03:50, 4 January 2022Alyssa didn’t jump that far into the future this time, which was obvious when she saw the Tenth Doctor with Martha Jones. she grabbed onto the console as it shook about, “But how do you travel in time? What makes it go?” Martha asked, “Oh, let's take the fun and mystery out of everything. Martha, you don't want to know. It just does. Hold on tight.” The Doctor said, said as he finished piloting the Tardis and the shaking stopped as Martha and Alyssa both fell down onto the grating “Blimey. Do you have to pass a test to fly this thing?” “Yes, and he failed it,” Alyssa said as she stood up, “Oh hello Alyssa, and shut up.” the Doctor said, as he looked at Martha who was confused about the newcomer “Alyssa? but I just saw an Alyssa and you are definitely not her,” Martha said, “Oh right Regeneration, sorry last time I saw you I looked completely different, but I assure you Im Alyssa.” Alyssa said, “Right.” Martha said, “So you guys have two hearts and you can completely change your face. anything else I should know?” Martha asked, “Nope that’s about it.” Alyssa said, smiling at her which made Martha shake her head, before the Doctor interrupted the two of them by rushing towards the door before turning around and looking at Martha. “I promised you one trip, and one trip only. Outside this door, brave new world.” The Doctor said, “Where are we?” Martha said, “Take a look. After you.” The Doctor said, and Martha walked over and exited the Tardis. “Oh, you are kidding me. You are so kidding me. Oh, my God, we did it. We travelled in time. Where are we? No, sorry. I got to get used to this whole new language. When are we?”Martha said, as they looked around and saw people dressed in medieval outfits, “Mind out.” The Doctor said, before pulling Alyssa and Martha back as some emptied a bucket in front of them. “Somewhere before the invention of the toilet. Sorry about that.” “I've seen worse. I've worked the late night shift A+E. But are we safe? I mean, can we move around and stuff?” Martha said, as the Doctor and Alyssa started forward, “course we can. Why do you ask?” The Doctor said, “It's like in the films. You step on a butterfly, you change the future of the human race.” Martha said, “it's not like the films Martha.” Alyssa said, “Tell you what then, don't step on any butterflies. What have butterflies ever done to you?” The Doctor asked, “What if, I don't know, what if I kill my grandfather?”“Well you’re in luck Martha, I don’t think your grandfather exists yet, a distant relative absolutely your grandfather not yet. However are you planning to?” “No.” Martha said, “Well, then we don’t have a problem do we?” Alyssa asked, as the three started walking forward through the crowded street, “And this is London?” Martha said, “I think so. Alyssa do you want to take a guess?” The Doctor said, “Around maybe 1599?” Alyssa asked, making the Doctor smile, “Oh, but hold on. Am I all right? I'm not going to get carted off as a slave, am I?” Martha asked, “No,” Alyssa said, “Why would they do that?” The Doctor asked, “Not exactly white, in case you haven't noticed.” Martha said, “We’re not even human. Just walk about like you own the place. Works for me. Besides, you'd be surprised. Elizabethan England, not so different from your time. Look over there. They've got recycling.” The Doctor said, gesturing to a man who was shoveling manure. then two men who were talking over a water barrel. “Water cooler moment.” before they continued past a preacher, “And the world will be consumed by flame.” the Preacher said, “Global warming. Oh, yes, and entertainment. Popular entertainment for the masses. If I'm right, we're just down the river by Southwark, right next to” the Doctor started only to start running Martha and Alyssa following before he stopped when they could see the Globe Theatre. “Oh, yes, the Globe Theatre! Brand new. Just opened. Through, strictly speaking, it's not a globe, it's a tetradecagon. Fourteen sides. Containing the man himself.” “Whoa, you don't mean. Is Shakespeare in there?” Martha said, “Shall we go see him?” Alyssa asked the Doctor, “I think we shall, Miss Smith, Miss Jones, will you accompany me to the theatre?” The Doctor said holding one arm out to both of them. Alyssa laughing as she took his arm, “Mister Smith, I will.” Martha said, taking the other arm, “When you get home, you can tell everyone you've seen Shakespeare.” The Doctor said,“Then I could get sectioned.” Martha said, as the three started towards the theatre.
