1 - Agent Jauregui
11:59, 20 August 2020"Agent Jauregui, office please."
Two tired eyes that had been mindlessly gazing at a laptop screen, found the back of a grey haired man's head. Mr. Davis was already almost in his office when the dark haired woman realised she should probably be getting up to follow him. She shoved her chair back before making her way towards the two big glass doors. She felt the eyes of her colleagues glued onto her as she walked.
"Good luck." Janice, a 40 year old woman she'd never really spoken to, told her. She gave her a short nod before pushing the doors open and seeing her boss sit behind his desk, a cup of coffee in his hand.
"Sir?" She said, fidgeting with the hem of her dark blue shirt while the man looked up from his paper and cleared his throat.
"Y-yes, Jauregui. Sit, please." He gestured to one of the two leather chairs standing across his desk. She did as she was told while staring at the papers shortly, wondering what this would be about.
Would this be the day she'd be fired? Is this how that went? She hadn't done anything wrong, had she?
"How are you feeling?"
The question took her by surprise. She'd been working at the Miami Police Department for three years now, and apart from the therapist she was ordered to see once a month, never had anyone really asked her how she was feeling. "I- I'm good sir, thanks." She replied, tapping her finger onto her black jeans while she looked at the man. Was she supposed to ask how he is now or-
"Good." He said then. "I know your last operation went a bit extreme.."
She nodded, her pulse quickening when thinking back of how it all went down about two months ago. "I'm alright now." She replied shortly, not wanting to go into detail. She was a professional, she knew what she could handle.
"Good. So that means I can assign you to a new operation?" He asked, his light-blue eyes gazing into hers as he took a sip from his coffee. "You're ready?"
She swallowed. She was usually confident when it came to her work. She what she was able to do, she knew she was good. But because it almost went wrong the last time, her ego had gotten just a bit smaller.
"Y-yes, Sir." She said. "I think I am. What kind of operation are we talking about?"
"Undercover." Her boss told her then. "A few months at least."
"A few months? That sounds big. Who are we-"
"Have you ever heard of the name Armando Perez?"
She scoffed, almost wanting to say 'duh'. She figured her boss wouldn't like it though and so she just nodded.
"He bought a house in North Coconut Grove a few months back. He lives there with his wife and we're thinking he runs his business from there now, instead of from his old home in Downtown Miami.
She remained quiet as she listened to what her boss had to tell her. She was curious which role she would be playing in this plan, if there even was a plan yet.
"We bought the house next to it, and you're gonna live there, become friends with them so we can collect evidence and eventually plan an invasion so we can catch him in the act and lock him up forever."
A smile tugged at her lips, she took a breath and looked down at her hands. "That's quite the plan you've got worked out."
"You'll be earning double your wage." The grey man added, making her look up again.
"Double?" She said. "You really want me to do this, huh?"
"We think you're the best candidate. You're the best undercover agent we got on the team." Her boss said, which let her ego grow back again. She smiled. "There will be a whole team of people around the operation and you'll be reporting every single detail of it in an online log. There will be a team meeting at a secret location every week and of course you'll have acces to certain equipment to collect the evidence."
"And safety?" She found herself asking, since she'd almost gotten killed during her last operation.
"You'll be fully equipped." Her boss nodded confidently.
She looked down at her hands for a few seconds before having made up her mind. "I'll do it." She said, getting up from her chair. "When do I-"
"Sorry I'm late." Someone said, interrupting her. The voice came from behind and was one she vaguely recognised. She furrowed her eyebrows and turned around.
"Malik.." Her boss sighed. "I hadn't really expected anything else from you."
She shared a moment of eye-contact with the guy that had stormed into the office before turning her head towards her boss again.
"Sit down." He said to the blonde haired guy.
She looked at him, confused. "Well I guess I'll go then, Sir." She said. "Thanks for the instruc-"
"No, no, no, no, Jauregui." He interrupted her. "There was one more thing I wanted to tell you. This is agent Malik, he'll be your partner."
———
Silence had filled the office while the smug looking blonde boy sat down on the other leather chair, sticking out his hand at the dark haired woman in the room.
"You're kidding, right?" She'd said to her boss then, who'd furrowed his eyebrows at the woman.
Her boss had shaken his head and pointed at agent Malik, who'd retreated his hand and was now sat on the chair with his arms folded over one another, smiling widely.
"He will be your boyfriend from now on, in and around the 'Perez' household." Her boss said. She stared at him in disbelieve.
"And you didn't think of telling me that earlier on in this conversation?"
Her boss shrugged. "I thought you'd be professional enough not to care about who you'd be working with."
She scoffed, sitting back down in her chair. "With all due respect, Sir, but he is supposed to help me out when I'm dying, you know? But he fucked up so badly last time, that he almost got me killed."
"Hey, hey, hey now.." The blonde haired guy said then, putting his hands up in defence. "Mistakes happen, Jauregui." His thick Brittish accent made her roll her eyes before turning back towards her boss.
"I can asure you, miss Jauregui, that agent Malik has learned from the mistakes that were made in the last operation and that he'd be glad to work with you again, to prove it."
The raven haired woman tapped her finger on her knee a few times, looking at both men while she was deciding on if she should or shouldn't take part in an operation this big, with a guy who's so stupid, he'd literally shot her last time. She just knew she needed the money and she could use the thrill..
"Fine." She muttered after some time. "Text me a time and location and I'll be there."
———
"Ah agent Jauregui, glad you're here for the briefing. Take a seat. Would you like something to drink?" An eager colleague that she'd never seen before, had spoken to her so fast that she had to blink a few times before nodding her head. "Coffee please. Black." She said before sitting down around a large round table that stood in the middle of a hotel suite near her new location.
