01:58, 23 November 2020Jun stared at Yerin across the large white conference table. She avoided his gaze by staring at her fingers that were fiddling about in her lap.
Next to her, Jungchan bit his lip nervously.
Jun glanced at the clock on the wall and just wished they would hurry up. The disciplinary meeting that was going to finalize the case was currently going on.
Next to Jun, his mother sat quietly, listening to all the boring legal stuff Jun was ignoring. She could see her son twitching out of the corner of her eye.
"...if you confess, your punishment will be reduced, though the other party can still press charges." Mr. Choi, the school lawyer concluded. "Is that understood?"
Yerin's father looked as if he might throw a tantrum any moment, yet he kept his calm and nodded peacefully, though his eyes were full of resentment as he glared down at the lawyer, then Jun and his mother.
Jungchan's mother sat quietly next to him, still in disbelief of what her precious son was being accused of.
There were five officials, four of them were Principal Kang, her secretary, the detective Mr. Son and then the Ministry of Education official Mr. Kim. The last man was Mr. Choi.
They didn't want a lot of commotion, so they had kept the number of people in the meeting to a minimum.
"I shall now present the result of my investigations," Mr. Son said, after clearing his throat and standing up. "The evidence the Wens provided us with was critically analyzed and a voice comparison test was conducted. This has led me to the conclusion that the accused, Mr. Wen Junhui, is in fact, the victim. The evidence we received and found shows that the video taken was not in fact of Mr. Wen himself, but rather of Mr. Lee Jungchan."
Jun scoffed and muttered, "Glad they figured that out, at least," which caused his mother to kick him. He winced and fell silent.
Flashback
"But my last evidence may be the concluding evidence of them all...my shoes," Jun stated. The four of them exchanged glances.
"Your shoes, Mr. Wen?" Mr. Kim repeated. Jun nodded. He tapped another filed document. It was a picture; a screenshot taken from the video. It was a clear picture showing the full body of the person, except a part of his head was chopped off. Jun pointed at the shoes.
"As much as I would love to own those shoes, I don't," he continued. "Even if I did, I would never wear such flashy shoes to school anyway. And as far as I know...there is only one person in this school that I've ever seen in a pair of those Jordans."
The four adults exchanged surprised glances again. "What are you implying?" Principal Kang said.
"I'm saying," he began. "That I think I know who did this to me."
"And?" she pushed.
"Investigate Lee Jungchan and Park Yerin." Jun told the detective. "When I was leaving the trash dump, I ran into those two, and I specifically remember complimenting Jungchan on his shoes. Those new red Jordans to be precise. There's no way I could forget those – they were the most expensive pair of shoes I'd ever seen anyone wear in this school."
"There was a confession which verified that both Ms. Park and Mr. Lee were at the site of the setting in the video," Mr. Son continued. "and in the video, you can see Mr. Lee wearing the very same red shoes he was wearing that day. I checked and double checked, but no other student in this school owns the same or a similar pair of shoes. Mr. Lee did confess to this, however, Ms. Park did not. That is all."
Mr. Son straightened his tie and took his seat again.
Jun glared at Yerin. He couldn't believe she still hadn't confessed.
"This is outrageous!" Mr. Park, Yerin's father, had finally snapped. "You're telling me that my daughter never confessed to this, yet she is sitting here as the accused because of that crazy boy's statement?"
"Calm down Mr. Park!" Principal Kang said, her voice raised. "I will not have you call my students such names in my office. Now please take a seat! There is enough evidence mounted against your daughter in this case that there is a high chance she will be expelled!"
"Expelled?!" Mr. Park exclaimed, jumping up again. "What do you mean expelled? What has my daughter ever done wrong? Why is she being—"
"Yerin." Jun's sharp voice sliced neatly through Mr. Park's rash words towards the Principal and immediate silence followed.
For the first time since the two of them had been in the room, Yerin looked at him. Her eyes were watery.
"Confess it. Right now." Jun commanded her.
There was continuous silence that to Jun, seemed so loud.
"Say. It." He pressed. "Tell us the truth."
Yerin continued to stare at him silently, a tear watering her cheek.
"Don't lie."
Yerin turned to look at her father. Then said, "I confess. I did it. I convinced Jungchan to do the video and I filmed it. It's all my fault!"
Mr. Park slowly sat down, keeping his eyes on his beloved daughter.
"Mr. Wen, you still have the right to press charges. They will be expelled and dealt with correctly." Mr. Choi said shortly. "Would you like to press charges against Mr. Lee and Ms. Park?"
Jun looked Mr. Park dead in the eye. "No." Jun replied. Yerin began to cry loudly.
"I don't want to ruin someone's life like how they tried to ruin mine," he said, his gaze shifting to Jungchan. "Don't expel them."
Next to him, his mother nodded with a slight smile. "Well, that will be all," she said and stood up. Her son stood next to her. "We'll get going now."
Motherand son bowed, turned and left the room before another word was spoken.
