Chapter 8
16:28, 12 February 2023Kat's P.O.V.
THE NEXT DAY I was casually walking around the school, holding my book and some already corrected test in my hands, before finding my way straight to my classroom. I didn't really want to do this anymore. I mean, I enjoyed teaching Latin, especially when some students asked me about the archaic version, since that's what I used instead of the now modern version when I was younger. Relatively younger.
Just before I could walk into the room I heard my name being called from the end of the hallway.
"Kat! Wait!" I turned towards the sound, only to be faced by Lydia and Alison hurrying towards me.
"Hey Lydia." I greeted her with a big smile "And Alison, right?" I asked turning to her "Hi. Everything's alright?" I looked between the two of them.
"Yes, Alison." she nodded.
"We'd like a little help. Do you have time?" Lydia turned to me.
"Knock yourselves out." the two girls turned towards each other, nodding, than Alison pulled out a tablet showing it to me. And after glancing at it I immediately realized what that was. Oh, fuck me...
"Me and my friends are in a online gaming community battling mythical creatures and we're doing some research on the world and creatures, but they're in archaic Latin, and we would like to ask for some help, if you don't-..." Alison started with a pretty good explanation which made me smile at the girls.
"That word" Lydia cut her off being impatient as always "What does it mean?" she asked, pointing at it.
"Um... Would you mind?" I asked Alison pointing at the tablet with an apologetic smile, since the text was way too small and far away from me, or for any normal being, to read it normally.
"Yeah, of course." she said handing it to me. Jackpot. I looked at the specific word Lydia showed me and quickly read the whole sentence at first. It was the same one Marin translated. Oh you bitch... I thought as I read the specific word.
"That one, it means master." I said looking at the two. I could see Lydia's proud smile plastered across her face, on the other hand, I saw pure panic on Alison's.
"I told you." Lydia shrugged her shoulders.
"You got that right? Oh, next time I see you I'm gonna give harder exercises or readings for home, so I'm not boring you with the too easy stuff." I laughed slightly.
"Challenge accepted." she grinned at me.
"Would you like anything else?" I asked looking at the two.
"Actually... Could you quickly translate the whole thing in one if you don't mind me asking?" Alison asked pleadingly "We tried with Lydia, but there were somethings even she couldn't translate."
"Sure. Not a problem." I nodded "But..." I started as I unlocked the door and stepped out of the way "Come on in, the others are too loud out here." I sighed and Lydia didn't need another word, she already walked pass me. Alison thought for a second, but after that she followed her friend and I went after them. I closed the door and put the things from my hand to the desk, then wet back to the tablet. "So... Would you like me to write it down, or..." Good thing I actually know what I'm ready, because I couldn't remember Marin's translation word by word and she only translated the first part. Now by reading it, it is actually a little relief to see she actually got everything right in the first part, except the 'friend'.
"Can I record you?" Alison asked pulling out her phone "If you don't mind."
"You can record, don't worry, I don't mind." I laughed slightly shaking my head, as I quickly read through it. Oh, sweet Jesus in Hell... Not good at all... After Alison signaled with a nod, that she is recording I went back to the text to start translating.
""Like the wolf, its power is greatest at the moon's peak. Like the wolf, the Kanima is a social creature, but where the wolf seeks a pack, the Kanima seeks a master. Kanima a weapon of vengeance is used to carry out the bidding of its master. The Kanima was once used by a South American priest who took it upon himself to rid his village of all murders. The bond between master and servant grew strong until the will of the master became part of the Kanima's and whoever the priest deemed unworthy the Kanime served his vengeance. The Kanima is mutation of the werewolf gene that cannot fully transform until it resolves that in its past which manifested it." "
I could hear a sigh of relief coming from Alison when she stopped recording, and I was also relived that I knew now what the hell was Marin lying about. Which is not suspicious at all... And I finally got some information myself
"That's all you need?" I asked her with a small smile.
"You're not even weirded out about it? Not even a little bit? Not confused, or..." asked Alison.
"No, not at all." I shook my head "You said that it's for an online gaming community, and these type of things our completely normal in that sense."
"I told you she's cool." Lydia chimed in, pointing at me while nodding her head.
"Oh, well thank you, M'lady." I winked at her smiling, which she kindly returned.
"Okay. Thank you very much." Alison gave me a sincere smile.
