Part 79

19:02, 15 April 2026

Noel didn't say a word. He simply reached for her hand and led her through the double doors of the living area into the master bedroom. The heavy curtains were already drawn, the room bathed in a soft, amber glow that felt worlds away from the harsh spotlights of Heaton Park.

But as the door clicked shut, the silence of the room didn't bring peace. Instead, it made the ringing in Caro's ears louder. She stood in the center of the room, her breath coming in shallow hitches. She felt like a live wire, her muscles so tight they were vibrating. She was pacing a small circle, her hands knotting together, her mind still screaming with the image of that text message.

'Caro, babe, just try and calm down' Noel murmured, his voice low and raspy as he moved toward her.

'Easier said than done..' she gasped, spinning to face him. She pulled the phone from her pocket and shoved it into his hand, her fingers trembling violently. 'Read it. Just read it so you know why I'm losing my mind.'

Noel's face hardened as his eyes scanned the screen. His jaw tightened so hard a muscle pulsed in his cheek, and for a second, she thought he might actually crush the phone. But when he looked back at her, his expression shifted from fury to a profound, aching concern. He dropped the phone onto the bed and took a step toward her.

'He's not getting near you,' Noel promised, his voice a low growl. 'I've got people at every..'

'Stop it! No more plans! No more 'people'!' Caro interrupted, her voice cracking. She stepped into him, her hands slamming against his chest, not to push him away, but to find something solid to hold onto. 'I'm so pent up, Noel. I feel like I'm going to explode. My skin feels too tight, and my head is spinning, and it's like..I can't be in my own body right now.'

She looked up at him, her eyes wide and desperate, shining with unshed tears. 'I need it out of my system. The fear, the anger, the adrenaline..all of it. I'm desperate, Noel. Please.'

She grabbed his wrists and pulled his hands toward her, pressing them firmly against her skin as her mouth crashed into his.

She was a storm of pent-up energy, her body trembling with a vibration that felt like it might shake her apart. She needed to overwrite the image of the car crash, the rape, the stitches, and that haunting text message with something raw and undeniable.

Noel stumbled back a step, his hands instinctively coming up to catch her waist. He returned the kiss with equal intensity for a moment, but as she began to pull at his clothes with a feverish haste, he felt the frantic skip of her heart against his chest. He realized she wasn't just wanting him; she was trying to outrun another breakdown.

Gently he gripped her wrists and slowed his pace, pulling back just an inch to catch his breath and look into her eyes. 'Caro...wait, babe. Just..'

'No,' she gasped, her voice raw and breaking. She wrenched her hands free and grabbed the front of his shirt, pulling him back toward her. Her eyes were dark, unfocused, and swimming with a desperate, electric need. 'Don't stop. Don't think. I can't think anymore, Noel. I need you!'

She shoved her body against his again, her hands moving with renewed urgency, her breath hot against his neck. When he tried to steady her again, fearful that she was just acting out of pure shock, she looked him dead in the eye, the "Tour Manager" long gone, replaced by a woman being pushed to her absolute limit.

'just fuck me, Noel,' she whispered, the words jagged and blunt, cutting through the silence of the room. 'Right now. I need to feel something that isn't fear. I need to get this out of me. Please.'

The sheer honesty of her desperation shattered the last of his hesitation. He saw that she didn't need a conversation or a gentle apology; she needed a tether to the present.

He didn't say another word. He reached out, his hand sliding into her hair to tilt her head back, and crushed his mouth to hers in a way that signaled he was finally letting go, too. He swept her up, the weight of the outside world, the police, the crowds, and the shadow of Rob finally being drowned out by the sound of their own frantic breathing. Caro felt her back connect to the wall, and she didn't care if it was harder than he intended, her hands pushed his shirt up at the waist and started to unbuckle his belt.

The sound of his belt buckle hitting the floor was sharp, a metallic ring that punctuated the heavy silence of the suite. Caro didn't stop; her fingers were frantic, fumbling with the button of his jeans while her mouth stayed locked onto his. She was seeking heat, seeking friction, seeking anything that would burn away the memory of the icy fear of that text message.

Noel let out a low, guttural growl against her lips, his hands sliding down from her hair to her thighs. He hiked her up, her legs wrapping around his waist instinctively, and pinned her firmly against the wall. The impact was solid, grounding, and exactly what she needed, to be held so tightly that there was no room for her to tremble.

'Babe..' he muttered into the crook of her neck, his breath hitching as her hands finally found skin. 'Stop talking, I don't want to hear it, I just need to feel you' her teeth tugged at his bottom lip.

