Part 118
19:24, 27 May 2026Noel and Liam stared at her, their expressions blank with utter bewilderment. The chaotic, clattering noise of the kitchen died instantly, swallowed by a tense, suffocating silence.
'Handled?' Noel repeated. The word tasted wrong in his mouth. He shook his head, his brow furrowing into deep, painful lines as his eyes raked over her trembling, fragile frame. 'Handled what, darling? You were in there for less than five minutes. You can barely keep your eyes open.'
Liam stepped forward, crossing his heavy arms over his chest. His sharp, cynical glare fixed onto her, dissecting every micro-expression. 'Yeah, what are you on about, love? Mel's probably got a battery of high-priced sharks and a folder full of legal landmines. You can't just wave a magic wand and make a woman like that disappear.'
Caro didn't flinch under the weight of their scrutiny. The fever burning through her veins seemed to anchor her, stripping away any room for hesitation. 'I didn't use a magic wand. I called Julian Cornwell,' she said bluntly, her gaze locking onto Noel's like a vice.
Noel's jaw went completely slack. The air left his lungs in a sudden, sharp rush. 'Cornwell? The family law solicitor? Caro, that man sits at the absolute peak of the High Court. He doesn't just pick up the phone for a casual chat, especially not on a weekend.'
'He does when he owes a debt that would ruin him if unpaid,' Caro replied. A faint, razor-thin smirk cut through her feverish exhaustion.
Liam narrowed his eyes, his cynical interest instantly piqued. 'What kind of dirt gets a high-court executioner to jump on command?'
'A few years ago, Cornwell's teenage son got caught up in a highly sensitive, potentially career-ending incident backstage at one of Noel's shows,' Caro explained. Her breathing was shallow, a ragged rattle in her chest, but her words remained entirely precise, clipped and deliberate. 'The tabloids were already circling, ready to tear the boy's life apart and incinerate Cornwell's professional reputation. I caught wind of it first. I quietly intervened, buried the source, protected the kid's identity, and left the press completely blind.'
She took a slow, agonizing breath, keeping her eyes anchored to Noel. 'Cornwell told me back then that if I ever needed a clean kill, no questions asked, I just had to call. So I called.'
A heavy pulse of silence throbbed through the room.
'I gave him the unvarnished truth about Mel,' Caro continued, her voice dropping an octave, holding a lethal, quiet edge. 'The night she dumped Bowie on your doorstep in the dead of night. No warning. No legal transition. I told him we hold the time-stamped CCTV footage, the automated gate logs, and the initial police notification you filed.'
A sharp, horrified intake of breath came from Debbie near the counter. Liam let out a low, slow whistle of pure appreciation.
'Cornwell's assessment was immediate: it is a textbook case of child endangerment and severe parental instability,' Caro said, her body swaying slightly, though her eyes never wavered. 'He's serving her legal team an emergency custody application within the hour. The ultimatum is absolute: if she leaks a single syllable to the press or tries to withhold Bowie, we release the abandonment evidence to the High Court and the tabloids ourselves. We will ruin her reputation as an unfit mother before she can even draw a breath to lie.'
The kitchen fell completely, devastatingly quiet.
While Liam's face slowly broke into a dark, predatory grin, Noel didn't look triumphant. He looked entirely fractured. His chest heaved with a violent mixture of raw terror, profound gratitude, and a sudden, terrifying confusion that shattered his expression.
Before the boys could voice another panicked question, Liam caught the volatile, dangerously heavy shift in his brother's energy. Sharing a swift, knowing look with Debbie, Liam immediately stepped into the breach.
'Alright, lads, out you go. Move it. Let's give your dad and Caro some air,' Liam murmured. His rough, gravelly voice was surprisingly gentle as he and Debbie quickly, seamlessly ushered the anxious children out of the kitchen. The heavy oak door swung shut behind them, cutting off the rest of the house.
The moment the latch clicked and they were utterly alone, Noel closed the distance between them in two large, desperate strides. He didn't just touch her; he pushed himself against her, his hands framing her face as his thumbs slid over her fever-flushed, burning skin. His eyes searched hers with a frantic, agonizing intensity.