They stayed throughout the whole play ‘Love Labour’s Lost’ and has just reached the end and everyone was clapping “That's amazing! Just amazing. It's worth putting up with the smell. And those are men dressed as women, yeah?” Martha said, “London never changes.” The Doctor said, “Where's Shakespeare? I want to see Shakespeare.” Martha said before she shouted: “Author! Author!” before she stopped “Do people shout that? Do they shout Author?” “Well”Alyssa started only to be interrupted by a man shouting “Author! Author!” which then the entire crowd started as well, “They do now.” Alyssa finally finished, and Shakespeare himself walked onto the stage “He's a bit different from his portraits.” Martha commented, “Genius. He's a genius. The genius. The most human human there's ever been. Now we're going to hear him speak. Always he chooses the best words. New, beautiful, brilliant words.” The Doctor started, “Ah, shut your big fat mouths!” Shakespeare shouted, “Oh, well.” The Doctor said, a bit disappointed, “You should never meet your heroes.” Martha said, “You've got excellent taste, I'll give you that. Oh, that's a wig.” Shakespeare said, looking through the crowd, “I know what you're all saying. Loves Labour's Lost, that's a funny ending, isn't it? It just stops. Will the boys get the girls? Well, don't get your hose in a tangle, you'll find out soon. Yeah, yeah. All in good time. You don't rush a genius.” he started before he suddenly went rigid and continued “When? Tomorrow night. The premiere of my brand new play. A sequel, no less, and I call it Loves Labour's Won.” which made both the Doctor and Alyssa frown, before they and the crowd left the theatre. As they were walking out of the theatre, the Doctor and Alyssa were looking around, “I'm not an expert, but I've never heard of Loves Labour's Won.” Martha said, “Well that’s because it's the Lost play, there’s rumors of it existing and it’s listed in his list of plays, but it never actually turns up, no one knows why.” Alyssa said, “Have you got a mini-disc or something? We can tape it. We can flog it. Sell it when we get home and make a mint.” Martha said, “No.” The Doctor and Alyssa said together, “That would be bad.” Martha realized, “Yeah, yeah.” The Doctor said, “Well, how come it disappeared in the first place?” Martha said, and Alyssa started looking at the Doctor which an expression he could only read as ‘stay and investigate.’ “Well, I was just going to give you a quick little trip in the Tardis,” The Doctor started before he finally gave into Alyssa’s look “but I suppose we could stay a bit longer.”
After walking around the theatre for a little bit they finally found out where Shakespeare was they started towards the room “Hello! Excuse me, not interrupting, am I? Mister Shakespeare, isn't it?” The Doctor started as he headed into the room ahead of Alyssa and Martha, “Oh, no. No, no, no. Who let you in? No autographs. No, you can't have yourself sketched with me. And please don't ask where I get my ideas from. Thanks for the interest. Now be a good boy and shove” Shakespeare started, before he spotted Martha and Alyssa walking in “Hey, nonny nonny. Sit right down here next to me. You two get sewing on them costumes. Off you go.” Shakespear said “Come on, lads. I think our William's found his new muses.”a woman said, before the people who were previously sitting started leaving, “Sweet ladies.” “Such unusual clothes. So fitted.” Shakespeare said, about what the two were wearing as the three sat down,“Er, verily, forsooth, egads.” Martha said, “don’t do that, Don’t” Alyssa said, I'm Sir Doctor of Tardis and these aremy companions, Miss Alyssa Smith and Miss Martha Jones.” The Doctor said, as he brought out his psychic paper and showed it to Shakespeare. “Interesting, that bit of paper. It's blank.” Shakespeare said pointing at it making both Alyssa and the Doctor grin, “Oh, that's very clever. That proves it. Absolute genius.” the Doctor said, “No, it says so right there. Sir Doctor, Martha Jones. It says so.” Martha said, as she looked at the paper, “And I say it's blank.” Shakespeare reaffirmed, “Psychic paper. Er, long story. Oh, I hate starting from scratch.” The Doctor said, trying to explain it to Martha, “Psychic? Never heard that before and words are my trade. Who are you exactly? More's the point, who is your delicious blackamoor lady?” Shakespeare said, looking at Martha, “What did you say?” Martha said, “Oops. Isn't that a word we use nowadays? An Ethiop girl? A swarth? A Queen of Afric?” Shakespeare said, which seemed to offend Martha even more, “I can't believe I'm hearing this.” Martha said, looking at the Doctor, “It's political correctness gone mad. Er, Martha's from a far-off land. Freedonia.” The Doctor said, right before a noble looking man they knew to be called Lynley came in, “Excuse me! Hold hard a moment. This is abominable behaviour. A new play with no warning? I demand to see a script, Mister Shakespeare. As Master of the Revels, every new script must be registered at my office and examined by me before it can be performed.” Lynley said, “Tomorrow morning, first thing, I'll send it round.” Shakespeare said, “I don't work to your schedule, you work to mine. The script, now!” Lynley said, “I can't.” Shakespeare admitted, and that didn’t make him any happier, “Then tomorrow's performance is cancelled.” the man said,“It's all go