the drizzled coffee shop windows - bangchan

The rain patters slowly on the windows of the coffee shop, the quiet chatter amongst me turns into laughter as I gaze outside. Cracked auburn leaves and slightly muddy footprints are left on the floor of the shop, as I wait. Wait patiently for my love.

Warm, rich scents of roasted coffee and lattes make me deeply breathe it all in, sighing in contentment. Waiters take their time, crafting their drinks by the counter and smile their brightest when handing them over to their customers. I know this place too well, this is my favourite spot to work after all. Headphones, an iced coffee and new lyrics to work on in the late evening is my usual go-to. As I turn back around, some servers I recognise catch my eye as they chuckle and give me a small wave. I nod and smile back softly, checking the door as I do so, but he's still not here.

"Your usual, Chris?" Max, my favourite here, asks me from behind, startling me but I laugh seeing him.

"Of course, a bitter iced latte - thank you."

"Workin' on a romantic song.. I suppose? The more bitter, the more lovey-dovey the song will be; am I not right?"

"You're always right Max, I've been comin' here for 4 years - what else can my best friend here tell me?" I smile, looking up at him admiring his freckles, which I always do.

"Nothing from me, I have a few customers to serve today, I'll catch you later, 'kay?"

"Okay!" I shout as he walks back, leading him to turn around and wave me goodbye.

Finally, a shivering gust of wind from the coffee shop doors tells me someone's here.

My boyfriend.

Except he looks, different. Almost too different. But he's trying to hide it from me.

His usually bright cheeky eyes were subtly red and his eyebags looked slightly darkened. His usually soft combed hair - which he always kept well as he never let me touch his hair products - looked extremely dishevelled and his skin looked very unlike his clear skin - no. Signs of drool over the side of his mouth and dried tears covered with some sort of makeup were visible in the lights.

He wore a plain black hoodie and black jeans, but he always wore cool outfits, he didn't shine either.

My heart dropped to my stomach looking at him this way, he didn't even grin at me when he saw me, just kept a straight face and shuffled his way into the seat opposite me. This was distinct to what he'd usually do, we'd always sit next to each other: no matter where we are. What we promised to each other for the last 3 years of our relationship, we'd always stick together.

Now, my heart was slowly getting torn apart, my mind darkly distorted with theories before I could mutter any words. He looked around despite me being in front of him; I'd never felt so distant to the man I've loved for so long. He turned to the side, trying to catch the attention of a server as I saw the tears lining up on his waterline - glazing his eyes - before he squeezed them shut and sniffled his incoming 'sneeze'.

"Sorry, not feeling too good right now ba- Christopher." He pinched the tip of his nose as stared at the floor, at his shoes, before calling to a server yet again.

"Hey, we talked about this, remember? I like Chris, it rolls off your tongue better anyways." I smirk and laugh quietly, trying to lighten the mood and myself - from crying. But he doesn't get the message, and still has his eyes averted from mine.

His eyes are what made me begin to love him, the pretty dark-brown shade, the way it sparkled with compassion ever so slightly when he saw me, when he laughed, they closed and the mole under his left eye was so beautiful. It was all gone, like we were strangers, not knowing anything about each other.

"Look, I need to tell you something." Hyunjin spoke, making me look right at him, hoping for even a spark in those eyes of his. But nothing. So empty.

"What? Baby, something happened at work?" I answered back as gently as I possibly could, trying to comfort him. I reached for his fisted hands on the table, covering them before he took them away and put them in his pockets.

"We need to break up. I'm exhausted."

I shattered. Right there. My source of personal happiness and someone I could love, trust and lean on, now just a stranger I might walk by. I thought I knew him, all this time. I knew his personality, when to give him the alone time he needed, when he wanted to laugh or cry, what did I do so wrong? Exhaustion never came to my mind when I thought of him, only the talented and handsome person he was.

Was he exhausted of me working? No, I took hours off my job for him.

I knew how to give him the pleasure he wanted, I traced my fingers over his body and gave him all of me. He snuggled in my neck and I waited until his body completely lay still for me to then fall asleep peacefully. I did everything I could.

Just as I was about to grab his wrist and ask, he covered his face wiping the tears to reveal his concealer smeared face and lifting the hood of his black hoodie before leaving the shop.

I tried my best to suppress my emotions as I normally did, but I could release them when I was with him. Why did he have to leave, my everything.

I stay sat still, fighting the urge to run. Run as possibly fast as I could to him, but I knew he would never come back. Tears glossed over my eyes, my vision went blurry and I let some tears escape before I walked to the door.

"Chris! Wait! Your Iced Latte!" I ignored him, too lost in myself, the drink the least of my concerns. I heard him pant as he came closer to me, but I knew even stepping a foot back here, would make me relive this all again.

"Sorry, I need to leave." I didn't turn around, looking at the door handle and pushing it open and walking out before he could speak.

I walked, for ages, crying silently in the crowds, no one caring about anyone. But, I only wished for one person to care. Him.

As I walked, unanswered questions and more tears left me. Breaking me at every moment possible, knowing I could never hug his warm body, kiss those strawberry-tasting lips and laugh to his humour. But that was now missing.

The love of my life left me, in my favourite coffee shop.
