Mistakes And Wedding Cakes

Season Finale for season 5

Maeve returned to work as usual, she was almost getting used to being injured on the job. But Bobby would kill her for thinking that, and she was not about to get lectured.

The first call was about a man stuck, after running from people who were chasing him. "I remember you guys looking like this when you were high." Maeve chuckled, pointing at the people.

"Ha ha." Buck said sarcastically, rolling his eyes. "Buck, Ravi, secure the truck. Donato, you're with me. Maeve, we're going to need a spot."

"Uh Cap, I thought me and Maeve would go down." Buck asked. "You're not, I am." Bobby replied, walking away and that surprised the firefighters.

He wouldn't normally do this.

"Aye, aye, Cap." Maeve nodded. She extended her wings and flew down, circling the area where the man had fallen. She watched as Cap and Lucy lowered themselves down and it was honestly boring not doing it on her own.

Suddenly, she noticed that the cliff started to shake and everyone backed away from the truck. The ground beneath it started to give way and the fire engine fell.

Just before it hit Bobby or Lucy, Maeve grabbed it with her powers and held it up. The fire engine was kinds heavy and Maeve could only hold it for so long before she lost control and dropped it.

Thankfully, it didn't hit Bobby or Lucy this time.

But it was embarrassing.

And once they returned to the station, it was on every other channel. "Must we keep reliving this?" Chimney exclaimed, with his bowl of popcorn.

"It's on every channel." Ravi replied monotonously. "Then turn it off." Lucy suggested, and it was only until the channel started to talk about Jonah that Maeve lifted the remote and turned the TV off.

"That's better." Hen sighed.

The firefighter sat back on the couch and turned around and saw Buck talking with Bobby, Bobby looked disappointed but not usually the look he'd give Buck when he is disappointed in him.

Then, Bobby left and Buck was alone.

Realising what was happening, Maeve walked over there and patted the other firefighter's back. "Hey... Want me to talk to him?" she asked and Buck sat down on the chair.

"He still thinks it's his fault." Buck sighed frustratedly. "I know, he's been feeling guilty ever since I left the hospital. Don't worry, I'll talk to him, see if I can try and ease his mind." The younger firefighter suggested and it made Buck smile.

The kid was a bundle of sunshine, even in the dark. If there was one thing Jonah was right about, it was that she was always ready to lend a hand or an ear.

"Thanks Maeve..."

...

Later that day, Maeve was hanging out in her room when she heard glass breaking noises from outside. Curious, she left her room and went to investigate.

She walked into the kitchen and found Bobby in the kitchen, washing his hand under water. "Daddy?" She called out, looking worried. Bobby looked up at her but didn't say anything because Maeve immediately saw the blood.

"Oh no, your hand!" Maeve ran over to him, grabbing his arm. "I just broke a glass by mistake, no need to worry." Bobby said.

"This looks pretty bad." Maeve studied the wound as one hand remained in the air to lift the med-kit.

Once she had it nearby, Maeve opened it and took out gauze. "You have to be careful." She scolded, wrapping his hand. "What happened?" May asked.

"Daddy broke a glass and now he's hurt." Maeve grumbled. "I'll clean up, you go change your shirt."

Bobby looked down at the blood stain on his shirt and nodded, chuckling. "Yeah, probably not appetising for the party."

"What party?" May asked, and Maeve suddenly tightened the wrapping (making Bobby wince) and tied it off. "Uhhh..." Bobby stuttered. "Mom and Harry are going to walk through those door with a celebratory 'you're going to college' balloon and cake, aren't they?"

"Maybe act surprise at the USC sweaters."'Bobby left to go and change his shirt. The young firefighter used a broom and swept up the broken pieces of glass when she got view of a bloodied one.

She lifted it up so she could see it clearly, the edge was lined with Bobby's blood. But how does one break a glass and get hurt this way?

Maybe it was... intentional? Maeve didn't know what to think. She threw the glass into the trash and waited for everyone else to get home.

The next day, the calls went by fast.

Nothing too exciting, people with maggots in their head, boring stuff really. Or it was to her, the lady seemed really freaked out by the maggots and almost threw up.

"Hey, Maddie took her first call." Chimney stated, as they were in the fire engine. "No one died."

