Chapter 58
13:22, 2 December 2023My body won't move like it was trapped in a box. I couldn't see a way out. All my senses felt so dull and numb that I could see nothing but shadows creeping and enveloping me in their cold and dark embrace. I could feel myself slipping into a bottomless pit of nothingness.
Why do I feel so afraid, confused, and even hurt?
How long has it been since I felt so many emotions at once?
At first, there was only the sound of silence. But then, in the distance, my ears twitched at the faint sound of chains, almost imperceptible in this cold box. There was something about those chains, their rhythmic and steady rhythm, that was almost calming to my soul.
The sound of those heavy metals grew louder and louder until it became the only sound in the darkness. There was nothing else to hear, nothing else to focus on, just the sound of chains winding and winding as if searching for a way out just like me.
Just then, everything clicked in.
"Ah...I've been trapped...haven't I?"
..........
Asuna's POV
"You need to practice your stealth skills, it's like watching drunken hippos trying to sneak."
I mumbled as I tried to maintain a sense of control. Maybe, my attitude was my way of hiding the fear I felt. And I'm not dumb enough to give it away.
Their faces showed nothing but hatred and disdain. I clenched my fists as I stepped forward and my eyebrows raised as they all tensed, their hands moving to the handles of their weapons.
"You bitch. You sure made yourself too damn infamous," I grumbled.
Anyway, what do I do?
Shit. I don't even know what the hell I'm doing. How do I use chatora again?
I narrowed my eyes. Why the hell are they not making a move yet? Are they afraid or being too cautious, perhaps?
It was almost comical, the way they were acting like prey in the presence of a predator.
I stood in the center of the circle of ninjas, trying my best to feign confidence and determination as I acted like I knew what I was doing. But, in reality, I was just as scared and confused as they were. I honestly have no idea what I'm doing and I could only hope that it isn't that obvious.
This feels so awkward and I think I'm getting out of place, like I'm being forced into a role I never asked for.
"Just fucking come back already."
The stress of the situation was getting into me and I wanted nothing but, to run away. I don't know if I can run as fast as Lhexi can but, my desperation to escape caused my legs to move.
I smiled while I inhaled a breath of fresh air instead of feeling my lungs burning. Lhexi really toned my body up.
"After her!"
Someone yelled behind me.
I didn't have any specific plan in mind, I just wanted to get far, far away from them.
I heard a kunai whizzing past me, inches away from my cheeks. My eyes widened as my own hand caught that kunai with ease.
I didn't know how or why, but my body was moving by itself. It was as if I had lost control and my body had a mind of its own. My enemies attacked me, their weapons in their hands. But, my body reacted in a way that I couldn't understand, parrying their attacks easily. Yet, my mind was still in a haze and I didn't know what was happening.
I dodged their strikes with ease before countering with a kick.
It was as if I was watching it all in a dream. My body was acting without input, and it was both terrifying and awe-inspiring.
But nothing comes without a price especially how much of a bitch this world can be.
My eyes caught wind of an incoming blade but, my body was too late to react.
"Argh...!"
The skin on my jaw tore open as blood gushed out, spraying like waterfalls. My body backed away instinctively from the Jonin in front of me, holding two trench knives.
I pressed my palm over the wound to stop the bleeding as I snapped a shot at Asuma.
Thankfully, it wasn't as deep as I thought it was but, man it hurts really bad.
"Seeing that you have finally shed your skin, I was hoping you haven't lost your edge yet," Asuma grunted as veins pulsed in his neck. "Because I will make sure to torture you until you beg for mercy."
Ah...is he mad perhaps because of what happened to Kurenai?
"Oh? Just like how Kurenai-sensei did?"
I grinned at the sight of his lips curling in anger, pain, and hostility.
"You little brat," he growled before his lips pressed firmly together.
Tilting my head to the side, I gave him a mocking grin. The sound of my laughter erupted in the forest as Konoha Nins stared in disgust at my outburst.
"The Gods are truly magnificently heinous aren't they?!"
I pulled my hand away from the gushing wound on my jaw as I laughed.
"Not only did you lose your father, and your unborn child--! You will also soon lose your beloved!"
Heat rose to my cheeks as I squished my face while I tried to keep myself from getting too excited.