"You're welcome. If you're having problems with Latin, feel free the find me. And see you in class." I said the last sentence to Lydia with a smile while giving Allison back the tablet. After that, they left classroom and I stuck there with my papers, waiting for the bell to ring.
-----------------------------------
My day surprisingly went by pretty fast and it was actually calm, until the door of my classroom burst open with a not surprisingly angry Harris.
"You're going to help me."
"With what exactly?" I blinked at him in surprise "Cause that's pretty vague."
"Detention. Three o'clock. In the library." and with that he turned on heels at walked out. I glanced at the clock on the wall just to see the time.
"But it's two fifty-five already!" I called after him, as I stepped out the door.
"Then you better got going!" He didn't even turned back to me, just went straight in the direction of the library.
"Oh, you gotta be fucking kidding me..." I groaned letting my head fall back. I quickly put my things away in my bag and after I locked the door I followed the "older" man. I hate to play the young women in every work place...
Just as I stepped through the door it was already fifity-nine. The students were already seated and Harris was currently making a quick adjustment about it, since Jackson apparently got a restraining order against Stiles and Scott. I mean... Couldn't blame him in that matter...
"Fine. You two, over there." he instructed the guys and that's when he noticed me "You're late."
"It's only fifty-nine, and you're the one telling me to get my ass here at fifty-five." I told him as I put my bag down near the teacher's desk.
"Language." he narrowed his eyes at me, but when he turned around I rolled my eyes and flipped him off as I sat down, which made Scott and Stiles to let out silent laughs.
"Shh." I put my finger in front of my mouth with a grin. After that, I zoned out for a good couple of minutes. The only thing that suddenly brought me back was when I heard a question coming from Stiles, directed to Scott.
"Hey. What if it's Matt?" I slightly glanced at the direction of the boy then back at my phone "I mean, this whole things comes back to the video, right?"
"Danny said that Matt was the one who found the two hours of the footage missing." Which was already a good reason to be a suspect.
"Exactly." Stiles exclaimed "He's trying to throw suspicion off himself."
"So he makes Jackson kill Isaac's dad, one of Argent's hunters, and the mechanic working on your Jeep?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because... He's evil." I quietly scoffed, trying to not laugh out loud at the way he said it and Harris turned in my direction.
"What?" he started lifting up his hand still looking at me "Try to hit me and my next stop after this detention is HR." I give him az innocent smile, and he let his hand drop with a long exhalation. I turned away, still smiling only to see Scott looking at my way. I grabbed my phone, lifting it up, to show him that the screen has a meme on it. He just shook his head smiling and went back to talking. I had one job...
"You just don't like him."
"The guy bugs me. I don't know what it is. Just look at his face..." I also glanced at the direction to see him trying to offer some chips to Jackson, which he immediately declined.
"Any other theories?"
"I have to go to the bathroom." I suddenly heard Jackson as my head shot up. He didn't look so good.
"Are you alright?" Harris asked while he shot up from his seat "Hey, you don't look so good."
"I just need to get some water." he said walking out. Harris got up to go after him but first, he had to give some orders.
"No one leaves their seats." he said to the students, then he turned to me "And keep them in line."
"Ay, ay, Captain." I saluted after him, watching him intently, but when he closed the door I got up to walk to it and see how far he is. When I couldn't see him anywhere I walked back to the chair and sat back down, only to face all of the students watching me with anticipation "Believe me, I don't care." I said as I put my leg up on the table, leaning back. Just as on cue, Stiles and Scott ran to Erica and sat down.
"Stiles said you know how Jackson's parents died."
"Maybe." she answered.
"Talk."
"It was a car accident. My dad was the insurance investigator, and every time he sees Jackson drive by in his Porsche, he makes some comment about the huge settlement he'll getting when he's eighteen."
"So not only is Jackson rich now, he's getting even richer at eighteen?" Stiles asked for clarification.
"Yep."
"There's something so deeply wrong with that..." I couldn't agree more.
"You know what?" Erica reached for her laptop, but stopped immediately and instead she turned towards me "Kat!" I lifted my head up to look at her.
"Huh?"
"Do you mind?" she asked gesturing to the laptop.
"As long as your not on PornHub, I couldn't care less." I smiled at her, and she gave me a wink in return before turning back to the boys.
"I could try to find the insurance report in my dad's inbox. He keeps everything." when she started typing suddenly the school radio went off.
