Part 103
00:19, 11 May 2026Every time Caroline lifted her coffee cup, she could feel Liam's gaze through the glass of the terrace doors. He wasn't even pretending anymore. His eyes seemed to look directly at the chemical lie thrumming in her veins.
Noel followed Bowie's gaze back to the window, his jaw tightening as he watched his brother stare at Caro again. Noel turned back to her, his hand sliding off the table to rest heavily on her thigh. The contact was meant to be intimate, but Caroline felt a jolt of electricity that made her pupils flare. He leaned in closer, his nose almost brushing hers, searching her eyes with a frightening intensity.
'What did you two really talk about back there in the hall? What the fuck is going on between you two..tell me' he whispered, his thumb pressing a little too hard into her skin. 'And don't tell me it was just the Dublin schedule. I know my brother, and I know he's absolutely livid with you right now..and I need to know why.'
Caroline forced herself not to blink, staring into Noel's blue eyes while Liam's shadow loomed behind him on the glass. The powder made her feel invincible, but the silence from the terrace felt like a ticking bomb.
'He's really just worried about the Dublin leg, Noel,' she lied, her voice a perfect, melodic trill. 'That's all.'
She leaned forward and captured Noel's lips in a scorching kiss, a desperate move to overwrite his suspicion with desire. When she pulled back, she saw Liam stop his pacing on the terrace. He was staring right at them, his face a mask of pure, unadulterated disgust at her manipulation.
'Can you take care of the kids for a bit?' Caroline breathed, her heart hammering a frantic rhythm against her ribs. 'I'll go talk to him. I need a smoke anyway.'
But as Noel began to cut a pancake for Bowie, his eyes didn't leave Caroline as she pushed away the untouched plate of food and stood up, biting her lip, as she walked over to the terrace like she was walking up to her execution.
The heavy glass door slid open with a soft, expensive hiss, and the cool Edinburgh air hit Caroline's face like a slap. It was a sharp contrast to the humid, syrup-scented warmth of the breakfast room. Liam didn't turn around as she approached; he stayed leaned against the stone balustrade, his knuckles white as he gripped the railing, staring out at the skyline.
'You've got a lot of nerve, Caro,' he rasped, his voice barely audible over the wind. 'Coming out here after that little performance with my brother. Do you think a kiss is going to make the truth disappear?'
Caroline stood a few feet away, fumbling with her lighter, her movements precise and elegant, though her heart was thumping so hard she was sure he could see it. She took a long, shaky drag of her cigarette, the smoke curling around her head like a shroud.
'He's happy, Liam,' she whispered, staring at the back of his head. 'For the first time in months, he's actually happy. Why would you want to destroy that?'
Liam spun around then, his face contorted with a mixture of pity and rage. 'Happy? He's in love with an addict and he doesn't even see it! You're not even here right now. You're floating on a chemical cloud while he's making plans for a future with a woman who's one bad dose away from a body bag.' He took a menacing step closer, lowering his voice to a jagged whisper. 'I saw your eyes when he touched you. You didn't even feel him. You just felt the rush.'
Caroline flinched, the cigarette trembling between her fingers. Through the glass, she could see Noel. He wasn't looking at Bowie anymore. He was sitting perfectly still, his fork forgotten about, his gaze fixed on the two of them through the pane, his expression dark and unreadable.
'Liam, stop it, what's wrong with you? the two of you have spent most of your life stoned and high as kites, and you're calling the kettle black?? It's not like I asked for this, I was forced, this stuff..was forced on me, remember?! I told you, I'm handling it,' she hissed, her cool facade finally starting to fray at the edges.
'Oh fuck off Caro, you're not handling anything,' Liam countered, leaning in until he was in her space. 'Rob turned you into a puppet and an addict, and you're still letting him pull the strings even when he's in prison? If you don't tell Noel the truth by the time we leave for Dublin, I will. I won't let you take my brother down with you.'
He walked past her, his shoulder clipping hers intentionally, leaving her alone on the terrace. Caroline stood frozen, the smoke burning her lungs, as she realized Noel was now standing up on the other side of the glass, heading straight for the door.