around here, isn't it?” Martha said, “I'm returning to my office for a banning order. If it's the last thing I do, Love's Labours Won will never be played.” Lynley said before he turned around and left the room, “Well then, mystery solved. That's Love's Labours Won over and done with. Thought it might be something more, you know, more mysterious.” “I wish it could be that simple Martha.” Alyssa said, before a scream sounded, “Help me!” a womans voice yelled, as the four rushed out of the room and down to the courtyard where Lynley was spitting out an excessive amount of water, “It's that Lynley bloke.” Martha said, “What's wrong with him? Leave it to me. I'm a doctor.” The Doctor said, before rushing towards him, “So am I, near enough.” Martha said, as she too rushed to help Lynley, before he suddenly collapsed,Martha going down with him in order to help him. “Got to get the heart going. Mister Lynley, come on. Can you hear me? You're going to be all right.” Martha said, before she tried to clear his airway, but more water gushed out of his mouth, “What the hell is that?” Martha said, as Alyssa leaned down by her, “I’ve never seen anything like that, his lungs are full of water, he drowned and it's almost like he was stabbed in the heart, an invisible blow.” Alyssa said, before looking up at the Doctor who walked over to a woman they had seen before“Good mistress, this poor fellow has died from a sudden imbalance of the humours. A natural if unfortunate demise. Call a constable and have him taken away.” The Doctor said, “Yes, sir.” the woman said, before walking off and the Doctor rejoined the two, “And why are you telling them that?” Martha asked, “This lot still have got one foot in the Dark Ages. If I tell them the truth, they'll panic and think it was witchcraft.” The Doctor said, “Okay, what was it then?” Martha said, “Witchcraft.” Alyssa said,
The three went back into the Elephant ,which was the hotel Shakespeare was at, with Shakespeare before one of his servants came in and said “I got you rooms, Sir Doctor. You and Miss Smith are just across the landing. With Miss Jones right next door, “Poor Lynley. So many strange events. Not least of all, this land of Freedonia where a woman can be a doctor?” Shakespeare said, “Where a woman can do what she likes.” Martha said, “And you, Sir Doctor, and Miss Smith How can a man so young have eyes so old?” Shakespeare said , glancing at between the two of them, “We do a lot of reading.” The Doctor said, “A trite reply. Yeah, that's what I'd do.” Shakespeare said, before looking at Alyssa, “And you, your eyes are old like his, but there’s something else hidden in them, something I can’t quite put my finger on maybe untold wisdom?” he said making Alyssa glance nervously at the Doctor before Shakespeare turned his attention back to Martha, “And you? You look at them like you're surprised they exist. they are as much of a puzzle to you as they are to me.” “I think we should say goodnight.” Martha said, before she left, leaving the Alyssa and the Doctor alone with Shakespeare, “I must work. I have a play to complete. But I'll get my answers tomorrow, Doctor, Alyssa, and I'll discover more about you and why this constant performance of yours.” “All the world's a stage.” The Doctor said, making Alyssa smirk at him “Hmm. I might use that. Goodnight, Doctor, Alyssa.”“good night.” Alyssa said, before she wnet to the door before waiting for the Doctor, “Nighty night, Shakespeare.” the Doctor said before he joined Alyssa and they went to their room.
Alyssa sat on the bed as the Doctor paced the room thinking, before a knock on the door sounded, and the Doctor opened it to reveal Martha who walked in, holding a candle “It's not exactly five star, is it?” She said, “Oh, it'll do. I've seen worse.” The Doctor said, looking about the room, “I haven't even got a toothbrush.” Martha said, “Oh. Er.” The Doctor started before he dug through his pockets and produced a toothbrush, “Contains Venusian spearmint.” he finished handing the toothbrush to Martha, “So, magic and stuff. That's a surprise. It's all a little bit Harry Potter.” Martha said, making Alyssa laugh “yeah just a bit,” she said, “Wait till you read book seven.Oh, I cried.” The Doctor said, “But is it real, though? I mean, witches, black magic and all that, it's real?” Martha said, “No, at least not that kind,” Alyssa said, “Well, how am I supposed to know? I've only just started believing in time travel. Give me a break.” Martha said, “Looks like witchcraft, but it isn't. Can't be.” The Doctor said, as he sat down next to Alyssa, “There are many things in space that looks like what humans would describe as witchcraft, but it's not,” Alyssa said reminding the Doctor. “Right There's such a thing as psychic energy, but a human couldn't channel it like that. Not without a generator the size of Taunton and I think we'd have spotted that. No, there's something I'm missing, Martha. Something really close, staring me right in the face and I can't see it.” The Doctor said, “Maybe you’re looking too closely, look at the bigger picture.” Alyssa said, making the Doctor nod at her, “Still, can't be helped. You're a novice, never mind. I'll take you back home tomorrow.” The Doctor said looking at Martha, “great” Martha said, before she turned and stomped out, “stop being so rude to her!” Alyssa said condensingly, “Am I being rude? Really?” He