the academy courtyard had become a sanctuary during lunch breaks.
it wasn’t large. just a circle of well-worn stone benches, a scattering of garden trees, and a sun-drenched lawn that always smelled faintly of grass and chalk. the faint rustling of leaves played over the low hum of laughter and footsteps. a light breeze made the hanging petals stir like slow-falling snow.
most students were already out.
some had tossed their bento lids aside in a rush to eat, others were throwing rice balls at each other like shuriken. naruto was halfway up a tree trying to rescue his chopsticks from a squirrel, dramatically screaming about sabotage.
and yet again, all heads found themselves drifting toward the farthest bench. the one half-hidden beneath a curtain of wisteria vines, gently swaying.
𝐀𝐌𝐄𝐈𝐊𝐎 𝐊𝐎𝐂𝐇𝐎 sat there quietly.
her haori sleeves were drawn back and clipped with a delicate silver pin, revealing the fitted black shinobi bodysuit beneath. its fabric catching glints of violet where the sun touched it. a butterfly-shaped clasp shimmered near her collarbone, catching the light like dew. her posture was graceful, back straight, legs tucked to the side as if she were a figure painted in an ancient scroll, not a real girl on a bench.
she was eating a small, neat bites from her bento. rice triangles folded in seaweed, tamagoyaki slices cut in careful layers, and two pale purple plums resting like jewels in one corner. even when she sipped miso from her thermos, it looked choreographed like the scene had been rehearsed by the wind and the petals and the silence.
"she eats like she has a soundtrack behind her," kiba muttered, chewing grilled meat too fast. "where’s her background music even coming from?"
"probably summoned," shikamaru replied without lifting his head, sprawled under a tree like a fallen banner. "like… genjutsu orchestra."
shino adjusted his glasses. "it’s like watching a shrine maiden eat lunch.”
naruto, now tangled in a branch, groaned. "it’s been months. why is it still weird?!"
"because she exists," choji replied sagely, licking honey glaze off his fingers. "and existence is terrifying sometimes."
across the courtyard, 𝐈𝐍𝐎 𝐘𝐀𝐌𝐀𝐍𝐀𝐊𝐀 leaned against a sun-warmed stone pillar, her arms crossed. her sky-blue obi ribbon fluttered with the breeze, lips pursed in a sour line.
𝐒𝐀𝐊𝐔𝐑𝐀 𝐇𝐀𝐑𝐔𝐍𝐎 stood beside her, rice halfway to her mouth, chewing like it personally offended her.
"she’s doing it again," ino muttered.
"breathing?" sakura replied flatly.
"being elegant on purpose."
sakura’s eye twitched. "it’s not on purpose. that’s the worst part."
ino’s fingers tightened on her bento strap. "you know what? no. no, no, no. this is ridiculous."
"what are you doing?" sakura asked, lowering her lunch. "i’m going over there." ino declared.
"why?"
"to sit."
"you’re not subtle."
"i’m not trying to be."
sakura grabbed her sleeve. "wait."
ino raised a brow, one hand on her hip. while, sakura huffed. "i’m coming too."
they approached like two soldiers going to war with an enemy they couldn’t see, side by side, stiff with pride, determination and something they didn’t want to name.
as they neared the vine-covered bench, ameiko looked up, not startled, but as if she had sensed their presence a moment before they arrived.
her gaze met theirs without judgment, lavender-grey eyes calm and unblinking. a breeze pulled gently at the wisteria vines above her, and a petal landed in her lap. she didn’t move to brush it away.
she just smiled. small. polite. like water bowing to gravity. she then shifted her thermos slightly, a gesture both offering and unbothered.
sakura cleared her throat. "we’re… sitting here now."
"please do," ameiko replied, folding her hands neatly in her lap.
they sat. it was quiet for exactly six seconds. ino broke first. "you’re popular." ameiko blinked slowly. "i suppose so."
"you’re not even trying."
"i wouldn’t know how to."
sakura narrowed her eyes. "are you faking it?" ameiko tilted her head. "what part?" ino flailed a little. "the floating. the eyes. the aura. you’ve got some kind of... anti-chaos seal."
ameiko’s smile deepened, just slightly—clearly amused. "would you like one?" sakura snorted before she could stop herself.
the air shifted.just a little.just enough.
ino scoffed, arms crossed tighter. "this is still weird."
