Where The Winds Blows
05:53, 8 March 2026Episode Red Flags
Maeve was having a peaceful night in her room.
She didn't need sleep that night, so she started doodling and playing quietly, ensuring that Bobby and Athena didn't wake up. However, Bobby woke up some time later.
Maeve could hear him leave his room.
She quickly pushed the things aside and went back into bed, not bothering to pull her blanket over herself. She heard the door creak open slightly, allowing a silver of white light to beam over her head.
It was a good thing she was faced the other way; Bobby would have seen her force her laugh into a tight smile so she couldn't make a noise.
Bobby entered the room, pulled the blanket over Maeve and left.
Maeve opened her eyes and turned her head to the closed door. Bobby didn't know she was awake, so why did he wake up at 6 in the morning?
They didn't have work until later, and Maeve doubted the fact that he would awaken just to pull a blanket over her.
There was a hidden reason why, and Maeve wanted to know. Suddenly, the front door opened and closed. Bobby had left the house, which was weird because where would he go?
She could sneak out after him though, she was smart enough to do so.
But Bobby was smarter. He would know if someone was following him, it would blow her cover and put her at a risk of being grounded. Being grounded was not fun, thought it was better than being grounded in the lab.
Being grounded meant they would torture you for a certain amount of time.
Maeve questioned how she still loved the scientists who made her, she was rarely hugged and family dinner was her eating behind the glass enclosure like an animal.
The food was still good though.
By the time she was up and out of bed, and dressed for work, Bobby had already returned.
"Hey Daddy, where'd you go?" Maeve asked, packing her bag. "Just for a drive around the block, thought I could get some fresh air." Bobby replied, with a smile.
A fake smile.
Maeve knew his real smile, he was lying.
Yet, she just smiled back. There was nothing she could really do about it anyways, all she could do now is get on with the day and go to work like everyone else.
The day went about quietly until a call came in about someone's dog bringing home a hand.
It was a very very windy day.
"Santa Ana's?"
"Yeah, these super strong, dry winds that cook up the craziest calls even if it's not related to the wind." Buck explained. "But we have seen severed hands before." Eddie said.
"Yeah, usually in the general vicinity of its owner." Buck put his hands in his pockets, veering his head to look at Eddie. "Hen, what do we think?" Bobby interrupted.
"It doesn't look cut off."
"Wound's pretty jagged, maybe blown off?" Chimney said, looking up at Hen. "The fireworks. Someone was setting off fireworks, somewhere over there." The lady who called pointed.
Bobby looked in that direction and back at his team, with a serious look. "Alright, looks like we're going door to door."
Maeve checked about a dozen houses, but all of the people inside the house had their hands intact. The chances of finding the owner was looking pretty bleak for a hot second.
"Nothing, cap." Maeve shrugged, walking back to the group. Then, someone walked up to them, asking if he could lend a hand with anything.
Maeve noticed that he was holding his right hand in a towel, it was dark but she thought she saw a little blood on it. "We're all good." Eddie refused politely, turning back to the group.
The guy nodded, and suddenly grabbed the ice cooler and took off running. Everyone watched as he ran before Bobby sighed, "Maeve, could you..." he asked, pointing at him.
"On it."
Maeve shape-shifted into a wolf-dog and ran after him, she kept a distance before coming in front of him so the man could trip and drop the ice cooler.
Which he did.
She shape-shifted back and stood over the guy, and her eyes widen at his hand. "Cap! Two hands, but nine fingers." She yelled, holding up this guy's hand.
"If you're missing a finger, who's missing a hand?"
The guy looked over at a nearby truck, and there was a man in it, he was sweating and didn't look good.
"Good girl, go find his finger!" Bobby instructed.
Maeve started to look around, and 5 minutes later found something else.
Turn out, there was a third victim who was missing a thumb. One of Maeve's most eventful nights ever, she knew that firework were no good.

...
Maeve sat in the living room, watching TV as Bobby talked with his AA sponsor. He was a cool guy, very funny too.
He came over to congratulate Bobby on his 5 year sober achievement. "You know I say it's four years." Bobby said. "He's lying. It's five." Maeve chimed, giggling as she walked over.