said, as if he was oblivious to how rude he was, making Alyssa shake her head before lying back, the Doctor soon joining her, “Is there any hints you can give me? Is this one of your episodes?” the Doctor said, making Alyssa turn on her side towards him, before she combed through her brain trying to remember this situation, which she successfully did, “It was, Hint: sides, thats all I can really tell you though, it's weird this time. with the lost play, and all.” “yeah I know, Sides, what does that mean? sides?” the Doctor said as he started wrecking his brain, making Alyssa chuckle. Silence followed as the Doctor continued to wreck through his brain before a scream sounded and the two including Martha ran to investigate the scream. it came from Shakespeare’s room and Shakespeare was awoken by the scream as well. while his female servant was dead on the floor, “What? What was that?” Shakespeare said, as the Doctor kneeled down to the female as Martha and Alyssa both went to the window, where a figure was on a broom flying around, “Her heart gave out. She died of fright.” “Doctor?” Alyssa and Martha said together, which caused him to join them by the window. “A witch.” Martha said,
Sunrise soon came as Shakespeare finally came to about what happened “Oh, sweet Dolly Bailey. She sat out three bouts of the plague in this place when we all ran like rats. But what could have scared her so? She had such enormous spirit.” Shakespeare said, “Rage, rage against the dying of the light.” The Doctor quoted, “I might use that.” Shakespeare said, “You can't. It's someone else's.” The Doctor said.“But the thing is, Lynley drowned on dry land, Dolly died of fright, and they were both connected to you.” Martha said, “You're accusing me?” Shakespeare said, “No she isn’t, she is just pointing out the obvious,” Alyssa said, “I saw a witch, big as you like, flying, cackling away, and you've written about witches.” Martha said, and Alyssa closed her eyes as it hadn’t happened yet“I have? When was that?” Shakespeare questioned, “not yet, Martha, Not yet.” Alyssa said “Peter Streete spoke of witches.” Shakespeare said, “Who's Peter Streete?” Martha said, “Our builder. He sketched the plans to the Globe.” Shakespeare said, “The architect.” The Doctor said and Alyssa looked at him as if he was supposed to realized something which he quickly did, “Hold on. The architect! The architect! The Globe! Come on!” before getting up and rushing towards the globe. The Doctor stood in the middle as he counted out the sides “thats why you said sides.” the Doctor said “The columns there, right? Fourteen sides. I've always wondered, but I never asked.” he said before he turned and walked towards Shakespeare “Tell me, Will. Why fourteen sides?” “Now’s he getting it.” Alyssa said, as she stood by Martha and Shakespeare.“It was the shape Peter Streete thought best, that's all. Said it carried the sound well.” Shakespeare said “Fourteen. Why does that ring a bell? Fourteen.” The Doctor said, combing his brains, “There's fourteen lines in a sonnet.” Martha offered trying to help, “So there is. Good point. Words and shapes following the same design. Fourteen lines, fourteen sides, fourteen facets. Oh, my head. Tetradecagon. Think, think, think! Words, letters, numbers, lines!” The Doctor said, “when do shapes and numbers correlate Doctor?” Alyssa said, which just made the Doctor scratch his head more, “This is just a theatre.” Shakespeare said, “But even a theatre can be magic, Shakespeare, you should know that.” Alyssa said, “Stand on this stage, say the right words with the right emphasis at the right time. Oh, you can make men weep, or cry with joy. Change them. You can change people's minds just with words in this place. But if you exaggerate that.” The Doctor said, “It's like your police box. Small wooden box with all that power inside.” Martha said, “Oh. Oh, Martha Jones, I like you. Tell you what, though. Peter Streete would know. Can I talk to him?” the Doctor said, “You won't get an answer. A month after finishing this place, lost his mind.” Shakespeare said, “Why? What happened?” Martha asked, “Started raving about witches, hearing voices, babbling. His mind was addled.” Shakespeare said, “Where is he now?” The Doctor asked, “Bedlam.” Shakespeare said,“What's Bedlam?” Martha said, “Bethlem Hospital. The madhouse.” Shakespeare said, “We're going to go there. Right now. Come on.” The Doctor said, before walking towards the exit, the three following,“Wait! I'm coming with you. I want to witness this at first hand.” Shakespeare said, following them, as they walked through the streets towards Bethlem hospital as Shakespeare walked with Martha, “So, tell me of Freedonia, where women can be doctors, writers, actors.” Shakespeare“This country's ruled by a woman.” Martha said, “Ah, she's royal. That's God's business. Though you are a royal beauty.” Shakespeare said, “Whoa, Nelly. I know for a fact you've got a wife in the country.” Martha said, stopping and turning to him, “But Martha, this is Town.” “Doesn’t matter Will, still wrong.” Alyssa said, as she turned around, making Shakespeare blink at her, “Come on. We can all have a good flirt later.” The Doctor said, “ Is that a promise, Doctor?” Shakespeare said, making Alyssa shake her head, “Oh, fifty seven academics just punched the air. Now move!” the Doctor said, before they rushed off again.