"you two are loud," ameiko said softly, her gaze gliding between them. "it’s refreshing."
they blinked.
"what’s that supposed to mean?" sakura asked.
"you speak before your feelings are finished forming," ameiko replied, delicately spearing a pickled plum. "it’s honest."
ino stared. "you’re way too poetic."
"so i’ve been told" ameiko murmured, taking a small bite.
from a shaded bench near the opposite side of the courtyard, H𝐈𝐍𝐀𝐓𝐀 𝐇𝐘𝐔𝐆𝐀 watched silently, a closed bento box resting in her lap.
her white eyes followed the trio, fingers clasped together on her knees. she had been sitting alone as usual, content with silence, until she saw them. sakura, ino, and ameiko seated together in an unthinkable triangle of quiet.
she blinked, slow and unsure. she wasn’t sure what she felt.
curiosity, maybe.or envy.or admiration, wound up in a knot so tight it couldn’t be pulled free.
she knew she could never have gone over like that. could never sit effortlessly. could never make her sit with her.
she clutched her bento a little tighter.
back in the center of the garden, the conversation continued, as soft as it was unexpected.
"there’s something strange about you," ino said. ameiko smiled faintly. "there’s something strange about most people." sakura looked down at her fingers. "it’s just… we don’t get it."
"what don’t you get?"
"why people like you."
ino smacked her. "sakura!"
"what?" sakura shot her a glare. "she knows. look around." ameiko’s smile didn’t falter. "i don’t think they like me."
"oh, believe me" ino muttered, crossing her arms.
"they like the idea of me," ameiko said quietly. "not the girl. just the image." sakura frowned, her voice softer now. "that’s... kind of sad." ameiko gave a small shrug. "it’s not so bad. if i were loud or harsh or blunt, they wouldn’t listen."
"they’d still look at you" ino said bitterly. ameiko turned to her, gaze gentler than before. "but you want them to listen."
ino opened her mouth.
then closed it.
sakura glanced between them. "are we… having a civil conversation?"
"i think we are" ameiko said, sipping from her thermos with both hands. "…i hate this" ino muttered. "no, you don’t." sakura said, nudging her with an elbow. ameiko didn’t speak. just smiled again, warm, knowing, not quite readable.
another breeze passed through the courtyard, and petals rained down like soft punctuation. for a long time, they didn’t speak. then, as if confessing something she didn’t expect to say, ameiko murmured, "i thought you two would hate me forever."
sakura looked at her, genuinely puzzled. "we were supposed to." ino sighed, brushing a petal from her lap. "you’re really annoying, you know that?" ameiko smiled, bowing her head slightly. "so i’ve been told."
"…but you’re kind of hard to hate."
sakura looked away. "don’t get used to this."
"i won’t," ameiko replied. "i never do."
when the bell rang, the girls stood at the same time. not in sync but no longer in opposition either. as they crossed the courtyard again, eyes followed them like satellites.
naruto gasped. "did they just… hang out?"
“they didn’t explode?" kiba asked.
"no forehead biting?" someone whispered.
"are they a trio now?"
sasuke, leaning against the school wall, glanced at them once. just once. before turning his gaze back to the nowhere.
the three girls walked away not as enemies, but as something far more uncertain.
whatever had started beneath the wisteria wasn’t peace. it was tension dressed in quiet, waiting to bloom.

i really want this ninja academy, crushing-on-ameiko arc to end, so that we can finally proceed to original naruto storyline. my hands are itching to revise and upload my drafts but i was planning on starting next week. this week will be focusing solely on forming bonds and interactions with the main character.
also, i want to upload my other fan fiction too but if i do, it'll be hard for me to handle many things at once. especially that, i'm busy preparing for college. life is so hard for a girly like me, and i'm not even the strongest soldier out there.
anyways, cheer up, everyone! if you got something to say—feedbacks, concerns, and suggestions, say it i'm always willing to listen. 𝐓𝐇𝐀𝐍𝐊 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐒𝐎 𝐌𝐔𝐂𝐇 𝐅𝐎𝐑 𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐃𝐈𝐍𝐆 🫀