The heavy glass door slid open with a sharp hiss, and Noel stepped onto the terrace. The snappy Edinburgh wind caught his jacket, but his gaze was far colder. He took the cigarette from between her fingers and took a long drag before he gave it back to her, the smoke curling around both their heads as he walked straight into her space, his presence looming and absolute.
'What was that?' he asked, his voice dropping into that low, dangerous register that usually preceded an explosion. 'Liam just walked past me looking like he wanted to put his fist through a wall, you two were arguing, what the fuck happened?'
Caroline forced her fingers to stay rigid, flicking an ash into the wind with practiced elegance. 'It's nothing, Noel. We just..had a disagreement about the logistics. He's on edge. It's alright, nothing for you or anyone to worry about.'
'Don't lie to me, Caro,' he snapped, stepping even closer until he was inches from her face, his eyes drilling into hers looking for the truth. 'I watched the two of you through that glass. I saw how he was looming over you. I saw the way you flinched. This wasn't about Edinburgh or Dublin. This was about us.'
He reached out, his hand wrapping around her wrist, not painfully, but with a firm, grounded weight that made her realize just how much she was floating. His eyes scanned her face, tracking the unnatural stillness of her features and the way her pupils didn't react to the shifting morning light.
'My brother is a lot of things, but he's loyal to a fault. He wouldn't look at me with that kind of pity unless he thought I was walking into some kind of problem,' Noel whispered, his voice thick with a mix of hurt and burgeoning demand.
Caroline stared into the blue eyes of the man she loved, the chemicals in her blood screaming at her to lie, to charm, to deflect. But the bitter taste of Liam's ultimatum, Dublin, was a jagged pill she couldn't swallow. She was trapped between the man who wanted to save her and the man who was ready to expose her.
'Noel, please...' she breathed, her voice a fragile thread as she fought to keep her mask from shattering right there under the grey Scottish sky. 'And I'm not? You think I'm not loyal to you? is that what you're saying?'
Noel didn't explode. Instead, he went quiet, his gaze softening into something far harder to withstand than anger: a raw, quiet concern. He released her wrist and placed his hands on either side of her face. The softness of his thumbs on her face stung worse than a strike; she just wanted to surrender and break down in his embrace.
'Of course you're loyal, Caro,' he said, his raspy voice barely audible over the sound of her own heart. 'I love you more than anything else, more than life itself. I don't have the words to tell you what you mean to me, I would be lost without you.' He searched her eyes, but Caroline found she could barely hold his gaze. The chemical hum in her blood suddenly felt like a cheap, thin barrier between them.
'I'm asking you simply as your man,' he continued, his voice almost pleading now. 'Are you in some kind of trouble? Is there something going on that I need to pull you out of? Because if you give me the truth now, we fix it together. No questions, no judgment. Just us.'
Caroline felt the words burning in her ears. For a split second, she wanted to confess everything, the drugs, her loss of control, the unprocessed trauma, her loneliness, the loss of trust in herself. But the shame was stronger than her need for freedom. She couldn't bring herself to shatter the image he had of her.
She swallowed hard and slowly shook her head. 'There's nothing, Noel. Really.' she whispered, her voice steadying as the lie took root. 'I told you, I think we're all just feeling the stress a bit, and Liam even more so, I think I've said something to rub him the wrong way, so I'll go up there and apologize in a bit..'
Noel didn't blink. He stayed there, his hands still framing her face, but his thumbs stopped their rhythmic stroking. The tenderness in his eyes didn't vanish, but it was joined by a sobering, quiet clarity. He looked at her not just as the woman he loved, but as a man who had spent decades navigating the jagged edges of his brother's moods and his own intuition.
'Right, ok' he said softly. He slowly let his hands drop from her face. The loss of his warmth felt like a sudden plunge into an arctic sea.
Noel took another step back, his expression smoothing into a mask of weary acceptance. He reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone, which had just begun to vibrate.
'I have to take this,' he said, his voice flat but not unkind. He gestured vaguely toward the cigarette in her hand. 'Finish your smoke, Babe. Take a minute to clear your head. I'll be inside.'
He didn't wait for her answer. He turned and walked back toward the hotel entrance, his gait steady and purposeful. Caroline watched him go, a wave of nauseating relief washing over her. She thought she had won. She thought the lie had held.
