Part 114
08:20, 23 May 2026Noel didn't move from the corner. He stayed anchored in the shadows, his shoulders hunched inside his jacket, staring at the floor between them. The clinical snap of the door seemed to linger in the air, a physical boundary drawing a line over his sudden, violent outburst.
Caro watched him from the bed. The furious, frantic energy that had almost ripped her IV line out was completely gone, drained by the nurse's cold intervention and replaced by a heavy, hollow stillness. Her chest still arched weakly with every shallow breath, but her eyes were wide, fixed entirely on the fractured man standing across from her.
'Noel,' she whispered. The word was barely a thread of sound, lacking the sharp edge of her previous accusations. It was just tired. 'Come here. Look at me.'
He didn't lift his head immediately. He took a slow breath, forcing the raw, bleeding grief back down into his chest, trying to lock it away behind the stony facade she had always hated. But the lock was broken. When he finally looked up, his face was pale, his eyes heavily bloodshot and rimmed with a terrible, dark exhaustion.
He didn't step forward. He kept his distance, his hands clamped tight inside his pockets to hide the violent tremor running through his fingers.
'You're right,' Noel said, his voice flat, stripped of the booming anger that had just rattled the bedrails. It was low, rough, and completely defeated. 'I left you. I stayed away while you were going through hell, and there isn't a single second of my life where I won't carry the weight of that.'
Caro's fingers twitched against the bedsheets, her heart monitor giving a slow, steady beep that felt like a mockery of the tension building in her throat. 'Why?' she breathed, her gaze searching the hollow contours of his face. 'Noel, what happened last night? Why can't you just tell me? Be honest, Noel.'
Noel didn't answer. He couldn't. He just kept his eyes fixed on the floor, his jaw locking so hard a violent tremor rippled down his neck.
To Caro, that heavy, defensive silence was a completely different kind of confirmation. The pieces collided in her mind, warped by the raw bitterness of the morning and the thick haze of her sedatives. Noel did not shut down like this. He did not let a nurse bully him into submission, and he didn't stand by while she accused him of abandonment..unless he had already checked out.
A sudden, freezing clarity washed over her, and her face twisted into a mask of pure, devastating heartbreak.
'Ok, if you won't have the guts or the decency to tell me, I'll have to do it for you then,' Caro whispered. She pushed herself up slightly, ignoring the immediate, warning beep of the monitor as her heart rate began to climb. 'The only reason I can think of...why you stayed away last night is because you've had enough of me and you want out and you're too scared to tell me. I'm right, aren't I? I mean, I can't even remember the last time you kissed me..just now when you walked in, you couldn't even look at me..Not that I'm blaming you..'
The words hit him like a physical jolt.
Noel's eyes snapped open. The sheer absurdity of the accusation, colliding head-on with the raw, bleeding agony of what had actually happened, shattered his restraint completely.
'What? No! babe, no!' Noel choked out, his voice a desperate, frantic rasp as he rushed back to the side of the bed. He gripped the metal rail, leaning over her, his face twisted in absolute agony as he instantly tore her assumption to shreds. 'Don't you ever say that again. Don't you even dare think that. I love you. For fuck's sakes, I love you so much it's killing me. That's not why I stayed away!'
The monitor beside the bed bleeped frantically again, the digital screen flashing a critical red warning as her pulse spiked from the panic.
Noel didn't care about the nurse anymore. He didn't care about the boundaries. He let go of the rail and reached out, his shaking hands framing her pale face, forcing her to look directly into his eyes.
'Mel, Bowie's mother, showed up last night, Caro..out of the blue I get a text telling me she was coming to get Bowie because of everything that is going on..with you..right now...She probably smelled her fifteen minutes of fame and she showed up with her solicitor at the hotel and...she just took Bowie..nothing I could do about it...They've already left Edinburgh. They're on their way to London right now, and I couldn't stop them. And..and.now..I feel like a part of my heart has been ripped out of my chest..I..I just don't know what to do anymore..'
Caro went entirely rigid beneath his touch. The phantom heartbreak of thinking Noel wanted to leave her vanished, replaced in a split second by a cold, hollow terror that made her heart ache so hard she thought it was going to stop. She stared up into his bloodshot eyes, her mind fiercely absorbing the brutal reality of what he had just said.
'Then the choice is easily made, Noel,' Caro whispered, her voice cracking but carrying an unyielding, razor-sharp weight that cut right through the stuttering bleeps. She looked into his sad eyes, her own eyes burning with absolute certainty. 'Bowie is your daughter. She is your blood. I am not.'