He didn't give her a chance to overthink or retreat. He moved with a raw, focused urgency, his hands steadying her even as his own self-control started to fray. As he entered her, a sharp gasp escaped her lips, her head falling back against the wall. The world narrowed down to this, the friction of their bodies, the rhythm, and the sheer, overwhelming reality of him.

It was a beautiful, desperate kind of violence. Every hard thrust was an answer to the fear she'd been carrying, Noel's way of reclaiming her from the ghosts he'd tried to hide. Caro clutched at his shoulders, her nails digging into the skin through his shirt, her eyes squeezed shut as the tension that had been coiling in her stomach for days finally began to snap and unravel.

In the dark of the room, with only the muffled hum of the city below, the "Tour Manager" and the "Rock Star" were gone. There was only the sound of skin on skin and the frantic pace of two people trying to outrun a nightmare.

When his release finally hit her, it wasn't just physical. It was a sob that got caught in her throat, a total collapse of the walls she'd built. Noel didn't let her go. He kept her pinned there, his forehead resting against hers, both of them breathing as if they'd just finished a marathon.

As the final tremors of the release faded, the atmosphere in the room shifted instantly. The heat that had nearly consumed them was replaced by a clinical silence.

Noel slowly lowered her legs, his hands sliding mechanically from her hips. The moment her feet touched the carpet, Caro broke all physical contact. There was no lingering embrace, no soft transition to the bed, no whispered words of comfort.

Noel stepped back, his chest still heaving, his skin damp with sweat. He looked at her, searching for a trace of the woman who had just been clinging to him in desperation, but he found only a closed door. The intimacy had evaporated as quickly as steam; to him, it felt hollow, almost like a transaction, a primitive exchange to flush the toxic adrenaline out of her system.

Caro brushed a strand of hair from her face with a cold, efficient motion. Her eyes were back to being those of the Tour Manager: sharp, dry, and completely disconnected from the emotion of a moment ago. The vulnerability of her in the trailer felt like a lifetime away.

'I'm going to take a shower,' she said. Her voice was flat, devoid of any resonance or warmth. It cut deeper than a scream.

Noel watched her walk away, his heartbeat slowing down. 'Caro, wait..can we just..'

She stopped at the bathroom door but didn't turn around. Her shoulders were squared, the armor fully restored. 'There's nothing to talk about, Noel.'

The bathroom door clicked shut behind her. A second later, the sound of the shower was relentless, a dull roar that seemed to mock the absolute silence in the bedroom, washing away the last traces of their intimacy.

Noel stood paralyzed, his hands still trembling slightly, feeling the cold air of the air conditioning settle on his overheated skin. He looked down at the floor, at the heap of black clothes and his own discarded belt, and felt a wave of nausea. Had he alienated her so deeply that she had used him as a human sedative, a way to numb herself before locking him out again?

Inside the bathroom, Caro leaned her forehead against the cold tiles, letting the near-scalding water beat down on her back. She wasn't washing away the scent of him or the evidence of the brutal and raunchy number they just did; she was trying to wash away the feeling of being hunted. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the words on her phone. The "poison" hadn't left her system; she had just buried it under a layer of ice.

Ten minutes later, the water stopped.

Noel was sitting on the edge of the bed, his head in his hands, when the door opened. Caro stepped out, wrapped in a thick white hotel robe, her hair damp and slicked back. She didn't look at him. She walked straight to the vanity, picked up her radio and her phone, and began checking for updates as if the last twenty minutes had been nothing more than a business meeting.

'The Police hasn't confirmed his location yet. I should go down to the lobby to talk to them' she said, her voice professional and terrifyingly steady.

Noel stood up, his voice cracking. 'Caro, stop. Just stop for a second. You can't just..you can't walk out of here like we didn't just happen. I know I fucked up with the secret, but don't do this. Don't turn into a machine.'

She finally looked at him, and for a split second, the ice cracked. Her eyes were rimmed with red, and the stitches on her cheek looked angry and raw in the soft light.

'Right now, I'm even too terrified to breathe, Noel..' she already turned toward the door, her hand on the handle. But Noel quickly walked up to her, stopping her 'Caro..stop, please..come here' he put his hand over hers, leading her away from the door. 'I'll call a doctor..I..' she tried to push his hands off her 'No..no doctor..I'm just..I..' she stammered 'I can't..I don't want..'.

He pushed back against her and pulled her against his chest, 'Stop..just fuckin' stop' he growled in her ear as the dam broke and big tears started rolling down her cheeks. He finally felt her body give in to him and he quickly scooped her up and carried her to the bed.