"And to think that...I'm the one who took them away from you...," My eyes dilated as my voice trembled. "Ahh~ I can't be anymore happier than this..."
Contempt. Disgust. Confusion.
Those three words were the only descriptions I could give to describe their expressions.
"This crazy bitch..."
I heard someone whisper and my golden eyes snapped at them.
"Perhaps," I smiled coyly with my half-lidded eyes.
The sense of fear and uncertainty disappeared from my nerves.
This world consists of predators and prey. And I was tired of consistently being the latter.
Running away is no longer my goal here.
Hunt.
Yes. That's the word.
The ninjas before me disappeared in a flash before they all surrounded me with their weapons embedded through my skin, flesh, and bones. I could feel the excruciating pain of cold metals piercing through my rib cage and I bit my lower lip as blood escaped my mouth.
Pressing my fingers together in slow motion, I looked up at Asuma with a broad grin with his trench knife planted in between my torso.
Boar. Dog. Bird. Monkey. Ram.
I can still clearly remember, Lhexi repeating these signs a thousand times as bright as the day just to summon a random lizard. Even someone like me with a brain the size of that of a peanut can remember something like that.
"Hold her still!"
"Why the hell is she still alive?!"
The sound of chaos ensued as black smoke erupted and my beloved child appeared from the darkness. Brown scars covered his sharp black scales and the ground shook from his ferocious roar.
"Ryuujin..."
I whispered softly as he launched my enemies away throughout the woods with a single flap of his monstrous scaly wings. Trees were uprooted and the ground splits from the sharp impact of the wind.
Using my arms as I closed my eyes, I tried to block myself away from the storm Ryuujin caused. Just then, I felt a sharp sensation brushing against my skin. I parted my eyes wide open to see Ryuujin enveloping me carefully with his tail.
I grinned lightly before a drop of blood fell on the ground and my knees buckled at the same time. Throwing up a lump of red liquid on the ground, I hurriedly wiped away the blood off my lips.
"Hm...?"
Noticing something forming on the soil as my blood seeped through the ground, my eyes widened. A small little life sprouted from the forest floor. I carefully touched the tiny green leaves of the small plant.
"If only...Lhexi was here...maybe...she might know what's going on with my body."
I mumbled to myself as I placed my hands over my head, pressing my fingers against my forehead. Testing, if Lhexi's soul is still within my body.
"You better be right there..."
Hissing, I bit my lower lip as I felt nothing but, emptiness, and out of that silence--I heard the faint sound of chains.
Just as I was trying to concentrate on finding Lhexi's soul, a set of explosions threw me off my focus.
"Seriously?"
Raising an eyebrow as Ryuujin released his protection around me, I took a peek to see what was going on.
Dead bodies hung on thick branches and I silently grimaced at the sight. It made my gut twist in a certain way.
Looking to the side, I saw Ryuujin stomping his claw against Asuma's back, his body buried in the soil and I smirked before I slowly walked towards the fallen ninja.
"What's up?" I asked with a mocking grin. The man looked up at my golden eyes and I didn't resist the urge not to enjoy this pitiful sight of his.
He was boiling with rage, pain, and agony as the color of blood circled under his eyes, dried with tears and guilt from the death of his comrades--his unborn child--and the near-death state of his beloved.
Ryuujin retracted his claw for a bit, as he released his hold on Asuma's head while keeping him buried on the ground.
"You're just a child playing with killing. The darkness I've seen and fought would swallow you whole," his voice trembled with menace as he glowered at me with hostility.
"I'm a child? Funny, coming from someone who plays killing like a game. If you think I couldn't swallow your so-called darkness whole, you're sorely mistaken," I preached with the faint sound of giggles, following my words. "Don't mistake my age for innocence. Do you think you know darkness? You've only seen what it looks like, I live in it every day."
I slowly but surely stood over my defeated enemy, I used his head as a footstool as I continued to glare at him with a look of pure contempt and mocking.
Ryuujin's razor-sharp claw dug into his back, holding him down with ease as he struggled to move. Every muscle in his body ached with pain and fatigue, and I could see him tasting the blood in his mouth as I buried his face in the dirt. "And I've killed more people than you could ever save."
Quick as a flash, he responded without losing his cool before speaking with a hint of disdain in his voice. "If killing is how you measure strength, then you're still a child with much to learn."
