Chapter 31.

*2 years later

My eyes shot open instantly. 4:30 am, the clock read. My body was so accustomed to waking up at 4:30 after 3 months in the root, that i no longer needed Dai's assistance to wake up. Although i did eventually find out where he got most of his mysterious facial bruises from..

"Up Dai?" I asked, changing into my training clothes.

"Yep!" He said, out of his bed  and into his training clothes as well.

Yeah, there was no such thing as privacy when it came to your partner.

"Let's get breakfast, I'm starved." I said.

"Yeah, one more thing, though." He said, grabbing my arm and twisting me around.

He planted a short, sweet kiss on my lips and smiled.

"Now i'm ready to go." He said in a happy daze.

*pause moment* Maybe I should explain.

Over the past two years, Daitaro and I have gotten really close. We aren't official, more of a partners with benefits situation. But we're both very aware of our feelings for eachother.

Yes. I've been in the root for two years. After the initial first year of training, Osamu-senpai would give us missions to carry out. And we carried them out successfully. We worked perfectly in sync.

We're supposed to graduate early, senpai said. Our skills were magnificent and there wasn't much more we needed to work on, according to the 'higher ups'.

Our 'relationship' can't be known. I'm sure you could guess why.

It started 2 months into our training. 

Unexpectedly.

*flashback

"Hurry up you morons. Last one to the finish line has to spar me before training ends!" Osamu senpai shouted. 

Dai and I were breathing heavily, sprinting our last lap to the finish line.

God know how long we had been running for.

No way was I sparring Senpai! I shot Dai a glance, and we sprinted for the finish line, as hard as we could.

He was getting ahead of me.

That didn't exactly surprise me. I had incredible speed from previous training, but Dai had worked so hard in the past 2 months, that he had started to match my speed.

I gave it my all the last 50 meters.

25 meters left. And Dai was still ahead of me.

15 meters.

Suddenly, Daitaro slowed down, and I boosted ahead of him, finishing first.

"Alright, moron. You ready to spar?" Senpai said to poor Daitaro, who was breathing rapidly.

*2 hours later. 

"Dai, i know you let me win on purpose." I said, handing him a bag of ice for his eye.

"Well, I couldn't let Senpai ruin that pretty face of yours." He chuckled.

"Yes, i'm quite the damsel in distress, aren't i?" I asked, sarcastically.

"And I'm your prince in shining armor." He said.

"Isn't it a knight that's in shining armor?" I asked confused.

"Yeah, but i'm more of a prince." He said.

I laughed. "Oh how can i ever repay thee, my prince?"

"Hmm, how about.. a kiss from thine sweet lips?"

"Wait. Seriously?" I asked, awkwardly.

He shrugged."If you want to repay me."

"Welll... I don't like being in debt." I said, smiling.

"Okay."

"Okay."

I rolled my eyes and pressed my lips to his, swiftly.

"Oh come on, that's it?" He asked, giving me the puppy dog face.

"Really? You're using that on me?" I asked, trying not to give in.

His face remained the same.

"Fiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiine." I said, kissing him again.

This time when I pulled away, though, he held onto me and our lips collided for the third time.

And this time, no one pulled away.

** Present day

"Good news Morons, Your graduation test is today. Meaning, these few moments are my last few moments of being your handler."

"I always knew he loved us." I joked.

Daitaro laughed. "Senpai, you know you'll miss us."

"Not really." He said with a straight face.

"I'm to lead you to the final exam room. Come along."

We followed him into a room above training grounds. 

"Wait here." He said, leaving us.

"So, what do you think the exam will be?" Dai asked me.

I shrugged. "No idea."

A familiar face stepped inside the room.

"Danzo?" I asked, slightly confused.

"Ah, Maki. It's good to see you doing so well."

"You've made it to graduation then. I shall explain now."

I nodded, listening intently.

"First, only one of you will make it out of this room alive."  He said.

"Heh?" I asked.

I don't think i heard him right.

"You will duel eachother. It's a death match. That is the final exam."

What? How can this be?

I thought about it. 

What was more important. My friendship with Daitaro? 

Or accomplishing my goals.

Hunting down the Akatsuki. 

Defeating Orochimaru.

Protecting the ones I love.

But now, Daitaro was apart of that.  I couldn't killi him. I just couldn't.

The voices inside my head started speaking to me.

It's your choice Maki. Your hard work is on the line. You want to pass this test? You must killi him. You must.

"SHUT UP!" I yelled out loud.

I looked Daitaro, and we shared a  meaningful glance. 

Then i turned to Danzo. I looked at the expression on his face.

And I knew what I had to do.