They finally made it to the hospital and one of the keepers followed them as they went to see Peter Streete, “Does my Lord Doctor wish some entertainment while he waits? I'd whip these madmen. They'll put on a good show for you. Mad dog in Bedlam.” The man said, “No, I don't!” The Doctor said, before the five stopped “Well, wait here, my lords, while I make him decent for the ladies.” the man said, before walking away, “So this is what you call a hospital, yeah? Where the patients are whipped to entertain the gentry? And you put your friend in here?” Martha said, “Oh, it's all so different in Freedonia.” Shakespeare said, “It doesn’t matter if it's different Shakespeare, there’s a fine line between right and not right. Do you know where that line is?” Alyssa said, making Shakespeare stare at her lost for words, “But you're clever. Do you honestly think this place is any good?” Martha said, “I've been mad. I've lost my mind. Fear of this place set me right again. It serves its purpose.” “Scaring a person into being right again is no way to treat madness. It may have worked for you but others? not so much.” Alyssa said shaking her head, there was a shred of sympathy for the man but it was just a shred, due to her knowing what had caused it. “Mad in what way?” Martha asked “You lost your son.” the Doctor said, “My only boy. The Black Death took him. I wasn't even there.” Shakespeare said, “I didn't know. I'm sorry.” Martha said, “It made me question everything. The futility of this fleeting existence. To be or not to be. Oh, that's quite good.” Shakespeare said, “You should write that down.” The Doctor said, “Maybe not. A bit pretentious?” Shakespeare said, “This way, my lord!” the keeper yelled, and the group continued to Streete’s cell, where a hunched man with his back turned, they assumed that this was Peter Streete, “They can be dangerous, my lord. Don't know their own strength.” “I think it helps if you don't whip them. Now get out!” the Doctor said, and the keeper left, “Peter? Peter Streete?” Alyssa said, walking over to him,“He's the same as he was. You'll get nothing out of him.” Shakespeare said, and Alyssa just shook her head, “Peter?” Alyssa said, before she touched his shoulder, and he rose his head staring at her, she looked up at the Doctor before letting out a sigh and raised her fingers to his head, and dove into his head, trying to help him get some clarity in order to help them. “Peter, I'm Alyssa, Go into the past. One year ago. Let your mind go back. Back to when everything was fine and shining. Everything that happened in this year since happened to somebody else. It was just a story. A Winter's Tale. Let go. That's it. That's it, just let go.” She was successful she laid him down and sat next to him, “Tell me the story, Peter. Tell me about the witches.” “Witches spoke to Peter. In the night, they whispered. They whispered. Got Peter to build the Globe to their design. Their design! The fourteen walls. Always fourteen. When the work was done they snapped poor Peter's wits.” Peter said, “Where did Peter see the witches? Where in the city? Peter, tell me. You've got to tell me where were they?” Alyssa said, “All Hallows Street.” Peter finally said, “Too many words.” A female voice said, causing everyone to jump back, Except Alyssa who looked up with a serious look on her face “Oooh I was wondering when you would show up Doomfinger was it?” Alyssa said, causing the woman to reel back in surprise, “there has been enough death for one night.” she said staring at her, as she brought out her gun and pointed it at her, she glanced at the Doctor who realized that she had stopped Steepe from being killed, and started towards “Witch! I'm seeing a witch!” Shakespeare said, “Doctor 14 remember?” Alyssa said, as he walked by her and “Humanoid female, uses shapes and words to channel energy. Ah! Fourteen! That's it! Fourteen!” The Doctor said, as he realized what she was trying to tell him, “The fourteen stars of the Rexel planetary configuration!” he said before pointing at the creature “ Creature, I name you Carrionite!” who screamed and disappeared in a flash of light, “What did you do?” Martha asked, “I named her. The power of a name. That's old magic.” the Doctor said, “But there's no such thing as magic.” Martha said, “it's just a different sort of science.” Alyssa said, as she put her gun away, “You lot, you chose mathematics. Given the right string of numbers, the right equation, you can split the atom. Carrionites use words instead.” The Doctor said, “Use them for what?” “the end of the world.” Alyssa said “but she didn’t even do anything! and you treated her like some threat.” Martha said, “ they are a threat, she would’ve killed him, you remember what I said, when I first met you?” Alyssa said, and Martha nodded, “there’s more important matters, we need to stop them.”
