Paedyn

Kai's hand is on my thigh, and the wind keeps tugging at the strands of my hair he tucked behind my ear.

The windows are rolled down, his car rumbling lazily down the neighborhood streets. It smells like his cologne and coconut sunscreen and the pink lemonade I'm sipping from the gas station cup he bought me ten minutes ago.

We've got the playlist going — the summer one we made last week at two in the morning.

"You excited?" he asks, glancing over finally.

"Obviously," I say, stretching my legs out across the dash. "Nazeera threatened my life if I didn't show up early."

He snorts and reaches over, letting his hand drift from my thigh to the inside of my wrist, tracing the little freckles there with the pad of his thumb.

"You look beautiful," he says.

I flush and take another sip of my lemonade. "You're not even looking at me."

"I don't have to."

God. He's annoying.

God. I'm obsessed with him.

Kai

I pull the car into the driveway, and Nazeera is standing there with a grinning Kenji with her hip popped out to the side and bougie looking sunglasses perched on her nose.

"Five minutes late," she announces as I open Paedyn's door for her. "You're lucky you're cute."

I grin. "Isn't she the most gorgeous human being on the planet?"

Paedyn rolls her eyes. "I'm literally early compared to Keefe," Paedyn says, hopping down in her flip-flops.

I close the trunk and toss Paedyn her tote bag. She catches it one-handed, already sliding her sunglasses up into her silver hair. It glints in the sunlight, just a little. She's dressed in an off-the-shoulder t-shirt with her light blue bikini peaking out, and a pair of jean shorts.

I slide an arm around her waist, and press a kiss to the bridge of her nose. She looks up at me and smiles, which sends butterflies rogue in my stomach.

"Young love. Disgusting." Kenji sighs.

"Jealousy doesn't look good on you," Paedyn says as she brushes past him.

We follow them around the side of the house, and the music gets louder — Unwritten blasting, because Keefe picked the playlist again.

The backyard is already full of colour — towels flung over chairs, flamingo and donut floaties bobbing in the pool.

Michael's trying to convince Annabeth to wear a ridiculous floppy hat. Percy's eating blue Takis straight from the bag, and Cassie and Dean are sitting with their legs in the shallow end.

Meanwhile, Kenji's already shirtless and pretending to stretch like he's about to enter an Olympic competition.

"This is it," he announces, cracking his neck. "This is the moment I reclaim my chicken fight crown. No mercy. No survivors. No one's safe."

"I drowned, like, three times last year, trying to carry your big back" Percy adds through a mouthful of Takis.

"You're the son of a sea god, you can't drown," Annabeth points out.

 Paedyn

Suddenly I hear Keefe yell "GUESS WHO'S HERE BITCHES," followed by an exasperated sigh from Sophie.

Keefe storms into the backyard like he owns the place—his infamous inflatable duck tucked under one arm

I glance at Kai, who's shaking his head but smiling. "That thing nearly killed Nazeera last time."

Keefe's grin only widens as he slaps the inflatable duck, like it's some legendary beast ready for battle.

Kenji eyes the pool like it's a battlefield, muscles flexing as he steps toward the water. Nazeera watches him for only a second too long. "Alright, who wants to see the king reclaim his throne?"

Sophie rolls her eyes but grins. "You mean watch you drown Percy again?"

"I didn't drown him," Kenji argues, hands on his hips. "He just... momentarily forgot how to swim. Under the weight of greatness."

Percy raises a blue Takis-covered finger. "I have trauma."

"You have sea god immunity," Kenji fires back. "You'll be fine."

Lia, perched on the diving board with her sunglasses tilted halfway down her nose, calls out, "Five bucks on Keefe getting dunked in under two minutes."

"Ten if he takes the duck down with him," Michael adds

I curl into Kai's side as the crowd gathers around the pool like it's the Olympics. His arm slides around my shoulders, fingers toying absentmindedly with the end of my hair.

"You placing a bet?" I ask, tipping my head toward him.

He grins. "I already won. I've got you."

