Throwing Hands

05:26, 21 April 2022

Dragging Camilo down the staircase with you, you both made your way to the courtyard. Seeing how the rest of the family was getting ready to leave the house, you hurried and rushed over to them.

"Perfect. Just in time." You smiled, sprinting up to the others.

"Okay, so, we'll do our part, help the townspeople, blah, blah, blah, and then I'll see you after." You whispered into Camilo's ear, your warm breath sending shivers down his spine.

"But what if I don't wanna do my part? What if I wanna spend the whole day with you?" He whispered back.

You laughed softly. "You don't have a choice, mi amor. The faster you get stuff done, the sooner you'll be able to see me."

"Uh huh. Says the one who is still holding my hand." He smirked, holding up his hand that you still had a tight grip on.

"Oh, my bad." You apologized and let go of his hand, the warmth from your hand leaving his.

Camilo frowned. "Aw, why'd you let go?" He was about to grab your hand again when you pulled it away before he could.

He stared at you with a confused look on his face.

"Like I said, the faster you get stuff done, the sooner you'll be able to see me." The smirk that was on his face before was now on yours.

He squinted his eyes at you. "Alright, then." He chuckled.

As you and the Madrigals walked out the front doors, you all dispersed and went your separate ways. A group of kids started geeking out as you guys walked past them.

"Oh my gosh, it's them!" They exclaimed.

"What are the gifts?" One asked. "I can't remember all the gifts!"

"But I don't know who is who!" Another said.

"Alright, alright. Slow down. One at a time." Mirabel said, adjusting her walking speed.

They bombarded her with handfuls of questions, slowing her down from the rest of the group.

Turning around, you walked backward, so that you were facing Mirabel. You chuckled at the situation she was in and waved goodbye to her.

Looking up from the group of kids at her feet, she laughed nervously and waved back. You then went to go look for some townspeople in need of help.

~An hour later~

After helping most of the townspeople, you were finally on your last task of the day. You only needed to help a family water their garden and then you'd finish for the day. It also meant that you'd be able to see Camilo.

While you did that, you also happened to stumble across Mirabel. You watched from afar as she tried to escape the bickering and never-ending questions. Laughing, you continued to help water the garden.

Using your powers, you gathered the water from the nearby river and brought it over to the house. Shaping it so that it was a sheet of water, you carefully laid it down on top of the soil. The water then disappeared as it seeped into the dirt.

With that done, you dusted off your hands and placed them on your hips.

"There you go, Mr. and Mrs. Sánchez." You said with pride.

Sometimes, your powers weren't all that bad. You loved how you could use them to help others in need.

"Oh, thank you so much, (Y/N). You don't know how much this means to us." Mr. Sánchez said.

"Of course, it's no problem. If you ever need any more help, I'm always here." You offered, exiting their garden through their back gate.

"Alright. Again, thank you, (Y/N)." Mrs. Sánchez waved.

Waving back, you turned around only to be stopped by a couple of kids in front of you. By the looks of it, they seemed to be about a year or two older than you.

Their stances were intimidating and the looks on their faces seemed threatening. They stood so close to you, you could smell them. And they smelled like trouble...

"Um, can I... help you?" You asked.

None of them responded. They only looked at you, their eyes glaring menacing daggers at your smaller form.

"Alright... if you don't need any help, I'm just gonna be on my way, then." You walked around them, only to be pushed to the ground by one of them.

"Hey, I think that girl's in trouble." A kid pointed out to Mirabel.

Mirabel turned her head to where the child was pointing and saw what was happening to you. She then tried to get the kids off of her so she could rush over and save you.

"Hey!" You shouted, propping yourself up on your elbows.

"You're not even part of the Madrigals. You shouldn't even have those powers." The one who pushed you down rudely said.

"Is that what this is about-" You couldn't even finish your sentence as you took a blow to the face.

The side of your face swelled up and bruised and you spat out a bit of blood caused from the impact on the side of your face. Coughing, you tried to crawl away when a foot was placed on the left side of your face.

"No wonder the Madrigals had to take you in. Your own parents didn't even love you." Another said through gritted teeth.

With every spoken word, more pressure would be pressed into your face. The other side of your face was smushed, being smothered into the dirt. You had absolutely no idea what you did to these guys to make you their target. But your eyes watered from the physical pain and from the pain you felt from their words.

"Hey! Leave her alone!" Mirabel yelled, darting over to the scene. Although she was only about twenty feet away, she was still too late to prevent what had already happened.