"Scott McCall, please report to the principal's office." unfortunately, I also recognized that voice. Victoria Argent. Wonderful... First your dear father, now you... Just already name the school Argent's High, for heavens sake..
And after that, I zoned out as usual.
-----------------------------------
I didn't know how long was I out of this Earth but the only thing I realized was Harris zipping his bag next to me. I had a feeling what was coming, so I put my head on my hands with a sigh. What a dick.
"Oh, I'm sorry." He said laughing while students were ready to leave. "Uh, yes, I'm leaving. But none of you are. Not even you." he pointed it me.
"What a surprise..." I threw my hands up sarcastically.
"You may go when you're done with the re-shelving." he cut me off while giving a pat to the books "Enjoy the rest of your evening."
"Dick..." I mumbled under my breath as I got up "Okay guys, let's get this done quickly so we can all say goodbye to each other." I said while stepping toward the books.
"And what are you doing?" Stiles asked me.
"Do you have only one question for me at all times?" I asked "Helping, obviously. I don't wanna be here anymore than you do, believe me." I said while nodding as we all got to work with no will to live anymore.
After a while Scott got back, and I found myself helping Erica. The only thing I asked from her was to keep her mouth shut about us. And surprisingly she complied pretty well.
Suddenly, all hell broke loose, at first only a lamp got kick off the ceiling which caused all werewolf to go full fangs and eyes out. I covered my head as the Kanima went above us and broke another lamp. I quickly turned around in the direction of Erica, only to found it behind her.
"Erica!" I called out but I was too late since it already sliced at the back of her neck, making her fall to the ground. I ran towards her, kneeling on her side, not even caring about the fact that the broken glass from the lamp is slowly piercing through my skin. I got a hold of her, pulling her in my lap to keep her up while I looked in the direction of the board where a half transformed Jackson was subconsciously writing with chalk. Which looked more then creepy, you could clearly see that he was only a puppet, or even a pawn in his master's plan. After a minute a sentence was formed:
STAY OUT OF MY WAY OR I'LL KILL YOU ALL
And with that, he was gone.
"Guys! Hey!" I exclaimed as Erica started to have a seizure, I held her closer in my arms trying to keep her hands down.
"Oh, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey!" I heard Stiles as he rushed towards us, kneeling on the other side of Erica "I think she's having a seizure."
"You don't say?!" I looked at him as if I was Nicholas Cage. He just rolled his eyes as we tried desperately to somehow get Erica through it.
"He's alive." we heard Alison from the other isle.
"Hey, we need to get her to a hospital." said Stiles.
"D-Derek. Only Derek." Erica asked, looking at me.
"When we get her to the hospital..." Scott started to say to Alison until I cut him off.
"She asked for Derek."
"To Derek." she conformed my words with a nod.
"Kat, I don't think you know what you're getting-" Stiles said, but I cut him off too.
"Yeah, we can save explanations and the catching up for later. We need to get Erica out of here."
"We? What we?" Stiles looked at me like I head two heads.
"Heard me."
"Go." we heard Alison say, and after a second Scott rushed to her.
"Hey, Scott!" we shouted at the same time with Stiles.
"We gotta go." I said as I took Erica in my arm and stood up.
"Hey, you can't be serious." he said in disbelief, looking at Erica in my arms.
"I'm stronger than I let on." I said shrugging my shoulders "Scott, staying or leaving?"
"Leaving" he said with a sigh and he just took Erica from my arms.
"Thanks, but I got it." I rolled my eyes, as a followed them to the parking lot. After a minute of convincing them that it is a good idea them I'm going with them I got into the backseat with Erica, laying her head in my lap and we headed to Derek's dear lair.
-----------------------------------
When we arrived Scott got Erica into his arms again and we headed inside. To both of the boys surprise and disapprove I walked in front of them and led them down the stairs.
"D! Get your ass out here!" I shouted and soon enough he run towards us and took Erica from Scott, he then rushed towards the train to place her on its floor.
"Pull her up!" he instructed us, Stiles quickly got behind her for support and I took her right hand. I closed my eyes for a second to say the incantation in my head, I only performed a minor healing spell to ease her pain.
"Is she dying?" Stiles asked with worry in his voice.
"She might, I..."
"D... Break a bone." I said with a sigh and he got a quick hold of her arm.
