Part 112

19:00, 20 May 2026

The first pale ray of morning light cut through the gap in the heavy hotel curtains, drawing a sharp, icy line across the carpet, only illuminating the bleak reality Noel had been staring at for hours. He hadn't slept for a single second. His eyes burned, and his muscles were locked in a rigid ache from staying frozen between his sons, terrified that the slightest movement would break their fragile sleep.

In the dim, grey shadows, Donovan and Sonny were still dead to the world, their faces pale, their heavy breathing the only sound in the suffocating stillness.

Then, at exactly 6:14 AM, the phone in Noel's palm vibrated. The sudden, violent buzz felt like a gunshot in the quiet room.

Noel's heart jammed into his throat. He swiped the screen before a single ringtone could shatter the silence, bringing the phone to his ear with a trembling hand.

'Gallagher,' he whispered, his voice a raw, scraping sound.

'Mr. Gallagher, it's Dr. Aris.' The doctor's voice was clipped, heavy with the exhaustion of a brutal night shift.

Noel closed his eyes, bracing his entire body for a blow. He pressed his knuckles hard against his mouth to stop himself from shaking. 'Tell me.'

'Caroline is awake,' Dr. Aris said, letting out a long, weary breath over the line.

The words hit Noel like a physical shock, but the doctor's tone kept him from celebrating.

'I won't sugarcoat it, it was touch and go for a few hours,' the doctor continued, his voice dropping to a gravelly, serious register. 'She went through an absolute physical hell tonight. Her body went into severe shock, her temperature spiked dangerously high, and we almost lost her when the seizures started. It took everything we had to pull her back from the edge.'

A violent shudder went through Noel's chest. The air left his lungs in a ragged, silent sob that he choked back before it could escape. The imagery of Caro enduring that lonely torture while he sat in a hotel room made a sickening wave of guilt crash over him, but the sheer relief of her survival made his head spin.

'But she's awake?' Noel managed to ask, his voice cracking under the weight of it. 'She's alright?'

'The worst of the physical danger is behind us, and she is lucid, though she's completely exhausted and in an immense amount of discomfort,' the doctor explained. 'Her heart took a massive strain, but she is stable. She's still fighting, Mr. Gallagher, but she made it through the night.'

'Can I see her?'

'Yes. She's been asking for you. Once the morning shift rotates, you can come and see her.'

'Thank you,' Noel choked out, his vision blurring. 'Thank you so much, Doctor.'

He ended the call, letting his hand drop heavily into his lap. The grey morning light was getting stronger now, painting the room in sharp, cold clarity. For the first time in twelve hours, the suffocating pressure on his chest eased, just enough for him to breathe. Caro was alive. She had crawled her way back from hell.

Beside him, a soft groan broke the stillness.

Donovan stirred, his eyes fluttering open against the pale light. He blinked up at his father, his face small and exhausted. Within seconds, the memory of the night before crashed back into his mind, and his posture instantly stiffened.

'Dad?' Donovan whispered, his voice trembling with immediate dread. 'Was that Caro?'

On Noel's other side, Sonny's eyes snapped open too, alerted by the raw panic in his brother's voice. Both boys scrambled up onto their knees, staring at his face with a breathless, terrifying anxiety. They were completely still, waiting for the words that would either shatter them or save them.

Noel looked from Donovan to Sonny, seeing the raw, breathless anxiety etched into their pale faces. He opened his mouth to give them the sanitized, safe version, but the lie caught in his throat. They had already lived through the truth of what their mother had done. They knew the stakes. Looking into their desperate eyes, he realized that lying to them now would only make them feel more isolated. They deserved the truth.

'Hey,' Noel said, his voice husky and rough, but completely grounded. He reached out, wrapping one large hand around Donovan's arm and pulling Sonny close with the other, 'that was the doctor. Caro is awake.'

