Prologue: Brianna's Big Idea

"Alex!"

"What?" I call back to my best friend, who I'm guessing is in her room. I put a spoonful of my Lucky Charms into my mouth, waiting for her response.

She didn't yell back, though, instead I hear some thumping. Brianna rushes into the kitchen, frantically waving her arms around.

"Alex," she says out of breath. "I have a brilliant idea!"

"What now?" I mumble. You see, we share an apartment and I'm the only one who has a job. Which isn't that good having only me buying food, paying rent. Especially since I have a stupid job that gives little pay.

I really need a better job, but I don't know. I guess I can't risk loosing everything if it doesn't work out.

"Don't be like that! This is a good one this time," she starts. I nod for her to go on with the idea.

"You see, there's this new movie coming out," she trails off. "And they are holding auditions like 5 miles away."

"So you want to audition?" I ask. That idea isn't completely bad. It would get her money, and she'd see famous people and all that jazz.

"No. I want us to audition," she corrects. Hold up.

"Nope nope nope, I am not auditioning," I say, shaking my head so fast, I'm surprised I don't have whiplash. She pouts.

"Please Alex!" She begs.

"No."

"Please, I'll give you something!" She offers. "I'll give you 20 bucks."

"You don't even have 20 bucks." I reply.

"I'll-uh...buy you food." She says. Food does sound good right about now. Only, I would be the one paying for it, so no use really.

"But you'd eat it."

"I promise I won't!" She counters. "Please?".

"No." I say and she frowns.

"Why not?"

"Because I don't want to audition. You can all you want, but I don't wanna." I tell her. She's silent for a while, so I take another bite of my cereal.

"But I don't wanna do this alone," she whines. "C'mon there might even be a cute boy who's also auditioning," she bribes. Not working.

"No."

"What can I do to change your mind?!" She exclaims. I look over at the sink, filthy dishes lying messily all in/around it. It's literally piling up, and it looks like a mountain.

"I will audition-"

"YES!"

"If you clean the dishes for a month," I say and smirk. She hates doing the dishes. Her smile falls slightly.

"Okay!" She says. "It's just dishes right? Anyways, in a bit they will call you and tell you when your audition is."

I freeze.

"You already signed us up?" I asked confused. "When did this happen?"

"Yesterday."

"And what made you think I'd actually agree?" I ask raising an eyebrow. She shrugs.

"I'd get you to agree one way or another."

I groan, putting my face in between my hands.

"There's no getting out of this is there?" I ask, and she shakes her head. I sigh.

"Well I'm off to shopping!" She exclaims and runs off.

"Don't spend to much!" I yell back.

"Yeah yeah," She says waving her hand and I roll my eyes.

I look down at my half eaten cereal.

"Finally, we are alone," I mumble and put my spoon into the bowl.

All of a sudden, the phone rings. I can't even finish my cereal without any interruptions. I get up and pick up the phone.

"Hello?" I say, a bit grumpily if I'm being honest.

"Alex?" A voice says. I immediately recognize it as my co-worker.

"This is she."

"You're late!" She exclaims. I look at the clock. 11:07.

"Shit! Sorry I lost track of time!" I explain running over to the kitchen table and grab my phone and keys.

"Now hurry if you don't wanna be fired!" I end the call and run out the door and lock it.

There goes my cereal.

~

"Can I take your order?" I ask the teenage girl and boy sitting in the table in front of me.

"I'd have a coke please," the boy said and smiled at me. I nod and write it down.

"Do you have anything without carbs, calories, or fat?" The girl asks, with a high, squeaky voice. I look at the boy and give him a sympathetic smile. I'm so sorry for him.

I watched a movie before that had a situation like this...What was the response?

"Yeah...water," I say and give a sarcastic smile. She gasps. Bingo.

"I'll talk to your manager about this!" She exclaims. I give her a bored look.

"I'd totally quit, but I can't or else I'll become poor and homeless," I say.

"Save your sob story for someone who cares." She scuffs. "Do I look like I care?"