"This is gonna hurt." and with one swift motion he broke a bone. As soon as he did that Erica started screaming in pain. I tightened my hold on her arm, also powering up the spell.
"You broke her arm?!" Stiles yelled.
"It'll trigger the healing process." I answered instead of Derek.
"I still got to get the venom out. This is where it's really gonna hurt." Derek exhaled loudly as he tightened his grip on her arm, making the crimson red blood to ooze out of her in between loud screams.
"Erica, it's okay, it has to be done." I tried calming her, even though I wouldn't help at all. But at least I tried with something else while keeping up the magic. After seconds the screaming stopped. Erica only panted as she fell back into Stiles, her gaze flickering between him and I.
"Stiles... You make a good Batman. And Kat... You're actually a... Guardian demon." she said weakly as she tried to gather her breathing. Did Derek sometimes refer to me as a Guardian Demon in front of his new pack? Sure, he did. But was he wrong...? Not really at this point.
"Derek." Scott spoke up after a couple of minutes. "We need to talk." the older man nodded and the two of them got out of the train, leaving me with Stiles and a now unconscious Erica. I sat down and pulled my legs closer to me so I could start picking out the little shards of glass from my knees.
"So..." Stiles spoke up when the two got further away from us.
"Yes?" I looked up at him as I unnoticeably performed a non-verbal spell so the werewolves couldn't hear anything we're saying.
"The whole translating thing, today the detention and now... You weren't freaked out because you knew all along." Stiles said after he gathered his thoughts. "Oh, my god, what happened? You're bleeding!"
"I mean... You're not wrong." I said with a sigh. "Oh, it's nothing." I waved a hands "It'll heal sooner or later." Or in less than a minute.
"What are you?" he asked barely audible, and I was pretty sure if I wasn't supernatural, I wouldn't have heard anything.
"Huh?"
"What are you?" he asked louder but it was still quite.
"I'm only human." I said with a faint hint of a smile.
"Yes... And somehow I just don't believe you."
"Can we stay with "soon to be disclosed" for now?" I asked hopefully, since I didn't want to fully out myself to them just yet. I wasn't even planning on coming here with them in the first place, but leaving Erica was not an option, even though she sure knew how to piss me off I still liked the girl, a little bit.
"So you are supernatural." he asked for conformation, but it came out more as a statement than a question.
"Yes." I nodded "But can we keep that between us for now?" I asked hopefully and he gave me a nod.
"How did we not know?" he asked, more himself than me.
"If you're trying to refer to "why Scott couldn't sniff me out", is because I mask my scent at all times."
"So you're a werewolf? How do you even mask that?" and the questions are already piling up.
"I didn't say that I'm a wolf." I hold up a finger "Magic tricks." I winked at him with a half smile. I technically, I wasn't lying with that answer at all. "I just know my way around the supernatural."
"How old are you?"
"Well, that's for me know, and for you to dot, dot, dot..." a smirked at him to which he reacted with a loud scoff.
"Okay-okay." he threw his hands up as he sat on the ground, now being in a more comfortable position "Are you an actual teacher then? Or is it all just part of a scheme in which Derek is spying on Scott by using you?" he asked the one million dollar question.
"If the real question is if I'm qualified to do my job or not, than yes, I've actually finished the school for that." I let out a sigh as I brushed my fingers through my hair "And maybe Derek did have some say in the fact that I'm in Beacon Hills, but he's not instructing me to spy on Scott or you for that matter."
"How do you even know him?!" he whisper-yelled, throwing his hand around in misbelief.
"Known him for way more than ten years." I answered with a smile, than I turned my head in the direction of said man. My smile was slowly fading away and was replaced with an expression that just radiated sadness. "We took him and Laura under our wig. Well, mostly under mine. After the Hale fire." I said in barely a whisper and for a while we just sat there in silence, looking after Erica, but sometimes we glanced in the direction of the two werewolves. I eventually cleared my throat, standing up.
"Well, that was an eventful day, but I better get going." I dusted off my jeans "Now, try not to get in more trouble." I winked at Stiles as I jumped down from the train.
"I can do that." I started to head to the stairs when Stiles shouted after me "Kat!" I stopped and turned back around to face him "Thank you... Today. For helping us."
"Truly, I didn't do anything." I smiled at him weakly, then I turned around and finally headed home after sending a wave to Derek and Scott.
