Part 119
18:55, 28 May 2026Noel let out a sharp, ragged laugh against her collarbone, his fingers digging into her hips as her teasing comment hit its mark. 'Fierce, practical, and completely impatient,' he murmured, his voice rumbling low against her skin. 'Right. Recovery strategy. I'm thinking about it.'
He closed his eyes, taking a long, deliberate breath to force his heart rate down. But it was nearly impossible. Caro was still sitting on the edge of the counter, her legs wrapped loosely around his waist, and every tiny shift of her body was a direct threat to his self-control. The lingering warmth of her skin under his hands was intoxicating, a chaotic mix of her underlying fever and the sheer electricity they had just sparked between them.
Then, reality subtly nudged at her. Caro glanced toward the kitchen door, the layout of Liam's house suddenly reframing the absolute madness of what they were doing. They were in his brother's kitchen. At any second, Debbie, Liam, or the kids could come barreling back through that door.
A wicked, clever glint flared in Caro's eyes. She leaned in closer, sliding her hands up his chest until her arms looped securely around his neck, her chest pressing heavily against his.
'But,' she whispered, her voice dropping into a low, raspy purr right against his ear, her warm breath making his entire body go rigid. 'We are in your brother's house, Noel. And as much as I want you right now...I am not giving Liam the satisfaction of walking in on us a second time.'
She nipped playfully at his earlobe, her lips brushing the sensitive skin just below it before she leaned back just enough to look at him. She deliberately shifted her hips against him, a slow, heavy friction that made Noel's breath catch violently in his throat.
'So, you're going to have to promise me to save the rest of that recovery strategy,' she murmured, her gaze dropping deliberately to his lips before rising back to his eyes. 'For when we are entirely alone tonight. In your bed. I want you to show me exactly what you had planned for this counter, and I don't want you holding back. Deal?'
Noel's jaw tightened, a low growl tearing from his throat at the sheer torture of her ultimatum. He stared at her, utterly defeated by her logic and completely maddened by the raw promise of later.
'You are absolute evil, you know that?' he muttered, his hands gripping her thighs a fraction tighter as he leaned forward, pressing one hard, desperate kiss to her lips, a down payment for later, before slowly letting his hands slide out from under her shirt. 'Fine. Deal. But the second we get home, Caro, you're holding up your end of the bargain. I won't be letting you out of that bed.'
Noel's hands clenched into the fabric of Caro's shirt, his knuckles turning white as he fought a losing battle against his own body. Every instinct screamed at him to pull her back against the counter, to slide his hands right back under her clothes and forget the rest of the world existed.
Caro wasn't moving either. Her arms remained locked securely around his neck, her chest rising and falling in heavy, ragged breaths against his. The playful, teasing light in her eyes had completely melted away, replaced by a dark, mutual ache that made parting feel physically painful. It was a suffocating tug-of-war between the burning need to stay right there and the freezing reality of where they were.
'Noel,' Caro whispered, her voice strained, almost a plea. Her fingers dug into the nape of his neck, holding on for one last, desperate second even as she knew they couldn't. 'We have to..'
'I know,' Noel groaned, the sound raw and scraping against her throat as he buried his face deeper into the crook of her neck. He inhaled sharply, imprinting the scent of her skin into his mind. 'I know, Caro. Just... one second.'
His fingers tightened on her hips, flatly refusing to obey his brain. He knew the risk, getting caught mid-hookup on the kitchen counter by a flock of kids was a nightmare neither of them wanted to explain.
With a low, defeated curse, Noel finally forced his hands to uncurl from her waist.
The physical separation felt like a violent tearing. As he dragged himself backward, the cool air of the kitchen rushed into the empty space between them, leaving a hollow ache in its wake. He stumbled back a step, rubbing a hand roughly down his face, his jaw clenched so tight the muscles jumped.
Caro didn't move immediately. She sat on the edge of the counter for a fraction of a second, looking completely dazed, her chest heaving as she fought to claw her way back to composure. When she finally slid off the linoleum, her feet hit the floor with a soft thud. Her knees buckled slightly, a subtle wobble that she quickly tried to hide by smoothing down her clothes. Her hands were shaking so violently she could barely adjust her collar, a dead giveaway of how devastatingly hard it was for her to step away from him combined with her fever.
