Chapter 3
17:14, 2 June 2016HHYL Fanfic2 chapter 3
Pacing back and forth in the Royal Court's Hall, King Huan Hu Tong couldn't hide his anxiety. He was waiting for news from his General about the other party who disrupted the truce negotiations between Datong and Mingdi.
He still could clearly feel the dreadful menacing aura that radiated from Datong's Emperor as he declared his threat. Huan Hu Tong knew it all too well, that kind of strong piercing tone, Emperor Jing Zong wasn't threatening him, but warning him. He would do what he said for sure. --- Huan Hu Tong couldn't help but shudder from head to toe.
Anyone who dared to stand up against the Datong Empire must have lost their minds. Just look at what Datong did to the Country of Xiang. Nobody knew the real reason, but one thing was for sure, in only a day, any traces of their existence were wiped out. Upon remembering this fact, Huan Hu Tong's face drained of all its color. He shook his head dejectedly and wondered why he agreed to take up Datong's challenge in the first place.
An announcement from the entrance. Lady Yu was coming to see him. Upon hearing the announcement, he lightened up and broke into a lascivious smile immediately.
"Greeting, Your Majesty..." Her lithe as a willow body bowed gracefully while her beautifully shining long black hair was arranged in an intricate series of loops and coils on top of her head, decorated with elaborate buyao hairpins and other golden ornaments, all of which were studded with precious gems. The precious metals reflected light, creating a halo around her head. The swaying of the delicate pendants from Lady Yu's buyaos accentuated her own movements as she slowly approached.
"Yu Er... Come here...." Huan Hu Tong held his favorite concubine to ease his distress while his obvious desire rose.
Lady Yu, the most beautiful concubine in his harem. He could smell her enthralling fragrance even before he saw her. Her petite stature was perfect and fitted into his form snugly. Her soft body was sweet as cotton candy, and her breasts were round and firm, like delicious mantou. Just the thought of those pert breasts made him lick his lips uncontrollably. Her legs were long and slender, however, her thighs were surprisingly strong when wrapped around his waist during the height of ecstasy. Her voice had a very calming and alluring effect. Her round and big eyes, sparkled like water reflecting rays of sunlight. Her sweet red lips, wet and moist, invited anyone who looked upon them to have a taste on them all the time.
Huan Hu Tong lost all his coherent senses just thinking of Lady Yu and her enticing body. Seeing her in person now, Huan Hu Tong kissed those seductive lips hungrily like a starved beast. Licking and sucking, as if he wanted to eat both of those rosy lips.
"Ahhh... Your Majesty... Slower....." Her moaning voice inflamed Huan Hu Tong's desire even more. Impatiently, he grasped both of her soft yet firm breasts and kneaded them excitedly. Loosing himself in his desire to devour this concubine instantly. He even forgot that he was in the throne room, the sacred place for him to run his country. Like a hungry wolf, he roughly tore open Lady Yu's dress, hurriedly jumped on her, briefly worshipped her smooth white body and hastily found that place to release himself. With only a few rough and quick thrusts he came, without any regard for his concubine.
"Your Majesty, you are so naughty...." A little while after, Lady Yu looked seductively at Huan Hu Tong while complaining without much resolve. She slowly tidied up her disordered dress, lingering long enough for Huan Hu Tong to have a full view of her naked body.
"You are too seductive, Yu Er..."
"Hmmph! I know you say that to all your concubines... I won't be happy with this type of petty flattery..." Pouting her red lips in a childish way, Lady Yu pretended to be upset. All the while she leaned closely against Huan Hu Tong, making sure her full breasts and sensual body was in contact with his body.
"Ai yaaa... Yu Er... How many times have I told you, you are my most favorite..." Huan Hu Tong busily tried to convince his seemingly sulking concubine. Hugged her tightly while his right hand busy kneaded her enticing breast. His desire had built up again.
"Hmmph! How could I believe you? Your Majesty has countless beautiful concubines, who knows if you haven't said the same words to all those concubines too..."
"Yu Er... Why won't you believe me..."
Hearing the desperate tone in the self-indulgent King's voice, Lady Yu smiled triumphantly. "Alright , alright... I was just teasing you... I know you dote on me the most... You will always listen to my requests, right??"
"Of course!!"
"Then... How about my latest request? Have you fulfilled it yet??"
Huan Hu Tong fell silent at once. Even his little brother down there lost all interest and went limp instantly. He didn't know how to answer her.