The chicken fight is absolute chaos. Kenji and Keefe square off. Percy crouched under Kenji, grumbling complaints, and Sophie reluctantly supporting Keefe, muttering "this is so dumb" while hiding a smile.

"Oh my god the winner is Sophie hello? She's literally buff," Lia calls out. Sophie laughs.

Sophie laughs and adjusts her grip on Keefe's legs. "I'm only doing this so he'll stop begging. And because I like to win."

"Let's GO, Foster!" Keefe yells.

Sophie lunges.

Kenji yells, "NOW, SEA GOD!"

Percy stumbles, but somehow holds strong. Sophie's got the sheer strength advantage, but Kenji's got pure unhinged determination.

Cassie's cracking up on the sidelines, holding hands with Dean. "I don't think Percy's gonna make it."

Kenji roars like a man possessed.

And Percy's knees buckle.

There's a splash, and a tidal wave of water soaks Michael.

I'm laughing so hard I can barely breathe, and Kai presses a kiss to the top of my head.

Michael is towel-drying his hair as he says, "I did not sign up to be collateral damage."

Lia grabs his face and plants a kiss on his lips. "Compensation," she says.

"Guess who's on again!" Michael says, grinning.

Cassie kicks off her sandals and tugs Dean toward the water. He's still holding their half-eaten popsicles, looking bewildered but smitten.

Annabeth cannonballs with no warning, soaking Percy, who retaliates by flinging a fistful of water in her direction. She ducks under and comes up grinning.

Nazeera's already in, climbing into a donut float, and Kenji follows with a running leap.

Juliette slides into the shallow end, with Aaron following closely behind.

Sloane and Celine have somehow found a float big enough for both of them and are lounging on it.

Meanwhile, Kai's peeled off his shirt and dragged me into the pool before I could even protest.

"Kai!" I shriek, water hitting my stomach with a cold splash, but he's already laughing, already pulling me closer.

I swat at him, but he catches my wrist, pulls me into a spin in the water, and then dips me.

We wade further into the pool, and the water suddenly gets deeper. I cling to Kai as he continues to swim.

"Oh god, Kai, I can't reach," I sputter.

"Climb on, Pae," he says.

I climb onto his back, laughing into his hair.

Behind us, Keefe is valiantly trying to hoist Sophie onto the inflatable duck.

"Keefe, I'm not getting on that death trap!"

Kai turns me in his arms until my back is against his chest, his chin resting on my shoulder, both of us bobbing gently.

I sink deeper into the water until just my chin is above the surface with Kai's arms still looped around my waist.

"I'd drown for you," he says dramatically, sinking under the water with zero warning and dragging me with him.

I come up gasping, spluttering, and laughing, water dripping down my face. "You're the worst!"

He grins, dimples on full display.

I splash him, then swim off to Annabeth, who is currently balancing on top of Percy's shoulders, who is perched on a flamingo pool float.

Percy falls off the float, bringing Annabeth down with him.

There's a massive splash, and when they resurface, Percy's laughing like he just won the lottery. Annabeth pushes her wet hair out of her face and glares at him. "You're so lucky I like you."

"I know," he says, clearly unbothered. "Now kiss me."

She shoves his head underwater.

Lia hoots from the sidelines. "That's my girl!"

Kai

The sun's lower in the sky, painting the clouds orange and pink.

Half the group's still in the pool — Kenji's attempting synchronized swimming with Michael and failing spectacularly. Nazeera's laughing so hard she nearly tips off her float. I've never seen her laugh that much.

Paedyn swims up behind me and wraps her arms around my shoulders, chin resting on top of my head. I reach up and squeeze her hands, tipping my head back to look at her.

Eventually, Sloane yells "Pizza's here!", which causes the whole group to hoist themselves out of the pool and stampede towards the lawn with the tables.

I hold out my hand and say, "Come on, let's go grab a slice before Keefe and Kenji eat all of it."

Paedyn laughs and accepts my hand.

As we walk to the table, I sigh contentedly. This is everything I'd ever wanted.