'Caro...why the hell didn't you use this before?' Noel's voice shook, fractured by a sudden, bleeding raw emotion. 'Why didn't you use this for yourself?'
Caro blinked up at him, momentarily disoriented by the sheer grief in his eyes. 'What?'
'When Rob came after you,' Noel whispered, the words tearing from his throat in a ragged, bewildered confession. 'He put you through absolute, unmitigated hell. He nearly killed you, Caro. He hunted you down and tore your life apart while you sat there holding a card like Julian Cornwell in your back pocket. Why didn't you call in the favor to save your own life?'
His grip tightened slightly, his chest heaving as the horrific weight of the realization fully crashed over him. 'Why did you hoard a weapon of this magnitude until now, just to use it on my daughter?'
Caro looked straight into the storm of his eyes. She didn't look tragic; she didn't look like a martyr. She looked entirely, devastatingly practical.
'Because I know exactly what it's like to grow up trapped in that kind of toxic, suffocating nightmare,' Caro said. Her voice was flat, steady, and devoid of self-pity. 'I lived it every single day of my childhood and youth, Noel. I couldn't sit back and watch Bowie get dragged into the same meat grinder by her mother.'
She reached out, her warm, trembling fingers locking tightly around his wrist, 'I told you before. Blood comes first. Even if it's not my own blood, it's yours,' she stated, her brutal logic cutting through his shock.
'Bowie needed an armor-plated shield today. It was already too late for me anyway. I'm an adult. Technically I'm supposed to be able to handle monsters like Rob. A six-year-old girl can't. You and Bowie needed that card. I didn't.'
Noel just stared at her, completely devastated by the fierce, terrifying purity of her loyalty.
The flat, practical look in Caro's eyes was what finally cracked Noel's composure. If she had been crying or playing the martyr, he could have handled it. He would have known how to comfort her. But this calm, matter-of-fact dismissal of her own life completely floored him.
He looked at her with a raw, breathless awe. It wasn't just gratitude; it was a profound reverence for the sheer magnitude of what she had done.
'Don't say that,' Noel muttered, his voice dropping into a rough whisper. His hands slid down from her face to grip her waist, his fingers digging in just enough to hold her steady. He dropped his forehead against hers. 'Don't you dare say it was already too late for you.'
'You went through hell,' he whispered, the words heavy with a guilt that felt entirely suffocating. 'I watched you look over your shoulder every single day, waiting for the next blow to land. You had the power to stop him, in reach and yet you didn't..'
Caro shook her head slowly, a weary, faint smile brushing her lips. She didn't argue, but her eyes held the heavy weight of a truth they both lived with.
'I think we both know better than that, Noel,' she murmured softly.
Caro didn't give him the chance. Tired of the heavy conversation and the crushing guilt in his eyes, she stepped closer and pulled him down by his collar, pressing her lips to his to shut him up completely.
'I don't want to talk about this anymore, Noel,.' she murmured against his mouth, her voice barely a whisper but entirely final.
She forced her chin up, looking him dead in the eye with a sudden, fierce intensity that cut right through her physical exhaustion. A tiny, weary smile tugged at her lips. 'I love you, Noel. Always have, and always will. There is absolutely nothing I wouldn't do for you, or your kids.'
Noel just stared at her, utterly floored. He bit his lower lip, his chest heaving as a million protests and a lifetime of gratitude fought to get out. But before a single syllable could leave his mouth, Caro closed the remaining distance again. She grabbed the collar of his shirt, anchoring herself, and pulled him down into another kiss.
This one wasn't just a brief grounding touch, it was deep, fierce, and entirely passionate, a desperate claim that defied the fever ravaging her body. Noel let out a low, rough sound against her mouth. He didn't just kiss her; he took possession of her mouth with a fierce, unchecked desperation.
He gently pushed her back against the kitchen counter, the intensity of the moment overshadowing everything else. The tension that had been building for months finally broke, replaced by an overwhelming sense of relief and connection. Caro reached out, her fingers catching in his hair pulling him closer to her while the rest of the world kept falling away.
The air in the room felt electric, Noel's hands started to wander around her body, only to end up under her shirt, his warm hands on her overheated skin made her shiver nonetheless.