"Yu Er... You know that it is nearly impossible, don't you?" His old face looked worn-out all of a sudden. The lust in his eyes and the lecherous expression he showed just a moment ago bubbled up and vapored into thin air.
Dramatically changing her initial full-of-seduction smiling face into a disappointed one, she hung her head in sorrow, eyes brimming with tears.
"Then, you are not sincere in saying that you will listen to me... Xiang Yu is really disappointed..." Wearing her most pitiful expression, she looked at Huan Hu Tong and softly sobbed pitifully.
"Yu Er.... No... Whatever you want, I can give you... But.... This time...." Shaking his head, Huan Hu Tong helplessly sighed. "Emperor Jing Zong is truly an awfully horrible man. I can't afford to have my Kingdom end up as your country did by angering this terrifying Emperor." Reminded of this frightening Emperor, he shuddered all over again.
Indeed, this Lady Yu was a Princess from the annihilated Xiang Country, Xiang Wen's elder sister. She was sent as a tribute from Xiang to Mingdi. The King of Xiang's sole aim was for his daughters to seduce their respective Emperor or King so that they could influence the leader of that kingdom. Lady Yu was successful in capturing the King's heart and gaining his utmost favor. ---Resulting in her now comfortable life, power and luxury. Lady Yu could be acknowledged as the shadow behind most of Huan Hu Tong decisions. She worked tirelessly to gain favors not only from Huan Hu Tong but also from a group of high-powered courtiers. Huan Hu Tong was so bewitched by her seductive charm that even the Queen was banished to the cold palace when she went against Lady Yu. Even after protests by her son the Crown Prince and various loyal ministers, Huan Hu Tong refused to relent for fear of Lady Yu's displeasure.
Huan Hu Tong, despite his status as a supreme ruler, was still extremely afraid of Datong. --- Not only Datong, he was a natural coward and didn't possess any good qualities befitting a King. He only cared for himself, partied all the time, had fun and surrounded himself with his beautiful concubines.
Naturally, he didn't want to engage in any disadvantageous battles against Datong and wanted to yield at Datong's first attack. But Lady Yu, with her many skills, coaxed him to raise his flag and accept Datong's challenge. To please her and spurred on by the thought of his reward in bed, he promised her the Emperor's head. He committed his country to a battle with Datong to avenge Lady Yu's Royal Family of Xiang. However he was much too cowardly to lead his troops personally, preferring to delegate his command.
Upon hearing of the seemingly endless battle that was depleting both soldiers and resources, Huan Hu Tong soon began to regret his promise, not only that he could never get the Emperor's head as he promised, surely Lady Yu would be highly displeased by this failure as well.
Presumably, his cowardliness nature won over his whatever sweet words. After his meeting with the formidable Emperor, he realized he needed another way to sweet-talk his beloved concubine. ---He loved his own self and his position as King more than anything. He might impulsively said he would present the Emperor of Datong's head to his most beloved concubine, but in the end, it only took a mere threat from this formidable Emperor, ---- no... it wasn't even a mere threat, it was a genuine warning, and he had already desperately convinced himself that it was for the better to offer Lady Yu another "gift".
"Yu Er... Only this one thing I can't grant you..." Huan Hu Tong held her slightly quivering shoulder. "Even Shu Cheng was captured by the mysterious enemy. Yan Li and Yan Yi are investigating this matter at the moment." Huan Hu Tong frowned deeply. Worrying about Huan Shu Cheng a little, then burdened by the very image of the enraged Emperor again. Shuddering at the possibilities of Emperor Jing Zong wiping out their Country while Shu Cheng was not there to give him any guidance on how to proceed.
Lady Yu was fully aware about Huan Hu Tong craven personality. She also knew very well about Huan Hu Tong's lack of any capability. Actually she wasn't surprised at all at this kind of result, given his usual uselessness and indecisiveness. That Mingdi could survive for more than three months in this battle was all because of Huan Shu Cheng, their Royal Crown Prince, the man Lady Yu was wary of and kept a distance from, for he was not someone who would fall for beauty or pleasure.
Still hiding her annoyance at the King, Lady Yu pretended to be saddened by such news. Faking her concern for the troubled King.
"Crown Prince was taken by the enemy?? My...... How can it be??"
"Shu Cheng was protecting me..."
"I see.... I am sorry for my selfish request, Your Majesty...."
Huan Hu Tong just patted his favorite concubine's shoulder and nodded his tired head. "It's alright Yu Er... As long as you can understand....."
