Celebrating
06:36, 10 March 2015“So do you want to explain to me how you managed to get kicked out of the United Center, just minutes after we won?”
Not particularly. I glare at my boyfriend, who just laughs harder at this. I fail to see the humor.
“Blame her,” I point in the general direction of where Kailey sits. I’m so pissed I can’t even look at her. “She’s the one who got into a fistfight. All I did was back her up.”
“You threw the first punch!” She shouts from the corner.
“I did not!” I threw the last punch. Well, second to last.
The people sitting in the room with us all laugh, but I still don’t see why it’s funny. Because Kailey had to go and get in a fight we couldn’t celebrate with the team. Who knows when or if we’ll ever get that opportunity again?
“Let it go babe,” Patrick says, pulling me down onto his lap. “The only person who’s mad here is you. Let it go and just enjoy the fact that we won.”
I pout for a few more seconds just because I can. “Don’t tell me what to do.”
He mock glares, and I can’t stop the smile that breaks out on my face. “You aren’t scary baby.”
His face shifts in a split second. His smile lights up his face. I’m pretty sure the entire room just got brighter from it. “Not to you, but the guys on the other team always get scared when they see me coming.”
“You had the least amount of hits on the entire team,” Jonathan shouts from, most likely, the same spot as Kailey.
“Yeah but I also had the most points! Goalies cringe in fear when they see me coming!” He’s a little drunk already, but it’s cute. And kind of hilarious.
Patrick pouts when the room laughs, but I kiss the frown right off his face. “Babe,” I whisper. “You just won your third Stanley Cup.”
There’s that smile again. “In six years,” he reminds me.
I giggle. “Yes! You’re third in six years! That’s unbelievable.”
“Nope, I believe it completely,” he says. “We worked so fucking hard for this cup. We worked through long scoring slumps, dragging comebacks, more injuries than I care to look back at, and we still won. We fucking did it!” He’s screaming by the end, and the room cheers.
After that the night blurs by. I know we drink a lot, I know we celebrate hard, and I know that everyone but me and Patrick leave in a cab.
Once everyone is gone, we head upstairs to the rooms we’d stayed in last time we were here at Tazer’s.
Patrick stops me at the top of the stairs, leaning me against a wall.
“We did it Jen,” he whispers. “We really did it.”
“Yeah,” I whisper back. I notice idly that my words are slurred. I must be really far gone to be slurring. “You did it. But are you really surprised?”
He nods. “A little bit,” he’s slurring too, something in the back of my mind notes. “There was a time there, when I was injured, and before that when we couldn’t seem to go on a winning streak, where I panicked a little. But we did it, we pulled it out. And I’m so fucking happy.”
“I’m so fucking happy for you,” I tell him.
“We earned this.”
I nod. “You did, you guys really did.”
He smiles slowly. “I’m so damn happy.”
I feel that my answering smile is a little bit off. I am really drunk. “Me too.”
“I’m happy you’re here.”
I laugh a little. “Oh me too babe.”
“Sharing this with you has made this just that much better,” he doesn’t give me a chance to react before he’s kissing me. I kiss him back, hard, not caring that neither of us is sober, or that we probably won’t remember it in the morning. Right now I just want to celebrate this amazing success for him. By making out with him.
“Get a room,” we break apart to see Kailey and Jonathan standing at the top of the stairs. “On second thought, don’t you’re both drunk and that can’t end well.”
I flip off my best friend before turning back to my boyfriend. We stare awkwardly at each other for a moment before we start laughing.
“We really are too drunk to do this,” he whispers in my ear. I nod, agreeing.
“We shouldn’t share a room then,” I say, biting my lip. “No telling what we might do in celebration if we do.”
A pained look crosses his face, but he agrees with a slight nod. “I guess this is goodnight then.”
I smile at him before heading to the door across from his. “Goodnight.”
