Light awoke the blonde mage from her otherwise deep sleep. Her white, half-transparent curtains, fluttered lightly and peacefully over her. The sun was shining bright, the sky was a peach or pink color and the wind, coming in from her half-open window, was nice and refreshing. So this is how mornings feels like. Lucy thought. She didn't want to wake up yet. She wanted to go back to her nice, deep sleep, but she also wanted to admire the beautiful morning. She stretched and it felt so good. Her body said some cracking noises, but it didn't mean anything.
As Lucy turned to her side, she could see the salmon haired Dragon Slayer sleep peacefully, with his blue exceed on his stomach. He was snoring lightly, and a small unconscious smile was playing on his lips. She just looked at him for a while, until she dozed off again. This time, not dreamless. ___________________________________________________________________________________________
It was raining outside the big windows. The miniature version of Lucy sat on a chair by the couch. An adult blonde mage, with Lucy's face, lied on the couch, ill and very weak. She had a wet cloth on her forehead to cool her down. Her face was contracted in pain, but she tried to stay strong for the little one. The both were in the big living room of the Heartfilia Estate. The woman on the couch let out a cough and turned to Lucy.
"Lucy, my dear," she whispered with a weak voice. "I want you to... have my keys. My spirits They were pre..." another cough found its way through her lips. "...prepared for this day. They will protect you and fight with you, as your friend!" She placed a hand on Lucy's cheek and stroke it with her thumb.
"What do you mean, mama?" Lucy asked, confused. "Why don't you want your keys anymore?" Her mother sighed, looking sad at her child.
"Lucy, mama is really ill," she answered. "At one point I will be sleeping really deep. But don't worry, I will always be with you, in here-" she pointed at the child’s chest, referring to her heart.
"But... but papa said it just was a flu!" Lucy insisted, raising her voice a bit. Her eyes were full of tears, but she didn't let them stream. Now her mother was being so strong, then she should do so, too.
"Baby girl, will you go get my... your keys on the bookshelf over there?" Lucy did as she was told. The keys were hanging from a silver keychain, and had spark, which impressed Lucy.
"Can you... summon Aquarius for me?" her mother asked. "I want to see you do it, before..." She didn't want to sadden the child anymore, so she just put on a weak smile.
"Okay... It was..." The little girl picked out the key to The Water Bearer, or the "mermaid" as she called her. She held the key against the glass of water, standing on the table. "Open the Gate of the Water Bearer! Aquarius!" The key's end began to glow, and Aquarius was summoned.
"Aquarius, my loyal spirit," The mother said, with a caring voice. "I guess this is where our paths apart."
"Layla, I won't accept this," The mermaid said, firmly. "There has to be a cure! You can't just end like this!" The mother, named Layla, smiled sadly and then shook her head.
"I'm sorry that we have to end it like this," she said, reaching for her spirit. "But I'm afraid we have to. Aquarius, if you want to make me happy, and able to sleep a good sleep... I would like you and the other spirits to make a contract with my daughter, Lucy. I want her to be safe, and it would make me happy if the spirits ran through the family." Aquarius gave Lucy a glare for a moment, but then looked back at Layla.
"As you wish, Layla," she sighed, bowing down to take her owners hand. Her eyes were tearing up. "I will keep your child safe, no matter what cost. So will the others." Layla smiled gratefully and let go of her spirits hand. When they let go, Aquarius disappeared into a cloud of light, unfortunately with a sad expression.
"Lucy, my beloved child," Layla reached for her daughter, who immediately took her hand. "Mama loves you very, very much, but... you have to wake up, now." Lucy looked confused up at her mother.
"W-What do you mean, mama?" Lucy asked, but she couldn't hear an answer before she was sucked out of the dream._________________________________________________________________________________________
Lucy woke up with a gasp, to see Natsu kneeling besides her bed. He looked at her with a worried look, like she just fell down from the sky. She didn't even notice that she was sweaty and warm tears were streaming down her face. She just looked really surprised.
"N-Natsu...?" She was about to ask what was wrong, but then she got a flash og the dream she just woke up from, and put a hand to her face. She then whispered to herself: "Who was that?" She then let out a unwanted sob.