But inside the lobby, Noel didn't answer the phone. He kept walking, bypassing the elevators and taking the stairs two at a time. His heart was a heavy thud in his chest, not of anger, but of a cold, gnawing suspicion . He reached the third floor and moved down the carpeted hallway until he stood outside Liam's room.
He didn't hesitate. He gave a firm, sharp knock.
Inside, Liam was standing on the balcony of his suite, smoking a cigarette as well. His nerves were frayed, his mind still back on that terrace with Caroline. When he heard the knock, he assumed it was Caroline coming back to finish their argument, to beg him to not betray her, one last time. He yanked the door open, his face set in a hard, defensive scowl.
The air seemed to leave his lungs as he stared at his brother instead of the woman he expected. He stood frozen in the doorway, his hand still gripped tightly around the handle, his eyes wide with a mixture of shock and sudden, paralyzing dread.
Noel didn't wait for an invitation. He stepped into the room, his presence filling the hotel suite and making it feel suddenly claustrophobic. He closed the door behind him with a soft, final click.
Noel stayed anchored against the door, his arms crossed tight over his chest, his eyes never leaving Liam's face. The silence in the hotel suite was deafening, the kind of quiet that precedes a landslide.
'Right..what the hell is going on between you and Caro?' Noel repeated, his voice low, steady, and vibrating with a demand that Liam had never been able to refuse.
Liam didn't answer at first. He turned back toward the balcony, staring out at the grey Edinburgh skyline, the cigarette trembling between his fingers. His mind was a battlefield. He could hear Caroline's voice on the terrace, the desperate, fragile thread of her plea for him to stay silent.
'It's just the move, Noel,' Liam muttered, his back still turned. 'She's stressed. I'm stressed. We're all just..on edge.'
Noel didn't move an inch. 'Don't lie to me, Liam. I've known you your whole life. You don't look at someone with that kind of raw pity because of "stress." And she doesn't flinch away from you unless you're holding something over her. Now, I'm asking you as your brother, what the fuck's going on?'
Liam closed his eyes, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the handle of the sliding balcony door. He thought of his loyalty to Caroline, of the way she had been forced into this nightmare by Rob, of how she was just trying to survive the ghosts in her head. But then he looked at the reflection of his brother in the glass, Noel, the man who would walk through fire for her, the man who was currently building a future on a foundation of shattering lies.
'Liam, look at me,' Noel said, his voice softer now but with an undertone that left no room for more lies. 'I saw the way she looked at you. I saw the fear. If you have even an ounce of respect and loyalty left for me, you'll tell me right now what's going on.'
Liam realized he couldn't protect her and save Noel at the same time. His loyalty to his brother, the man who had always caught him when he fell, finally won out.
Liam lowered his head, his chin on his chest. The silence became almost palpable. Once again, he thought of Caroline's plea on the terrace, of how traumatized she was by everything that bastard Rob had done to her. He didn't want to betray her. He didn't want to be the one to shatter his brother's fragile peace. But as he stood there, he realized he was letting Noel walk straight into the abyss if he stayed silent now.
'I didn't want it to be me, Noel,' Liam finally whispered, his voice broken. 'I warned her. I threatened her, hoping she'd go to you herself. But she's too far gone. She's too afraid.'
He looked up, his eyes red and full of pity. 'This is not about Dublin, Noel. And it's not about us. It's about what Rob did to her while he held her captive.'
Noel turned white, his jaw clenched tight. 'What do you mean?'
'He destroyed her, Noel. And not just with his hands,' Liam said, the words coming out now like a bitter stream. 'He forced her..he got her on drugs to keep her quiet, you know that..but with the gear he used on her, she never stood a chance..she's still using, Noel. Every time she slips away to the bathroom, every time she says she "just needs a moment to herself"...she's using.'
Liam took a step toward his brother, his hands raised in a plea. 'She's doing it because she can't handle the pain, Noel. She's terrified of you finding out..She's trying to keep up appearances for you, while she's slowly dying inside.'
The world around Noel seemed to fall silent. The erratic behaviour, the way she avoided his gaze..It was Rob's poison still flowing through her veins.
