibrant! Thank you for your attention and listen to your teachers...but not all the time, though." She finished her last sentence in a whisper, then winked with a smile before it ended.

A bubbly murmur rippled through the class and a few chuckles could be heard. Principal Kang was almost too good to be true.

Ms. Nam, their English teacher, knocked the board ruler on the front desk to get their attention again. "Okay~ now back to our lesson...you can forget about her last comment," Ms. Nam said, her face lined with disapproval. "You'd better pay attention in my class and—Wen Junhui!" His name sounded for the eighth time that day. "Stop dancing and focus!"

A couple of students snickered.

While classes had resumed, someone had put up large, colorful posters with the list of new school activities that were going to be introduced. At their next recess, students crowded excitedly around notice boards to read them.

"Wow..." Seulgi breathed. "This woman is really cool!" Sana and Irene smiled next to her. "She's bringing overnight trips; archery and dance clubs; funfairs; career days; Halloween, Christmas, New Year's and Summer parties; prom; debate, film and sports clubs—"

"Enough, Seulgi!" Irene snapped at her, "We can read, alright?" Seulgi rolled her eyes at her friend and made a face. Sana chuckled.

"She really is something," Sana said under her breath.

Yes, Principal Kang really was something. Just before school let out, she visited each class to formally greet the students and tell them that there would be a proper assembly the next day.

Any other Principal would have done that via video and seldom in person, but not Ms. Kang. The students fed off her positive energy and excitement and there were many laughs and bright sounds that filled the air and darkening sky. Principal Kang had dismissed them earlier than usual, and told them that their extra study hours were going to be cut by 50% because "studying wasn't everything."

The more serious students weren't too pleased, but even their bitter mood couldn't dampen the spirits of the free high-schoolers.

Chungha walked down the road to the school gates alone, having declined Hoshi's kind offer to go with her. She was just really shy and didn't feel in the mood to talk much to anyone. She knew she was letting her mother down; it had been her mother's wish for her to make lots of friends on the first day.

"Sorry mum," she said to herself. Then she puther airpods in, shoved her hands in her pockets and kept walking.