-------
In a moving carriage....
Lu Cang was still unconscious.
Huan Shu Cheng had since long ago freed himself from the rope that bound him. Analyzing the situation, he decided to escape from the cart before they reached the enemy's base. It would be too much trouble if they happened to be under the enemy's custody.
Watching the breathing spell of the unconscious Second-in-Command, Shu Cheng was a little bit worried. He had checked his condition. Fortunately, there wasn't anything poisonous in his system. He was only grazed by a very strong tranquilizer which normally could put a strong horse to sleep for two days straight, so, needless to say the effects on a human body. Shu Cheng clicked his tongue in irritation.
To be honest, Shu Cheng was voluntarily caught by the enemy when he saw that this Second-in-Command was taken. He even wondered, why did he do such a reckless thing? It was not in his nature to act without thinking and to compromise his Royal Father's safety for someone he had only known for such a short time. This was the very first time he had behaved like this.
Putting aside his own complicated feelings, Shu Cheng focused on possible escape plans. To take the Second-in-Command with him while he was still unconscious would be too much of a hindrance. No matter how strong Shu Cheng was, to escape while carrying a full grown man in his arms was something even he himself doubted he could do. Not to mention his uncertainty as to when the Second-in-Command would awake. --- Judging from the effects of the tranquilizer, it must be of a very strong dose. There was a high possibility that the Second-in-Command might not be able to wake up for a week. Shu Cheng was disturbed by this prospect yet he was reluctant to leave the Second-in-Command behind.
Shu Cheng looked around to find something that could be used for his plans. He was so absorbed that he didn't notice the stirring body by his side. Inevitably, he was highly surprised when his eyes met those pair of hazy and misty eyes belonging to the Second-in-Command. --- Those pair of dimmed eyes were looking at him with such blurry and ambiguous emotions before the confused face of the Second-in-Command suddenly cleared and was replaced by the sweetest and most honest smile he ever saw.
"You are safe... That's good...." Whispering some unclear words, Lu Cang wore a clear expression of relief.
Shu Cheng couldn't help but be stunned upon the sight of that pure concern. ---He must have confused Shu Cheng with somebody else. But nevertheless, Shu Cheng's heart skipped a beat for that simple smile. --- A careless smile that wasn't even meant for Shu Cheng. Out of nowhere, he felt a pinch of jealousy. Shu Cheng knotted his brows in displeasure.
Gradually, gaining his consciousness, ---which amazed Shu Cheng to the utmost, Lu Cang tried to sit upright to have a clear look of the situation. He slowly propped his body up with his elbow while looking around with his half sitting half reclining posture. --- Shu Cheng held his breath and waited for Lu Cang's next reaction.
"Where are we?" The rocking motion clearly indicated that they were in some kind of carriage, yet Lu Cang couldn't help questioning. He had always been a person who blurted out whatever came across his mind without much thought. This trait of his was particularly endearing to Jing and one which would be used as his source of mockery most of the time.
Unfortunately, Shu Cheng also found his question highly amusing. He put on his smiling face and answered in the softest voice he could manage. --- He didn't want the enemy to know that they both were in their full awareness.
"We were taken. I'm not sure where we are currently being transported to but the highest likelihood is their base."
Lu Cang had prepared himself for some kind of ridiculing words from Jing, therefore, upon hearing that unfamiliar soft but somehow soothing voice, Lu Cang finally realized, he was not with Jing. He was with someone else... a stranger. Panic floated from the bottom of his mind and materialized in his strikingly sharp eyes. What happened to Jing after that sudden ambush?? Anxiety filled his heart.
He wanted to sit up properly but a sudden wave of numbness prevented him and reduced him to assuming a laying down helpless position instead. However, before his head could hit the floor of the cart, Shu Cheng had moved with unbelievable speed and had his head fully supported. Resulting in their somewhat awkward position. --- With Lu Cang's head resting on the crook of Shu Cheng's arm, their line of vision indivertibly would meet. Their faces were intimately close to each other.
Up close, Lu Cang saw how beautiful this stranger was. Looking at him in such a close proximity, Lu Cang could see that his beauty could be on par with Jing's. However, Jing's beauty was still on a higher level as Jing's beauty was one normally only afforded to divine beings, yet he was cold and unapproachable, while this man's beauty, albeit exceptional, distinguishable from Jing's, was as warm as the sunlight. Dazzling but not blinding. --- Lu Cang was blinded by Jing's beauty the first time he laid his eyes on 'her'.
