Part 1| Chapter 5: First Day
18:03, 15 August 2025The next morning, the five VKs had to go to Remedial Goodness 101 first thing. And, of course, they almost arrived late, darting into the classroom just before the bell rang.
To no one's surprise, they were the only ones there. Evie and Mal sat together, Evie touching up her makeup while Mal sketched Fairy Godmother's wand with a pencil. On the bench beside theirs, Jay and Carlos sat next to each other, staring at the board but their minds wandering everywhere else. Y/n took the seat behind Mal and Evie, and surprisingly, she was actually trying to pay attention.
"If someone hands you a crying baby, do you, A, curse it? B, lock it in a tower? C, give it a bottle? Or D, carve out its heart?" Fairy Godmother asked to the class. "Evie," she called.
"What was the second one?" Evie asked.
"Oh, okay." Fairy Godmother frowned slightly. "Anyone else? Mal?"
However, Mal was far too distracted by her drawing. Though she looked at the board and tried to make it seem like she was paying attention, Fairy Godmother clearly wasn't buying it.
"C!" y/n exclaimed before Fairy Godmother could come over to Mal's desk to see what she was doing. "Give it a bottle."
At y/n's response, the headmistress smiled. "Correct. Again."
"You are on fire, girl!" Carlos complimented.
Mal scoffed. "Just pick the one that doesn't sound like any fun," she stated.
"If it's so easy, why don't you do it?" y/n snapped. "But yeah, I guess that's pretty much it."
"Oh," Carlos said.
"That makes so much sense," Evie added.
Suddenly, a girl in a pale blue dress nervously scurried through the classroom to Fairy Godmother. Y/n perked up upon seeing her, the girl catching her interest. However, she wasn't the only one who seemed to be fascinated by the girl.
"Oh. Hello, dear one," Fairy Godmother greeted.
'Dear one?' y/n pondered in her head.
"Hi. You need to sign off on early dismissal for the coronation," the girl informed her.
"Everyone here remembers my daughter, Jane?" Godmother asked.
"Mom, no!" Jane squealed.
'Jane,' y/n repeated in her mind.
"It's okay. Jane, this is everyone," Fairy Godmother introduced her daughter.
"Hi. That's okay, don't mind me. As you were," Jane said before darting out of the classroom.
Y/n watched as she left, an idea suddenly forming in her mind. Jane seemed like an easy person to break through, and if she could manage that, they had a straight path to the wand. Plus, something about that girl gave her a good feeling.
"Ahem," Fairy Godmother cleared her throat. "Let's continue. You find a vial of poison. Do you, A, put it in the king's wine? B, paint it on an apple? Or C, turn it over to the proper authorities?"
Carlos and Jay raised their hands instantly, both boys knowing the answer after Mal's word of advice.
"Oh! Ooh... get off," they mumbled while fighting each other.
"Jay," Fairy Godmother called.
"C. You turn it over to the proper authorities," he answered confidently.
"I was gonna say that," Carlos huffed.
"But I said it first," he replied teasingly. "Come here!" Jay trapped Carlos in a headlock and ruffled his hair furiously.
"Ow!" Carlos complained.
"Come on, who said it first? Who said it first?" Jay mocked.
"Ow! Stop! Ah!"
"Boys." Fairy Godmother tapped her wand against her podium. "Boys! I am gonna encourage you to use that energy on the tourney field."
"Oh, no. That's okay. Whatever that is, we'll... We'll pass," Carlos said, while a wide grin formed on Jay's face.
Y/n smiled to herself. "This is gonna be interesting."

Y/n sat on the bleachers with Mal and Evie as they watched the practice session while the cheerleaders cheered for the players.
"The prince doesn't look half bad in that uniform," y/n said with a slight grin as she stared at Ben.
"Ugh." Mal rolled her eyes. "The only person I find more obnoxious than him is his girlfriend."
Even y/n rolled her eyes at the mention of Sleeping Beauty's daughter. "Evie, what do you think?"
"Oh, sorry, but I already have a prince of my own," she said while blushing. "Well, things aren't really confirmed, but I already know they're going to be soon."
"Good for you," y/n said with a tight smile.
Suddenly, Mal laughed. "Look at Carlos."
The other two girls turned their heads to the white-haired boy who was already struggling, and the game hadn't even started.
"Hey. Hey! Hey, you. Lost boy! Put your helmet on. Get out of the kill zone! Come on. Pick it up. Put it on! Two hands," the coach instructed Carlos, who looked at him, confused, while putting on his helmet and walking out of the striped area of the field.
The practice ended as soon as it started. Jay stormed his way through the field, shoving and pushing everyone who got in his wayβincluding Carlos, most unfortunately for the poor boy.
Once Jay made the goal, he did a victory dance while everyone looked him with both confusion and astonishment. Coach Jenkins called him over, and y/n could only guess he was offered a spot on the team.
"Well, looks like we can go now," Mal said, already leaving.
"Yes. I want to catch Chad before he leaves," Evie said, following Mal.
Y/n trailed along behind them, until a certain someone called out to her.
"Y/n!" Ben said as he jogged up to her. "Y/n, y/n, hi. Umm..." he trailed off, as though he forgot what he was about to say. "Right, umm, I just wanted to ask how you guys are doing. You know, since it's your first day and all."
"Oh! Ummm..." Y/n really had to stop thinking about how much more attractive he looked in his jersey. "We're... we're fine. Yup. We're practically like the rest of you Auradon folks." She laughed loudly, then cringed internally.
He smiled. "Well, good to know. And if there's anything you need, please feel free to reach out," he told her.
"Will do," she assured him.
"Bennyboo!" A voice behind him called.
"OhβI'm so sorry, but I have to-"
"Go?" she finished for him. "Yeah, sure. You wouldn't wanna keep your girlfriend waiting, right?"
Ben smiled at her. "I'll catch you later, yeah?"
"Yeah," y/n said softly before Ben ran up to his girlfriend, leaving y/n alone.
For a few moments, she stood there, thinking about her exchange with Ben with a rather giddy smile. But when she saw him and Audrey talking, her arm linked with his, she snapped back to her reality.
'I better not be falling in love with that prince,' she thought in her mind.
She couldn't. She couldn't, she couldn't, she couldn't. How could she? To start off, they were from completely different worlds, and her mother wanted to destroy everything his parents loved. Not to mention, he was taken and completely out of her league.
And wasn't her heart meant to be alone forever, anyways?