The only sound in the room was their heavy breathing and soft groans as the passion flared up and teeth bit into a piece of skin, fingers started trailing south. Before she could even catch her breath, Noel gripped her waist.
With a sudden, powerful surge of passion, he lifted her clean off her feet, and pushed her up onto the edge of the kitchen counter. Caro gasped against his mouth, her legs instinctively parting to accommodate him.
Their bubble of passion was suddenly interrupted by the heavy iron click of the kitchen door opening.
'Oi! Dad, Uncle Liam said we could..'
The boy's voice cut off instantly into a startled silence.
Noel and Caro broke apart with a sharp, breathless rush, reality crashing back into the room like a physical blow. But Noel didn't..couldn't..just step aside. Given the intense rush of desire that had just consumed him, he was left in a very obvious, undeniable state.
Moving away was out of the question, so he stayed right where he was, his body pinned firmly between her thighs to keep himself hidden from view. He thanked his lucky stars they were both still dressed.
Instead of turning around, he merely snapped his head over his shoulder. His frame completely blocked the boys' line of sight, effectively burying Caro against the counter beneath him. He gripped the edge of the granite on either side of her hips, his knuckles turning white as he tried to force his ragged, heavy breathing to slow down. His eyes were dark with a volatile mix of interrupted desire and a sudden, hilarious spike of sheer panic.
To make matters worse, Caro felt the exact nature of his problem twitch between her legs, and a tiny, wicked smile brushed her lips as she lightly flexed her legs against his hips, intentionally testing his fading self-control. Noel's jaw clenched so hard a muscle ticked in his cheek.
Standing in the doorway, the boys froze. They looked entirely bewildered, staring at their father who appeared to be practically glued to the kitchen counter.
Behind them, Liam walked up behind them in the doorway. He took in the flushed, chaotic atmosphere, his gaze dropping straight to Noel's rigid, unmoving posture, and a slow, predatory grin spread across his face. He leaned casually against the doorframe, thoroughly enjoying the magnificent awkwardness of his brother's intense distraction.
'Told you they were "talking," lads,' Liam said, his rough voice dripping with pure, mocking sarcasm. He reached out and clapped a large hand over the boy's eyes, seamlessly spinning them around. He began ushering the stunned kids backward into the corridor. 'Come on, back up the stairs. Your dad's clearly deep in the middle of a very tight, highly sensitive legal negotiation. Give him a minute to wrap it up.'
The heavy oak door swung shut, the iron latch clicking back into place with agonizing finality.
For three seconds, the kitchen was dead silent, filled only with the sound of Noel's shallow, frustrated breathing. Then, Caro let out a breathless, weak chuckle against his neck.
The sheer absurdity of it, the top solicitor in London, the emergency custody, her fever, and now being trapped by his own anatomy because his kids walked in, finally broke through the tension.
Her shoulders started shaking as she giggled, the vibration of her laughter sending a fresh shiver straight down his spine.
Noel didn't laugh right away. He slowly leaned forward, dropping his forehead heavily against her collarbone with a pained, muffled groan.
'If you laugh at me right now,' he muttered, his voice dropping into a low, rough growl against her skin, 'I swear to God, Caro. I am literally a prisoner here until my brain remembers how to function.'
That only made her laugh harder, a genuine, wheezing sound that she tried to smother against his shoulder. Hearing her, a sudden, helpless twitch pulled at the corner of Noel's own mouth.
The ridiculousness of the situation finally caught up to him. A low, breathless chuckle rumbled in his chest, merging with hers. He shook his head against her neck, his broad shoulders finally relaxing as he started laughing at himself.
'Brilliant,' Noel muttered, his voice laced with dry, self-deprecating amusement as he looked up at her, his eyes warm and bright. 'Absolutely brilliant. I'm a grown man, and I've just been grounded by my own children. Liam is never going to let me live this down. He'll have it in one of his stupid songs by Tuesday.'
Caro's fingers tangled into the short hairs at the back of his neck, her thumb tracing his pulse point as she smiled down at him, her eyes bright with a mixture of amusement and lingering heat.
'Take your time,' she whispered, her voice still raspy from the kiss. 'I'm not going anywhere. Though you might want to think about your recovery strategy because I'm not a very patient woman.'