The guy nodded, pushed his thick glasses back and hurried off towards the coffee machine before the hotelroom-door opened once more and agent Malik appeared. It had been almost a week since the two agents were sat in their boss' office.
"Oh hey." The guy with the glasses said, his voice slightly high-pitched. "Coffee, Malik?"
He shook his head and smiled before sitting down at the table. "Hey," he said as he sat down. "I haven't really gotten the chance to introduce myself last time. I'm-"
"No real names!" The guy with the glasses shouted then. Agent Malik gave him a strange look while I just grinned, amused. "Believe me," The guy said. "It's much safer. The less you know about each other, the better."
Agent Malik nodded before turning his head in her direction once more. "Well then.." He said. "I'm- I guess my name is Zayn."
A loud laugh escaped from agent Jauregui's lips. "That's the best you could come up with huh?" She said, looking at Zayn's hand, which was still dangling mid-air. "My name's Lauren." She said, shortly looking into his brown eyes while reaching out and giving his hand a rough squeeze.
He remained quiet while the coffee arrived, together with the guy in the glasses. "I'm Tom." He said. "I'll be the one you'll be communicating all of the information to. That's Jesy, she's the eyes of the operation. She has acces to every single camera that we've installed around the area in the past couple of weeks. Lauren hadn't even seen the other woman in the room, since she was sitting in the corner, laptop on her lap, headphones on. She gave them a short wave though. "And that's Carter. He's here for protection and will be the first one you'll see in case anything goes wrong." Tom continued, his round glasses perched neatly onto his nose. Carter was sat on the couch, wearing an earpiece and a tough look. He was one of the most muscled guys, Lauren had probably ever seen.
"And you'll be Lauren and Zayn from now on." Tom said, pointing at us.
"Last names?" Zayn asked, his hands on the table.
"I mean you can decide but something simple will be fine. You're not married so it'll have to be two separate ones." Tom shrugged.
Lauren and Zayn looked at one another. "I'll just go with Green." Lauren shrugged.
Zayn chuckled. "Let me guess, your eyes?"
Lauren leaned back in her chair and crossed her arms. "You have a better one then?"
"I'd like mine to be Price." He said, looking back at Tom, who was writing them down.
"Super." He said enthusiastically.
Lauren rolled her eyes. "Super." She repeated the guy, shooting him a fake smile.
He ignored her and rambled on. "Okay so I'm gonna explain a few things to you guys. First of all, this is our meeting-place for the next couple of months. We'll be here every Friday at 8 pm, to discuss your weekly findings and such. In the meantime, at your new home, you'll be keeping a log on your laptops, so we can read everything you guys are going through." Lauren took a sip from her coffee while staring at the blue eyed guy, who continued gladly. "It is very important that you write every single detail down, okay? Because you'll most likely be witnessing loads of illegal stuff."
"Exciting." Zayn muttered. To which Lauren rolled her eyes once more. She wondered how the hell she was going to be able to pretend this guy was her boyfriend.
"You've read your backstories right?" Tom asked, looking at the two agents expectingly. Lauren and Zayn nodded. A whole script had been sent to their laptops and they'd had five days to immerse themselves into it. "Yep." Lauren said. Zayn nodded.
"Good. So you've been together for almost a year now, your anniversary is?"
"August 3th." Lauren was quick to reply.
Tom nodded. "You've met each other-"
"In a resort in Spain, while we were both on vacation." Zayn replied. "I went together with a bunch of colleagues and she was there with her sister."
Lauren rolled her eyes. He was obviously trying to show off how well he'd read the 100 page long, script.
"What do you do for a living, Lauren?" Tom asked then.
"I've been working for my father's company for a while, before meeting Zayn. Now I don't have to work anymore, since he's earning all the money with the online marketing strategy company he runs. He also had rich parents, who died two years ago in a car accident. They've given him a shit load of money because he's the only child."
Zayn looked at me, shaking his head with a smile on his face.
"Great, great!" Tom said. "Now remember, it's important to grow close with Armando Perez and his wife, Camila Cabello."
"Why'd she keep her last name?" Zayn wondered out loud.
Tom smiled. "Well, maybe you'll get close enough to find out." He said.
"Anyways, Armando is pretty much a full time drug dealer, specialised in XTC-pills. He also runs a car-company. His comrades are almost always around. His wife is not known to engage in any criminal activity yet. We're not sure if she's aware of her husbands' job."
Lauren scoffed. "Oh come on. She's aware, right? How would she not know?"
"Armando runs a car company next to the whole drugs thing, she might be thinking-"
"We'll find out." Lauren said then. "Can we go now? Was this all?"
Tom nodded, noticing the agent's impatience. "Movers have decorated your house yesterday since obviously, you're way too rich to do that yourselves." He said. "Your house will be fully equipped with everything you need. Theres food in the kitchen and clothes in the closets, in the correct sizes obviously."
Lauren took a sip of her coffee, already thinking of how annoyed she'll be of the fancy clothing she'd have to wear. If she could, she'd just wear her t-shirts, ripped jeans and boots, but obviously Perez and Cabello would find out they're not a part of the rich community then.
"Cameras are placed throughout the garden and in the living-room."
"Great, so I can at least do my business in peace." Zayn joked. Lauren sighed and was tapping her foot impatiently.
"You can change clothes now." Tom said, pointing at a clothing-rack that was stood in the middle of the room. Lauren looked at the luxurious white blouse she was supposed to wear today, together with some tight, black flair jeans and high heels. "Great." She said as she stood up.
