𝐓he classroom buzzed with the low hum of chatter. Sunlight streamed through the large windows, casting warm patches of light on the worn wooden desks. Na-hee sat next to Nam-ra, a notebook open in front of them, doodling while listening to the teacher's voice.
Na-hee's gaze landed on the front of the room, where the teacher was writing on the board, the chalk squeaking against the surface. As Na-hee's pencil danced across the page, they couldn't help but steal glances at Nam-ra, who was intently taking notes. The contrast between their carefree doodling and Nam-ra's focused demeanor made Na-hee smile.
As she looked in front of the classroom at their teacher, Dae-su suddenly turned around to face Na-hee, leaving her confused. She blinked her eyes repeatedly, trying to process the unexpected attention. "Kim Na-hee, right? My dear friend is interested in you" Dae-su teased with a playful smile, his eyes sparkling with mischief.
At that moment, Wu-jin, who was seated in front of Na-hee, turned around as their eyes met. A wave of embarrassment washed over his face, and he quickly hit Dae-su on the shoulder, careful not to make too much noise. "Hey, stop it, Dae-su!" Wu-jin whispered, his tone a mix of annoyance and concern. He then turned back to Na-hee, his expression softening. "Sorry about him, Na-hee" he said calmly, his voice barely above a whisper.
Na-hee nodded, a smile spreading across her face. "It's no problem, Wu-jin. I was really shocked to find out we go to the same school and are in the same classroom" she replied, her eyes sparkling with excitement. Wu-jin felt his lips curl into a shy smile, warmth creeping up his cheeks. "Yeah, it was unexpected" he agreed, his heart racing at the thought of their connection.
Dae-su, unable to contain his curiosity, kept glancing back and forth between the two. "So, you two know each other?" he asked, his interest deepen.
Na-hee smiled brightly, her cheeks slightly flushed. "Me and Wu-jin met. We're starting to become friends, I guess" she explained, her voice filled with a hint of pride. Dae-su made an "ah" sound, nodding as he teased Wu-jin playfully.
Just then, Nam-ra looked up from her writing, her expression serious. "Stop bothering her" she said firmly, directing her gaze at the two boys before returning to her work. The teacher, noticing the commotion, turned to the boys with a raised eyebrow. "Hey, what's with you, Dae-su and Wu-jin? Why are you bothering your new classmate?"
As the teacher's voice cut through the playful banter, Na-hee felt a mix of embarrassment and excitement. She glanced at Wu-jin, who was now fidgeting in his seat, clearly flustered by the sudden spotlight. Dae-su, on the other hand, wore a cheeky grin, clearly enjoying the moment.
"Sorry, sir! We were just welcoming Na-hee to our class" Dae-su said, his tone lighthearted as he leaned back in his chair, hands behind his head. The teacher sighed but couldn't help the hint of a smile tugging at the corners of his mouth.
"Well, just make sure your 'welcoming' doesn't disrupt the class" he replied, shaking his head in mock disapproval. The classroom settled back into its routine, but Na-hee could still feel the lingering energy from the earlier exchange.
As the lesson resumed, Na-hee found herself stealing glances at Wu-jin. He was focused on the teacher, but every now and then, he would catch her gaze and quickly look away, a shy smile creeping onto his lips. It was a sweet, innocent moment that made him crave her which makes his heart race.
The school bell finally rang, signaling that it was lunchtime. Na-hee neatly packed her notebooks and pens into her backpack, glancing around as some of her classmates hurriedly made their way to the cafeteria, their faces alight with hunger. As she finished tidying up, she looked up to find that Nam-ra had already stood up from her seat likely headed to grab her lunch.
Na-hee turned her gaze toward the large windows of their classroom, where the bright, sunny day outside made her lips curl into a smile without her even realizing it. The warmth of the sun felt inviting and a sense of happiness.
Just then, Na-yeon rushed to Na-hee, her energy through the roof, as she approached Na-hee's desk, which was next to Nam-ra's. Nam-ra shot Na-yeon a quick glance before standing up to leave, and Na-hee noticed the slight scoff that escaped Na-yeon's lips after Nam-ra was away.
Na-yeon turned her attention to Na-hee, her eyes sparkling with curiosity. "How is it? Your first day here?" she asked, a friendly smile spreading across her face.
"It's surprisingly good." Na-hee replied, her voice gaining confidence. "I know I'll be able to adapt to this school very soon." The sincerity in her words made her feel a little more at ease, and she could see the relief wash over Na-yeon's expression.
