16 || LEVIATHAN

18:58, 30 July 2023

Vanessa was always a big believer in conspiracy theories. From mermaids to Bigfoot, even the Loch Ness monster, she believed in it all. But when it came to doppelgängers, well she never truly believed in those.

The idea of seeing someone who looked exactly like you, for some reason, just seemed ridiculous to Vanessa, even more so that giant primates living in the woods or half fish half humans living in the ocean. That was until she stood directly facing the Leviathan version of herself and it made her think that maybe doppelgängers weren't all that unbelievable.

But before we get to that, let's rewind back to how it came to be that Vanessa found herself confronting her evil twin.

It all started when a certain someone, whose name rhymes with bean, decided he wasn't going to get rid of all of his old aliases like Vanessa had told them to. Which resulted in the Leviathan most commonly know as Chet, finding the Winchesters brothers after their witch case in Indiana.

"Dean Winchester you are the bane of my existence." Vanessa groaned out, throwing her half eaten wagon wheel at said man. A waste really, but she was angry.

"Ow! What was that for?" Dean exclaimed, offended as he rubbed his forehead, a smudge of chocolate ending up on his thumb which he licked off. "Mmm, nice." He hummed to himself in satisfaction before remembering he was offended, the look his face quickly returning to what it had been a few seconds prior.

"You didn't get rid of all your old aliases did you?" Vanessa folded her arms, her foot tapping on the floor as she glared at Dean. Now she knew how her dad felt all those years ago when she disobeyed him.

"Of course I did." Dean scoffed out, his voice may have been convincing but the sheepish look on his face was not.

"Really? So there isn't a head in that box?" Vanessa gestured to the box in Sam's hands. Sam who was currently staying out of this conversation least he end up with a Wagon Wheel thrown at him too.

"...No." Dean said hesitantly, his lips pursing as he scratched nervously at the back of his head.

"Oh really?" Vanessa took a step forward, her hands going to her hips as she looked up at Dean, who despite being smaller than Sam was still taller than her. "Open it then."

"I don't want to." Dean said quietly, practically feeling the anger radiate off Vanessa. You know for such a small person she sure had a temper... Must be the Irish in her.

"Figures." Vanessa mumbled, getting one last good glare in at Dean before she moved away from him, making him sigh deeply in relief. "Why did you bring it here anyway?"

"Didn't it say on your Leviathan board to bring the heads home with us?" Dean replied, knowing he was caught out and watching as she turned back to look at him, a little less angrily than she had a second ago.

"It does not say that."

"I did not read it." Dean confessed, making Vanessa roll her eyes as she watched Sam set the box on the table, still feeling too scared of Vanessa to say anything but he figured he had to.

"It was my idea to bring the head back with us." Sam spoke up, earning Vanessa's attention as her eyes softened just a little as she looked at him. "We weren't sure whether this was Chet or not."

"I made you a sketch." Vanessa mumbled, feeling a little annoyed that Dean had been so keen on learning about his future yet he hadn't bothered to even read the board she spent hours writing for them in order to help with the present.

"I know you did, but we just wanted to make sure." Sam said softly, cupping Vanessa's face with one hand as she seemingly pouted a little.

"Fine." She sighed, Sam's touch making her feel a little better. "Open it and let me see."

Sam's hand dropped as he went and reluctantly opened the box. The head inside sitting in a pool of black goo, something Vanessa had actually forgotten to tell them about which came as quite a shock to the brothers when they cut off Chet's head.

"It's him." Vanessa sighed, turning on her heels to head back into the library, where she crossed Chet's name off the section on her board about known Leviathans. His being the only name they'd scored off as the rest of them still lived and were doing God knows what to the world.

"Is killing him a good thing for us or...?" Dean asked hesitantly as he stepped up into the library after her, hoping he hadn't messed anything up by killing Chet immediately.