Noel flinched, his chest heaving as he stared down at her, completely caught off guard by the sudden, brutal honesty of her words.
'Caro, no, I'm not leaving you..'
'Yes, you are,' she interrupted, her grip tightening on his jacket with whatever strength she had left in her trembling arms. 'You are going to walk out of this room right now, and you are going to drive to London. You do not let Mel win this. You go get your daughter back.'
Noel's jaw tightened, the sheer weight of her selflessness hitting him like a physical blow. He was trapped between the woman who had just fought hell alone and the child who was being stolen away, but looking into Caro's fierce, demanding eyes, he knew she wasn't giving him an option. She was deciding for him.
Noel didn't pull away. Instead, he shifted his weight and sat down next to her on the edge of the mattress. His fingers tangling into her hair, desperately trying to pull her close without catching the IV lines. He pressed his forehead against hers and breathed in the sterile scent of her skin.
'I can't,' he broke, the confession tearing raw and heavy from his chest. 'Caro, look at you. If I walk out that door right now, after everything...I am the bastard who abandoned you. I can't live with that. I can't look at my own reflection knowing I left you here weak and alone in a hospital bed.'
'You are saving your daughter,' Caro said.
Her voice was an eerie, flat baseline, entirely stripped of the tremor from moments before. She locked her fingers tighter into his collar, using every ounce of her remaining physical strength to hold him close, weaponizing a certainty she did not feel.
Inside, she was a hollowed-out cavern of suffocating terror. She was dying of uncertainty, paralyzed by the agonizing conviction that if he walked out that door, the silence of the motorway would give him clarity. He would realize how much easier life was without her baggage, her trauma, her broken pieces. She wanted to scream at him to stay. She wanted to beg him to put her first, just this once, to prove she wasn't just a burden he was tired of carrying. But she dared not show it. If he stayed, the resentment would eventually kill them anyway.
So, she kept her brave mask perfectly, flawlessly intact.
'Mel is running, Noel,' she urged, her whisper sharp, cutting right through his grief. 'Every second you stand here bleeding out over your own guilt, that plane or car or train gets another mile closer to London. Do you honestly think our relationship survives if you stay? Do you think you can look at me every day, knowing you traded Bowie's safety just to sit by my bed?'
Noel's eyes snapped open, dark and blazing with a desperate, heavy devotion.
'It's not about sitting by a bed,' he breathed, his grip tightening in her hair, his touch suddenly fierce, possessive. 'You almost died yesterday. Last night was hell, knowing you were here alone..I love you, Caro. I love you so very much, and the thought of leaving you like this splits my heart right down the middle.'
'I won't choose between you and Bowie,' he whispered against her skin,. 'I won't do it, Caro. I can't.'
'Yes you can and you will,' Caro cut him off, her whisper sharp, cold, and immediate. She forced her hands flat against his chest, right over his hammering heart, pushing him back with a sudden, unyielding strength. She looked straight into his eyes, her face a rigid wall of absolute bravery. 'I already told you. Bowie is your daughter. She is your blood. And blood always comes first. That little girl is scared and alone right now, missing her Dad and her brothers..'
Noel flinched, his chest heaving as he stared down at her, the brutal honesty of her words striking him like a physical blow.
'So, yes, you are leaving,' she interrupted, her grip tightening on his jacket as she used what little strength she had left. 'You are going to walk out of this room right now, you are going to get your boys from the lobby, and you are going to drive to London..Don't call me, don't text me, don't even think about me until Bowie is back home safely with you and the boys, that's all that matters.'
He swallowed hard, his jaw tightening as her refusal to break finally forced his hand, converting his despair into a dark, driving resolve. He looked at his lover, trying to read the unreadable, icy armor she had built between them
'I'm coming straight back,' Noel said, his voice dropping to a low, rough pitch that carried the weight of an unbreakable vow. 'The second she's safe, I am driving back to this room, Caro. Do you hear me?'
Caro's stomach twisted into a devastating knot of doubt, wondering if he truly meant it or if he was just leaving her with beautiful words because he had to go. But her lips didn't tremble. She gave him a single, sharp nod. 'Just go, Noel, she's waiting'
His lips pressed against hers with a raw, bruising intensity, trying to force a lifetime of devotion into a single, stolen breath. It was a kiss that belonged to a man who felt like his entire soul was being dragged out of his chest, torn between the child he had to protect and the woman he couldn't bear to leave behind.