Na-yeon beamed at her response, clearly glad to hear that Na-hee was settling in. Just then, a few other classmates who had stayed in the classroom began to approach the two girls, drawn in by the sight of Na-yeon chatting with the new girl. They exchanged curious glances, likely wondering what Na-yeon was saying to Na-hee and eager to get to know her as well.
Feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness, Na-hee straightened her posture, maybe this school wouldn't be so daunting after all.
"Whoa, Na-yeon! Don't just keep the new student to yourself, we want to get to know her too!" Dae-su jokingly exclaimed, wrapping his arms around both Wu-jin and Joon-yeong in a playful embrace. Joon-yeong stared at Dae-su and Wu-jin in disbelief, a mix of confusion and annoyance flickering across his face. Why were they dragging him into this? But beneath that irritation, a spark of curiosity within him. He couldn't help but feel eager to learn more about the new girl. He glanced at the newcomer, hoping for a glimpse of her personality.
After Dae-su said that, he turned to Wu-jin and wiggled his eyebrows playfully, a mischievous grin spreading across his face. Wu-jin rolled his eyes in annoyance and promptly pushed Dae-su's hands away, clearly unimpressed. Joon-yeong, feeling the same irritation, mirrored Wu-jin's action, shoving Dae-su's arms off him as well.
Na-yeon watched the scene unfold, her expression shifting to one of annoyance. She crossed her arms, a protective instinct surging within her as she glared at the trio. "Why are you all here?" she asked, her tone sharp and defensive, clearly not pleased with them. It was seen that she was fiercely protective of her best friend, and she wasn't about to let anyone invade their space without a good reason. Her eyes narrowed slightly, challenging them to explain themselves as she stood her ground.
Na-hee sank deep into her seat, preparing for the storm that was about to happen. She could feel the tension in the air, heavy and thick, as Na-yeon's attitude was about to explode once again. Na-hee's heart raced as she remembered how Na-yeon often complained about their classmates. It confused her because everyone had been nice so far.
Still, Na-hee noticed that some classmates didn't like Na-yeon either, but their dislike wasn't as strong. She felt a mix of sympathy and confusion. Na-hee wanted to understand Na-yeon and what made her so angry, but the constant outbursts made it hard to get close.
As she looked at Na-yeon, whose face was filled with irritation, Na-hee couldn't help but wonder what was really going on inside her. What made her feel this way? The uncertainty made Na-hee feel anxious but also caring.
"Hey, Na-yeon, the world doesn't revolve around you" Ji-min said directly to Na-yeon's face. Hyo-ryung then slapped her shoulder playfully, but there was tension in the air.
Gyeong-su and Cheong-san glanced over at Na-hee's table, which was crowded with some of their classmates. Gyeong-su looked back at Cheong-san, curiosity in his eyes. "What? What's with the face?" Gyeong-su asked, noticing Cheong-san's interest. Cheong-san stole another glance at the new girl before turning back to Gyeong-su. "You want to get to know her too, don't you?" Gyeong-su chuckled, a mischievous grin spreading across his face.
With a playful shove, Gyeong-su made Cheong-san stand up from his seat, and together they headed toward Na-hee's chair. But as they approached, Na-yeon's blood boiled at the sight of Gyeong-su.
"Hey, what are you doing here?" she snapped, her voice sharp with anger.
"What? What's the matter?" Cheong-san replied, a hint of confusion in his tone.
"We want to know our new classmate as well" Gyeong-su said, waving cheerfully at Na-hee, trying to lighten the mood.
"Hey, you all get away! She's my best friend!" Na-yeon shouted, her frustration bubbling over.
"Best friend? Really? I highly doubt it with her nice attitude-" Dae-su started, but his words were suddenly cut off by Wu-jin's hand covering his mouth, sensing the rising tension.
Ji-min and Hyo-ryung slowly backed away from the group, their expressions uncertain. "Best friend?" Hyo-ryung repeated, her voice laced with doubt. "I guess so. Let's not get to know her too well, I think she'll be just like Na-yeon" Ji-min commented loudly as she turned to leave the room. "Ji-min, don't say that!" Hyo-ryung called after her, concern in her voice as she hurried to catch up.
Na-hee felt her smile slowly fade, a wave of sadness washing over her as she watched the group disperse. She couldn't shake the feeling of being hated, her heart sinking a little more with each passing moment.