'It's alright,' he murmured into her damp hair as he gently put her down on the kingsize bed, and crawled in next to her. 'The doors are locked, the security is outside, and I'm right here. You don't have to be the manager right now. You don't have to be anything.' He held her as tight as he could and let her cry, pushing his lips on the top of her head.

Caro's fingers curled around his biceps, her face buried in the crook of his neck as the jagged sobs began to level out into exhausted, rhythmic hitches. Noel knew the world was still waiting outside, the police, the press, and the shadow of Rob, but for this moment, the only thing that mattered was the steady, slowing heartbeat against his chest.

He pressed a lingering kiss to her temple, tasting the salt of her tears. 'We'll fix it,' he whispered, more to himself than her. 'All of it. I promise.'

'No, we won't and you know it, Noel..' she slowly lifted her head as her eyes locked with his 'He's not gonna stop, not this time..Maybe I should just leave..instead of putting you all in danger'.

The shift in her gaze, from the hollow stare of a 'machine' to this weary, heartbreakingly honest clarity, hit Noel harder than any of her earlier coldness. He didn't let go; if anything, his grip tightened, his fingers splaying across her back as if he could physically anchor her to him.

'Don't you dare,' he said, his voice dropping to a low, rough command that wasn't born of anger, but of sheer desperation. 'Don't you dare talk about leaving like you're the problem here. You aren't the danger, Caro. He is.'

He shifted, propping himself up on one elbow so he could look down at her properly, his thumb gently brushing a stray, damp hair away from the stitches on her cheek.

'You think you're protecting us by running?' he asked softly. 'You're the heart of this entire tour. You're the heart of me. You can't walk out, I won't let you'.

'Noel, listen to me,' she whispered, her voice gaining a frantic edge. 'The police..they're always a step behind. They talk about "profiles" and "procedures," but they don't know Rob. I do. Maybe..maybe the only way to end this is for me to stop hiding. I could tell them I'll meet him. I'll give him what he wants, a confrontation, just to get him out of the shadows and into a room maybe then he will give the police a reason to never let him out on bail ever again.'

Noel's expression hardened instantly, his jaw tightening so much it looked like it might snap. 'Are you insane? You're talking about being bait!!'

Her hands tightened around his arms. 'I couldn't live with myself if he came after you, Noel..or the boys and Bowie. If he ever..if even a hair on their heads was touched because I was too much of a coward to face him..I couldn't live with myself'

Noel's breath hitched, the raw desperation in her voice cutting through him like a blade. He felt the frantic pull of her hands, the way she was trying to negotiate her own safety away just to buy a sense of security for his family.

'Oh stop it!' he yelled, the sound echoing sharply against the cold walls of the suite.

The raw violence of her suggestion, that she was a disposable piece of bait, that her life was a fair trade for his peace of mind, snapped something inside him. It wasn't anger at her; it was a terrifying, helpless fury at the situation, at Rob..

Noel instantly let go of her and got out of the bed. The sudden movement left the mattress vibrating in his wake. He couldn't stay close to her; the urge to shake her into focus and the urge to crush her against him were warring so violently in his chest that he felt like he was going to explode.

He paced to the middle of the room and then turned back toward her, his eyes wild with a protective rage.

'Don't you ever say that to me again!' he barked, pointing a trembling finger toward the bed where she sat, looking small and fragile in the oversized robe.

'You're not thinking straight,' he said, his voice cracking. 'You're in shock, or..I don't even know. But you're not confronting him, I'm not having it and that's final!'

'Noel..don't..' her plea to stop was interrupted by a knock on the door.

Noel stopped his pacing abruptly and slowly opened the door. Liam stood there, his face a mask of unnatural calm that contrasted sharply with the frantic energy of the suite. He stepped inside slowly, his eyes instantly scanning the disarray, the hastily taken off clothes and belt on the floor, the damp towels, the palpable scent of sex and despair.

His gaze drifted over to Noel, 'Hasn't she had enough abuse thrown at her for one day?' Liam asked quietly, his eyes narrowing at his brother. 'D'you really think barking at her is going to help? I could bloody hear you yelling from the other end of the corridor.'

Noel opened his mouth to snap back, but the weight of Liam's stare silenced him. Without waiting for a retort, Liam turned toward Caroline sitting up on the bed.

'Listen,' Liam said, his voice dropping to a gentle murmur. 'The police are here. They've got some information, some news about Rob. They want to talk to you and they've set themselves up in a quiet room just down the hall. It's private, Caro. No crew, no cameras. Is it okay with you if we go down there to meet them?'

Caro looked from Liam's steady gaze to Noel's tormented expression. The silence in the suite shifted, the air thick with the realization that the world was closing in.

'I'll get dressed,' she whispered, the "machine" finally clicking back into place.