Caro let herself drown in the kiss, just for a heartbeat, storing the memory of his touch away like a weapon against the freezing isolation she knew was coming.
Before he could finally break the physical connection, Noel leaned down one last time, his lips brushing against the shell of her ear.
'I love you,' he whispered, the words ragged, desperate, and thick with a raw devotion. 'I love you so much.'
Then, he had to force himself out of the room. He turned on his heel and forced his feet to carry him across the linoleum, the heavy clinical door swung open and then clicked shut, the sound sharp, clinical, and final in the small room.
As he walked, the tears he had managed to hold back in front of Caro finally broke free, hot and thick, tracking rapidly into the rough stubble of his jaw. He couldn't let his sons see him like this. He couldn't walk into that lobby looking like a broken man when they were counting on him to lead them, to fix this, to get Bowie back.
He swallowed down the lump of grief, but as he approached the waiting lobby, the harshness of his protective facade softened. He couldn't just be a cold machine either; Donovan and Sonny were his blood, and they were hurting, and they needed their father now more than ever.
He stepped through the doors, forcing his features to hold up for them, projecting a steady, protective warmth that anchored the room the moment he entered.
Donovan and Sonny looked up instantly. Noel didn't stop his stride, but he paused just long enough to put a reassuring hand on Donovan's shoulder, giving it a firm, grounding squeeze before looking down at Sonny with a reassuring nod. The exhaustion was etched deep into his face, but the love and determination shining in his bloodshot eyes told them everything they needed to know.
'Come on, grab your things,' Noel said, his voice low, rough, but laced with a quiet, paternal warmth that gave them no room to doubt him. 'We're driving to London.'
The minute the door of her room closed again, she lay there shivering and crying under the sterile sheets, the terrifying clarity of her own existence settled over her.
She didn't even know what she was crying for anymore. The grief was a tangled, suffocating knot in her chest, she was weeping for Noel, missing him so fiercely it felt like a physical ache, while simultaneously paralyzed by the reality of Bowie being kidnapped.
The uncertainty was a relentless poison. Now that Noel was putting the miles between them, racing back down to London while she remained entirely stuck in Scotland, the physical distance only magnified her mental spiral.
She desperately didn't want to be selfish, but the raw human need for comfort was a heavy, unavoidable weight.
Once again, she was forced to face the reality that she had been lonely her entire life, but right now, that chronic isolation had come back to bite her with a devastating, agonizing sharpness.
Six hours later, the persistent drone of the motorway finally died, replaced by the suffocating, neon-lit labyrinth of London.
Noel sat behind the wheel, his hands gripped so tightly around the steering wheel that his knuckles were stark white. His eyes were heavily shot through with red, his jaw aching from hours of unyielding, silent driving.
He missed Caro with a fierce, hollow ache that had traveled with him down every single mile of the motorway, a quiet torment looping through his mind alongside the high-stakes mission ahead.
His finger trembling slightly with a volatile mix of exhaustion and fury as he tapped on Mel's number on the media display for the twentieth time, listening to the mechanical, mocking ring.
Ring... ring... ring...
'The number you have dialed is unavailable right now..'
No answer. Not a single text showing as read, not a single call connecting. Mel had vanished off the face of the earth, weaponizing the vastness of London to keep Bowie entirely out of his reach.
Behind him, the leather of the back seat shifted. Donovan leaned forward, rubbing his tired eyes, his voice tight with exhaustion.
'Dad,' Donovan muttered, looking out at the busy London streets. 'Where are we staying tonight? Are we going home?'
Noel's jaw tightened, his gaze fixing blindly on the windshield. The mere thought of his own house sent a cold, sickening wave through his chest. It was too quiet there, too empty, and filled to the absolute brim with memories of Sara, memories he didn't have the strength to face while his world was actively tearing apart. Going back there right now would completely break him.
'No,' Noel said, his voice a low, rough rasp as he threw the car back into gear. 'We're not going home.'
Sonny looked up from his phone, his brow furrowed. 'Then where?'
Noel didn't answer immediately. He steered the car through the heavy traffic, his mind locking onto the only sanctuary he had left in this city. He pushed on the display again, bypassing Mel's contact, and quickly scrolled down.
'We're going to Uncle Liam's place,' Noel said, his tone flat and absolute, leaving no room for argument as he hit the dial button. 'He'll have space for us. And right now, we need a roof where we can plan our next move.'