This shameful position reminded him of the way Jing used to hold him, Lu Cang couldn't restrain the slight layer of red from shadowing his face for a short moment, embarrassed, he quickly turned his face to the side and redirected his eyes to look somewhere else.
Again, that slight self-conscious yet adorable change on Lu Cang's face didn't escape Shu Cheng eyes. --- He was used to seeing his blushing concubines, but a blushing man was totally much more intoxicating. Moreover, this was coming from the man he couldn't take his eyes off of from the first time he set his eyes upon him. Shu Cheng felt pleasant emotions stirring in his heart for a yet unexplained reason. He couldn't stop a delicate smile from escaping his lips.
Lu Cang was desperately trying to gather his Qi, to dissipate the effects of whatever drug was in his system in order to gain better control over his own body. Thanks to Jing's Qi, in only a short while, he already could free himself from his hopeless state. ---Lying there like some kind of princess on another man's arm!! If Jing saw this, surely all hell would break loose and both their lives would be severely shortened if not ended!! Lu Cang reprimanded himself for his weakness and for putting himself and whoever this stranger was in this predicament.
Awakening this fast from the effects of such a strong tranquilizer was already a very amazing fact, now this Second-in-Command was actually clearing it from his body using his Qi, evidently, this outstandingly handsome man was a very formidable man. His kung-fu level must be already very high, and judging by his calm and nearly emotionless face, --- if not for the brief angelic smile and momentary blush he had revealed just now ---, his position as the Military Second-in Command could not be just an accessory.
"How are you feeling now?" Wearing his usual congenial smile, Shu Cheng helped Lu Cang to sit.
"Better. Thank you..." Lu Cang quickly pushed Shu Cheng's hands away from his upper arms and nodded his head to express his gratitude for the help.
Suppressing his disappointment, --- Shu Cheng was surprised at himself for this strange feeling of disappointment --- still with his lowered voice, he told Lu Cang about their predicament.
"We will be highly disadvantaged if we reach their base. From the way they boldly attacked us, I doubt they would just leave us unharmed. So, we should quickly escape from them. The sooner the better."
Frowning his perfect brows, Lu Cang fell into the depths of his mind. Even without this beautiful man telling him about escaping, he would try his best to get back to Jing as soon as possible. He couldn't help but be anxious about Jing after that vicious ambush. He needed to know that Jing was safe. He was even starting to blame himself for suggesting the truce negotiation. If anything happened to Jing he wouldn't be able to forgive himself. No, his first priority at the moment was to reunite with Jing.
"Very well... My condition is quite alright for a little air kung-fu. How about you?" Somehow, Lu Cang could tell that this man wasn't unlearnt in terms of martial arts. But Lu Cang had no way to determine exactly how good he was.
"I am alright I guess...However, these guys are noticeably good. We couldn't just sneak out unnoticed. At least, we need some plan to safely get away from them."
"Why bother? Either way, they would notice. So, just get to the point. We could draw them away as far as we could with our air kung-fu. This way, our enemy wouldn't be as many, as the slow ones would surely be left behind. Number wise, we reduce them. If we don't have to concern ourselves with numbers, we could at least concentrate only on the strongest ones. Thus, we could shake those off and proceed to escape."
Royal Crown Prince Huan Shu Cheng, had the highest confidence in himself as a Military Adviser because he had employed numerous strategies successfully in battle, yet, he was extremely fascinated by this man's straight forward but most effective tactic. ---Shu Cheng had concocted countless schemes to escape, but none of them was as effective as what this Second-in-Command just told him.
Greatly pleased, he smiled widely. "Great... seems like you have confidence in your air kung-fu".
But of course. Lu Cang was known as "The Eagle" before he met his destined partner. Not like Lu Cang could or would tell him something like that.
"Let's move!" Lu Cang said impatiently. He didn't want to waste any more time chatting with this striking stranger. He wanted to get back to Jing as soon as possible. He needed to know for himself that Jing was alright. Nothing else could calm his racing heart.
"Wait.... Let me be the bait, I will go out first, when all of their attention is on me, you quickly make your move." Determined to show Lu Cang his good quality, Shu Cheng told him the best tactic he could think of to impress him.
Instantly, Lu Cang's temper flared and he glared furiously at the stranger. His eyes widened in anger, emanating daggers. --- Which Shu Cheng found so charming.