"Hey, Lee Na-yeon, that's rude, you know?" I said to her sadden, but she looked at me in annoyance as she stared at me. "Hey, I'm just making sure they're not suffocating you, especially since it's your first day here. Be grateful I'm here to guide you!" Na-yeon said, rolling her eyes and then smiling softly at me. "But still, how am I supposed to make friends if you keep scaring them away like that?" Na-hee told her as she crossed her arms. "You don't need them, you have me!"
In the cafeteria, the boys gathered around the table, slowly eating the food they had for today. Dae-su, chewing loudly, broke the silence. "Do you believe she is friends with Na-yeon?" he asked, his voice filled with curiosity.
"Now they'll probably take turns making my school life miserable" Gyeong-su added, his voice heavy, a mix of frustration and sadness etched across his face.
Su-hyeok turned his head towards Dae-su, his eyebrows raised in surprise. "Who is?" he asked softly, trying to catch up.
"The new student. Na-yeon said she was her best friend" Joon-yeong replied, disbelief clear in his voice.
"I mean, like, how though?" Dae-su commented, shaking his head in confusion.
"Hey, you guys are judging her too quickly! We don't even know her yet" Cheong-san said, taking a sip of his water, his tone calm but firm.
Su-hyeok nodded, agreeing with Cheong-san. "Cheong-san's right. Just because she's friends with Na-yeon doesn't mean she's like her" he added, glancing around at his friends, trying to make them see his point. "I accidentally bumped into her this morning and made her drop her phone" Su-hyeok continued, taking a bite of his food. He remembered the moment cleary. "You know what happened? Instead of getting mad, she just apologized calmly."
As he chewed, Dae-su felt a wave of guilt wash over him. He realized he had judged her too quickly. Maybe she wasn't what he expected after all. Wu-jin didn't even realize how hard he was gripping the metal chopstick on his hand as he listened to them.
Earlier, Gyeong-su's heart dropped as he worried that Na-yeon might influence the new girl. He felt a tight knot in his stomach, realizing that their friendship didn't necessarily mean that Na-hee would be like Na-yeon. Joon-yeong also felt a bit hesitant earlier, his mind racing with doubts. As he thought about it, a pang of heartache washed over him. He realized he might not have trusted his instincts enough.
Earlier, Na-hee shared her delicious kimbap with Na-yeon, who absolutely loved it. After lunch, the two of them hurried back to their classroom, eager to avoid being late. They rushed inside, and as Na-yeon slid the door open, they both let out a relieved breath upon discovering that the teacher hadn't arrived yet.
Giggling with excitement, they exchanged playful glances. The noises of their classroom was filled with the soft chatter of their classmates. With smiles still plastered on their faces, they made their way inside the classroom, the warmth of their shared moment lingering in the air.
Na-yeon opened the door to our classroom, her mood changing when she saw a male classmate sitting in her seat. "Get out of there, hey, Gyeong-su!" Na-yeon yelled angrily at the boy.
Na-hee furrowed her eyebrows at Na-yeon's loud voice. The commotion made our classmates turn their heads toward Na-yeon, which made me feel awkward for her. I pulled Na-yeon back, but she stubbornly walked toward Gyeong-su to confront him. I deadpanned. *that poor guy.*
"Hey, Na-yeon, sorry! You don't need to be hot headed, especially when your best friend is here" Gyeong-su teased Na-yeon, which seemed to annoy her even more.
"Get out of my seat!" Na-yeon said to Gyeong-su one more time, hitting his arm. This made Gyeong-su mad, and he stood up from her seat.
"Hey, hey, hey! Gyeong-su, stop! You know Na-yeon" a male student stood in front of Gyeong-su before he could do anything to her. I looked at his name tag and saw his name was 'Lee Su-hyeok.' Oh yeah, did I forget this handsome guy is also my classmate? How ironic.
"Hey, Na-yeon, say sorry to him" I said to Na-yeon as she turned around to face me. I felt sorry for the boy, which annoyed her. "Na-hee, why should I? He's annoying and he stinks!"
"Hey, Na-yeon, take that back; that's rude!" Another male student confronted her. "Hey, Cheong-san, don't tell me what to do!" *Okay, Na-yeon really needs to calm down before she starts fighting everyone.* Na-hee thought in her mind.
I pulled Na-yeon back before another fight could start. "Na-yeon, it's okay, forgive Gyeong-su, he didn't do anything." I said to her. "Fine." she said stubbornly, finally sitting down in her seat.