"It's still a hell of an achievement." Wendall smiled.
"Speaking of which, when were you going to tell me Maeve finished her probationary year?" Wendall chuckled, patting her head. "Sorry about that, it slipped my mind to tell the AA."
"Well, you don't want to get a demerit, now do you Bobby?" He joked, making Bobby laugh. "Don't worry Wendall, I'll give him one." Maeve whispered, giving him a thumbs up.
"I bet you will." He smiled back.
Something no one told Maeve about shifts during Santa Ana season is about how all the crazy stuff only happens when it's dark outside.
The next call landed the 118 outside the supposed 'Murder House'.
A police officer got his head banged when he got startled by a piece of plastic that was flying outside. Maeve walked around the house with Chimney, scanning over the cracks of the old house.
"Dispatch to house 118, could you stop the house from calling?" Asked the dispatcher over the phone. "The house is still calling?" Maeve replied, pressing her radio.
"Yeah, it has called 8 times since the police came. Please make it stop, please."
Chimney looked around and eventually found the problem. Some frayed wires next to the phone, it must have set off an alarm which calls 911 when tripped.
"Dispatch, we have solved the problem. It should end right about... now."
"Copy that, 118. And seriously, thank you."
Maeve looked at Chimney who was staring up at the ceiling weirdly. "You're welcome."
"Did you just say you're welcome to the house?" Maeve snorted, shining her flashlight in Chimney's face. "This house is haunted, and I have manners." He said, gesturing to the wall as one hand shielded his face from the light.
"Alright then... bye bye house." Maeve said, patting the wall. "There you go!" Chimney chuckled, standing up.
"... Nah, it's just weird."
...
Maeve came out of the bunker room suddenly, running upstairs to find her bag.
"Hey, aren't you supposed to be asleep?" Hen leaned over the counter, looking at Maeve with a parental look. "Buck's asleep, and I refuse to sleep with an open opportunity like this."
Maeve lifted the bag to herself and searched for a pen, as Chimney got an idea. "I'll grab my phone." The paramedic said excitedly, moving towards the couch. "Got the pen, let's go."
They went back into the bunk bed room and climbed onto Buck's bed, Maeve opened her pen and started to doodle on his face as Chimney filmed.
Suddenly, there were some shouts from outside and Buck started to wake up. Maeve shape-shifted into a bat and hanged on the ceiling in a corner, picking up Chimney with her power.
Buck got out of bed and ran out of the room, not seeing the two on the ceiling. "We should go see what that is about." Chimney said, as Maeve shape-shifted back.
They ran outside and Chimney immediately covered Maeve's eyes before they reached the fire trucks.
"You guys do this all the time." She sighed annoyingly. "For a good reason." Bobby replied, Chimney took his hands off Maeve's eyes once the lady was wrapped in a towel.
"Woah. What is she doing here?" She asked, as Bobby wrapped a blanket around her. When the lady turned to Bobby, she screamed bloody murder, scaring everyone.
"Hey, Hey, it's okay." Hen exclaimed, grabbing her gently. They led the girl, named Lizzy to the truck to sit down as they assessed her medically.
"How do you sleep-drive without crashing?" Maeve asked. "I have no idea." Buck replied, turning to her. Lizzy looked at Buck and snorted, while Bobby looked away and Eddie started pointing.
"What?"
"You got something on your..." Bobby replied, still looking away to stop laughing. Maeve shape-shifted into a bird and flew to the top, again picking up Chimney.
Eddie handed Buck a mirror and Buck screamed the moment he saw his face. "Oh come on- hey! You two! Get down now!"
Later, Maeve sat on the roof with the others, feeling the cold breeze of the wind. Buck came out a minute later, his face clean from the ink. "Look who finally came." Hen smiled.
"I finally got the ink off." He answered, glaring at Chimney. "Why are you staring at me? She's the one who drew on you."
"Yeah but you videoed it, Maeve is easy to forgive after like 5 minutes."
"Thank you Buck." Maeve grinned.
The group started talking and Bobby got up, staring out into the open like he was monologuing in his head. "Everything good, Cap?" Maeve asked Bobby, raising her head from her iPad.