Then, the sharp, aggressive buzz of Caro's cell phone shattered the quiet.
The sudden noise made them both flinch. Caro cleared her throat, her hand darting into her pocket to pull out the device. The moment she read the caller ID, the lingering haze of desire in her eyes vanished, instantly replaced by her hyper-focused professional focus.
'It's Cornwell,' Caro said, her voice still a little breathless but quickly regaining its sharp, efficient clip. She held up a finger, signaling Noel to stay quiet as she swiped the screen and pressed it to her ear. 'Julian, hi..'
Noel froze, his entire body turning to stone as he watched her. The transition was brutal. A second ago she was wrapped around his waist, promising him the world in his bed tonight, and now she was the fiercely protective gatekeeper of his life, handling a high-end solicitor.
'Really?' Caro's voice suddenly cut through the kitchen air, but this time, the tension completely broke. 'Is that confirmed?' Caro asked quietly. Her tone was completely deadpan, stripped of all emotion. She didn't gasp, she didn't smile, and she didn't give Noel a single clue.
Noel's jaw tightened, his hands clenching into fists at his sides. He tried to read her posture, but her shoulders were perfectly squared, her professional mask firmly in place. The secrecy was torturous. He couldn't tell if his life was falling apart or if they had won a minor procedural battle. His chest tightened with a suffocating anxiety.
'Understood,' Caro said softly, her voice crisp and entirely businesslike. 'Send the paperwork straight to my inbox. I'll have a look. Thank you, Julian.'
She ended the call and slowly lowered the phone. The second the screen went black, her professional composure stayed intact. A long sigh escaped her lips, and she turned to face Noel, her face practically unreadable.
Noel stepped toward her, the forced distance they had just fought so hard to maintain completely evaporating. His expression was a mix of desperate hope and agonizing suspense. 'Caro? What did he say?'
'She admitted defeat, Noel,' Caro breathed, stepping right back into his space, her face practically glowing. 'Her lawyers realized our documentation was bulletproof. She signed the agreement. It's over. Bowie is returning to you tomorrow.'
The words hit Noel like a physical blow, knocking the wind right out of him. The heavy, dark shadow of anxiety that he had carried for days instantly vanished. Tomorrow. His little girl was coming home for good.
A raw, breathless laugh tore from his throat. Forgetting the kitchen door, forgetting the rules, and completely abandoning their agonizing effort to stay apart, he grabbed Caro by the waist and lifted her right off her feet again, pulling her tight against his chest in a fierce, overwhelming hug of pure, unadulterated joy.
Noel squeezed her tightly, burying his face in her long honey hair as the staggering weight of the news truly settled in. His shoulders shook slightly, not from grief, but from the violent, sudden evaporation of the terror that had choked him for days.
Caro let out a soft, breathless sound as he held her off the ground, her arms automatically looping back around his neck. Even with the lingering warmth of her fever, she squeezed him back with everything she had, sharing in the sheer triumph of a battle fought and won in the shadows.
'God, Caro,' Noel muttered, his voice thick, rough, and scraping against her ear as he slowly let her feet slide back to the floor. He didn't let go of her waist, his hands anchoring her close as if he still couldn't entirely trust the ground beneath him. 'Tomorrow. You actually did it.'
'We did it,' Caro corrected gently, a brilliant, uncharacteristic warmth bleeding through her usual professional armor. She leaned her forehead against his chest for just a second, letting herself feel the rapid, ecstatic thud of his heart before she looked up at him. 'They knew they'd get slaughtered if they stepped into a courtroom with us.'
Noel stared down at her, his dark eyes fiercely intense, filled with a profound, quiet reverence that had absolutely nothing to do with the physical heat they had generated minutes ago. She was his lover, and the fierce guardian who had just handed him back his entire world.
He cupped her face in his hands, his thumbs tracing her cheekbones. 'I don't even know how to thank you.'
'You don't have to,' she murmured, a trace of that familiar, wicked glint teasing the corners of her lips despite her exhaustion. 'But if you're looking for a starting point...you can remember that promise you made me about tonight.'
Before Noel could answer, before he could press the deeply emotional, worshipful kiss to her lips that was currently demanding to be released, the heavy click of the door echoed through the kitchen.
