05:51, 7 August 2023I parked my machine beside Barry's and walked up to raptor paddock while looking around. My eyes then landed on my best friend up on the catwalk, a clicker in his hand while he trained and feed his raptors: Charlie, Echo, Delta and Blue.
After he told the four raptors they're free to go and Barry went to congratulate him, I climbed the stairs up and waited for the two to notice me, which took them some time. Owen finally lifted his gaze and grinned when seeing me standing aside.
"Took you long enough to get here. You missed all the fun." He said loud for me to hear over the workers working and I smirked.
"I had enough of my own fun. Don't worry." When Owen reached me, he wrapped his big arms around my body into crushing bear hug.
"Hi, Barry." I waved at our black friend over my best friend's shoulder.
"Hi." Barry grinned. Barry is a black man and caretaker of the raptors and even though I'm not so close with him like with Owen, I like to call him my very good friend. He's been working here a year longer than Owen.
Then a very annoying voice we wished to not hear this day called to us. "Owen. I was starting to think I hired the wrong guys..." Hoskins walked up to us with his annoying laugh, annoying face, annoying grin, in one word he's annoying bastart I'd like to serve Rexy for dinner. "but damn, you got them eating out of your palm."
"You came on a good day. It's not usually a happy ending." In Owen's voice you can hear he's trying to stay calm and ignore Hoskins annoying presence. Please, go away, monkey face.
"Is that why you're not sending in your reports?" Owen and Hoskins shook hands while I stood aside with crossed arms, glaring daggers at him.
"We've been busy." Barry replied.
"Not too busy to cash your paychecks." Hoskins tried to make a joke, though no one laughed. I'm starting to lose my patience with him and spoke up finally.
"What do you want, monkey face?" The named one turned his attention to me, ignoring the way I called him.
"Oh, Dino Mama. I haven't seen you in some time." Hoskins leaned with one arm on the railing, other hand on his hip. I rolled my eyes at him.
"I wanted to keep it longer but you know, you had to show up with your ugly face." Hoskins was about to argue before Owen stepped closer to me, glaring at the man all three of us would like to throw over this railing and let the raptors feed on him.
"What is it?"
"A field test." At Hoskins response we rolled eyes and turned around to leave with Hoskins trailing after us. "Hey. I've just seen they can respond to commands. We need to take the research and get it on its feet."
"These are wild animals, Hoskins. Trust me, you don't want them in the field." Owen said, never stopping walking.
"I just saw a bond. A real bond. Between man and beast." Hoskins blocked our way by stepping in front of us and making Owen almost bumb into me.
"You're in our way, ugly face." From behind me, Owen pinched my arm to shut me up but instead I elbowed him in the stomach.
"Come on. We are the same. We're dogs of war. We know that military needs to reduce casualties. Some people think that robots are the future." Rolling again my eyes, I walked around Hoskins with Owen following suit, not forgetting to bumb my shoulder with Hoskins'. "Look, nature gave us the most effective killing machines 75 million years ago. and now we know they can take orders."
"We finally make progress and that's the first thing he says? Make a weapon?" Barry, who took another way to go, walked up to us again. Yeah, I'm asking myself too if he's worth my nerves..................he's not.
"Shit. Come on, gents. It's grown-up time. Drones can't search tunnels and caves. And they're hackable. The minute a real war breaks out, all that fancy teach is gonna go dark." Hoskins continued. He's still trying?
"But that tech's not gonna eat them if they forget to feed it." I chuckled at Owen's remark.
"Look at these creatures." Hoskins gestured to the four raptor girls in the paddock, who only watched Hoskins with the lust to eat him. I'm considering if I should give him a little nudge. "They've got millions of years of instinct in their cells, instinct that we can program. their loyalty cannot be bought. These guys are gonna run straight into the enemy's teeth and eat them."
Barry decide to pipe in with a good thought. "What if they decide they wanna be in control?"
"Well, then we remind them who is. We terminate the rogues. Promote only loyal bloodlines." Barry started laughing at what ugly face said and better walked away. "What? What's so funny."
"Do you ever hear yourself? You come here and learn about these animals only what you want to know. Never decide to think or learn something more about how these animals think and live. They have their own minds which we can't control and never will." Hoskins turned to me.
"What would you know, missy?" In dangerous way I tilt my head with death glare, telling myself to hold it for a little longer. The last time I lunged at him they sedated me.
"Did you forget who I am? Who experienced the real hell of survive zone on this island?" I paused, bitting my bottom lip and shaking my head. "No, you know nothing about them. You have no right to gain any control over them." And with this I walked away from ugly face and Owen, who's look I ignored.
I decided to walk on the cat walk, leaning against railing while watching the raptors play. If only Rexy had someone else to play with than me. To be honest, I'm glad it's only me and Rexy, but sometimes I feel like one day I won't be able to see her anymore and she'll end up alone. And I don't want her to feel lonely.
