Part 61
09:05, 25 April 2026The grey Manchester light didn't burst into the room; it bled in slowly, filtering through the heavy curtains of the hotel suite. The only sound was the low hum of the climate control and the steady, synchronized rhythm of their breathing.
Noel had been awake for an hour. He lay there, staring at the ceiling, feeling the weight of Caroline tucked against his side. His arm was draped possessively over her waist, his thumb absentmindedly tracing the curve of her hip, but his mind was already miles away, the soundcheck at Heaton Park, his lawyers, the absolute bloodbath that was his divorce. The tabloids were probably already hitting the stands with fresh quotes from Sara, next to him his phone was already vibrating
Caroline stirred, a small sigh escaping her as she pressed her face deeper into the crook of his arm. The scent of him, soap, and the warm, lingering musk of their first night together, was a grounding reality.
'You're thinking,' she murmured, her voice thick with sleep. She didn't open her eyes, but she tightened her hold on his chest. 'I can hear your brain whirring from here, Gallagher.'
Noel let out a short, huffed breath that was more of a tired rasp than a laugh. He leaned down, pressing a lingering, almost desperate kiss to her temple.
'Always thinkin', babe,' he muttered, his Manchester accent heavy and gravelly in the morning quiet. He pulled her closer, his hand sliding to the small of her back as if trying to shield her from the day ahead. 'Usually it's about the setlist or which guitar is gonna go out of tune first. But this morning...'
He trailed off, his thumb stalling. For a man who usually had a sharp comeback for everything, the silence in the room felt fragile. Outside this door, he was the rockstar in the middle of a high-profile war, a man whose private life was public property. But here, she was his PA, the woman who saw the cracks in the armor, and now, she was the person he'd finally crossed the line with.
'But this morning?' she prompted softly, tracing a thumb over his nipple.
Noel caught her hand, bringing her knuckles to his lips for a firm, lingering kiss. His eyes, clear and uncharacteristically vulnerable, met hers. 'This morning I'm wonderin' how many people I'd have to sack to just stay in this bed with you for another week. Because once we open those curtains, the circus starts again, doesn't it?'
He gave her one of his signature smirks, but it didn't quite hide the exhaustion. The tour, the gigs in his hometown, and the legal battle were waiting, but for this one stolen moment, he just wanted to be the man who belonged to her.
The heavy vibration of the phone on the nightstand felt like a physical intrusion, a jarring reminder that the world didn't care about their sanctuary. Noel didn't reach for it. He couldn't, not yet.
'The circus never really stops' Caroline whispered, finally opening her eyes. She saw the tension in the set of his jaw, the way his gaze flickered toward the phone before anchoring back on her. She knew the schedule better than he did; she was the one who usually kept the wolves at bay. But today, the roles felt blurred.
Noel shifted, rolling onto his side to face her fully, his forehead dropping against hers. 'It's different today. Everything's louder in Manchester. The ghosts, the press, the lot of 'em. And then there's Sara...' He spat the name with a bitterness that tasted like ash, but his grip on Caroline's waist remained tender. 'She's gonna have a field day if she and Henderson find out about this. She'll turn you into another headline before we've even had a coffee.'
Caroline reached up, her fingers threading through the messy salt-and-pepper strands of his hair. 'Then we don't tell them. Not yet. Like you said...oh fuck..I don't know..I'll deal with all that later, but for now while we're here, let's make ourselves believe that we let them have the war, Noel. They don't get to have this.'
A ghost of a real smile touched his lips, not the smirk he gave the tabloids, but something private. 'You're far too good at your job, you know that? Keeping me in line even when we're naked.' He sighed, the weight of the day finally forcing him to move. He reached over, grabbing the vibrating phone and glancing at the screen with a grimace. 'It's Liam. Probably wants to know if I've jumped off a bridge or if I'm ready for Heaton Park.'
He looked back at her, his expression darkening with a sudden, fierce intensity. 'Last night... it wasn't just a 'one-off', I'm in it for the long haul, you know that, right?'
Caroline felt the air leave her lungs, the weight of his words hitting harder than the noise of the world outside. For a second, the phone's vibration was the only heartbeat in the room. She looked at him, really looked at him. 'The long haul, Gallagher? Well you should be, since you told me you love me, twice last night' she echoed softly, a heartfelt smile playing on her lips. She moved her hand from his hair to his cheek, her palm rough against his morning stubble. 'You realize that makes me the most overqualified and compromised PA in history, right?'
