Chapter 22

20:31, 3 August 2017

Colby quickly shoved his leather jacket into his bag as he messed up his fringe in the way Sam liked it. A deep breath and a quick walk later Colby was behind the school. All day his thoughts were focused on the texts and Sam who didn't even go to school. Colby was broken down and angry, more so at himself for so easily falling back into his well worn mask. What Colby didn't expect was to see small Macy Reynolds walking around a sad smile on her lips,

"Before you say anything Colby hear me out. You are still the new kid, you need to know some things." Macy spoke lightly, her eyes trained on the ground instead of Colby. Colby bit his lip as he only nodded an okay, figuring the girl needed a chance to talk before he punched her in the face. It was only fair,

"I was made to do this by Matt Rangers. The thing you will never know is that Matt Rangers rules the whole school. He has control for he may be dumb but my god he is evil. He practically blackmailed me, I don't know what he has against you and Sam but-" Colby raised his hand to silence Macy. He heard enough and surprisingly didn't blame her for it, "So Matt threatened you with his fists, I understand. But you know Sam's name. You knew he existed. You knew that he gets targeted by Matt don't you??" Macy shook her head yes, her stomach relieved of her never ending guilt,

"Then why didn't you help him. I see how the school treats the kid, an outsider. Can you tell me why? I don't get it. He is one of the sweetest guys I have ever met. He glows, I just, how does no one see him? It tears him up, he is far too broken. I know what it is like to be broken, believe me. But Sam is- his broken takes years to fix. My broken was fixed because of him." Colby's voice cracked as he looked up at the small girl in front of him as Macy shrugged her shoulders,

"Kansas is a small place to live, everyone knows everyone. We all grew up together, Matt always leading with his brawn's instead of his brains. Sam was always smaller than everyone else and too kind, I guess he was an easy target for Matt. Everyone else was too afraid to step in. There's a lot you probably don't understand new kid and that's okay. It doesn't matter, I have a plan."

Colby nodded as he listened to her plan. It wasn't anything much just get Sam to sit down and listen to Macy. It was simple but Colby didn't think it would work. Sam hated him and well he knew Sam was jealous of Macy from the day at the lockers. He didn't think either of them could get Sam to come out and just listen to them,

"I know what you're thinking Colby but it isn't going to be us to talk to him first, but someone he trusts immensely. You got to know someone who will hear us out and get us to talk to him." Colby nodded thinking who would the shadow trust if he never had any true friends,

"His mother. Sam loves her and I think she could persuade him." Colby announced hoping Ms. Golbach would look past the fact he broke her son's heart and listen to him. He didn't tell Macy of his concerns, instead he let her squeal with excitement,

"This is great!! All we need to do is fix this. Tonight. We can't have Rangers think he won two days in a row can we? Plus Blue Valley needs its favorite couple back." Colby stared wide eyes at the now bubbling girl, "Favorite couple?" He squeaked remembering the day with the hideous language and running away from the disgusted eyes,

"Like I said new kid, there are a lot of things you don't know. The whole school was rooting for you. We wanted Sam to be happy, we just hid it to please Matt and the rest of his goons. You made us believe in soulmates." Macy gushed as Colby let out a small chuckle, "Soul mates eh?" Macy only nodded, the pair already walking towards Sam's house, hoping Ms. Golbach would be willing to listen.

Ms. Golbach was typing away on her lap top, her son upstairs asleep after crying his heart out. the mother's own heart was broken after seeing her son so distraught. A mother's worst fear came true, her son was upset and she couldn't fix it and make the pain go away. It reminded her so much of the troubles she went through when her husband left her, she loved the man and her other children. She was his soulmate, she knew it. But must like her son she knew some people were born with two soulmates and broke their first ones heart. Sam's mother knew her son would carry the same fate as her, it was a cliche that was bound to happen, and of course it happened twice as fast. Her thoughts unfocused and her heart in pieces she almost missed the faint knock on the front door, "Coming!" She called as she walked quickly over. She opened the door to see the one boy who broke her son's heart and girl she had never seen before,

"Can I help you with something?" Colby nodded as the girl seemed to nudge him in the shoulder to talk, "Ms. Golbach I know I am probably the last person you want to see but we need to talk. It's about Sam and I. I didn't mean to hurt him I swear, it was a misunderstanding. Please, can we just come in and talk to you. At least hear us out?" The mother didn't know what to think. On one hand she didn't want to look the boy in the face because all she could see was her son's tear filled eyes. On the other she knew everyone deserved a chance to talk so she swallowed her motherly pride and nodded stepping aside,

"Fine. Come in."

A/N: I hope this is okay. My back really hurts and just I am not entirely focused today. Just as an aside I will have no internet for the next three days to a family vacation, so no updates for a while. Sorry, but guys this book is almost done, can you believe it?! Question: What do you think the last line of this book will be? I'm curious of what you guys think! ~Nightmare