"Wow, Na-yeon listened!" Dae-su yelled out happily. Na-yeon looked at him, glaring with her eyes, and he quickly looked away. I sighed at this. *How am I supposed to know anyone if Na-yeon keeps acting like my security guard?*
I looked down at her. "Na-yeon, say sorry to Gyeong-su" I stated seriously. "I don't want to." she replied, rolling her eyes. *This girl, I swear.* "Okay, fine then I will." I went ahead and walked towards Gyeong-su and his friends. "Yah! Kim Na-hee!" Na-yeon called out to Na-hee in annoyance as her face filled with irritation.
"Hey, Gyeong-su" I greeted him as he fixed his posture and stood up from his seat. "Uh, yes, Na-hee, right?" he stuttered, smiling at me.
"I'm here to apologize for Na-yeon, she's really stubborn" I smiled softly at him. "No! It's alright, she does this all the time. It's just getting really annoying" Gyeong-su chuckled. *All the time? She bullies him all the time'* I bowed my head lightly. "Sorry again for what Na-yeon has caused Gyeong-su. I swear she's a nice person... well, at least for me?" Gyeong-su laughed at this, amused by the sudden formality of my words. "No, it's really okay" he replied, smiling widely. "Nice meeting you, Gyeong-su." After that, I went towards Na-yeon to confront her again.
Gyeong-su followed me with his eyes, coming back to reality when a sudden hand tapped his shoulder. "Hey, are you okay?" Su-hyeok asked, laughing to himself as Gyeong-su nodded. "Yeah, why? What happened?" Gyeong-su asked, raising both of his eyebrows. "We saw you looking at Na-hee with heart eyes!" Dae-su teased, making a heart sign with his hands. "Yah! Whatever!" Gyeong-su sat down as he endured the teasing from his friends.
As I settled into my seat, Wu-jin turned around, his gaze locking onto mine. Na-hee felt a jolt of surprise at the intensity of his stare. "Yes?" she replied, her voice tinged with confusion. She instinctively tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear, trying to regain her composure.
"Sorry about them earlier, Na-hee" Wu-jin said sincerely, his head nodding towards the group that had been teasing her. Na-hee blinked, processing his words, and then nodded slowly, a hint of uncertainty in her eyes. "It's fine, don't worry" she reassured him, not sure why Wu-jin needs to apologize.
"I meant when the others crowded you earlier." Wu-jin added. Na-hee wore a flicker vulnerability lingered in her expression when Wu-jin told her that.
Wu-jin let out a small smirk, his eyes softening as he observed her. "I could tell you were upset earlier. You're very expressive, Na-hee" he confessed, his tone gentle yet teasing. Na-hee felt her cheeks warm at his words, a mix of embarrassment and gratitude washing over her. "Oh, huh" she replied, caught off guard.
"It's true, your smile faded when she said that" Wu-jin added, casting a quick glance at Ji-min, who had been the source of Na-hee's discomfort. Na-hee shook her head, trying to dismiss the lingering feelings. "It's fine, Wu-jin. I appreciate your concern" she said, offering him a cheeky smile, though her heart raced at the thought of his support.
Wu-jin's smile widened, a flicker of protectiveness shining in his eyes. "Just tell me if she upsets you again. I'll talk to her" he said, a hint of darkness creeping into his voice as he spoke. Na-hee felt a shiver run down her spine, both from his intensity and the warmth of his offer.
Na-yeon sat in her seat, her arms wrapped around her neck as she looked in the direction of Na-hee and Wu-jin. She buried her face in her arms, feeling a mix of annoyance and jealousy. *Wu-jin is talking to Na-hee as if he knew her better* and Na-yeon couldn't help but scoff at the sight. She observed the two closely, her heart sinking as she noticed Wu-jin's interest in Na-hee, which caught her off guard. Raising an eyebrow, she felt a flicker of unease wash over her when she saw a shadow of darkness flicker through Wu-jin's eyes, sending a shiver down her spine.
"What was that?" she whispered to herself, her voice barely audible, laced with confusion and fear. Huffing in frustration, she shook her head, trying to dismiss the unsettling feeling. "I must be going crazy." she muttered, feeling a mix of emotions swirling within her.
She doesn't feel jealous in 'THAT' way, it's more like a fear that someone might take Na-hee away from her. Na-hee has been Na-yeon's only true friend since childhood, always by her side. Na-yeon really values Na-hee and cares about her a lot. Even though she might act stubborn sometimes, it comes from a place of love. The thought of losing Na-hee makes her anxious because their friendship means everything to her. Na-hee's heart hurts at the idea of anyone coming between them, because Na-hee is not just a friend, she is her everything, the one who truly understands her.