"What do you take me as?" His cold tone reminded Shu Cheng that as much as this man was adorable, he was still a very capable Second-in-Command.
"Forgive me...I am used to being the bait, so, unconsciously..." Cleverly, Shu Cheng recovered from his blunder. Actually, it wasn't a blunder at all. Shu Cheng was being protective of this man whom he had just met. What a perplexing feeling!
"Forget it...We will get out from this predicament together. No one will be the bait, no one will be left behind."
After they confirmed their plan, they tried to look at the surroundings, figuring out the best direction in which to flee. Even for Shu Cheng, their surroundings were foreign. He hadn't been in this place before, meaning, either they were in another region, or in a secluded area that was rarely used by travelers.
In the end, they went to the direction based on Lu Cang's suggestion, to the West.
Without wasting any more time, both of them executed their plan. Jumped off the moving cart, and in a blink of an eye flew to the West.
Taken by surprise, the enemies just looked towards the two flying shadows without any immediate reactions.
"CHASE THEM!!!!"
The shouting voice of their leader, followed by the flying black shadows, snapped them from their daze. Hastily, they all ran towards the direction where the former captives had flown off.
Lu Cang's plan was a success. Most of the not-too-skilled pursuers were left behind. Looked like the highly skilled ones were those guys in black, who took Lu Cang and Shu Cheng by surprise back then in the tent. There were only five of them.
Half an hour later, they were already so far away from the enemies except for those five. Shu Cheng decided that they were not going to waste their Qi for running anymore. Signaling to Lu Cang that it was already quite a good place to confront the enemies, Shu Cheng nodded his head. Both of them stopped and landed lightly on the ground. Getting ready for the fight ahead. Lu Cang was picking out a long twig that lay nearby as a replacement of his sword. He was a swordman after all, hand-to-hand combat wasn't his specialization.
Shu Cheng was fine with either. He was skilled in both unarmed combat and with weaponry.
They didn't have to wait for a long time, the enemies soon caught up with them, instantly forming a circle, surrounding both of them.
Eyeing them one by one, determining which enemy he should take on first, Shu Cheng was extremely shocked when the man beside him charged at them without much consideration. Even though the enemy's numbers had reduced to only five, still, Shu Cheng frowned at Lu Cang's reckless move. But he quickly joined in the fight.
Evidently, their skills were much better than their pursuers. After struggling for a while, --- The pursuers, the five in black, used very good teamwork, thus Lu Cang and Shu Cheng struggled. In the end, they had successfully triumphed over their pursuers.
Purposely injuring their pursuers' feet badly to avoid another exhausting run and chase situation, Lu Cang and Shu Cheng left them and went straight towards the West. All the while, Shu Cheng was keenly aware of how compatibly the both of them had worked together. Shu Cheng found himself drawn deeper to the Second-in-Command.
-------
A couple hours later...
Despite travelling as fast as they could in silence, they were still nowhere near their destination. To Lu Cang's irritation, from the place where Datong and Mingdi held negotiations, they had already been brought to a very far distance. ---Lu Cang was knocked out for almost half a day, no wonder they had travelled so far.
"Sir..." Shu Cheng didn't know how to properly address Lu Cang since he didn't know his name. "The enemy can no longer pursue us. We could slow down a little..."
Lu Cang ignored his companion. The only thoughts in his mind were: He needed to rush back to Jing; he needed to see if Jing was alright and any thoughts of delay were nothing but a nuisance.
"Sir, the enemy is nowhere in sight. We could ...." Shu Cheng tried again to get Lu Cang's attention without showing his agitation. He was not used to being ignored by anyone, whether they were female or male.
"The sun is almost set, if we do not make haste, we could lose our way easily in this vast and thick greenery." Lu Cang cut him off and didn't try to hide his irritation. His voice was harsh, clearly indicating his impatience.
"Even if we rush with all our might, given how far we are from our base, we still couldn't make it before the sun sets." In contrast with Lu Cang's petulance, Shu Cheng was being extremely tolerant and patiently informed Lu Cang about their situation.
Ah!!!
Lu Cang was abruptly reminded that the beautiful man beside him was also in the same predicament. All this while, Lu Cang's mind was so occupied by Jing that he barely gave any thoughts to his companion.
Slowing down his steps, Lu Cang carefully looked at the friendly face beside him.
"Forgive me... I was being rude."
Shu Cheng didn't answer him, instead, he bestowed upon him his best smile. ---Lu Cang was caught off guard by this unexpected smile. Froze for a moment.