"Good for her." Maeve smiled. "That's great, both parts." Ravi added. Everyone started talking, and Maeve just watched out the window. She gleefully examined the passing trees until she saw Jonah.

The fire engine stopped and Maeve turned to her coworkers confused. But only Jonah was in the truck, smiling wickedly. "Now be a good little monster and shut up."

In his hand was the needle and Maeve screamed as Jonah swiped it at her.

And then... she woke up.

Maeve panted and huffed, shuffling to the end of the bed, hugging her knees so tight, as her nail digged into her skin.. A part of her urged to find her parents, but her body didn't move.

If she told Bobby she was getting nightmares about Jonah, his guilt would just grow.

Maeve blinked a few times, and calmed herself down.

Just a stupid nightmare.

She looked at the clock that read 3:46 am and ran a hand through her hair, it didn't look like she was going to sleep anytime soon. Maeve grabbed her jacket and quietly left the house from the backyard.

She walked for a bit before coming across the treehouse.

She climbed the ladders and sat on the top, looking up at the sky. She had to go back soon enough though, Maeve wouldn't want the secret of the treehouse to get out.

The night was quiet, all that could be heard are the crickets and small movements of animals.

It was peaceful, Maeve should go out here more often.

Especially for nightmares, this one was new. She had never dreamed about Jonah until today, maybe him kidnapping her set some triggers off in her head.

Yet, it felt so real. She could imagine her friends being here, the ones that died in the fire. They'd joke around, but it was always quietly. The stare of the scientists always made the hair at the back of their necks stand.

Now that she thought about it, Maeve doesn't know how much Bobby knows about the facility.

She hoped not to find out anytime soon.

It wouldn't be the funnest conversation topic.

After what felt like an hour, Maeve returned to the house and snuck back into her room. She wasn't planning on sleeping so she sat and drew.

The 'hour' she spent at the treehouse was actually 4 hours so Maeve had another hour before her alarm clock shrieked like banshee and she needed to change.

The next call the next day was a car crash, a pregnant lady and her husband. "Chimney, you check on Dad, Hen, you check on Mom." Bobby instructed.

"Buck, Ravi, I want the gurneys ready. Maeve, you're with me. Let's see if we can move this car." Maeve climbed onto the other car, and took a look.

She tried to open the door but it didn't budge, "Cap, this door is stuck. We're going to have to cut them out."

"Copy that, Buck-.."

"Saws and Jaws, on it, Cap." Buck said, bringing the equipment out.

After getting the two people out, Maeve rode on the back on the ambulance with the pregnant lady.

"Is my husband okay? Please tell me he's okay." The lady pleaded, she must really like her husband. "No other pain besides the contractions?" Hen asked and the lady shook her head.

After looking, Maeve nodded and took out her stethoscope. "Baby's heartbeat is strong. You're going to have the baby soon, Miss." Maeve smiled.

"But it's not going to be here."

Maeve and Hen rolled the lady into the hospital, with her husband next to her.

But the man didn't remember the lady or that she was pregnant. "That's bad..." Maeve winced. "Yeah, that's bad..." Hen repeated.

Let's hope that guy gets his memories back.

...

That call was the only interesting call that day.

Maeve went back home, awaiting Bobby who went out to get groceries. She was building the tallest building she could when Bobby came in, talking on the phone with Athena.

"Hey Daddy!" Maeve said. "Hey sweetie." Bobby shouted back from the kitchen, before going back to his call with Athena. That's when there was a knock at the door, "I'll get it." Maeve said, running to the door.

She opened it and outside stood Eddie.

"Eddie!" Maeve smiled. "Maeve! Good to see you, kid. Is Bobby-.." Eddie ruffled Maeve's head as Bobby walked to the door and paused when he saw the other man.

"Eddie, hi." Bobby smiled. "Hey Bobby. I don't come with any transfer requests, I swear." Eddie chuckled, putting his hands up.

Maeve went into her room to give Bobby and Eddie a chance to talk. However, it didn't mean she couldn't eavesdrop. They started talking about Jonah, how it wasn't Bobby's fault but Bobby said he should know because he was the captain.

Maeve could hear Eddie turn to leave but Bobby stopped him to ask if he really couldn't stay for dinner.

Eddie politely refused and left, something about Christopher having friends over.

Why wasn't she invited?

Maeve quietly opened the door as Bobby went into the kitchen, it was dead silent. Curious, she shape-shifted into a cat and sneaked around the corner to get a look.