"Other than it being one less Leviathan to worry about, no, not really. Chet didn't have much of a role in Dick's plan other than tracking you." Vanessa breathed out, leaning back against the table as she pinched the bridge of her nose. "And given that he was, it means it's very likely that they gathered your DNA and are in the process of cloning you. So congratulations Dean, you played yourself."

"Look, I'm sorry, okay." Dean said sincerely, feeling regret for not doing what Vanessa told him when she was literally doing everything she could to make their lives easier. "I feel like an idiot for not having given up all our alias and I will take full responsibility for whatever comes of it."

"You should." Vanessa said a little too harshly, but it was justified given that he'd ruined everything she'd tried her hardest to stop. "Because if they've copied you, then they know every little detail about your life. Which means they know about me. And if they know about me then they know that I know how to stop them." Her eyebrows knitted together as she tried to make sense of her own words.

As did Dean's, and frankly she'd lost him.

"But you have Crowley's demons watching the towns the Leviathan versions us hit, don't you?" Sam asked, gaining Vanessa's attention as he had followed along with her words.

"Yeah but assuming they know that as well, they could end just hitting random towns with no connection to you two." She let out an exasperated sigh, running her hand down her face and wishing she'd been pulled into a different season of supernatural as it would have probably been easier dealing with Lilith or Metatron or even Amara.

"So what now?" Dean asked, folding his arms as he actually took a second to look over Vanessa's Leviathan board, where he noticed he 'put head in box - dump in ocean' circled in red in the top corner. Now he remembered seeing that before... His bad.

"Haven't a baldy notion." Vanessa replied and noticing the confusion on their faces, to which she rolled her eyes before translating. "It means I don't know."

"Gotcha." Sam said quietly around a soft chuckle, still getting used to what they called Vanessa language, which was actually just Irish slang to most normal people.

"Hey, where's Cas?" Dean hadn't noticed the lack of the angels presence when they first returned home, he was too busy getting scolded by Vanessa. But now as he looked around, he realised said angel was missing.

"Iran." Vanessa replied casually, as if it would make sense the the guys. Spoiler alert, it didn't.

"Oh, naturally." Dean said a little sarcastically as he sank down in a seat at the table, shuffling some papers into a pile so he could put his feet on the table.

"I sent him there to see if Dick Roman is looking for the Leviathan tablet." Vanessa explained, gesturing to the current demon tablet that lay on the desk, Balthazar having given it back to her after he and Crowley essentially grounded her the other day.

"I thought you didn't need that tablet because you already knew everything?" Sam both stated and asked, joining Dean in sitting down, only he didn't put his dirty boots on the table.

"I don't but it's more to get a general... timeline, I guess, on where the Leviathans are currently at in operation take over America." Vanessa exhaled, the stress of everything getting to her more now that the lingering worry of Dick Roman knowing all about her built inside.

Sam just nodded, not wanting to ask anymore questions as he could tell Vanessa didn't want to answer them. So, instead he looked around at the papers scattered around on the desk, and there was one on particular that caught his eyes. Mainly because it wasn't written on pastel green paper, instead it was old parchment.

"Is this a tracking spell?" Sam asked, holding up the parchment as Vanessa glanced over her shoulder.

"Yeah, for Asmodeus." She replied, sounding a little fed up. She hadn't told the brothers about her little visit to Cain aka a Knight of Hell, and she wasn't feeling up to hearing them badger her about it being dangerous.

"Where'd you find it?" Sam scoffed out a little, he and Dean had barely been gone a week and she'd managed to find something she'd been looking for pretty much ever since she got to their world.

"Crowley found it." Vanessa lied, turning to them to grab her jacket from the back of one of the chairs and slipping her arms into it. "I'm gonna pop to the shop, back in a bit."

"Want us to come with?" Sam asked, sitting up a little as he dropped the spell back on the table.

"No, it's fine." She replied, wanting to make the quick trip into town by herself so she could clear her head. "I won't be long."

With that, Vanessa headed down the library steps, the gentle tap of her feet going up the metal stairs followed behind and soon enough the loud creak of the bunker door echoed throughout the building before it slammed shut.

