Chapter 14 - Fractured Calm

11:45, 17 October 2025

Kiefer POV

The second he saw the black van swallow Jay Jay, something inside him shattered. His stomach dropped, chest tightening until he could barely breathe. No. No, no, no.

He sprinted across the wet parking lot, rain slapping his hoodie, every step slick with puddles, but he didn't care. "Jay Jay!" he screamed, voice raw and desperate, cutting through the storm. Heart hammering, lungs burning, he skidded to a stop where she had been, only to find an empty space, nothing but water reflecting the gray sky.

The imprint of her sneakers in the gravel made his stomach twist. Someone had taken her. She's gone. The thought was unbearable.

He dialed frantically, first his phone, then hers. Nothing. The line rang, then went to voicemail. His fingers trembled so badly he nearly dropped it. "Shit... shit..." he muttered, scanning the parking lot, the surrounding streets, every shadow.

His mind raced. Who? Why? Where? The world seemed impossibly silent except for the rain, like even the universe was holding its breath, letting the panic consume him.

Kiefer ran toward the street, rain soaking through his clothes, hoodie clinging to his skin. He tried to spot the van but it had already vanished, swallowed by the gray, wet afternoon. A scream—his own—got caught in his throat as he ran faster, adrenaline giving him strength he didn't know he had.

He remembered the abandoned classroom, the house, every single moment from yesterday. Every touch, every brush of skin, every laugh now felt like a dagger. She shouldn't have been alone.

His mind spun: Who would do this? Was it someone from school? Someone who knew her? Every possibility was worse than the last. He couldn't think straight. He couldn't plan. All he knew was: she was gone, and he had to find her before... before anything else could happen.

His hands clawed at the air as he ran toward the street, ignoring the pain in his legs, ignoring the cold soaking through his sneakers. He wouldn't stop. He couldn't. Not her. Not Jay Jay.

Every second felt like hours. He cursed, shouted, scanned every alley, every parked car, every shadow that could hide her. His chest burned, lungs screamed, but he wouldn't slow. The city seemed endless, sprawling, indifferent. But he wouldn't let it take her.

And then, a thought sliced through the panic: She's terrified. That alone fueled him, furious, desperate, and impossibly alive. He would find her. He had to.

Jay Jay POV

Darkness. Cold. The smell of metal and damp air. Her hands were bound, wrists sore. Her hoodie was gone, wet strands of hair stuck to her face. Panic coiled in her stomach, tight and sharp.

She struggled, but the ropes only cut into her skin. Fear rushed through her, hot and suffocating. Her heart thumped painfully, louder than the van's engine.

Somewhere in the distance, a door slammed. Footsteps. Voices. She swallowed hard, trying to calm herself, trying to think, trying to plan—but everything was jumbled, chaotic.

Her mind flicked back to Kiefer—his stupid grin, the way he teased her, how he would never let this happen. That thought, that tiny spark of hope, was all she had as the van moved, carrying her further into the unknown.

She pressed herself against the wall of the van, shivering, heart still racing, and whispered her name in the dark:

"Kiefer..."