Noel didn't laugh. He leaned into her touch, his eyes boring into hers with a sincerity that made her heart ache. Noel's eyes narrowed, his signature dry wit flickering for a second, but it didn't break the intensity. He watched the way her shoulders shook with that soft, nervous giggle, the way she tried to brush off the weight of his confession like it was just another line in a rock song.
'Oh, you think it's funny, do you?' he muttered, a rough, affectionate growl undercutting his words. He didn't pull away; instead, he shifted, pinning her more firmly against the mattress with the weight of his body, his face inches from hers. 'You think I was just talkin' because the lights were low and the sex was phenomenal?'
He caught her chin between his thumb and forefinger, forcing her to meet his gaze. The playful smirk he usually wore was nowhere to be found.
'I don't say that lightly, Caroline. I've spent thirty years dodging that word like a fuckin' landmine, especially lately' He softened his grip, his thumb tracing the line of her lower lip. 'I said it because it's the only true thing I've felt since this whole divorce circus started. You can giggle all you want to keep the walls up, babe, but I meant every bloody word. Both times. And probably the three other times I whispered it while you were asleep.'
The phone on the nightstand gave one final, pathetic vibration before falling silent, but Noel didn't blink. He was waiting for her to see that the 'Chief' was surrendering.
'So,' he whispered, his breath warm against her mouth. 'You done laughing? Or do I have to say it a third time just to make sure it sticks?'
Caroline felt the playful deflection die in her throat. The heat of him wasn't just physical anymore; it was the raw, unvarnished truth of a man who usually dealt in sarcasm and stone-cold logic.
She swallowed hard, her hand sliding from his cheek to the back of his neck, pulling him just a fraction closer until their foreheads rested together. The giggling was gone, replaced by a quiet, fierce clarity.
'I'm done laughing, Noel,' she whispered, her voice steadying. 'I just..I didn't think I'd be the one who got to hear it. Not after everything you've been through.' She blinked, her eyes searching his, 'I'm in it for the long haul too.'
Noel let out a long, shuddering breath, a tension he'd been carrying for months finally snapping. He didn't say anything at first; he just buried his face in the crook of her neck, holding her so tightly it was almost bruising. 'Good,' he rasped into her skin, his voice thick. 'That's all I need to know.'
The kiss was slow and possessive, a silent pact that made the walls of the hotel suite feel temporarily impenetrable. But the world outside had no patience for their sanctuary. The phone on the nightstand didn't just vibrate this time; it let out a sharp, rhythmic ping, the unmistakable sound of an urgent 'where the fuck are you' text from Liam.
Noel pulled back with a heavy exhale, his forehead still pressed against hers. The vulnerability in his eyes was slowly being edged out by the familiar, sharp clarity of 'The Chief.' He reached for his phone and squinted at the screen.
'It's Liam,' he muttered, glancing at the digital clock. 'We were supposed to be in the lobby for a promo meeting ten minutes ago'
Caroline sat up, clutching the duvet to her chest as the reality of her double life hit her like a bucket of ice water. 'As your PA, I should be telling you to get your trousers on and get down there. But as..' She trailed off, searching for the word they hadn't quite used yet.
Noel smirked, a look meant only for her, and finished the sentence. 'As my lover?' he supplied softly, 'As your lover, I wanna stay here with you for the rest of the week, but I know that's just not possible,' she murmured, unable to switch back to her professional role just yet.
He leaned over and caught her lips in one last, hard kiss before swinging his legs out of bed. The sight of his bare back, marked by the faint, frantic lines of her nails from the night before, made her throat go tight.
As he disappeared into the bathroom and the shower hissed to life, Caroline was left in the sudden silence of the room. The scent of them clung to the sheets, a stark contrast to the chaos of Heaton Park and the legal battle waiting for them beyond the curtains.
Half an hour later, Noel gave her one last, lingering kiss, a silent anchor before the storm, and slipped out of the room. As the door clicked shut, Caroline headed for the shower, the steam already beginning to rise, while Noel made his way to the waiting car.
Settling into the back of the blacked-out SUV, Noel stared out at the rain-slicked Manchester streets. His body still felt the phantom warmth of her, but his mind was a battlefield.
The long haul.
He'd said it, and he meant it, but the weight of that promise sat heavy in his chest. In the rearview mirror, he saw his own eyes, tired, sharp, and wary. He looked like the 'Chief' again, the man who had a comeback for every insult and a chord for every heartbreak. But inside, he was bracing for the collision.