Shu Cheng, as a matter of fact, was aware of Lu Cang's reaction. He had to admit, this was the very first time he had to utilize his smile in an attempt to charm someone. Usually, people would melt solely by his gaze. But having been together for quite some time with this man, he was still totally unaware of Shu Cheng's attractiveness. Not even caring to take a glance.
"Ahhh.... You are Mingdi's Adviser... Pardon my late greeting. Sir....."
With his mind occupied solely by Jing, Lu Cang almost forgot that there was someone else by his side. Upon a clear look, he immediately realized that this man was in fact Mingdi's young and beautiful Adviser whom he stared at so intensely during their truce negotiations, resulting in a frown and threat from Jing. --- Apparently, all this while Lu Cang was together with this gorgeous Mingdi Adviser. All of a sudden, Jing's threat flashed in his mind. Only by staring at another beautiful man, Jing was already so furious, what if Jing found out that he was with this charming man for the entire day? Lu Cang could vividly see the raging Jing in his mind, causing him to smile bitterly.
Shu Cheng was not sure whether to be happy or offended that the Second-in-Command had finally noticed him. Allowing his uncertain-for-the-first-time feeling to slip away, he smiled pleasantly at the Second-in-Command.
"Huan Shu Cheng. And may I know you by name? Sir...."
"Lu Cang."
"Sir Lu then..... Nice to make your acquaintance ...."
Lu Cang noticed that this man had a very likeable personality. He smiled patiently despite Lu Cang's rudeness, ---Lu Cang had been ignoring him all this while and didn't introduce himself properly. His smile was pleasant to calm Lu Cang's jittery heart, and above all, he was very courteous.
"Sir Huan, "
"You can call me by Shu Cheng. I don't mind..." Since he wanted to be on friendlier terms with Lu Cang, it was only natural if Shu Cheng wanted Lu Cang to call him in a friendly manner.
An obvious flash of doubt passed through Lu Cang's eyes and lingered on his creased brows. --- The last time a beautiful beyond words man asked him to call him by name, to Lu Cang's trauma, was his very own freak of an Emperor...Jing.
"I am fully aware that currently we are not standing on the same point of view, however, we are boarding the same ship at the moment, we should work together and help each other out. If we stay in our suspecting each other condition... I am afraid that we wouldn't make it...."
Coaxing someone with flowery words was one of Shu Cheng's most prominent abilities. Making his arguments with the utmost reason was his basic skill. To convince someone as straightforward as Lu Cang was not something impossible for him. With just this reasoning, he could see the muscles in Lu Cang's face relax.
Nodding his head, Lu Cang seemingly agreed with Shu Cheng. "I see your point. It was not because I found you untrustworthy, it is merely because I see it as inappropriate to address someone as great as Sir Huan by name." Lu Cang inwardly praised himself for using those highly sophisticated kind of words. He had never thought that the boring literature Jing had been feeding him would be useful. He needed to thank Jing later......If he could return to Jing. --- His anxiety was coming back to him again. Crawling and gnawing in his head.
"No... No... I am not worth the praise. The truly admirable one here is Sir Lu. Sir Lu is the Military Second-in-Command, what's more, considering how young Sir Lu is, this achievement is even more noteworthy." Shu Cheng was actually quite annoyed, his coaxing words definitely didn't serve the intended effect on Lu Cang. Still, he couldn't afford to show any emotion but his signature smiling face. --- He had learned that showing any unnecessary emotion would mean that one was showing one's weakness.
Lu Cang, who knew very well how he gained his position, --- by asking Jing to let him join the Military Force --- would of course blush slightly from embarrassment despite the honest statement by the enemy's Adviser. His blush did not go unnoticed by the observant Shu Cheng, further increasing his curiosity of Sir Lu, bubbling up another new kind of feelings.
"Not worthy... Not worthy..." Returning the salute, he flexibly changed the topic. "Sir Huan, are you not familiar with the environment albeit this is part of Mingdi?"
"Truthfully... I don't venture much into the mountain nor the forest." Why would a Crown Prince venture into a forest? Shu Cheng was not one with an adventurous side, he would rather spend his time indulging himself in the military strategies books. "But I will see to it, to safely bring Sir Lu back to Datong's camp."
Lu Cang was unable to retain his sneer. "Sir Huan... We are practically in the same hopeless situation, why would you do that? I can't see any reason for you to send me back to my camp. I can do it by myself." Lu Cang's pride was hurt. To have Jing treat him as a useless fool was more than enough to make him lose his temper, now this Adviser was doing the same thing as Jing. Lu Cang truly couldn't stand it.