He kept his eyes firmly fixed on me as he spoke, not giving an inch of ground despite being the one that lies below.
"And if I'm a child...how come you're so easy to beat?" My heel dug deeper into the back of his head, the weight of my entire body pressing down. I took pleasure in seeing him struggle before me.
"I don't care how much darkness you've seen, because I've lived in it for every second of my life since I was a child when my entire clan was slaughtered before my eyes at your hands. I may be a child in your eyes, but I am the one who will decide your fate today."
No tears slipped away from my eyes. I didn't hear a sound of whimpers that was familiar to my ears. My fists balled up with rage as the memory of the slaughter of my clan flashed before my eyes.
"I will make you taste the pain you made me suffer! I will make sure you watch everyone you cherished burn to ashes! I will make your life a living hell that you will never know the meaning of peace and happiness ever again!"
I couldn't even recognize my voice anymore as I yelled in pain and thirst for revenge.
I looked up at Ryuujin and my child immediately understood what I wanted. As much as I wanted to kill the man below my heels, I wanted to make sure he suffered first.
I stepped back as Ryuujin's sharp claws dug into his back. My eyes didn't leave the scene of his limbs slowly tearing apart as Asuma let out a blood-curdling cry.
"Argh...! Haah...! AAAHHH!"
The lower half of his body was mangled as Ryuujin slowly detached his hips to the bottom of his spine. My lips briefly parted apart as my golden eyes watched with amusement.
The sound of Asuma's painful cries and blood-wrenching screams brought music to my ears.
As I stood on top of the dead body of another ninja, I looked around at the vast expanse of the forest. Slowly, I began to notice the animals crawling out of the underbrush and bushes to surround me. My eyes widened in surprise as I saw all the wild animals and vultures surrounding the ninjas' bodies, some of them slowly beginning to feed on the corpses. Their fangs and claws ripped the human flesh and remains.
I looked to the side to watch with fascination as my child tore Asuma's body apart, his lower limbs being pulled in different directions by Ryuujin's razor-sharp claws.
The sound of breaking bones and tearing flesh echoed through the woods, as I watched Asuma take his shallow, weak breaths. I stayed seated on the ground, my eyes following the movements of Ryuujin as he turned his attention towards me, slowly moving towards my position.
As he drew near, Ryuujin began to lower his head towards me, seemingly offering comfort. I looked up at Ryuujin in surprise for a moment before I reached my hand towards him. Ryuujin seemed to understand my intention, and he gently lowered his neck to allow me to stroke his scaly skin.
With a low rumble, he nudged my bleeding jaw with his nose and I smiled weakly.
"Your mother is okay... don't worry..."
The familiar sensation of my skin burning returned and I almost collapsed as a result. I looked down at the black marks spreading all over my body once again. I took a sharp breath when I felt something forcibly moving among the bones in my ribcage like it was returning their positions back to their original place.
I could see the black marks running over the deep gashes in my abdomen, my torn torso, and the bloody cuts on my arms and jaw. I could feel the pain as I moved slightly, the energy of nature pulsated through my veins and I noticed the wounds slowly starting to disappear.
As I leaned against Ryuujin's nose for comfort, I felt the warmth of the dragon's scale against my skin, a welcome change from the cold and damp forest. The cold pain of my wounds slowly subsided being replaced by a different kind of pain, and as the flesh slowly began to heal, the wounds on my body slowly vanished with each passing moment.
I let Ryuujin comfort me as the excruciating pain slightly subsided. My golden eyes traveled to the small cuts on my knuckles and I watched as small white patches covered the pink open flesh.
The more I dwelt in the energy of nature around me, the stronger it became, ultimately allowing me to slowly heal from my severe wounds similar to a lizard's natural ability.
"Let's get going," I murmured into Ryuujin's ears before I stood up and slowly climbed on top of his back. "We're not done yet..."
As Ryuujin spread his enormous wings, I stared down at Asuma, his body split into two. I could see his round intestines bathing in his own blood as they slowly slipped away from his belly.
His chest slowly contracted as he heaved a shallow breath, his eyes were almost dead like they had been swallowed by death itself.
'He's still alive huh? Well...he will die soon enough...'
I didn't even bother to make myself deal with the final blow and stared ahead. It would be better if he survives so he can watch the village he protected his whole life ruin.