"Smell that?" Bobby asked.
Maeve did.
It was an unforgettable smell which leaves its smoke residue in your head, you never really forget it.
"Fire."
Then, the alarms went off. Definitely a fire.
By the time they reached the area, it was morning.
A small area was burning in the bright sunlight, leaving a black mark on the beige ground. Maeve shape-shifted into a dragon and started putting it down, stomping on every spark of red she saw.
Maeve stomped and stomped, hissing water at every flame she could. After the fire was put out, Maeve dosed the surrounding trees in water to try and reduce the chances of it spreading.
She landed on the ground and noticed Bobby was kneeling with his head down, "Cap?" She tiled her head, walking over. Bobby looked at her and back at the body, and his eyes widened.
"Eddie please, distract her... she... she can't see this." He asked, tears stinging his eyes. Eddie looked at Maeve and walked over, blocking her view. "Uh hey kid, um... Cap just wants a minute."
"Why? What's going on?" She asked curiously, trying to go around Eddie.
Eddie picked her up and sighed as he carried her away. "Cap, he... there was a victim... it's Cap's friend..."
"What? Who was it?" Maeve asked, trying to look over the army medic's shoulder. "Wait, kid-..." Eddie tried to stop her, but the little firefighter had incredible hearing.
"Oh, Wendall..."
Wendall?
Oh no....
The team got back to the firehouse and stood outside the truck, waiting for Cap to say something.
"I'm fine. Let's get washed up and go home. Maybe we can all get some sleep." Bobby said calmly, turning around and leaving. He didn't say anything on the way home either.
He entered the house and just sat on the couch, without a word.
She peeked out from her room, watching Athena talk to him. He sounded blank, his voice held almost no real emotion. Empty, yet Maeve could hear the slightest hint of sadness.
A couple hours later, Maeve was doodling in her room when she got a call from Eddie.
"Hey Eds."
"Hey kid, you're on with Hen, Chim and Buck."
"What is this? Santa Ana's annual call?" Maeve joked, scribbling in her book. "How's Bobby?" Hen asked. "So far, so not good. I think he feels guilty for some reason." Maeve sighed.
"How about you?"
"Huh?"
"What about you? Didn't you know the guy as well?" Eddie asked. "Not too much but I'm hanging on, I'm mostly worried about Daddy. How about all of you?"
"Chim's obsessed about a house, I'm worried about my kid and Buck's..." Hen paused. "Officially responsible for the creation of a new life."
"Oh hey, the sperm thing worked." Maeve cheered, as she heard everyone else pause at the news. "Congrats!" Hen exclaimed.
"Wait, should we congratulate you?"
"Eddie is right. The etiquette of rules are kind of hazy."
"Let's ask Bobby. Maeve, could you go find him?" Buck asked. "Sure." Maeve took her iPad outside with her. But Bobby wasn't home, and Athena was asleep.
So Maeve retreated to her room, confused. "Uh... he's not home."
"What?"
"Let me call him?" Eddie shrugged, he clicked Bobby's contact and it rang for exactly 30 seconds before he declined. "He's not picking up, Maeve, you try, he always answers your calls."
"Alrighty." Maeve clicked on his contact, and it rang for a minute before he declined it. "He's not picking mine up either, he always picks up."
"Maybe he's really just busy." Buck suggested. "I hope so."
They talked for a couple more hours before Eddie and Buck left.
"Can you imagine not knowing your own child?" Hen asked. "Is this about Denny?" Maeve asked, sighing. "Because if it is, I gotta go, gotta obey the friendship code."
"Alright, alright, bye Maeve."
"Bye guys, see you at work tomorrow."
Maeve left the call and lied back on the floor.
The next time she woke up, she was in bed with her blanket over herself. The front door once again opened and closed, signalling that Bobby left again.
This time, Maeve followed him.
She stayed as a little bird, flying way high above him so he doesn't notice. Bobby stopped at the place of the fire, and put up some cross. Maeve stayed until he left and shape-shifted back.
She landed in front of the cross and stared at it. Then, she followed Bobby back but he didn't go home just yet.
Instead, he was watching this white mansion and its owners.
What was Bobby doing here?