"Lucy, it's okay," Natsu mumbled, holding a hand on her shoulder. "It was just a bad dream. Nothing is going to hurt you, I promise." For about thirty seconds they were silent, but then Natsu broke the silence, with a question: "Do you want to tell me about you dream?"
Lucy hesitated for a second, but then nodded. "Well, I was there, but I wasn't me. I was a little girl. There was a woman who looked like me, a little. She was sick and weak. I think she was... her name was Layla."
"Lucy, I think that was your mother," Natsu said, unsure what to do. He wasn't exactly the person to comfort people. They sat silent again. There was nothing to say right now. Natsu was about to go to the kitchen, but when he was starting to stand up, Lucy grabbed his sleeve. He looked down at her.
"Natsu, will you..." She didn't look at him, but in her lap. "Will you... tell me about my past?" Natsu looked surprised at first, but then he realized something; she didn't even know herself right now. She was just thrown in a world with no knowledge about her past.
"Y-Yeah, sure," Natsu kneeled again to start telling the story. "You know that you're Lucy Heartfilia... ehm, you were born into a wealthy family, your father was Jude Heartfilia, and your mother was Layla Heartfilia-" Lucy stopped him and asked: "With 'was', do you mean they... died?"
"Well, your mom died when you were 10. Some kind of illness, I think. When we came back, after 7 years of sleeping, I know it's confusing, but I'll explain about that later, you went to see your dad and it turned out that he had passed away."
Lucy was silent, waiting for Natsu to continue. He had waited a bit to see if she was going to get emotional, but she weren't. She just looked at him.
"Let's just say that you and your dad didn't have the best kind of relationship," Natsu continued. "After your mothers death, he pretty much ignored your and didn't pay attention to you. Then you ran away one day and after a while, we met. And after fighting some evil people, I took you to Fairy Tail, and this is your life now. Of course, I don't know if you hid anything for me, but you don't know either."
Lucy were silent again, but this time it was only because she wanted to swallow all the information. "Thank you, Natsu," She said, smiling. "Now I at least now the general."
"Hey, no problem, Luce," Natsu grinned. "I'm gonna go get some of your food... if that's okay?" He pointed at the kitchen.
"What would the old Lucy say that you should?"
"She would say that I needed to let her sleep and buy my own food." Natsu said, smiling of the memory.
"Wow, I sound... really mean," Lucy admitted, looking down at her hands. Admiring the guild mark on the right one.
Natsu just let out a chuckle. "Yeah, you could be a little... hot tempered, but you weren't... aren't mean, Lucy." He wore a sad smile. "You are one of the nicest persons I know." What was that...? Did Natsu... blush?
"Thanks, Natsu," Lucy blushed as well. "And yeah, sure, go take my food. I'm sure I'll beat the living out of you when I get my memories back."
"I'll be looking forward to that," Natsu laughed. "Uh, go get ready. Try not to wake Happy. He's sleeping so well, right now."
"O-Okay, but where are we going?" Lucy asked, not sure if she should be excited or scared. "It's 5:30, nobody is awake yet, I think?"
"Yeah, you're right," Natsu exclaimed from the kitchen, his mouth filled with food. "But if we get early to the request board then we can get one of the good missions before anyone else!"
"M-Mission?" Lucy exclaimed, scared. "Natsu, are you sure that's a good idea? I mean, I have no memories... maybe I should just sit this one out."
"Mhmm," Natsu muttered, munching on some food. "Nope, not gonna happen. Just because you are memory less, doesn't excuse you from teamwork. Now wash up or whatever girls do."
And then it hit Lucy. She had no idea what girls did in the morning to get ready. What was Lucy's style? What kind of clothes should she put together? How did one simple do hair? She stood up from her bed, glancing over at the kitchen's opening, where Natsu stood.
"What?" He asked and stopped filling his stomach.
"H-How do you..." Lucy blushed. How in the world would Natsu know anything about girl stuff when he was a boy? "How do you wash up? What does Lucy wear? How do you do hair?" Natsu hit his forehead. He didn't think that he had to teach her those kinds of things. That was Erza's things to deal with!