As Ryuujin flapped his wings, I heard a faint low whisper from the ground.
"Oi kid...you should be aware..," It was a low whisper that I could barely understand it. "...clan...evil...leader...world..."
I simply narrowed my eyes before I tapped Ryuujin's scales not bothering to hear any more nonsense. My dragon lets out a low rumble with each flap of his wings, the sound comforting my ears.
As he soared through the sky, the wind blew roughly on my hair but, I found myself feeling freedom and lightness.
When was the last time, I was free as a bird?
I could still remember the feeling of being locked in a cage as soon as I made a pact with that mysterious black shadow. I was trapped in the shadows for years as I watched the life of a woman flash before my eyes.
She was free in her world, and although her life was uneventful, she was happy. That same woman was forced to live the past five years of my life. As I was trapped in that cold and terrifying cage, she faced my demons and at the same time, she found a way to survive for the next day. And I was too scared to ask her to give my life back to me. I was too scared to face my fear. So I hid inside my cage, watching everything unfold, watching my body break and tear, watching cold metals pierce through my flesh, watching scars form and fade. And watching the life this woman could have lived if she was born here without carrying my fate.
Third Person's POV
Sakura stood on the edge of the ear of the carved face of the Second Hokage. Her eyes tensed in worry as her emerald eyes watched over the village of Konoha as the bombs endlessly detonated. The air was a mixture of powder and dust, and she could breathe in the scent of iron from the spot she was standing on. She pursed her lips as she clenched her teeth before she ran back toward the deeper part of the tunnel to comfort the children crying with each quake of the ground caused by the bombings.
All the civilians were evacuated inside the Hokage mountain as they tried to ease up their worries. A few of the ninjas were also present to alert them of any danger or if the storm had passed.
"Konohamaru!" She yelled as she picked up her pace and knelt down to comfort the brown-haired kid panicking as well. He was a kid himself and yet he was trying to calm down his friends.
"O-oi! Udon! Moegi! It's gonna be okay! I-I'm sure that this will be over soon!" But, fear could be seen in his eyes, there was a sense of dread clouding his eyes. He slowly turned his attention towards the pink-haired genin as his small yet calloused hands shook. "Sakura-nee chan...what do we do...?"
Sakura smiled bitterly as she masked her worry with a gentle expression. "Our Jonins and Chuunins are deactivating the bombs as of the moment. It will take a little bit of time but, I'm sure...things will go back to normal..."
"Are you sure...?" Konohamaru whispered in a tense voice. He may be a kid but, his innocent eyes can tell the difference between uncertainty and optimism.
Sakura pursed her lips before she nodded. "I'm sure. Come here, kids..." She spread her arms out, ushering the crying children who were only a few years younger than her to be comforted. Konohamaru led the pack as he slowly but surely let himself be reassured by her warmth. Udon and Moegi followed and soon most of the kids surrounded her as they quietly sobbed from anxiety and the uncertainty of their future.
The ground rumbled once more and Sakura's, as well as the other ninjas, ears perked up from the faint sound of gushing wind at the other end of the tunnel.
Among the ninjas who tensed up at the sound was Iruka. His hand slowly shifted to touch the handle of his weapon attached to his hip as he slowly walked up towards the entrance.
"Everybody, stay calm!" He managed to yell as his heart pounded against his chest.
Parents lightly covered their children's lips with trembling and sweating palms as silence filled the air. And all of a sudden, a faint sound of footsteps broke the silence. A ninja is as quiet as an owl when they walk. However, those footsteps could be heard which means that it could be just another civilian and so his dread toned down, and the rest of the shinobi as well.
A black silhouette appeared from the end of the tunnel and Sakura immediately stood up, recognizing that familiar figure walking against the light even from a distance.
"Lhexi!" She yelled before she heaved a sigh of relief.
"Nee san...?" Konohamaru exhaled in the same manner.
"I'm glad you're here! Did Lady Tsunade send you to protect us?" The pinkette asked in a cheerful voice as she slowly walked towards the figure.
Konohamaru and the rest of his friends began to tear up as they all followed the pink-haired genin and they all cried out in relief. "Lhexi-nee chan! It was so scary!" Moegi complained but, before any of them could get close to the figure, Iruka and the rest of his squad blocked their way.