"You think she's okay?" Sam asked worryingly towards Dean, who unknown to him was about to ask Sam the same question.

"I don't know, man." Dean sighed, removing his legs from the table top to sit up properly. "I think she's putting too much pressure on herself. I mean, between this whole future thing and Leviathan thing and the prophet thing... And the helping us with cases... Running what's basically a base of operations for other hunters... Oh and not to mention the archangel playing Freddy Krueger in her dreams."

"Well when you put it like that." Sam sighed out, running a hand through his hair while he took in everything Dean had said. And that wasn't even all Vanessa was doing, that was just the tip of the iceberg.

Vanessa's role in the supernatural world had grown exponentially since they arrived in the Men of Letters bunker. She'd basically resurrected the dead society all by herself.

Not only had she been trying to remember everything about the boys lives, past, present and future... Or trying to find Asmodeus and save Gabriel. But she'd also, sort of, taken over the role of Bobby while he was on Leviathan watch. Which meant she had become a go to for hunters all across America when they needed lore or a ways of killing some evil son of a bitch.

If she wasn't careful, she was going to work herself to death and there would be nothing Sam, Dean, Castiel, nor her demonic and celestial dads could do to stop it. Well, short of locking her in the dungeon, but that was a last resort.

At least now Vanessa was actually getting out of the bunker for some fresh air, something that would probably do her a world of good. Only, little did they know that Vanessa leaving the bunker was exactly what the Leviathans had been hoping for.

The walk to the nearest shop was about ten minutes, seven for Vanessa who was a fast walker. It was late afternoon, cloudy with nothing but a gentle breeze in the air as she made the short trip into town.

Knowing that the Leviathans probably knew everything about Vanessa, more than they would have learned from being nestled inside Castiel, made her feel somewhat defeated. Like everything she'd done up to this point had been for nothing. I mean sure, she'd saved Rufus and stopped Chuck ruining Kevin's life by making him a prophet, but still... It felt like a loss.

Vanessa entered the shop, the gentle ding of the bell made the usual owner look up from behind the counter, his eyes seemingly widening when he saw it was her. But Vanessa hadn't noticed, instead she beelined for crisp section, or chips for the Americans. At least hot and spicy Doritos where something she could get herself without needing the help of someone with wings.

As she was browsing the selection of crisps, trying to see if there was anything she wanted to try, you know, broadened her horizons a little from Tayto cheese and onion, she felt something, or rather someone, touch her hand.

"Do you mind..." Vanessa's words faded as she turned, seeing who had once been the shop owner that she'd spotted briefly out of the corner of her eye had now morphed into none other than herself. "Oh, shite..."

"Wow, there's a lot going on up here." Leviathan!Vanessa muttered, running her hand across her chin as she looked up, clearly indicating that she meant inside her head. "Alternate world, eh? Fascinating."

"Oh yeah, it's thrilling." Vanessa said sarcastically as she backed away a little, knocking some stuff of the shelves. "So, which one are you? Alvin, Simon or Theodore?"

"Well before I became the owner of this disgusting little place, before I became you, they called me Valente." Valente replied, watching the realisation onthe real Vanessa's face as she recalled who exactly he had been.

"You were the FBI agent weren't you?" She asked, vaguely remembering the blonde agent assigned to the case on the Leviathan Winchesters, obviously placed inside the bureau to see if the killing spree would flush the real Winchesters out of hiding, which it did.

"I was, that was until Mr Roman decided not to follow through with his original plan... Thats how I got promoted." Valente grinned, a way too sinister looking one for Vanessa's liking, especially when he was wearing her face.

"And the new plan?" She asked hesitantly, even though she had a slight inkling of what that might entail.

"Well, we could have put Sam and Dean on the FBI's most wanted list, you know, for kicks... But Mr Roman decided he was much more fascinated in you... future girl." Valente pointed towards her, edging his way closer as Vanessa retreated.