"You look like you never eat," I mumble and the boy snickers. She glares at me and says she'd like a water. I nod and give a fake smile, then walk to the kitchen.

Then the phone rings. I wait for someone to answer it, but no one does.

"Wow, don't all jump at once," I say and pick up the phone.

"Hello, this is the Hollywood Diner. How may I help you?"

"Is this Alex Hudson?" A woman asks. I nod, but forget she can't see me.

"Yeah.." I say confused as to why she's calling.

"Your audition is at 2," she says plainly. She obviously doesn't like her job.

"Thanks," I tell her. Why are they calling my work? Didn't Brianna give them my cell phone number?

She says a plain 'you're welcome,' then says bye.

"Wow, some people," I say, raising my eyebrows at my phone.

*Briannas POV *

I walk out the door and start walking towards the car. We can't afford more than one car, so we share it. Her work isn't that far from our apartment, so she insists on walking.

I drive to the mall which is about 15 minutes away. The whole time I'm singing (or yelling) the lyrics to the songs on the radio.

"My heart's a stereo, it beats for you so listen close," I sang softly this time, as I pull into a parking space.

I get out of the car and lock it.

"Make me your radio, and turn me up when you feel low," I sang under my breath as I walk into Hollister.

I look around for a bit, before I find a pink hang-off-the-shoulder shirt that has blue lettering.

I look for my size and then take it off the rack. I continue to look for clothes when I feel satisfied with what I chose.

I walk to the check out line and there's no one waiting. I put the black dress on the table.

"That would be $50.06," the cute cashier told me, placing my things in a plastic bag. I reach into my purse, taking out a fifty dollar bill and a one dollar bill. "Thank you, have a great day."

"You too," I smile, picking up my bag and walking towards the exit.

Alex doesn't normally like me shopping-since its a waste of money- but I just had to buy this dress. It would be perfect for my audition, and I have to look good and professional, right? A simple, sophisticated, black dress would be great for my audition, and it certainly isn't a waste of money since I'm most likely going to wear this more than once.

Then my phone rings. "Yellow is the color," I say my normal greeting without even looking at the number.

"Miss Schap?" A woman I don't know, asked.

"Um, yes?" I ask.

"Your audition it at 12," the woman said.

"Oh, thank you. And sorry about my hello/greeting" I say chuckling a bit at my unprofessional greeting.

"Right. Goodbye," she says and hangs up.

Well someone's moody.

I look down at my phone and it's 11:43.

"Wow thanks for the telling me at the last minute, Lady," I mumble, not minding the weird look I'm getting from the stranger walking by me.

I walk through the parking lot, searching for my car.

Where the hell did I park?

I find my car 2 minutes later and run up to it. "Hey," I say into my phone once I called Alex.

"Hi," she says, and I hear a beep from the other side of the phone. She most likely is in the middle of walking home.

"So I may have, accidentally on purpose, bought a dress today," I admit, cutting to the chase. I hear her groan in frustration (not the sexual kind).

"How much?"

"51."

"Dammit, Brianna," she says, her voice sounding a bit mad. I unlock the car, getting into the drivers seat.

"Sorry, but it's important," I say, setting the bag with the dress on the passenger seat. "Its for my audition."

"Yeah, but it's probably only for your audition," she says. "I doubt you'll ever wear it again."

I shake my head-on though she can't see me...habit. "No, it's a simple, black dress. I doubt I'll just push it to the side. it's nice, and pretty. I'll wear it more than once."

"To what, my funeral?"

"No" I say, rolling my eyes. "People wear black dresses other than to funerals."

"Okay, whatever," Alex says, and I start up the car.

"Look, I'll return the dress afterwards, okay? I won't even take the tag off," I say, holding my phone in between my shoulder and my cheek, so I can buckle myself.

"Okay," she says.

"I'll see you at home," I say, saying a quick goodbye before hanging up. Then I begin to drive away, to the place the audition is taking place.
