Silence filled their mother's car. Scott and Lucy had drove to meet Stiles as soon as he had called. Now, all three sat in silence as they stared at the yellow, red, and blue lights coming from the police cars and ambulances. The day before, while Lucy had been at work, Erica had destroyed the engine in Stiles' jeep. While his Jeep had been in service, Stiles had somehow found himself involved in yet another police investigation.
"How are you feeling?" Lucy asked softly from the backseat, leaning forward to rest a hand gently on Stiles' shoulder. This wasn't like before, when he would find the bodies. This time he had witnessed everything.
"I'm fine." He glanced at her hand and Lucy quickly retracted it. They had a fun time at the ice rink the other night and Lucy had even put the photos they'd gotten on her mirror, but she had to remind herself not to overstep. They were just friends, after all. "You were right Scott. It's not like you." Stiles admitted, referring to when Scott and Allison had found some sort of creature in the Lahey house. "I mean, it's eyes were almost like... reptilian. But there was something about them. You know when you see, like, a friend in a Halloween mask, but all you can actually see are their eyes and you feel like you know them, but you just can't figure out who it is?"
"Are you saying you know who it is?" Scott asked, his eyes full of worry for his friend.
"No, but I think it knew me." Stiles sighed, looking back out the window. Scott hummed in response as he started the ignition.
"I'm so sorry about the other day. I'm trying. We'll get through this. Uh, I know, because I love you." Stiles sighed, repeating to Scott what Allison had said. Thanks to her grandfather and parents, the two weren't allowed to speak. Which meant Lucy and Stiles had become messenger pigeons. "I love you more than- oh, my God. I can't! You and Allison just have to find a better way to communicate." Stiles yelled, throwing his hands up in the air.
"Come on, you two are the only ones that we can trust." Scott pleaded.
"I can keep doing it. But maybe it would be better for you guys to write letters? We can shred them when you're done so no one finds out." Lucy suggested, pulling an empty notebook to the top of the pile in her arms. She had two notebooks designated for her classes and her personal book.
"I guess that might work. I don't know." Scott ran his fingers through his hair. "Is she coming to the game tonight?"
"Yes! Okay, message complete. Now, tell me about your boss?" Stiles sighed, leaning his head back on the wall. Even though they were in the stairwell, there fellow classmates paid them no mind as they walked past.
"He thinks that Allison's family keeps some kind of, uh, records of all the things that they've hunted. Like a book."
That caught Lucy's attention, making her lift her head so she could look up to her brother.
"He probably means a bestiary." Stiles nodded.
"A what?" Scott asked, furrowing his eyebrows.
"It's like an encyclopedia of mythical creatures." Lucy explained. "But this one would obviously be about real creatures that they've found or hunted."
"How am I the only one who doesn't know anything about this stuff?" Scott huffed, crossing his arms.
"Okay, you're my best friend, you're a creature of the night, this is kind of like a priority of mine." Stiles rolled his eyes.
"Okay. If we can find it, it can tell us what this thing is and who it might be."
"We need to find it. Maybe Allison could do it?" Lucy suggested, knowing it would be easier for the Argent girl to find it. When Scott nodded in agreement, Stiles sighed and left to go find the girl.
"I could do it? You don't have to do everything!" Lucy called after him, watching the buzz-cut boy dismiss her with a wave of his hand.
"Why does your heart speed up when you're around him?" Scott asked, sitting next to his sister.
"It doesn't." Lucy replied plainly, gathering her things.
"It does. It did at the ice rink, a lot. It did when we picked him up from the repair shop and it did just now."
Lucy stood up quickly. "I don't know what you're implying Scott, but maybe it's just because I'm not used to being around him."
"That's a horrible excuse. Just be honest with me!" Scott pleaded.
"I am, Scott. I always have been." Lucy walked down the steps quickly, leaving her brother alone and confused in the stairwell.
Lucy found herself waiting outside the school building. She stood by herself, waiting for Stiles who had disappeared after the lacrosse match. He had snuck inside during the match to find the bestiary, which Allison had said would be in his office. The plan was for him to give it to Lucy, who would be able to read through it the fastest.
Footsteps pounded against the pavement and Lucy turned around, spotting her brother running towards her with his phone pressed to his ear. "Stiles, where are you? I need Gerard's keys; there's a USB drive on it. That's the bestiary." He yelled, ending the voicemail as he ran up to his sister.