They quickly made their way back to where Shakespeare was staying and started coming up with ways of stopping the Carrionites, “The Carrionites disappeared way back at the dawn of the universe. Nobody was sure if they were real or legend.” The Doctor said,“Well, I'm going for real.” Shakespeare said, “But what do they want?” Martha said , “A new empire on Earth?” Alyssa said, “A world of bones and blood and witchcraft.” the Doctor said, “But how?” Martha said “I'm looking at the man with the words.” The Doctor said, “Me? But I've done nothing.” Shakespeare said, “Hold on, though. What were you doing last night, when that Carrionite was in the room?” “Finishing the play.” Shakespeare said, “What happens on the last page?” Alyssa said, “The boys get the girls. They have a bit of a dance. It's all as funny and thought provoking as usual. Except those last few lines. Funny thing is, I don't actually remember writing them.” Shakespeare said “And that’s where they came in.” Alyssa said, “They used you. They gave you the final words like a spell, like a code. Love's Labours Won. It's a weapon. The right combination of words, spoken at the right place, with the shape of the Globe as an energy converter! The play's the thing! And yes, you can have that.” the Doctor said, as they started planning on what to do. Night soon fell as they investigated a map in order to find All Hallows Street was, “”All Hallows Street. There it is.” The Doctor said, pointing at a street on a map, Martha, Alyssa, we'll track them down. Will, you get to the Globe. Whatever you do, stop that play.” “I'll do it. All these years I've been the cleverest man around. Next to you, I know nothing.” Shakespeare said, “Oh, don't complain.” Martha said, “I'm not. It's marvellous. Good luck, Doctor.” Shakespeare said, “Good luck, Shakespeare. Once more unto the breach.” The Doctor said, before the three of them left, Shakespeare saying after them“I like that. Wait a minute, that's one of mine.” Causing Alyssa to poke her head back “Oh, just shift!” she said before she rushed off to All Hallows street with the Doctor and Martha, “All Hallows Street, but which house?” The Doctor said, as they looked at all the houses, “The thing is, though am I missing something here? The world didn't end in 1599. It just didn't. Look at me. I'm living proof.” Martha said, “Oh, how to explain the mechanics of the infinite temporal flux? I know. Back to the Future. It's like Back to the Future.” the Doctor said, “The film?” Martha asked, “No, the novelisation. Yes, the film. Marty McFly goes back and changes history.” The Doctor said, “And he starts fading away. Oh my God, am I going to fade?” Martha said, “You and the entire future of the human race. It ends right now in 1599 if we don't stop it. But which house?” the Doctor said, before a door swung open for them “Ah. Make that witch house.” The Doctor said, “You know this is a trap right?” Alyssa said, as the three walked in, “I take it we're expected.” The Doctor said, as they saw a female waiting for them, “Oh, I think Death has been waiting for you a very long time.” a female voice said, “Right then, it's my turn. I know how to do this. I name thee Carrionite!” Martha said, and the carrionite gasped but nothing happened, “What did I do wrong? Was it the finger?” “The power of a name works only once.” The woman said before she looked at Martha, “Observe. I gaze upon this bag of bones and now I name thee Martha Jones.” while pointing her finger as Martha, who fell backwards unconcious into the Doctor’s arms. who set her on the floor, “ What have you done?” The Doctor said, “Only sleeping, alas. It's curious. The name has less impact. She's somehow out of her time. And as for you, Sir Doctor.” The Carronite said, trying to pull the same with him “Fascinating. There is no name. Why would a man hide his title in such despair? Oh, but look. There's still one word with the power that aches.” “The naming won't work on me.” The Doctor said, “But your heart grows cold.” She started “There is one name that still proves worth,” She said before suddenly turned to Alyssa “I name thee Alyssa!” Alyssa played the same game she did she gasped and shook her body a bit, but laughed “Oh Im sorry did that not work the way you expected? Alyssa isn’t my real name. my name is among the stars, sure but neither is that my name. The Carronites vanished where did you go?” “The Eternals found the right word to banish us into deep darkness.” the carronite said, “And how did you escape?” the Doctor said,“New words. New and glittering, from a mind like no other.” “Shakespeare.” Alyssa said, “His son perished. The grief of a genius. Grief without measure. Madness enough to allow us entrance.” she said, “How many of you?” The Doctor said, “Just the three. But the play tonight shall restore the rest. Then the human race will be purged as pestilence. And from this world we will lead the universe back into the old ways of blood and magic.” “Hmm. Busy