My thoughts drift to Inza's birth. If Inza hadn't eaten her brother, she might be a little different. I don't know how and I don't even know why she killed her own brother. They knew each other only for few hours and she decided to kill him.
With my thoughts elsewhere I didn't notice the pig go loose until a boy younger than me started yelling. "Pig loose! Pig loose!" With the pig-grab he tried to grab the pig but before he could pull it up, Blue snatched the pig and made the boy go over the railing.
My instinct kicked in and I ran to try and save the kid's life. My hand managed to get ahold of his leg but he's to heavy for me to hold and I went down with him, a yelp escaping me. I didn't think my landing 's gonna be hard enough to knock me out, but it did.
Third person pov
Owen heard the yelling and turned, his eyes widening with horror when he realized the woman that tried to save the kid's life and fell into the paddock with him is actually his best friend. And by the looks of her not moving she's knocked out cold.
Immediately Owen didn't hesitate to open the falling gate and crawl under it, standing up and running to save his Jane. And that kid.
"No, no, no! Hold your fire!" Owen stopped between the kid and his raptors, taking their attention on himself. Unfortunately he can't get to Jane who's lying behind the raptors. Panic filled him. "Hold your fire. Don't fire. Put 12 amps in these animals they're never gonna trust me again." He told the men with guns above them.
The kid that fell in with Jane crawled frightened backwards into the cage where Barry helped him in. Barry watched his friends in the padock, worry filling him. Not only that Owen is free for them to eat but so is Jane! And to that she's knocked out.
"Blue, stand down. Stand down." Owen told Blue with his arm stretched out, watching his raptors' every move. Blue shrieked at him. "Hey. What did I just say? Delta, I see you. Back up! Okay. Good. Charlie? Stay right there. Good." Owen said while watching his raptors while thinking how to get Jane out of this, and he came up with nothing.
Suddenly from behind the raptors came a grunt and then groan, catching their attention. Bigger panic filled Owen when his raptors turned around to look at Jane laying there, their attention no longer on their alpha.
Jane started to slowly wake up, her hand going up to her head she hit when landed. Nonetheless she's still not awake enough to look around herself, at the situation and realize what shit she fell in.
What woke her up is when Blue shrieked and jumped at Jane. "No!" Owen yelled, afraid his best friend might die. Startled Jane leaned on her elbows while Blue hovered above her.
Instead of eating her or growling Blue held confused look on her face. They all watched the beta raptor sniff Jane and then rise her head, turning and telling something to her sisters. The guards, workers, Barry, Owen and Jane can't understand that Blue is talking about Jane's scent, which matches them a little. They can feel other two different ones, but the third one is like theirs.
"Owen, go into the cage. Don't worry about me." Without looking at him, Jane told Owen. He looked at her like she grew two more heads.
"Are you crazy?" He hissed.
"Yes. Now go." Owen know he can't argue with Grant and did as was told, worries never leaving him.Blue got off Jane to give her some room and stood beside her.
Still careful with her movoments Jane stood up slowly, not breaking eye contact with the beta. She almost jumped out of her skin when Blue used her head to nudge Jane towards the falling gate where Owen, Barry and the kid is, watching it all.
"You're letting me go?" Like if the dinosaur could answer her, Jane asked. To her surprise, Blue nodded her head a little. And so she did, started slowly making her way into the cage with her back never facing the raptors.
Memory of when she was 7 and injected those three liquids into her arm jumped in her mind, thinking if it's the reason why they acting like this.
Finally in the cage, Barry pushed the button, letting the falling gate separate them from the raptors. Right away Owen wrapped his arms around Jane, running his fingers between her brown hair. Instead of hugging back Jane kept holding eye contact with the raptor that has blue stripe on each her side of her body.
The last time she was this close with Owen's raptors was when they were only babies. After they grew up over a year, they were too dangerous for her to risk having arm bitten off. And now, not her nor Owen were this close to them ever since they grew up.
"Crazy woman. Don't you dare ever do this to me again, you understand, sweetcheeks?" Owen gripped her shoulder, giving her a stern look like would mother give to her child that just shit their pants. Jane could bring herself only to nod. After a while she sighed, relaxing her shoulders and turned to the new kid.
"You're the new guy, right?" The kid nodded, panting from what he saw and experienced not a long ago.
"Yeah.""And you ever wondered why they hired you in? Next time don't turn your back there." On time, Charlie growled from behind the kid, having her snout and claws sticking between the bars and scaring him.
Owen threw arm around Jane's shoulders, sharing a look with Hoskins before they walked out and to their bikes. Both of them know a lot had happened today and it's only half the day. Every day happens something.
"Your place or mine?" Jane asked, suiting back into her usual self and putting on goofy smile.
"Mine. We were at yours the last time." Jane gave him wierd look.
"No. We were at yours the last time." They threw one leg over the seat, both of them starting their own machine.
"Whatever you say, pretty lady." Owen winked at which Jane stick her tongue out. She gave him teasing smile before taking off.
"Race ya!"