Given that he hadn't immediately tried to kill her, or worse, eat her... Vanessa assumed that perhaps Dick Roman wanted her alive, that perhaps she was one of those special people that couldn't be cloned, like Charlie. Which would make sense given she was housing archangel grace inside her and was a prophet of the lord.

"I'm flattered, truly, but I'm afraid I'm taken so you can tell your boss to jog on." Vanessa said bitterly, motioning with her thumb which just made Valente laugh a little.

"Oh, he doesn't want you... No, instead I'm here to take over your pathetic little life. And trust me when I say, I'm gonna enjoy eating you." Valente grinned, making Vanessa scrunch up her nose a little as she backed up again, knocking into a shelf.

"Easy there, Hannibal. I think you're missing some key points as to who exactly I am." She chuckled nervously, feeling around behind her for something she could use as a weapon, but there was nothing. Why oh why did she have to be in the bread and crisp aisle.

Valente just inched closer, not saying a word as he began licking his lips in a way that made Vanessa feel incredibly uncomfortable, more so over the fact that she was literally looking at her double. She felt like she was in that one Scooby Doo movie with the evil Shaggy who lived in the mirror.

"Why don't you make this easier for both of us and just play along, huh? Having my meals fight back always gives me indigestion." Valente hissed out, his head tilting back and his face morphing into the giant Leviathan mouth Vanessa had yet to see in real life. The giant teeth and the long tongue that flailed in the air made Vanessa want to gag a little, honestly.

"Hate to break it to you... Venom, but you aren't eating me." Vanessa gulped, still feeling the nerves build inside her as she grabbed a loaf of bread and threw it at the Leviathan her, which obviously did nothing but confuse them. But hey, at least it made its face return to normal.

And it was something, so feeling like a complete idiot Vanessa kept throwing loaves of bread and packets of crisps at the Leviathan version of herself, all while she backed up out of the now empty bread aisle and ran towards the cleaning products.

"Borax, borax..." Vanessa muttered to herself, quickly scanning the shelf for anything that might contain borax. "Aha, you'll do." She whispered in triumph, grabbing a bottle of kitchen cleaner from the lower shelf and unscrewing the lid.

Just in time too as when Vanessa turned around, she was inches away from being eaten by herself. But instead she swung her hand forward, sending a splash of chemicals towards the Leviathan.

Valente soon began hissing and crying out in pain as the borax burned his flesh, filling the air with a rather stomach churning smell. The sizzle of the borax touching his skin sent a shiver down Vanessa's spine and she soon found herself at a standstill of what to do next.

She didn't have anything on her that could decapitate someone, nor did she even know if she could decapitate someone, Leviathan or not.

"Ah! What the hell is this stuff?" Valente groaned, holding his face as the chemicals practically burned it away.

Vanessa didn't reply, instead she kept splashing him, grabbing a second bottle as she began to make her way down the aisle and towards the door. Honestly she was incredibly surprised that no one else had come in.

"Balthazar, please get your feathered ass down here! And bring a machete!" Vanessa shouted, watching as Valente fell to his knees, crying out in pain.

"What on earth do you need a machete for?" Balthazar's signature accent followed the swoosh of his wings as he appeared behind her and soon enough he noticed what the answer to that question was. "Oh, deary me, that is rather unfortunate."

"You don't say." Vanessa exhaled, feeling a little relieved at having some company, but at the same time she was worried as Leviathans could kill angels... But she didn't know who else to call as she hadn't brought her phone with her to call Crowley. "A little help, please?"

"Right, of course." Balthazar vanished, reappearing behind Valente and in one quick swing, what had once been Vanessa's doppelgänger, was now in two pieces.

"Talk about looking in a funhouse mirror." Vanessa mumbled, the relief taking over as she dropped the half empty bottle of kitchen cleaner on the ground. "Thank you."

"You're welcome." Balthazar replied, titling the now black goo covered blade in front of him. "Exactly what just happened here? And where are your moose and squirrel?"

Vanessa did what she called the Castiel head tilt at the all too familiar nicknames for Sam and Dean. Nicknames that where most commonly used by a certain red eyed demon.