schedule. But first you've got to get past us.” the Doctor said, “Oh, that should be a pleasure, considering one my enemies has such a handsome shape.” she said, walking towards the Doctor “Now, that's one form of magic that's definitely not going to work on me.” The Doctor said, “Oh, I know but we'll see.” the female said, as she started advancing on the Doctor, putting her hand on his face, Alyssa walked closer to the Doctor, and felt a pair of scissors snip her hair as she used the Doctor’s distraction, to get something from Alyssa. who looked at the carrionite shocked, “What did you do?” The Doctor said, noticing what had happened, “Souvenir.” she said, “Well, give it back.” Alyssa said, dashing forwards to grab it from her, the Doctor doing the same only for Lilith to fly out the window “Well, that's just cheating.” the Doctor said, “Behold, Doctor. humans to Carrionites are nothing but puppets.” she said as she wrapped the hair around a doll “Now, you might call that magic. I'd call that a DNA replication module.” The Doctor said, as the realization set in, “What use is your science now?” she said, right before she stabbed the doll causing Alyssa to scream and fall to the floor the Doctor grabbing her, before the carrionite flew away, the Doctor looking up as Martha woke up “Oh my God, Alyssa Don't worry, I've got you.” Martha said as she got ready to help before realizing the Doctor didn’t seem that worried, “Hold on. Two hearts?” And Alyssa opened her eyes, “That’s a new feeling,” She said before she got up only for her to hunch over the Doctor getting up and grabbing her, “I’ve only got one heart beating, thats weird.” Alyssa said, making the Doctor roll his eyes before he hit her on the chest, before hitting the same place on the back. “oh wow such a weird feeling. Thanks doc.” she said before getting up, “Both hearts beating again, what are you guys standing around for come on the globe!” before she rushed off the two following, “We're going the wrong way!” Alyssa and Martha said as the Doctor started running in the opposite direction, the two following him “No, we're not!” The Doctor said before he realized they were correct and turned around and yelled “We're going the wrong way!” as they finally ran towards the globe theatre. Stopping when they saw red clouds coming from the theatre. “I told thee so! I told thee!” The preacher yelled out, “Stage door!” The Doctor said, before they ran forward and into the globe theatre and right into Shakespeare “Stop the play. I think that was it. Yeah, I said, stop the play!” The Doctor said, “I hit my head.” Shakespeare said, “Yeah don’t rub it you’ll go bald.” Alyssa said, before screams sounded, “I think that's our cue!” The Doctor said, him and Alyssa rushed off onto the stage, Martha and Shakespeare soon joining them, as the rest of the Carrionites started flying out of an orb they could see the others holding. “Come on, Will! History needs you!” the Doctor said, “But what can I do?” Shakespeare said. “Reverse it!” Alyssa said. “How am I supposed to do that?” Shakespeare asked, “The shape of the Globe gives words power, but you're the wordsmith, the one true genius. The only man clever enough to do it.” The Doctor said, “But what words? I have none ready!” Shakespeare said, “Are you kidding me? You're William Shakespeare!” Alyssa shouted, “But these Carrionite phrases, the need such precision.” Shakespeare said, “Trust yourself. When you're locked away in your room, the words just come, don't they, like magic. Words of the right sound, the right shape, the right rhythm. Words that last forever. That's what you do, Will. You choose perfect words. Do it. Improvise.” The Doctor said, “Close up this din of hateful, dire decay, decomposition of your witches' plot. You thieve my brains, consider me your toy. My doting Doctor tells me I am not!Foul Carrionite spectres, cease your show! Between the points” Shakespeare shouted, before looking at the Doctor for advice, “Seven six one three nine oh!” The Doctor said, and Shakespeare repeated them “Seven six one three nine oh! Banished like a tinker's cuss, I say to thee” Shakespeare shouted, before looking at the others again “Expelliarmus!” Martha and Alyssa yelled together, “Expelliarmus!” The Doctor said,“Expelliarmus!” Shakespeare repeated and that seemed to stop the Carrionites as they started getting sucked into the Tornado they created “Good old JK!” The Doctor said, as they watched the Carrionites be sucked in, suddenly the doors behind them blew open and the pages to the play got sucked up along with them.