"Ehm..." Natsu didn't know how girls did wash up. Did they just shower? Did they put on make-up? No, neither Lucy or Erza wore make-up. "Y-You take a shower, and put different kinds of soap in your hair... then you wash that out, and dry you self with a towel." That sounded simple. Natsu blushed, again.
"What about clothes? And hair?" She looked at him like he was some kind of expert. "Uh, and what kinds of soap?"
Natsu knew nothing about clothes. And if he had touch anyone's hair, it was his own. "I'm... gonna go get Erza. She knows stuff about that. She can help you wash up, too."
"O-Okay," Lucy said, grateful that an actual girl could help her. Scared that she didn't really know this girl. "Then hurry back, I don't like to be alone."
"You got it, Luce," Natsu said. He went out of the kitchen and woke up his partner, who replied to his awakening with: "Why are you waking my up so early, Carla?"
"Happy, it's Natsu, not Carla I'm afraid so," Natsu said. The blue exceed rubbed his eyes. "We have to go to Erza's dorm so she can help Lucy get ready."
"This early in the morning?" Happy said, still tired. Just wanting to go back to sleep.
"Do you know how girls makes them selves ready in the morning?" Happy shook his head. "Didn't think so. C'mon, let's hurry, then you can go back to sleep." The two partners opened the window and went out. Just before Natsu was totally gone he exclaimed: "Don't worry, Luce, we are right back!"
Lucy smiled, gratefully, and went over to her desk. A small doll sat on the one side of the desk and a warm feeling float through her as she picked it up. "Michelle" was embroidered into the dress it wore. She put the doll down, and fumbled with some papers. She picked up a few papers with a note on that said: "Natsu, don't even think about it!" and skimmed them through.
"I am... writing a novel?" Lucy asked her self, curious. __________________________________________________________________________________________
"Natsu, what if Erza is going to punish us for waking her up?" Happy asked as he flew through the air with his partner hanging from him.
"She's not," Natsu said, though he knew it was a lie. "Okay, she is, but she is going to give us a milder punishment, when it comes to Lucy. She wants to help." Happy put Natsu down in front of the girl’s dorm. It was big and boring as usual.
"Are we even allowed to be here?" Happy asked.
"Aw, don't worry," Natsu assured him. "We'll just pay a short visit!" They walked into the building, and found their way to Erza's dorm. They stood in front of the wooden door, just waiting for one of them to knock.
"You knock," Natsu whispered, pushing the exceed towards the door with his foot.
"No way, you knock!" Happy exclaimed, pushing Natsu's foot away.
"Okay, okay," He sighed. Hesitant he knocked on the door. He first heard some muffling sounds, then a tired groan and at last some footsteps. The tired groan had scared both of them, thinking that Erza was in a bad mood. The door handle twisted a bit and the door opened. A surprisingly fresh Erza, wearing a robe showed up at the door.
"This better be important since the two of you, A; shows up at the girl dorm and B; shows up at the girl dorm at 6 o' clock." Erza said, her face emotionless. She had grabbed a sword
"Oh, great Erza," Natsu said, bowing down together with Happy. "Please help Lucy shower up and get dressed and all that girl stuff that she don't know a thing about!"
Erza's facial expression changed. "Okay, then," She said, equipping into her normal armor. "Just tell me what you are doing up so early."
"We want to pick a good mission before all the good ones are taken!" Happy exclaimed, exited.
"Wait, what?" Erza exclaimed, sounding angry. "Lucy can't go on missions in her current state. She is to defenseless right now. The world is to new for her!"
"Erza please!" Natsu said, making puppy dog eyes. "I'll take care of her a protect her, and you guys will come too, right? She'll be totally safe. Maybe she'll even get some of her memories back!"
"Okay, I have an idea," Erza said. It wasn't that often Erza agreed on compromises. "You pick an easy one. Not too high paid, not too dangerous. Just simple."
"Hng, fine," Natsu finally agreed. "Well, c'mon. You have to make Lucy ready, and teach her how to do... faces."
They together hurried back to Lucy's apartment, finding Lucy curled up in her duvet, saying: "I heard a noise." It made them laugh, and also made her smile, a little. _________________________________________________________________________________________
What mission will they choose? And will it go exacly like the planned? Stay tuned for the 7th chapter: Confusion