"Sensei! What are you doing?!" The grandson of the previous Hokage complained as his eyes landed on Iruka's worried expression.
"Everyone. Step back." The teacher's words were simple and concise and yet none of them understood.
"She's gonna protect us from the bad guys! Believe it! She's crazy strong you know!" The kids' words were filled with so much innocence.
Sakura's air of tranquility around her snapped into a tense atmosphere."Iruka-sensei...what's the matter...?"
Her emerald eyes which have been usually complimented by her female teammate flickered with fear the moment the backdrop of the light slowly died down, revealing the appearance of the girl standing in front of them.
Those clothes...those weapons...that headband...
Just from staring at the figure from head to toe, Sakura could immediately recognize the owner of the person wearing those clothes, and yet the familiar figure was unrecognizable. Instead of seeing the familiar night-black hair and those piercing purple eyes, Sakura met a different person--in her friend's clothes.
Asuna's golden orbs looked straightforward at the sight of the innocent lives who were unaware of her intentions behind her glowing gaze. Her fingers twitched in excitement, desperate and hungry to spill blood.
Everyone tensed at the low rumble coming from behind Asuna before Ryuujin appeared majestically as the terror and fear finally settled into the people's eyes.
With a tilt of a head to the side and a small smirk gracing her bruised lips, Asuna greeted with a small--"Hi!"
Sakura's POV
I don't understand. That's Lhexi, right? I mean she's wearing Lhexi's clothes.
But, clearly, it's not her. The girl standing before us wearing a malicious grin was far from Lhexi's looks. In contrast to Lhexi's calm and sharp purple eyes, this girl stared down upon us with a playful gaze with those golden orbs of hers that I have only heard from myths and tales.
Golden eyes. The mark of a Ryuugaime.
Weren't they annihilated...? So why is someone from that clan standing in front of us, looking at us like we're some source of amusement? My head was a jumble of confusing words as I tried to connect the puzzle pieces but, I couldn't get a clear picture of what was truly happening.
"I suggest that you drop your weapons...I don't quite like the sight of them you see..."
I snapped out of my thoughts, the moment I heard her voice once again. Her voice was like freshly baked chocolate chip cookies--sweet and fun, but that edge of dark chocolate makes it hard to say "no".
"You're clearly not a shinobi from our village. State your name and your business," the man beside Iruka-sensei kept his voice low but firm avoiding using any sharp tone that could aggravate our potential enemy. They were high on alert and on guard.
"My name...?" the girl smirks as she tilts her head lightly as if she were unsure of what to answer. "Hmm..."
Despite looking so tiny in comparison to the dragon beast behind her, I was afraid. She looked fragile, weak even, but, just what kind of monster was she to the point that she could tame another monster?
"You can call me Asuna-chan~," her soft giggles resonated within the walls. Her pupils moved to look at me--no--to look at the children behind me. "It would be nice to toy with his nephew as well..." I heard her whisper and I followed the trail of gaze before I realized she was looking at Konohamaru.
I stepped forward, hiding the little boy behind me. I moved out of pure instinct. Her eyes suddenly landed on mine and I froze like a rabbit. Now, I finally understand. Those golden eyes were a living reminder of why that infamous clan was immensely feared by the world.
"Get everyone out of here. That child...is not someone we can take on lightly....", I heard Iruka-sensei mutter of the blue as my seniors surrounded us, with their backs turned against us like they were making a barrier. Everyone was ushered to run as fast as possible and I looked behind us wondering how we could even escape from a closed system like this.
"Follow me. Hurry...!" Someone hissed at the very back of the crowd as he quietly pointed at an escape route I didn't know existed.
I was about to follow the crowd when I decided to look back and just then a loud screeching cry brought me to the reality of my world. Blood sprayed across the floor and I watched as the beast devoured a ninja's body with his bare fangs like it was a piece of meat.
A voice screamed in my head telling me to run away as fast as possible as tears brimmed on the corner of my eyes. I need to run. I need to survive. My parents are waiting for me. Before I could look away from the scene, I quickly recognized that something was wrong as the Konoha nins of my village fought the dragon despite being no match for its strength.
"That golden-eyed girl...she's...--"
"Missing?"
Before I could even finish my sentence, she was already in front of me. I froze in place as I slowly moved my head to my side.