“Love's Labours Won. There it goes.” the Doctor said, as the storm subsided and the crowd started clapping “They think it was all special effects?” Martha said, “Your effect is special indeed.” Shakespeare sai“It's not your best line.” Martha said, as the three of them bowed as the Doctor raced up and picked up the orb the Carrionites left behind. The Next morning, they were sitting in the globe theatre on a stage while the Doctor looked through the prop section, “And I say, a heart for a hart and a dear for a deer.” Shakespeare said, as he finished a joke he was telling Martha, “I don't get it.” Martha said, “Then give me a joke from Freedonia.” he asked, “Okay, Shakespeare walks into a pub and the landlord says, Oi mate, you're Bard.” Martha said, causing Shakespeare to laugh, “That's brilliant. Doesn't make sense, mind you, but never mind that. Now come here.” Shakespeare said before putting his arm around Martha and pulled her towards him, “I've only just met you.” Martha said, “The Doctor may never kiss you. Why not entertain a man who will?” Shakespeare said, “I don't know how to tell you this, oh great genius, but your breath doesn't half stink.” Martha said, making Alyssa break out laughing, as the Doctor entered wearing a Ruff around his neck and holding a skull making Alyssa laugh harder,“What?” The Doctor said, and Alyssa pointed at the Ruff, “you look ridiculous.” Alyssa said, “Oi” The Doctor said “now who’s being rude,” he said teasing her, before turning to the other two. “Good props store back there. I'm not sure about this though. Reminds me of a Sycorax.” Holding up the skull he had, “Sycorax. Nice word. I'll have that off you as well.” Shakespeare said, “Doctor dear, you should be on ten percent.” Alyssa said, and the Doctor nodded “How's your head?” the Doctor asked “Still aching.” Shakespeare said, and the Doctor started taking off the Ruff, “Here, I got you this.” the Doctor said, before he put it on Shakespeare “Neck brace. Wear that for a few days till it's better, although you might want to keep it. It suits you.” he said as Shakespeare started looking more like his portrait. “What about the play?” Martha said, “Gone. I looked all over. Every single copy of Love's Labours Won went up in the sky.” The Doctor said, “My lost masterpiece.” Shakespeare said, “You could write it up again.” “Yeah, best not Will.” Alyssa said“There's still power in those words. Maybe it should best stay forgotten.” the Doctor said, “Oh, but I've got new ideas. Perhaps it's time I wrote about fathers and sons, in memory of my boy, my precious Hamnet.” Shakespeare, “Hamnet?” Martha said, “That's him.” Shakespeare said, “Hamnet?” Martha just repeated, “What's wrong with that?” Shakespeare said, “Anyway, time we were off. I've got a nice attic in the Tardis where this lot can scream for all eternity, and I've got to take Martha back to Freedonia.” The Doctor said, “You mean travel on through time and space.” Shakespeare said, making Alyssa break out in laughter, “You what?” The Doctor said in shock, “You and Alyssa are from another world like the Carrionites, and Martha is from the future. It's not hard to work out.” Shakespeare “Brilliant you are Shakespeare really brilliant” Alyssa said, as she walked over to Shakespeare “I never had a shot with you did I?” “no.” Alyssa said shaking her head, “Well I will consider that a good thing, you and him make a great couple.” Shakespeare said“people keep telling me that Will,” Alyssa admitted, “Well maybe then it's time you stopped being told, and started listening.” Shakespeare said giving her a pointed look, she blinked she opened her mouth to say something else but he just turned away from her, “We're alike in many ways, Doctor. I think I finally figured out what was in your eyes Alyssa, untold wisdom and spirit, don’t ever lose that.” he said before turning to Martha “Martha, let me say goodbye to you in a new verse. A sonnet for my Dark Lady. Shall I compare thee to a summer's day? Thou art more lovely and more temperate.” but was interrupted by two of his actors running in shouting his name. “Will, you'll never believe it. She's here! She's turned up!” one of them said, “We're the talk of the town. She heard about last night. She wants us to perform it again.” The other actor said, “Who?” Martha said, “Her Majesty. She's here.” one of the Actors said, before fanfare started playing and Queen Elizabeth walked in, “Queen Elizabeth the First!” The Doctor said, “Doctor?” Elizabeth said, “What?” The Doctor said, “My sworn enemy.” Elizabeth said, “What?” The Doctor said again, “Off with his head!” Elizabeth said, “What” the Doctor said once again making Alyssa shake her head as she grabbed his arm “Come on!” Alyssa shouted, “Never mind what, just run! See you, Will, and thanks.” Martha said, as the three of them ran out and over to the Tardis,“Stop in the name of the Queen!” One of the queen's guard shouted, “What have you done to upset her?” Martha asked “How should I know? Haven't even met her yet. That's time travel for you. Still, can't wait to find out.” The Doctor said, right when they reached the Tardis and Alyssa brought out her key before letting Martha in, “That's something to look forward to. Ooo!” The Doctor said as they both saw archers about to fire at them, only for them to duck inside the Tardis just as an Arrow hit the outer door.
