Chapter 5: Checkmate

(KAYLA'S POV)

"So, how was chess today Kayla?" my mom asked excitedly as she led me out of the game centre. I started to talk, telling her how I won in monotone. I really wasn't nearly as happy as she was. As we neared the shop exit, I saw a group of boys by the register. They weren't like the other boys that came in the shop. They looked...cool. Although, One of them was wearing suspenders. It was weird though, he managed to make them look awesome. I watched a bit longer, spotting the boy who I had talked to a minute ago. Zayn.

He was having a discussion with those guys. The blonde one wearing a polo was laughing at him. The one with the plaid shirt told him something, and Zayns face whitened a bit. Looking angry with himself, he ran back into the room I had left only second ago. He emerged a minute later, looking defeated.

I wondered what he was looking for. Shrugging to myself, I left with my mom. I'd see him around, maybe. I kindof wish he'd given me his number...or maybe I should've asked for it. Do girls do that? Ask for a guys number? I think that'd be weird...whatever. He probably only spoke to me cuz I was the only non-nerd girl in there. I followed my mom into the car, before realizing she had been talking to me the whole time. I guess I had tuned her out...oops.

"Kayla Annette Wood! Ive asked you a question." my mom cried, using my full name to signify how annoyed she was.

"Sorry. Er, I was distracted." I said quickly. My mom sighed and repeated,

"How many chess matches have you won in a row then? Was This your tenth one?" she asked. I shrugged.

"I forget." I admitted, not really caring.

"Oh, well, I think it is. To celebrate, we can all go to the technology convention at the pavilion tonight! Since you won today, and your headed to college tomorrow! Won't that be fun?" she said excitedly. I groaned inwardly. Not

Again with the stupid nerdy conventions. And I'd totally forgotten that I'm leaving for college tomorrow! "Sure, mom." I said non-enthusiastically. I knew better to disagree, she would just insist on my 'reward' for good work at chess. Yay. Sometimes I wish I had a normal family.
