Chapter 32

"No." I stated.

"Excuse me?" Danzo asked.

"I won't fight him. Danzo, you KNOW the reason I joined root.And it wasn't to take an innocent life." I said with a steel voice.

We had an intense staredown for a couple of seconds before Danzo sighed.

"I will make you a deal. No exam, but you leave today. Use the skills i've taught you to fulfill your purpose. Go live your life as if I had never interrupted it. Take revenge for your family and friends. 

But in the event that I call upon you, you will answer to my call. No matter the time or place."

I nodded. "Deal."

"Your word?" He asked.

"You have my word. What about Daitaro?" I asked.

"He will stay here, and perform his duties. I will announce him the winner of this match and he will continue on in the root. Everyone else will think of you as dead."

"Maybe he can help me with my quest. We work much better together anyways. Could you say that we refused to fight eachother, and you took both our lives? It's a believable story. More believable than Daitaro killing me so that he could pass the exam."

He thought about it for a moment.

"...Fine. I suppose I could make an example out of you two."

"Thank you so much, Danzo." I said.

"There's a trapdoor over there." He said, pointing to a place behind me.

"It leads to and open area. Get out of my sight before I change my mind." He said strictly. I nodded vigorously before grabbing Dai's arm. 

"C'mon Dai!'

"I.. am so confused. What just happened?" He asked me.

"Don't worry about it, explain to ya later!"

I smiled.

Everything worked out perfectly.

I was now more trained than i ever was.

I had Daitaro by my side, to help me conquer my enemies.

To help me take revenge for my family.

I lead my confused partner through a series of trapdoors, before we made it to the last one.

Just like Danzo said.

"This is It Dai, you ready?"

It had been 2 years since i'd seen the sun.

Since I'd felt rain on my skin.

No, actually. The few times We were sent out on missions, it was raining. 

It still would feel good though.

Not to be told what to do anymore, to have my own agenda.

"What are you waiting for?" Daitaro asked me.

"Huh?" I asked, confused.

Then I realized that i was just sitting in front of the last trapdoor, smiling to myself.

"Oh, oh right!" I said.

He unhooked  the latch, and pulled open the door.

Fresh warm air hit against my face and the sun's familiar glows forced me to squint my eyes.

It took a while for my eyes to adjust, but when they did, i realized that we were surrounded by trees.

'I forgot how beautiful the trees look in broad daylight." I said, appreciating the nature surrounding me.

"And i will never forget how beautiful YOU are in broad daylight." Daitaro said, staring at me.

I blushed and looked at the green grass.

"No more root." He said.

"I know."

"Maki Hatake, Will you..." 

He got down on one knee.

"Oh god, Dai, what are you doing?" I asked, cracking up.

He gifted me with a crooked smile.

"Will you buy me a bag of potato chips? The last time i had potato chips was my last night in my own home."

I rolled my eyes and smacked his forehead.

"Stupid Dai." I muttered.

He laughed. "I'm just kidding! Although i really would like some potato chips..."

I shot him a playful glare.

"Alright, alright! Maki, will you be my girlfriend?"

I smiled. "Aw, dai. Of course not!" 

He smiled widely "YA- What?" His smile faltered.

I burst into laughter at his confused expression.

"I'm sorry Dai, I had to. Of course, I will."

"Huh?" He asked, still confused.

"Yes. Yes I will be your girlfriend." I said, planting a kiss on his cheek.

I took hold of Dai's hand and smiled.

I started down this path by myself. 

And i'm glad that  i'm not ending it by myself.

It's been forever since i've been free to feel the sun. Free to feel the wind brush softly against my skin. Free to feel the soft, plush grass underneath my bare feet. 

Free to make my own decisions.

I've learned from my mistakes.

Trust me, I have.

I've looked life right in the eye

I've stared death straight in the face

more times than i can count.

I've learned the value of life.

And I won't take advantage of it anymore.