But Noel didn't let go. If anything, the sound of his family's return only made his grip tighten. The sheer, overwhelming relief crashing through his veins stripped away his remaining restraint. Instead of stepping back, he leaned down and captured Caro's lips in a deep, fiercely possessive kiss, a breathless, silent vow of everything he couldn't put into words.
Caro gasped against his mouth, her fingers tangling into the hair at the nape of his neck as she melted into him, completely abandoning the rules they had fought so hard to keep.
Liam and the kids walked in on them again but this time he stayed to stare at them. A slow, deeply amused smirk curled the corner of his mouth as he crossed his arms, leaning heavily against the doorframe. He took a long, deliberate look at Noel's hands still locked around Caro's waist, and then at Caro's flushed, feverish cheeks.
'You know, Noel,' Liam remarked, his tone dripping with lazy, snappy sarcasm, 'when I bought this house, I specifically checked the blueprints. Nowhere on the deed did it say the kitchen counter doubles as your personal VIP lounge. If you two keep this up, I'm going to start charging you rent by the hour.'
Caro pulled back from the kiss, her breath catching as she blushed. A genuine, bright laugh escaped her lips, the brilliant glow from the phone call still radiating from her eyes despite the sudden audience.
Noel, however, didn't look annoyed by the interruption for once. He slowly let his hands drop to Caro's waist, keeping her anchored firmly against his side. He turned his head to look at his brother, the usual hard, brooding lines of his face completely softened by a rare, striking expression of pure, unadulterated peace.
'Shut up, Liam,' Noel said, his voice rough and thick with emotion, but a breathless, triumphant smile broke across his face.
Liam's smirk flickered, his sharp eyes instantly catching the change in his brother's demeanor. He straightened up, the mockery vanishing from his expression in a heartbeat. 'Noel? What's going on?'
Noel looked down at Caro for a split second, his chest expanding with a massive, liberated breath, before looking back at his brother and the kids.
'Cornwell just called,' Noel told them, his voice vibrating with a raw intensity that made the entire room go dead silent. ' Mel backed down completely. She signed the agreement. It's over, Liam. Bowie is coming home tomorrow. For good.'
Liam froze, his sarcastic smirk vanishing. He stood rooted to the spot, his arms dropping to his sides as he stared at his brother.
'Are you serious?' Liam asked, his voice suddenly thick. 'Tomorrow? She actually signed it?'
'She did' Noel said, his voice rough and tight with emotion.
With a low laugh, Liam stepped forward and pulled his brother into a quick, heavy hug, pounding a fist against Noel's back. 'God, man. I'm so happy for you. It's finally over.'
Liam pulled back from the hug, turning to his family with a massive smile. 'Did you hear that? Bowie is coming home tomorrow,' he repeated, his voice ringing clearly through the room.
The room instantly came alive. Debbie let out a sharp gasp, her hands flying to her mouth, and rushed forward to give Noel a fierce hug. The kids went absolutely wild, jumping up and down and shouting Bowie's name.
Debbie pulled away from Noel, wiping her eyes, and immediately turned to wrap Caro in a warm squeeze. 'Oh, thank God. Caro, you absolute angel, thank you so much.'
Caro smiled, hugging Debbie back and trying to match the family's happy energy. But as the adrenaline from the phone call and the sudden shouting began to fade, the fever she had been fighting all afternoon finally caught up with her.
A sharp wave of dizziness hit her, and her knees buckled slightly as she swayed backward.
Debbie stepped back, her smile fading into concern as she looked at Caro's flushed face. 'Oh, sweetheart, are you ok?.'
'I'm fine,' Caro mumbled, resting her head weakly against Noel's shoulder and letting her eyes close. 'Just a bit dizzy.'
Debbie didn't let her go, keeping her arms wrapped securely around Caro's shoulders. Feeling the intense heat radiating through Caro's clothes, Debbie looked up at Noel and gave him a subtle, reassuring wink. It was a silent, knowing acknowledgment that the long custody battle was finally won, and that he and Caro desperately deserved some quiet, uninterrupted time alone together.
'Noel, take your girl home right now. Liam and I will look after the kids tonight, so don't you worry about a single thing here.'
Liam caught his wife's look and nodded quickly in agreement, grabbing Noel's jacket and Caro's purse from the kitchen chair. 'Yeah, get out of here, man. Go take care of her. We've got everything covered for tomorrow.'
