Chapter 5, cave man

-After a couple weeks of being here I've finally got better at digging. I may still be the slowest digger but not for much longer. I heard there's a new guy arriving after Barf bag got bit by a snake. 

I was right there when it happened, he took off he shoe and then his sock. It was no accident he got bit. 

Anyways, I'm also probably (-and hopefully) going to be a better digger than this new guy, and yes, we do know it's going to be a guy. Mom already told us. 

He was supposed to be arriving in a couple hours after we're done digging, so he misses that. I'm excited to not be the new person anymore because I get enough negative attention from being the only girl here. It really is annoying. 

Don't get me wrong, I'm proud of who I am, but being here doesn't do much for my confidence. I feel like some kind of alien. Someone who's constantly looked at differently. 

The people in tent D aren't as bad as the rest, Zigzag and Zero tend to treat me with more respect and kindness. Tent D in general just looks out for me.

I was coming back from digging and putting my shovel away when I saw Mr. Sir showing around, who I imagine the new guy is. He looked scared and nervous, I almost wanted to go up to him and tell everything was going to be OK. He just had the gentle innocent lamb type of aura.

I waved and heard Mr. Sir say something.

"That's Y/n, she's the only girl here. New here too." was what it sounded like he said. 

I left for the dinner hall since it was almost time to eat.

After stopping at the washroom before, I made it to the Tent D table. Where I had first met everybody a couple weeks back.

Sitting there was everybody, and the new guy.

He was in my spot beside Zigzag but I didn't say anything.

"So what'd you get in here for?" X-ray asked Stanley, the new guy.

I kind of zoned out for most of the dinner and before I knew it, I was in my cot asleep. Dreaming not so happily in the summer Texas heat.

Like I assumed, I wasn't the last person in from digging our holes. Stanley was a much slower digger than anyone could have guessed. 

When he made it to the wreck room he looked sweaty and exhausted. 

I looked away from him for a second and then he broke out into a small fight with Lump, all the tent D guys had to pull lump off Stanley. 

"I'm gonna kill him!" Lump shouted as Zigzag got him off Stanley. 

Eventually, Lump gave  up and all of tent D went to the pool table to talk about the fight, Stanley included. 

"Nobody messes with the cave man, nobody," Magnet stated. I had never heard of cave man so I was pretty confused by this. 

"Did you see the cave man there?" X-ray asked the rhetorical question. 

"Hey, I don't mess with anybody." Stanley said nervously. That's when I finally got it, Stanley was cave man. 

It was time for dinner so I walked beside Zero and Stanley, explaining who cave man was.