You felt the pressure disappear, the foot lifting from off your face. You turned your head, readjusting it from its uncomfortable position.

Through your teary eyes, you saw as another punch was about to be thrown. So you quickly rolled over to the side and kicked the guy in the jaw. He fell back to the ground, clenching his jaw with his hand.

Swiftly getting up, Mirabel had finally arrived.

"(Y/N)! I saw what happened. Are you alright?" She asked, concern hinted in her voice and worry written all over her face.

"H-Huh? Oh, yeah. I'm totally fine. No, yeah, I get punched in the face almost every single day. It's practically normal." You joked.

"(Y/N), this is no time to be joking around. You seriously gotta get that treated." She said, talking about your face.

"Yeah, okay. We were just about finished here anyway..." You turned your head to look back at the guys that started this entire thing. "Weren't we?"

Your eyes had glowed a bright white, becoming pupil-less within seconds. You, however, were unaware of this.

Fear and horror had replaced their intimidation and confidence as they saw your face. Without giving a response, they ran off, never to be seen again.

Mirabel watched in confusion as they did so. "What was that all about?" She questioned.

Turning back to look at her, your eyes had changed back to normal.

"Beats me." You shrugged, standing up, which was a terrible idea.

Your head pounded, and it felt as if the world was spinning. You stumbled when you got back onto your feet, and luckily, Mirabel was there to catch you.

"Jeez, they really did a number on you, didn't they?" Mirabel said, supporting your body as you guys walked home.

"Pssh, it was nothing." You lied. You felt absolutely awful. "Enough about me, though. Where are those kids that were questioning you about the family and stuff?" Your words slurred.

"You mean us?" A voice from behind you two chirped.

Turning around, you both saw the same group of kids who were bothering Mirabel earlier.

"Ah, hi... again." Mirabel grinned hesitantly.

"Isabela, are we almost home?" You asked as you slowly lost consciousness.

"'Isabela'?" Mirabel questioned, making her really question the state you were in.

You lost your footing and almost slipped, almost bringing Mirabel down with you.

"Whoa! (Y/N)?" She called out, inspecting your face.

You hummed in response, letting her know you were still alive and not dead.

"Is she okay?" One kid asked. "She doesn't look so good."

"She's fine. She just... got into a misunderstanding with some of the kids in town." Mirabel explained, attempting to make it sound more kid-friendly.

"Are you sure? Does she need our help?" They all asked.

Another kid gasped. "Is she going to die?"

Mirabel laughed. "She's not going to die. Right, (Y/N)?"

You didn't respond.

"(Y/N)?" She called out a second time.

You immediately shot up, but regretted it as it dealt more pain to your head. "Huh? Yeah, sure, sure, whatever. Are we home yet?" You asked.

"Oh my gosh, she's going to die!" A kid freaked out.

They all freaked out and screamed, probably alerting half the town. You groaned and shut your eyes in pain from the loud commotion.

Rolling her eyes and ignoring them, Mirabel answered your question. "Yep, we're here."

Casita opened the front doors, revealing Abuela, who was already about to open them.

"Mirabel, what's happening?" She asked before spotting your weak form.

Dropping the flower vase she was holding, she rushed over to you. Seeing this from out of your half-lidded eyes, you raised your hand. Using your powers, you set down the vase so that it didn't break upon impact with the floor.

"(Y/N), what happened?" Abuela asked, helping Mirabel walk you inside the house.

"I don't know exactly how it started, but from what I saw, she got into a fight with some kids in the village." She answered for you. "Kids being... sixteen- and seventeen-year-olds."

"Ay..." Abuela muttered. "Julieta!" She called, summoning her daughter.

Tía Julieta gasped, seeing the condition you were in. Understanding what to do, she dashed to the kitchen to make some arepas.

"Everything's going to be fine, alright, (Y/N)?" Mirabel said, checking in with you again.

She received no response.

"(Y/N)?" Abuela also said.

Your body became heavier in their arms, forcing them to put all of their strength into carrying you. Furrowing her brows, Abuela looked at you and then at Mirabel.

She didn't have the time to be caring for your well-being right now. She had to help make sure tonight was going to be perfect for Antonio's ceremony.

She just couldn't risk it after what happened during the last ceremony.

"Mirabel, help take care of (Y/N). I have some things to attend to." Abuela said, fully handing you over to Mirabel.

An angry glower appeared on Mirabel's face as she stared at Abuela. She watched as Abuela went to pick up the flower vase and then walk away.

"Don't worry. Everything's going to be okay..." Mirabel reassured you... and herself.