"What?" Balthazar asked, watching as Vanessa just chuckled and shook her head.

"You've been spending too much time with Crowley." She exhaled, wiping her hands on her jeans before looking around for a box to put her own head in. God that was weird thought.

"Do you care to explain what happened?" Balthazar asked again as Vanessa emptied a box and picked up her Leviathan head by the hair. Honestly to her she felt like Aro in Twilight when he held up Carlisle's head... She'd never forget that moment, even if it had only been a vision.

"I will, but once we're back at the bunker... So I don't have to tell the story more than once." Vanessa replied, setting the head in the box and closing it. A huge shiver ran down her spine, making her shudder at the fact that it was still her own face she had been looking at.

"Fair enough." Balthazar said, tilting his head in agreement.

"Check my- his- it's pockets, will you? See if there's a phone." Vanessa gestured towards herself as she also went to grab the bags of Doritos she'd actually come to the store for.

Having collected Valente's phone and with the head now safely in a box, Balthazar and Vanessa headed back to the bunker... Flying of course as the ten minute walk didn't seem all that fun now that she was carrying a head in a box.

"Ness?" Sam said as the two of them appeared in the bunker, scaring the crap out of Dean who almost fell out of his chair as he'd been leaning back on it. "What's going on?"

"I just found myself in a Jordan Peele movie." Vanessa replied, dumping the box that now leaked black goo onto the empty table, along with her Doritos.

"In a what?" Sam asked confused, until Vanessa brushed him and her reference off before she began to explain everything. From her doppelgänger to Dick Roman's plan to take over her life, which Sam and Dean being Sam and Dean, they made her dunk her hand in a glass of borax to make sure she was really herself.

"Things are going really different now, and honestly I'm a little lost as to what to do next." Vanessa confessed, accepting the towel Sam handed her to dry her borax covered hands.

"Well, at least now we know that Dick Roman has been taken over." Sam pointed out, something Vanessa didn't even seem to take into account given the situation.

"That's true." She replied, tossing the towel over the box with her head in it.

"So now all we need to do if track him down and send his ass back to Purgatory." Dean added, feeling a wave of adrenaline as he stood up, as if he was about to head out now and do a door to door search for Dick... The Leviathan obviously, get your mind out of the gutter.

"Hang on, isn't Crowley watching Roman as we speak?" Balthazar asked, stepping forward to join the conversation more.

"He should be, yeah. If not him then his demons." Vanessa replied, nodding her head a little.

"Great, then let's grab this bone of a righteous mortal and go stab him." Dean said eagerly, a little too eagerly.

"Easy there, Loki, we can't just bust in through the front door and stab him." Vanessa said, holding her hand out in front of her as if stopping him. "We need a plan, one that doesn't end with one of us, or all of us ending up in Purgatory with him."

And so, with the new information about Dick Roman lifting their spirits, those in the room, minus Balthazar who swiftly left at the mention of research, got to work on their plan at taking down the Leviathans once and for all.

- okay... wow, this chapter was not at all what I had been planning on making it... actually I had a whole different beginning that involved Dean telling Vanessa off for going to visit Cain without telling them... but we might see that in another chapter when they find out the truth on where she got the tracking spell

but anyways... I hope you liked this chapter and i'm sorry for the wait between chapters... I hadn't really planned this part of the fic but hopefully now that i have some direction on where Vanessa's path is going, it might make updating a little easier!

i hadn't planned to have the leviathans copy anyone in this fic but i figured there's been a severe lack of them in it, given that they're the main part of the story and all there's been is a brief mention of edgar... so yeah, i thought having vanessa confront herself would be fun!

also i can't help but feel like these newest chapters, ie, this one and the last two haven't been as good at the first half of the book so if that's the case then I apologise...

did anyone spot the second bobs burgers reference in this story? points to you if you did, and bonus points if you know what episode it's from ;) okay i've rambled enough... I'll see you when I see you, bye!