Seeing that Lu Cang was annoyed by his good deed, Shu Cheng masked his words with another acceptable high reasoning.
"No, Sir Lu... You misunderstood me.... What I actually mean was, when this whole messed up situation happened, Datong and Mingdi was in the middle of negotiations. I surely do not wish for Datong to think that we are responsible for this ambush, therefore, by going back together with you to your respected camp, I can clear up any accusations that Datong might have."
"You are right.... I am sorry for taking your intention the wrong way, Sir Huan."
Though Lu Cang could comprehend his reason, Lu Cang still felt reluctant to return to the camp together with this charming Adviser. Fully aware of Jing's jealous nature, Lu Cang didn't even want to think about Jing's reaction.
Forcefully pushing away the image of a Jing consumed by jealousy image, Lu Cang sighed when he casted his eyes at the dusky sky. Very soon, night would fall and envelop the whole land with its veil of black. They would have to spend the night in the wild, for it wasn't a wise move to advance in the dark, one trifle slip, they might end up losing their lives.
It wasn't the fact that they were in the forest that fazed Lu Cang, it was the very thought of spending the night without Jing, not knowing Jing's exact condition was what caused Lu Cang to knit his brows, his whole face overcast by restlessness.
The sky was starless, not even a speck could be seen. The cold harsh wind was telling them about the approaching stormy night. Adding more to Lu Cang's discomforting feeling. Shu Cheng was well aware of Lu Cang's changing expression but he silently kept on observing him.
It was quite their luck, before the forest was covered by the darkness, they found a grand old tree with a shady branch, and a large hollow hole, ---probably caused by its great age, enough to shade them from the harsh weather that seemed to be approaching. As dangerous as it might seem, --- the tree might collapse anytime under the torture of the severe winds --- it was still a better option than staying in the open, exposed to the cold rain.
Under this kind of weather, Lu Cang couldn't help but recall the times when Jing came for him in every possible place, and even some improbable ones. Lu Cang also fondly remembered the various expressions Jing would wear on those occasions. With his sometimes irritated face when Lu Cang took too long of a time talking with Xiang Wen or Sir Liu, with his playful face when he planned to do some mischief at the Lotus Garden, or sometimes with his unreasonably angry face when Lu Cang was training the soldiers.
"You should be thankful that I am coming, if not... you would be down with another cold!"
There was a sudden pang in his heart when he recalled the sweet concerning tone those simple words he had previously not appreciated produced. Admittedly, all this while, he had taken Jing's affection for granted. He was being ungrateful. Now, he strongly wished and yearned for Jing to come and fetch him like he used to do. He promised himself, he wouldn't complain anymore. Alas, he could only wish........ No. This time he must find his way back to Jing! He couldn't always have Jing come for him.
"Sir Lu..." Shu Cheng was tired of being ignored and decided to pull Lu Cang from his reminiscing.
Lu Cang was too busy in his own thoughts that he had forgotten that he was with Sir Huan, the congenial Adviser of Mingdi's Country.
"Yes??" Unwillingly, he answered to the call.
"Are you worrying about something? You have been sighing nonstop." A distinct thoughtfulness from Shu Cheng reminded Lu Cang that the man by his side was a very attentive man. He seemed to notice the smallest details around him. It was truly fortunate that it was dark, otherwise, Shu Cheng might see his shamefully longing face.
"Not really... Just want to get back to the camp as soon as possible."
Shu Cheng found Lu Cang's vulnerability endearing and had an urge to protect him. Furthermore he was aware that Lu Cang's thoughts were far away. For some unidentified reasons, he was both jealous and annoyed at the same time, therefore, he tried to draw Lu Cang's wondering attention to him. ---Shu Cheng was not used to being second fiddle to anyone. Yet, Lu Cang didn't seem too eager to hold a conversation. He didn't let loose his guarded state. Shu Cheng found this a real challenge and he was adamant to get this man's full attention.
"I see...." Shu Cheng didn't want to end their hard to build conversation, he tried his best to find another topic. "You don't seem bothered at all to be in the wild. Are you used to staying the night in the wild?"
At this moment, Lu Cang just wanted to drown himself in silence and think about Jing. But he also had to be considerate so he forced himself to accompany Shu Cheng in his idle chat, and to provide himself a little distraction from his all too depressed state.
