again pt. 2

Kai 

Kit's back from school, humming and swinging her legs whilst perched on a stool in the kitchen with Gail, Adrian's stuffing his face with blueberries, because unfortunately, he got his obsession from my Pretty Pae, and Ava's colouring with coloured wax with Ellie.

It feels normal. Messy, yes, but this family is a messy mixture of two strangers who fell in love. And there's another tiny one coming, to add to the mix. 

I lean against the doorframe for a moment longer. Kit's humming off-key, Gail reminding her gently not to swing her legs so hard she topples the stool. Adrian's purple from the mouth down, already staining his fingers as he shovels handful after handful into his mouth with no shame whatsoever. Ava is happily scribbling chaos across the paper in front of her

"Your mom and I have something to tell you guys," I say. Everything stops for a moment. 

"It's good news," Paedyn promises, eyes soft when she looks at them. "We just thought... you should hear it from us first."

Adrian narrows his eyes, suspicious. "We're not getting rid of anyone, are we?"

Kit groans. "Adrian."

"What? I need to know."

"No," I say, biting back a laugh. "We're not getting rid of anyone."

"Quite the opposite, actually," Paedyn says, her hand slipping into mine. "We're adding someone."

Kit's eyes go wide. Adrian frowns, confused. Ava looks up from the paper.

"I'm having a baby," Paedyn says gently, her smile blooming despite how tired she looks. "You're going to have a new little brother or sister."

Silence.

Then—

"ANOTHER ONE?!" Adrian shouts.

Kit's hands fly to her mouth, but I can see the grin behind them. "Oh my gosh, really?!"

Paedyn nods. "Really."

"Great," Adrian mutters. "Can't wait."

But he's smiling. He's trying not to, but he is.

Kit slides off her stool and hugs Paedyn without a word, resting her head lightly against her. "I'm glad," she says quietly. "I'm really glad."

I catch Paedyn's eyes over Kit's shoulder, and for a second, it's just the two of us again, in the streets of Loot, where the deepest ocean meets the gray mist of the sea.