He thought about the lawyers, the endless paperwork of a marriage turned into a business transaction, and the vitriol Sara continued to spew to anyone with a notebook. It was a bloodbath, and he was right in the center of it. Bringing Caroline into this mess felt like pulling someone into a burning building, yet she was the only reason he was even bothering to put out the fire.
She's too good for this circus, he thought, his jaw tightening. But she's the only one who makes this circus bearable.
He checked his watch. Hopefully Liam would have taken care of that promo stuff already.
He leaned his head back against the leather seat, closing his eyes for a fleeting second. He had to flip the switch. He had to be the untouchable Noel Gallagher again. Cold. Sarcastic. In control. He couldn't let a single person see the softness she'd left behind, or the vultures would tear them both apart.
As the car pulled up to the grand entrance of the Lowry, Noel saw the flashes of cameras reflecting off the wet pavement. He felt the familiar surge of adrenaline and irritation. He adjusted his shades, fixed his expression into a stony mask of indifference, and prepared to walk into the lions' den.
The door of the SUV opened, and he stepped right into a camera wall of white light, the paparazzi shouting his name, throwing questions about the divorce settlement and Sara's latest interview like jagged rocks. Noel didn't flinch as the cameras strobed against his shades, but one shouted question hit him like a physical blow: 'Noel! Any comment on Sara's exclusive in the Sun about the twenty-million demand?'
His pace didn't falter, but internally, his world tilted. An exclusive? The air in the Lowry lobby felt suddenly thin. They hadn't even sat down together for the first round, let alone the last, yet there it was, her ultimate betrayal. She'd gone to the tabloids. She'd opened the gates to the vultures before he'd even had his morning coffee.
'Noel! Is it true you're refusing to vacate the London house?' another vulture barked.
He kept his jaw locked, his expression a mask of stony indifference, but his mind was racing. He'd spent the last twelve hours wrapped in the quiet, honest sanctuary of Caroline's arms, believing for a fleeting moment that the world could be kept at bay. Now, his private life was splattered across the front pages.
'Chief! Where've you been all night? Solicitors or a hideout?'
He ignored them, sweeping past the security detail and into the lobby where Liam was already waiting to drag him out of sight.
As soon as they got into the elevator, Liam took a folded copy of the Sun out of his parka. 'Have you seen this? Your missus has gone nuclear, Noel. She's tellin' the world you're a tight-arsed bastard who's cheating on her with a staff member'
Noel felt the floor drop out from under him as the elevator surged upward. He stared at the grainy photo of Sara on the front page, her face twisted into a staged look of "betrayal." The words Staff and 'Cheating' seared into his retina, right next to a blurry long-lens shot of him and Caroline leaving a studio together weeks ago.
'She's lost her fucking mind,' Noel rasped, his voice barely more than a lethal whisper. The rage coiled in his chest, not over the lies about money or the house, but the direct, calculated hit on Caroline. Sara knew damn well that Caroline was the only member of staff everyone would know and recognize, and she'd just painted a neon bullseye on her back.
Liam leaned against the lift wall, his expression unusually sober behind his shades. 'She hasn't named her yet, but every vulture in the industry knows who she's pointing at. She's telling the world you are seeking 'comfort' from a member of staff.' Liam paused. 'And I suppose that's exactly what you did last night? you two are hiding from everyone while Sara just splatters it all over every newspaper headline'
The elevator pinged, the doors sliding open to the quiet, carpeted luxury of the penthouse floor. Noel stepped out, the crushed copy of the Sun still gripped in his hand like a weapon. Liam grabbed his arm to stop him, a protective tension radiation from his youngest brother that only the two of them ever understood.
'The vultures are in the lobby, Noel! They're waitin' for the 'staff member' to show up! You better tell her to use the back entrance, or go straight to Heaton Park, or she's gone be the front page of the Mirror by lunchtime!'
Noel nodded 'I know..I'll give her a call'. He hit Caroline's name on his speed dial, his heart hammering a frantic rhythm against his ribs.
"Pick up, pick up, pick up..." he muttered, pacing the length of the hallway.
He could see it now, the way the paparazzi would swarm her. The flashes, the shouted questions about 'cheating' and 'homewrecking.' She was the most professional person he knew, but no one was prepared for the sheer, unadulterated venom of a tabloid hit-job fueled by a scorned wife.