Donovan let out a sharp, ragged breath, but his eyes stayed locked on Noel's face, searching for the catch. 'Is she okay, Dad? Really?'

Noel swallowed hard, forcing himself to look his oldest son in the eye. 'I'm not going to lie to you. It was touch and go for a few hours. She went through an absolute physical hell last night. Her body went into shock, and the doctors had to fight really hard to pull her back from the edge.'

Sonny's eyes widened, a tear spilling over, while Donovan's posture went completely rigid.

'But,' Noel continued firmly, 'she fought her way through it. The worst of the physical danger is completely behind us now. She is stable, she is awake, and she is asking for me..for us. She made it through the night.'

Sonny let out a small, broken sob and buried his face straight into Noel's chest. Noel squeezed him tight, resting his chin on the boy's hair, while Donovan leaned his forehead against Noel's shoulder, a shaky, exhausted exhale escaping his lips. It wasn't a perfect, happy ending, but it was real, and the crushing weight of the unknown finally lifted from the room.

Then, the phone in Noel's hand buzzed.

It wasn't a call this time. It was a single, heavy vibration of a text message.

Noel's chest tightened instantly. He lifted his head slightly, keeping his arms locked around his sons, and looked down at the screen illuminated in the grey morning light.

The notification across the top read: Mel.

Noel's thumb swiped the screen to unlock it, his heart hammering violently against his ribs as he read the few lines of text that instantly shattered the fragile peace of the morning.

Mel: We are going back to London. This whole situation is toxic and unsafe for a little girl. Do not follow us, and do not meddle in this. I am taking care of Bowie now.

Noel stared at the words, a cold, furious numbness washing over him. London. Mel wasn't just shielding his daughter; she was cutting him out entirely, treating him like he was part of the hazard.

With shaking fingers, he immediately typed back, his thumbs flying across the glass.

'She is my daughter too, Mel. Do not do this. I need to hear Bowie's voice. Put her on the phone right now.'

He hit send, his eyes burning as he waited for the reply. Nothing. He didn't even wait for the typing bubbles; he hit the call button, bringing the phone back to his ear. It rang once, twice, and then went straight to voicemail.

He called again. Voicemail. She was intentionally ignoring him.

A dark, dangerous frustration flared up in Noel's chest, mixing with the raw exhaustion of the night. He lowered the phone, his jaw clenched so tightly it ached.

Donovan, watching his father's face completely harden into a mask of pure tension, leaned in closer. The hard-earned relief from moments ago instantly vanished from his eyes. 'Dad? What's wrong? Is Bowie okay?'

Noel looked down at Donovan and Sonny, his heart breaking all over again. He had just promised them honesty, but now he had to tell them that while Caro was waking up in a clinic, their little sister was being flown across the country against his will.

'Listen to me,' Noel said, his voice dropping to a low, tight whisper. He looked directly into Donovan's panicked eyes, then down at Sonny. 'Bowie is okay. She's safe. But Mel... Mel just texted me. She's taking her back to London. She thinks it's too dangerous here with everything that is going on in our lives.'

Donovan's face went completely pale, his chest heaving as the shock hit him. 'What? No, she can't do that! Dad, she can't take Bowie away!'

Sonny's eyes welled with fresh tears, his small hands clutching tightly at Noel's shirt. 'Is she taking her away forever?'

'No. She isn't,' Noel said, his voice hardening into steel as the grief inside him completely turned to rage. 'I am not letting her do this. I promise you.'

The rejection from Mel, her refusal to let him even hear his daughter's voice, snapped the final thread of his restraint. He couldn't just sit here anymore.

Noel abruptly stood up, untangling himself from his sons. The sudden, aggressive movement made the boys flinch on the floor, their wide, exhausted eyes tracking him as he broke away from them and began pacing the small hotel room like a caged animal.

He pulled up his contacts, his eyes burning with fury as he scrolled until he hit his lawyer's name. The man hadn't called him back all night despite the escalating chaos, leaving Noel entirely exposed while his family was torn apart. He was done waiting.