"He hasn't come out yet." She said, rubbing her arms nervously. "It shouldn't be taking this long."
"Come on. We'll find him and the USB." Scott grabbed her wrist, leading her into the building. They ran through the hallways, making it to Gerard's office, the principal's office. Reaching the door, Scott pulled the keys from the lock.
"There." Lucy reached forward and grabbed the USB, pulling it off the keys. Before they could revel in their accomplishment, a shriek rippled through the school halls. "What was that?"
Scott glanced at his sister, worried for her safety. "That was the creature. Go back to your car. You have the USB so just go home and download it so you can give it back to Allison. Try to be quick so Gerard doesn't notice it missing." He took off, heading towards the sound.
"Scott! Wait! Stiles is still in here somewhere!" Sighing, Lucy pocketed the USB and followed her brother. She chased after him, the siblings ending up at the swimming pools. Lucy gasped, seeing Stiles struggling to keep a paralyzed Derek above water. Scott ran to their aid, his werewolf strength allowing him to lift them both out of the water and onto the tiled floor.
Lucy ran to Stiles' side, helping him onto his feet as Scott and the reptilian creature tumbled on the floor. Stiles took a protective step in front of Lucy, shielding her from the creature should it get closer to them. Swinging its scaled tail around Scott's foot, it threw him into one of the gym mirrors. Glass shards rained onto his body as he covered his eyes.
Scott stood up, holding a glass shard up. Noticing the creature's interest in the mirror, he tilted it towards the reptile. Hissing at the sight, it backed away and jumped up the railing and through the windows.
Lucy watched as the reptile ran off into the night, leaving them alone in the building. Scott groaned, walking back over to them. "What is that thing?" He mumbled under his breath as Derek slowly climbed to his feet.
"It's called a Kanima." He proclaimed, causing everyone to whip around to face him.
"You knew the whole time." Stiles spat, making sure to stand between the alpha and Lucy. Erica, who was walking up to Derek, titled her head.
"No. Only when it was confused by its own reflection."
"It doesn't know what it is." Lucy realized.
"Or who." Derek corrected. "I've only heard stories, rumors. It's like us in a sense. A shape-shifter, but it's not right. It's like an abomination."
"Derek?" Scott stepped forward. "We need to work together on this. Maybe even tell the Argent's."
"You trust them?"
"Nobody trusts anyone! That's the problem. While we're here, arguing about who's on what side, there's something scarier, stronger, and faster than any of us, and it's killing people, and we still don't even know anything about it." Scott yelled, moving forwards.
"I know one thing. When I find it? I'm going to kill it." Derek spat, walking away with Erica on his tail.
After dropping Stiles off at his house, Scott and Lucy finally made it home. Lucy was disgruntled to find that the bestiary wasn't written in English but saved everything from it to her laptop so she could get the USB back to Allison. Just as she was about to climb into bed, Scott appeared in her doorway.
"I told you to leave."
Lucy sighed, looking at her hands in her lap. "I know I'm not supposed to get too involved, but I can't stand by while you guys are in danger anymore."
"Lucy," Scott started, walking further into the room. "I heard what you said when I was looking for the Kamina. You were worried about Stiles."
"Of course I was worried about him. He's my friend." Lucy scoffed.
"Allison and Lydia are your friends too. Your heart doesn't race when they're around."
Lucy looked up at her brother. "What are you implying?"
"That you like Stiles." Scott looked at her sadly. "That he's your crush and that when you turn-"
"-I'm not like you, Scott."
"We don't know that yet." Scott kept his voice calm and soft, making Lucy feel guilty for getting irritated with him. "When, or if, you turn, you'll feel drawn to Stiles. That could be helpful for you, or it could put him in danger."
"You can't tell him, Scott, please." Lucy pleaded, her panic rising.
"I won't. But I am going to keep a close eye on you, just in case, okay?"
Lucy nodded. "Okay."
"Good." Scott smiled softly, rubbing her shoulder comfortingly before leaving her room just as fast as he had appeared. Lucy sighed, resting her head on her desk.
She couldn't be a werewolf, right?
Her heart pounded. The last thing she wanted to do was put Stiles in danger.
