Caleb and I were relaxing on our couch when we got the message from our friend, Peter, about a party at his neighbor's house, full of all sorts of drinks and fun for anyone to enjoy. Almost like a college party from his description. We were hesitant about it, but Caleb convinced me that it could be fun, and we weren't doing anything the whole weekend. We left the house in our best party clothes and we took off to the address Peter sent. Caleb seemed excited while we were reaching the main street where the house is, almost jumping out of the car after we parked. He held my hand while we walked inside the busy house, almost getting pushed by everyone that were doing their own thing in the middle of the walkway. The music was loud, playing the latest popular rap song, and everyone was already drunk this early in the night. I saw Peter standing on the counter across the room, dancing like a stripper while he drank a bottle of beer.
"Hey! Caleb! Melody!" Peter saw us from the counter, waving his arm around. He jumped off the counter, rushing past people to reach us, and handed us a bottle of beer each. "This party is pretty fucking sweet! And it just started!" He was yelling loudly since the music was just about the only thing we could hear.
"Dude, what drugs are you on?!" Caleb yelled, trying to be heard at least. He looked at the beer bottle, shrugged, and drank it.
"I don't know, but I feel amazing!" Peter practically bounced himself back to the counter, grabbing another bottle and drinking more alcohol he definitely doesn't need. I watched Caleb finish the last drop of beer in the bottle he was just given, unsure if we should get drunk in the first place from the looks of everyone's behavior. I pressed my lips, handed a random person the beer, and just about rushed myself to the backyard to get away from the crowd.
The air outside somehow felt colder and fresher in the backyard, making me cough at the sudden clean oxygen. Many people were making out on the couches, some girls flirting with guys, and others passed out on the ground. I rolled my eyes at the sight, finding a spot opened on a couch that wasn't covered in people sucking on each other's faces. I should have just stayed home since parties weren't really my thing, but I wanted to be around for Caleb just in case.
I spent the whole time outside in the backyard on my phone while everyone had fun. Everyone was screaming, laughing, making out, and drinking so much alcohol; not even an alcoholic could last. My phone battery signaled it hit 20%, making me sigh in defeat since it was only 1 in the morning and I didn't bring my charger. I stood up, stretching since I've been sitting for a while, and walked through the slightly dimmed party to search for Caleb. I looked through the kitchen, but he wasn't there. Living room, he wasn't there. I noticed Peter was on the couch, making out with a girl while she dry humps him.
"Peter!" I smacked the couch cushion next to him to catch his attention.
"What?" He groaned, looking at me with his eyes so red, they could be cherries.
"Where's Caleb?" I asked, trying to keep my view away from the girl trying to strip off Peter's clothes. Peter pointed towards the stairs and went back to the also drunk girl on his lap. I rolled my eyes slightly, walking away as fast as I could, and went straight up the steps to the second floor. It was slightly clear through the hallway, with only a few people passed out on the floor, and the bedroom doors were slightly open. I opened one room, but he wasn't in there. The next, the same answer. When I reached the bathroom, realizing I also needed to pee, I opened the door to see another pair of people making out. Before I turned away to get out of the room, I noticed the familiar baggy jeans and black sneakers were only shown due to the other person being on top of them. "Caleb?!" I screamed from shock. Both of them flinched, looking at me like they were looking at a ghost.
"M-Melody?" Caleb stuttered. His realization when he went back and forth from looking at me and the girl on top of him made him push her off instantly, and he rushed towards me. I kept my distance from him, unable to fully process what I had seen, and watched him trying to explain himself. "Mel, I swear I thought she was you-" I slapped him hard across the face, making sure he was shut down before explaining. I didn't want to hear it at all. My chest started to burn, heart breaking into pieces. I rushed out of the bathroom, down the stairs, and outside to the front lawn, trying to catch my breath. "Melody! Please, let me explain!" Caleb yelled as he chased me. I didn't bother to acknowledge him, going straight to the car and getting inside with the doors locked so he couldn't get in as well. Caleb was banging on the door, trying to get it open. Caleb kept yelling out my name, begging me to open the car for him, but I drove off without hesitation. I had nowhere else to go. If I had gone home, Caleb would have found me easily. So the only place I could think of when my head was spinning was my best friend's house.
Sienna and I have been friends since school, knowing well enough about Caleb and my relationship since we first started dating. She was the first I told about our first kiss, our first date. Everything.. And when I told her what happened at the party, she didn't hesitate to let me stay the night. I felt like a void after I saw him kissing another woman. An empty vessel just floating through space.. Breathing started to feel like a chore; my heartbeat was hardly beating at all. I could hear the sounds of people talking, but my mind was blocking out everything, only replaying the painful memory..
I suddenly woke up in a cold sweat, sitting up quickly to catch my breath. "A.. dream..?" I muttered. I looked at my hands, noticing the bandaid wrapped around my thumb that I remember Caleb putting on me after I accidentally got a paper cut. If I were at a party earlier with Caleb, I would have remembered to change the bandage before leaving.
"Melody..? Are you alright?" Caleb sat up, half asleep.
"Yeah... Just a nightmare..."