He put the phone to his ear, his jaw clenched so tightly his teeth ached, listening to the line ring. If he had to file an emergency injunction, flag Mel at the airport, or tear the city apart himself to stop her from taking Bowie, he would, and his legal team was going to start moving right this second.

The line rang four times, each tone stoking the fire in Noel's chest, before a groggy, gravelly voice finally cut through.

'Noel? It's seven in the morning, what's..'

'She's taking her,' Noel interrupted, his voice a lethal, vibrating growl as he paced past the hotel window. He didn't care that he had woken the man. He didn't care about the hour. 'Mel is at the airport. She's taking Bowie back to London right now. She's ignoring my texts, she's blocking my calls, and she is freezing me out of my own daughter's life. I need an emergency injunction, and I need it five minutes ago. Block the flight. Do whatever you have to do.'

There was a heavy pause on the other end, followed by the sound of rustling sheets and a sharp sigh as the lawyer sat up, forcing himself awake.

'Noel, calm down and listen to me,' the lawyer said, his voice instantly switching into a cautious, deeply professional tone. 'We will file the emergency paperwork first thing this morning. We will do absolutely everything we can to contest this, I promise you. But you need to understand the legal reality here...Mel is still Bowie's mother.'

Noel stopped dead in his tracks. The cold morning light hit his face, exposing the raw, dangerous hollows under his eyes. 'I don't give a damn whose mother she is. She is taking my little girl across the country without my consent.'

'Legally, unless there is an active, court-ordered custody agreement explicitly restricting travel, a biological parent traveling with their child isn't committing a crime,' the lawyer explained gently, though the words felt like a succession of blows to Noel's chest. 'If she claims she is removing the child from a volatile situation for her safety, especially with everything going on with your ex-wife right now, a judge won't grant an immediate border halt. We have to build a case. It's going to take time.'

'I don't have time!' Noel roared, slamming his hand against the wall.

Donovan and Sonny flinched at the sound, watching their father unravel with a terrifying, breathless anxiety. Noel caught sight of them in his periphery, and the sickening realization of what he was doing forced him to drop his voice back to a harsh, lethal whisper.

'She's on a flight right now, or she's getting on one' Noel hissed into the receiver, his knuckles white around the phone. 'Are you telling me I just have to sit here and let her fly off with my daughter?'

'Noel, listen to me,' the lawyer said, his voice dropping into a firm, unyielding tone that cut through Noel's panic. 'If you get in your car, race to that airport, or cause a scene, Mel's lawyers will use it against you. They will paint you as volatile and unsafe, especially with the chaos surrounding you. Do not follow her to London right now. You will ruin your custody case before it even begins.'

Noel's chest heaved, a dangerous, suffocating heat rising in his throat. 'So I just do nothing?'

'No. You show the court you are the stable parent,' the lawyer instructed sharply. 'You told me that Caro is in the clinic because she protected your family. Go to the clinic. Be there for her recovery. Take care of Donovan and Sonny. Let me handle the emergency filings. Show the judges you are the anchor here, not the storm.'

The line went dead before Noel could argue.

He slowly lowered the phone, his hand trembling so hard the phone clicked against his ruby ring. The silence in the hotel room was absolute, broken only by the ragged sound of his own breathing.

He turned around. Donovan and Sonny were looking up at him with wide, terrified eyes. They had just found out their little sister was gone, and they had just watched their father slam his fist into a wall. The guilt hit Noel like a physical blow. He had promised to keep them safe, to hold them together, and right now, he was failing.

Noel closed his eyes for a split second, forcing the violent rage down. When he opened them, he walked back over to them, his voice cracking but resolute.

'Go and get ready,' Noel whispered, reaching out to wipe a stray tear from Sonny's cheek. 'We're going to the clinic. We're going to see Caro.'
