Chapter 6, ambitious feelings

- I wasn't feeling very good today, I knew the reason. I had gotten my period and had some cramps, not extreme ones, but still. I was out in the sun on a summer day digging a hole, already being overworked. When I told Mom, after he gave us water, he said he would tell the Warden and see what he could do. 

He didn't say it as if his concern was genuine or even like it mattered.

I was one of the last people still digging their holes, which was slower than usual. I guess Zigzag noticed because he came up to my hole and offered to help dig my hole.

"I don't know, are you sure it wouldn't be too much work for you?"I wondered.

"It'd be no problem, batty. Are you alright you don't look so good?" he genuinely asked me. I didn't know if I should tell him, you know? Well anyways I might as well tell him about Mom.

"Well, I told Mom about it, he said he'd tell the Warden." I replied. He nodded before asking another question. 

"You sure you're OK?"he stopped digging to look at me with a concerned look.

I was starting to feel light headed and grabbed Zigzag's arm to steady myself. 

"Could you pass me my water please?"I asked with a rushed pace. He grabbed my canister before replying.

"It's empty,"he scanned the hole before grabbing something I couldn't make out "here, drink this." I quickly snatched it out of his hands in a desperate manner before drinking the water inside. I quickly finished.

"Who's is this?"It was a pretty silly question but I still asked it for clarification.

"Oh, uh it's mine." Zigzag said the last part quietly. I felt a little embarrassed but was too grateful to him to say anything that might embarrass him too.

"Thanks." I said breaking the silence. 

Mom's truck pulled up and he called me over. 

"The Warden wants you to see you, so come on over," he explained "and don't worry about the hole."

We stopped in front of a pretty fancy building, considering the tent I sleep in. 

Mom walked up to the door and knocked on it before a beautiful red head lady opened the door. Wait, a women, I wasn't the only girl here.

They greeted each other before Mom explained who I was and the Warden said he could leave.

"Y/n," she said "I heard about your situation. Obviously the state didn't think of this of course. I do have some things here for you though." she pointed to a coffee table with a couple packages of pads and tampons.

"Take whatever you need, and if you need more just come and visit me again." the Warden sounded as if this was a lot of work but still put a fake smile on.

"Thank you." I spoke while picking up some of the packages with my hands.

I gathered all I needed and headed for the door, I couldn't stand this lady.

"You can go to the showers immediately, no one should be out there and they should be ready for you." was the last thing she told me before I left.

I had showered and put on my other, clean, clothes before joining everyone else for dinner. After I got my food, I sat down next to Zigzag. He leaned over subtly, and whispered in my ear.

"You're looking good," I giggled at his words and he realized what he had said "I mean, you're uh, looking better, not that you looked bad but I just mean, you seemed a little sick or tired." 

"Yeah, I also took a shower." I said while smiling and blushing a little. He backed away and looked at my face just only realizing because of my words.

"Well, you do look good." he said while smiling with a light blush.

We both started to laugh and everyone at our table started to stare at us, which did quiet me and Zigzag down.

A/N: I'm moving soon so I want to finish this book before packing becomes stressful and time consuming. I also wanted to say that this chapter isn't one that a lot of people talk about, but periods should definitely be normalized, especially in media; such as this. Hope you're all doing well, stay safe!
