Chapter 5
11:38, 10 March 2025Michael's POV
For what felt like an hour, I kept tossing and turning but no position seemed somehow comfortable. Maybe it was the mattress, the one in our bedroom is way more comfortable than the one in the guest room.
Or maybe it's because I kept wondering why Maeve refuses to talk to me. I even called for an emergency appointment with Dr. Reese, who informed me that Maeve did a lot of talking, but the psychologist wouldn't go into detail since this kind of information is confidential.
She not only opened up to Dr. Reese but apparently also had no problem talking to Jared, a random security guard, who has been working for us for about 6 months now.
Still my mind had a hard time processing any reason Maeve refuses talking to-
A light knock on the bedroom door caught my attention. I wasn't sure if I heard correct that's why I kept my mind quiet but the door opened anyway, meaning Maeve probably tried sneaking in.
The only source of light in this room was a dimly lit light on the night stand which was more than enough for Maeve to see that I was in fact still awake.
Our eyes met but she didn't speak a word while coming closer to me and sitting down on the mattress, facing me.
I sat myself up as well and leaned against the headboard while I waited for her to say anything.
"This year has been great so far" she started, still keeping eye contact. "We've been doing great, Nicolas is growing and learning new words every day! And I thought all I had to worry about were you and Nicolas and how bad I want to add another edition to our already perfect family, for once my life felt perfect."
She looked down at her lap, fiddling with her fingers.
"And then Bill stormed in this morning while we were having breakfast, telling us about my father who apparently had a heart attack... He reminded me that I am a prisoner in my own home and I don't know what happens now. I don't know how to feel. He still was my father and when he died he thought I already am dead. This makes me sick... You know what's the worst of all this?"She asked, her eyes became watery.
"He probably didn't even shed a tear for me and yet here I am, wondering if he had a little love left for me, his youngest daughter, who apparently hasn't changed much from the little girl that only ever wanted her daddy's attention."
Maeve looked away but I could still see her eyes, she was at the brim of tears, fighting harder than ever not to cry, taking deep breaths, trying to calm herself down.
"I won't cry" she said, her voice shaking. "Not for him!"
The sight of her, at the verge of breaking down showed me that she needed me right now and I needed to think of something that would keep her from crying, and I needed it now.
"I'm working on this new song... I want to sing it to you" I quickly said before jumping out of bed.
As I stood in front of her, I was ready to make a fool out of myself in order to see her happy again.
Since I haven't thought of a choreography yet, I needed to come up with one quick but I was thinking of an Egyptian theme whenever the song came to my mind.
"It goes like this,
Do you remember when we fell in love?We were young and innocent thenDo you remember how it all began? It just seemed like haven, so why did it end?"
To the beat in my head I started snipping my fingers while moving from side to side.
"Do you remember, back in the Fall? We'd be together all day longDo you remember us holding hands? In each other's eyes, we'd stareTell meDo you remember when we fell in loveDo you remember the time when we first met girl? Do you you remember the time when we fell in love?Do you remember the time"
While I continued with the song I took a quick glance at Maeve whose eyes were still a little teary but her lips were curled into a smile.
"I bet you remember I bet you remember I bet you remember I bet you remember
Remember the timeWooRemember the timeDo you remember, girl?On the phone, you and me'Til dawn, two or threeWhat about us, girl?"
My hands grabbed Maeve's and in one rapid move I pulled her to her feet, our bodies pressed together as we moved to the rhythm of the melody I created with my voice.
Maeve gladly followed my lead and while her hands rested on my shoulders I kept one of mine on her lower back, making sure our hips were touching.
We kept swaying to the melody while our eyes connected and everything around us seemed to disappear. The only thing I could think of right now was the blue of her eyes.
And while getting lost in her eyes, I remembered the first time I laid eyes on her and how she wasn't really impressed by me only to find out later that she actually was a huge fan because of her sister.
I remembered our picnic at the venue's rooftop on my birthday where she gifted me a friendship bracelet that I still wear to this day.
I remembered our roadtrip in Australia, I've never felt so free in my life before than I feel with her by my side.
As I got carried away I let the rhythm move me, I proceeded to turn but halfway through, Maeve let out a cry in agony as her grip on me tightened.
"What's wrong? Are you in pain?" I was quick to help her sit back down. Her hands immediately covered her knee.
"I'm sorry, Maeve, I got carried away" I apologized. Sometimes I just forget that she cannot move the way I can, especially since the accident.
"It's ok" she murmured while lightly massaging her knee.
As I got down on the floor, I put my hands on hers, taking them away to get a better look of her knee. The scar was healed but still very present. My hands mimicked her massaging, being as gentle as I can while I searched for Maeve's eyes.
"Does it hurt a lot?" I wondered since she barely complains about pain.
"Sometimes, but I guess this pain is something I have to live with."
Unfortunately I knew exactly what Maeve was talking about. The burn on my scalp, I got when shooting the Pepsi commercial, also still bothers me, years after the accident and it'll probably still bother me when I'm old and grey.
"Is it better now?"
"Yes, thank you, Michael" one of her hands reached for me. She softly stroke through my hair before resting her hand on the side of my face, her thumb caressing my cheek.
To make it up to her, I placed a few light kisses on her knee before sitting down next to her.
"So" I said awkwardly. "You really should work on your spinning."
"Michael!" Maeve yelled after softly hitting my shoulder before she started laughing.
While admiring her laugh, I joined in, being proud of myself for successfully distracting her from her father's death.