"Yes... When I was small, I used to go hunting with my brothers, often, we had to stay in the wild for several nights." Upon the reminiscence of his former life as a Mountain Bandit King, unconsciously, Lu Cang was eased from his worry.
Originally Lu Cang had only intended to reply to Shu Cheng's idle chat, upon the talks about his brothers, he started to talk about his life in the mountain without revealing his previous status, a Mountain Bandit King. Very animatedly he recounted all of the adventures he had with his brothers. Sometimes laughing out loud while describing their mischievous deeds while at other times he unconsciously glared while remembering their frustratingly obstinate manners. Unconsciously Lu Cang revealed his honesty, loyalty and protectiveness towards his brothers. Shu Cheng found himself highly captivated and charmed by Lu Cang.
Shu Cheng reciprocated by telling him about his adventures as a kid. Exploring the palace. And many things that piqued Lu Cang's interest. All the while Lu Cang was imagining Jing as a kid as he listened to Shu Cheng's escapades. They engaged in their friendly conversation until the daybreak. Shu Cheng was pleased that he finally got Lu Cang's attention while Lu Cang was thankful for the distractions Shu Cheng provided.
However at the very first spark of daylight, Lu Cang insisted they resume their journey, unconcerned about the lingering drizzle from last night's storm.
It was not an easy journey at all.
Unfortunately their pursuers had persisted in chasing them while they were resting. Resulting in another fierce battle. They were outnumbered, but with their combined skills eventually they managed to overcome the enemies. Well, it was mostly Shu Cheng's doing actually, albeit he managed to accomplish this feat so discreetly that Lu Cang failed to notice and thus was not offended. Shu Cheng had figured out some of Lu Cang's traits. ---One of them, he was highly displeased with anyone that he counted as disregarding his ability. In short, Lu Cang cared about his images and reputation.
The cost for their victory was fairly dear. Both of them had to exert all of their energy to fight. ---Rendering them almost powerless. At the last moment the last standing attacker managed to injure Lu Cang on his leg.
They were already in a debilitated condition given they stayed on guard all night long, --- chatting happily actually, and to face another assault, it went without saying that they would have no other choice but to support each other's weakened body along the way back to the camp. --- Shu Cheng was cheering inwardly for this, taking advantage of the situation to get closer to Lu Cang. Unnoticed by Lu Cang who only wanted to get back to Jing as fast as possible, Shu Cheng also took the opportunity to wrap his arm tightly around Lu Cang's waist while supporting his injured body. Greatly enjoyed the pleasant feeling he got from this kind of body contact.
Even with Lu Cang's pure stubbornness and determination, it was before noon when they arrived at the camp.
Huan Shu Cheng had to suppress his unknown sinking feeling when the camp was within range of their eyes' sight. It was not the feeling of fear for sure. ---Shu Cheng had never feared anything or anyone. Most likely, the feeling was regarding this handsome and bright Second-in-Command by his side. He had developed some kind of feelings of attachment for this man during their one day together. Sighing, Shu Cheng looked at the determined to move forward no matter what happens Lu Cang.
As they were getting closer, the stay on guard soldiers were eyeing them with such suspicion, all the while on their standby stance. Upon the sight of their Second-in-Command, their stance broke to a relaxing, ..... more like, a sincerely pleased to see him expression. ---The exclamation from the soldiers confirmed his last statement to be true.
"Lord Lu has come back.... Quick... Inform the Emperor...."
The soldiers on guard who happened to see Lu Cang's and Shu Cheng's arrival yelled excitedly. Followed by loud and happy cheers by the other soldiers.
Shu Cheng was quite surprised to see the loud cheering of the soldiers upon the sight of Lu Cang returning. He felt a rush of irrational pride that the man he regarded so highly was a capable commander much appreciated by his own soldiers. Even so, while obviously cheerful and delighted, he was flabbergasted when nobody came to help Lu Cang, rather, they kept their distance. As if they were afraid of something.
From their cheering, Lu Cang immediately understood the situation. Jing was safe and being extremely unreasonable, irritated to the utmost, thus the soldiers must have gone through some kind of very difficult situation to cope with Jing's wrath. --- Lu Cang leaked out a relieved chuckle and was finally able to let go of his highly-strung tension.
Holding on to his last shred of consciousness, he looked up at the flying Jing coming towards him, followed by Mu Yue and Ding Peng. He limped forward away from Shu Cheng's support and graciously fell into Jing's arms, with a contented smile...
