𝐉ust another pretty day. iruka stood in front of the classroom, arms crossed, eyes glinting with evil teacher glee. “today’s exercise is a group project.” groans echoed around the room.

“you’ll be randomly assigned to a team of five. you’ll be given a scenario and have to present your group strategy. including roles, formations, and survival plans.” iruka continued.

naruto quickly threw his hands up. “can i be the leader?!” iruka’s response was immediate, firm but there's a hint of amusement “no.” naruto dramatically falls back.

it wasn't that long when their teacher finally wrote down the group names on the board, yet there's certainly a  group of student that caught the class attention. the team 3, which consists of Nara Shikamaru, Akimichi Choji, Inuzuka Kiba, Aburame Shino,....and Kocho Ameiko.

there was a beat of silence. the whole class keeps looking at the odd group.

kiba blinked. “wait. that’s us!....with kocho-san?” shikamaru groaned, visibly tired already. “tch. group work.” choji, on the other hand, just smiled nervously, looking at the last name in their group. “it’ll be fine… right?” shino adjusted his hood. “unexpected, but not incompatible.” kiba leaned toward him. “bro, did you just say we're not ‘incompatible’?”

ameiko had already stood up. smiling, silent, she walked to their shared table and sat gracefully at the center like she’d been waiting for them the whole time.

and everyone watched her

kiba scratched his head, ashamed for no reason. “you sure you wanna sit with the chaos crew?”

ameiko just gave a soft smile, eyes half-lidded. “chaos can be lovely, when it has rhythm.”

shikamaru stared, confused. “what does that even mean?”  choji offered, “i think it means yes,” while ameiko just gave them a small smile.

the scenario was written in chalk on the board—“your team is stranded in enemy territory. you must escape while protecting an injured comrade. plan your strategy.”

shino leaned in. “who is the injured one?” kiba instantly pointed at shikamaru. “he’s already acting like he’s dying.” shikamaru didn’t even argue. “fine. less work.”

“then I’ll take front line,” kiba said proudly. “me and akamaru can sniff out traps.” shino faced him, while saying “do not forget to include a backup navigator,” shino added calmly. “in case you are taken down.”

kiba, feeling a little offended — shouted at him. “i won’t be taken down—!” choji, cut him off while opening a bag of chips. “can i carry the injured person?” shikamaru glanced at him “you’re the only one who can without dying,” shikamaru muttered.

then, finally, all of them turned to ameiko.

who had been quiet the whole time — listening, hands folded neatly on the table, smiling while head tilted slightly, as if listening to something no one can possibly  hear.

kiba blinked at the sight. “wait, what are you gonna do?”

her eyes glanced at him, smile soft but steady. “i’ll direct.” shikamaru raised a brow. “you think you can lead us?”

“no,” she said calmly. “i think i can help you lead yourselves.”

pause.

          “…that’s weirdly deep,” shikamaru mumbled.

kiba whispered to choji beside him, eyes never leaving the girl. “i thought she’ll just sit still and look pretty” choji nodded, munching some chips in his mouth. “me too, i feel like if she did, we will still get a passing score”

          “both of you, shut it”

          “yes, sir!” both said unison.

they started planning. ameiko made no loud commands. no showy interruptions. she just asked small, quiet questions like—

“what would you do if shino was too far ahead to call back?” voice calm—soft even, not demanding. “i’d use my sense of smell to track him down.” kiba's response was immediate, proud.

ameiko's next question was directed at choji. “how would you signal trouble without speaking?” choji thought for a moment before responding. “i’d use hand signals or body language.”

every time she asked so softly, they paused—answered, and started thinking harder.

shikamaru rubbed the back of his neck, watching the said girl, minding her business as she wrote down everything with her perfect and pretty handwriting—looking peaceful while doing so. “…she’s not loud, but she’s bossy in a polite way.” kiba nodded at shikamaru then muttered, while glancing at her. “i’m kinda into it,” he got three pair of side eyes.

shino simply nodded, not minding. “she listens. then adjusts.” choji, on the other hand, offered her a chip wordlessly. she looked up and accepted, smile remained—making her look serene.

when it was their turn to present, ameiko didn’t take center stage. she let the others speak — choji describing formation, kiba detailing scent paths, shino covering contingencies, and shikamaru with a very convincing acting.

she just stood to the side, sleeves fluttering, smile ever-present. watching. letting them shine.

iruka raised a brow when they finished. “impressive. especially from… this group.”

kiba beamed. “we worked together!” shikamaru sighed. “barely.” choji smiled. “it wasn’t so bad.” shino simply said, “balanced.”

ameiko bowed slightly. “thank you for letting me learn from you.”  her voice lingered like a petal caught in the breeze — soft, and sincere. then she stepped down from the front with quiet feet and flowing sleeves, returning to their shared table at the middle-left corner of the room. she sat down as if nothing had happened — serene, folding her hands neatly once again, her posture graceful and relaxed.

but the class… didn’t look away.

a few students leaned forward in their seats without realizing it. some whispered. others simply watched. ameiko had barely spoken during the entire presentation yet somehow, all eyes followed her now, as if waiting for her next move.

even sasuke glanced. briefly.

          naruto blinked. “why’s everyone staring?”

sakura’s brow furrowed, arms crossed, lips pursed. “because she didn’t do anything… and still made them look good.”

ino tilted her head, chin resting on her palm. “she’s kind of mesmerizing when she moves. it’s unfair.”

hinata, seated quietly behind them, looked down, cheeks faintly pink at admiration.

the room didn’t settle right away, not even after iruka cleared his throat and moved on to the next team’s turn. students returned to their own desks in mismatched groups, but the air hadn’t gone back to normal. not quite.

the classroom wasn’t done for the day. just their team. but it felt like a moment had ended. one that left a strange stillness behind, the kind that makes you sit up straighter without knowing why.

kiba scratched the back of his neck. “she’s weird,” he muttered again, watching the way she opened her notebook without looking up, perfectly calm.

“but the good kind,” choji added, tearing the corner of his chip bag into a neat fold.

shikamaru leaned on his elbow. “troublesome… but smart.”

shino didn’t speak. but his gaze lingered, steady, calculating.

ameiko simply listened as the next team began presenting. her smile remained, a soft, unreadable thing  like she’d already moved on. like she had never needed the spotlight to begin with.

and somehow, by the end of the lesson, the weirdest group in class didn’t feel mismatched anymore.they felt… seen. capable. balanced.

𝐀𝐌𝐄𝐈𝐊𝐎 𝐊𝐎𝐂𝐇𝐎 didn’t lead with volume or presence.she didn’t chase attention. She didn’t command it.

and yet, it followed her anyway.