"Y-you're---", I choked on my words. I could almost feel myself throwing up at the scent of iron surrounding her.
"Asuna," she interjects with that sweet grin of hers. A high-pitch screech caught me off my tracks and I looked to the side to see the dragon piercing its sharp fangs into the flesh of lifeless bodies, wearing the Konoha headbands. "Hey, look here---"
"What have you done?", this time I was the one who cut her off. "Why? Why would you do something horrible like this? I-I don't understand."
Instead of answering my question, she giggled like she found me adorable for clinging to hope amidst this despair.
From my earliest days, the sanctity of every life was instilled within me. In the academy, they etched it into my very soul — the value of every being, no matter how small. How can anyone snuff out lives with such ease, wearing a smile? I can't understand it.
"Adorable...! You're so adorable, Sakura-chan! Did I scare you? But you see, these shinobi are so weak and weaklings must be eradicated don't you think so too?"
In a flash, my fear transformed into anger as I clutched my fists in fury, struggling to maintain my composure.
"You're a monster...how can you laugh in this bloodshed?"
"Monster?", she asks in a mocking tone. "Perhaps...but you see, power defines the world, Sakura-chan. Because of power, you were able to trample on countless lives and destroy villages. Isn't that the reason why your village grew in prosperity?"
No! That's not true!
"You're wrong! What do you know about our village?!"
Konoha is not like that! This village is a special place. The people here are kind, and always ready for a helping hand. We're a big family looking out for each other so, hearing the opposite from our enemy made my blood boil in frustration.
"I know that there's more to the village than meets the eye but, everyone here fights to protect this peace! And I won't let you do any more damage to my village," I hissed as I pulled out my kunai from my pouch, ready to pounce on her.
I flicked my wrist as I plunged my kunai midair to stab her when she caught my kunai with ease and my breathing hitched. Her fingers tightly gripped the blade as her golden eyes glowed dark.
"Even if it meant taking the innocent lives of children?", the tone of her voice immediately switched from being playful to that of a low growl-like tone like she wanted to rip the skin off my flesh. "I don't blame you for growing up in a peaceful village but, you can't turn a blind eye to the atrocities your village committed for the sake of maintaining that peace."
The way her hand held my kunai and her stance made me assume that she was not an experienced fighter but, that was the last on my mind right now. Because I am painfully aware, that she can easily squash me like a bug if she wanted to. Her piercing gaze alone can make me shiver in agony and fear. Her other hand strangled me like phyton and I struggled to breathe.
Her formidable strength made up for her lack of skills that despite my attempts to escape, she won't even budge an inch. I was hovering in the air for what felt like an eternity before I was suddenly released and I dropped back to the ground. I punched my chest multiple times to get the air flowing back into my lungs as I threw up saliva on the ground.
"Well, enough of that. I don't wanna kill you yet, that woman might cut my head off once she comes back," she mumbles softly. "As much as I want to kill the lot of you, and enjoy the look on their faces, I want to ask you something first."
She turns around and walks towards the pile of corpses. My eyes widened. Those were the shinobi who were just talking to us a few moments ago. My vision suddenly turned blurry upon recognizing someone from them.
"Iruka-sensei...?"
His eyes were bloodshot and wide open as Asuna stepped on his ribs like a footstool and she did the same with the others, like they were simply stepping stones.
"Not bad," I hear her mumble as she sits at the top of the pile of dozens of shinobi, looking over me.
I couldn't hear anything after that. A broken telephone line buzzed through my ears repeatedly as I covered my mouth with my hands. His face was disfigured and his body was mutilated to the point that I wouldn't be able to recognize him if it wasn't for the familiar horizontal scar that ran through the bridge of his nose.
The air was heavy with an unsettling silence as I stood frozen with shock and fear. Piles of hopeless bodies, once vibrant with energy and purpose, now lay still and forgotten. Iruka-sensei's presence among them struck my heart like a dagger. I struggled to comprehend the brutality of the girl's actions.
The sound of snapping fingers echoed through the room, cutting through my daze. It was a sharp, attention-grabbing sound, pulling my eyes reluctantly toward Asuna. She flicked her fingers with an almost casual indifference. She didn't have to say a word, her intent was very clear:
"See the reality of the world."