She saw him take out something from his bag, whatever it was... it looked like alcohol.

Her heart pounded in her chest as she watched Bobby stare at the bottle. "No, don't do it..." Maeve pleaded in his mind, Bobby stared at the bottle and opened it, contemplating whether he should take a sip.

Before he thought of anything, Maeve launched out from behind the corner and grabbed the bottle in her mouth, taking it away from Bobby.

"What, hey..." Bobby said softly, Maeve shape-shifted back and lifted the bottle with her power. "No alcohol!" she scolded, put her hands on her hips.

She snapped her fingers and the bottle broke into pieces, turning into dust. Maeve took the dust and threw it in the trash in front of Bobby.

"Explain yourself." Maeve said, crossing her hands.

"I wasn't going to drink it."ย  Bobby sighed.

"It sure looked like you were about to. It's not worth relapsing because of Jonah of all people."

"It's not because of Jonah! I wasn't going to relapse!"

"Oh yeah, prove it." Maeve pouted, and Bobby rolled his eyes. "You know I can't."

"You can't keep blaming yourself because you missed some signs."

"I hired Jonah! I let him join us, I let him hurt innocent people and you! Maeve, he hurt you, he stabbed you and I let him into my house!?"

"It was just a little stab wound, I was fine!" Maeve waved her hand. "You were bleeding out!" Bobby shouted.

"Bobby, I have been hurt before, it's nothing new!"

Maeve saw Bobby's eyes widen slightly when she called him by his name instead of Dad.

"... But it scares me!... I lost my wife, my kids and you... I was so close to losing you so many times... I hired Jonah.. if I hadn't.. you would have been fine.."

Maeve frowned at Bobby, who was starting to tear up.

"I'm accident prone, I get it... and that scares you... but it wasn't your fault." Maeve said, taking Bobby's hand.

"Daddy, there was no way you could know Jonah was a bad man... even I didn't know... there are just some things we don't find out."

"But just because Jonah hurt us doesn't make it your fault, it was probably the department's for not doing a better background check."

"But it wasn't yours."

Bobby looked at Maeve and smiled.

"How did I find a little girl so sweet?"

"Beats me. But I will stay that way but you gotta say that it wasn't your fault." Maeve chirped. "I will get hurt a lot, but none of it will be your fault, okay?" Maeve said determinedly.

"Okay, okay..." Bobby chuckled, hugging Maeve. "I love you kid..."

"Love you too..."

...

Maeve was drinking orange juice in the kitchen with Bobby when she got a text from Denny.

Denny and Maeve Private Chat

Denny: Hey Maeve can I ask a favour :)

Maeve: anything man arson? stealing? >:3

Denny: Decorating a wedding for my mums?

Maeve: ooh a wedding

Maeve: i'll be there in 5

Maeve gulped down her orange juice and hopped out of her seat. "I'm going to Hen's house, you should come in 10 minutes, okay bye!" She told Bobby.

But it was very sped up so it sounded more like Hatsune Miku trying to rap.

"Uhh..okay?" Bobby replied, still holding his cup of coffee.

Maeve found comfort in flying way too fast for a reason that didn't include someone she loved being injured.

She landed in the backyard 4 minutes later, next to Denny.

"Where can I help, Game Master?" Maeve asked, saluting Denny. "Game Master?" Denny looked at her confused. "Yeah, I figured our cult could use names."

"Yeah that works. Okay, protector, your duty is to hang a banner high up." Denny said, pointing up at a tree.

Maeve lifted the banner and wrapped it around the tree, the words fell into place and it read 'Hen and Karen's Marriage'.

"Great job, I think it looks neat." Denny high-fived Maeve as he admired the work.

"Could you add some white pigeons?"

"If I find any, definitely." Maeve shape-shifted into a pigeon and took off. 20 minutes later, 5 white pigeons sat on the trees.

"Woah, thanks!" Denny exclaimed. "No problem, Game Master." Maeve smirked, fist bumping him.

"Denny, can you uhh move the birds before they poop all over the decorations?" Denny's grandmother asked. The two children turned to the old lady and to each other in silence.

"... Maeve."

"Cat attack?"

"Cat attack."

Maeve shape-shifted into a cat and climbed up the tree, after a minute the birds flew away except for one who was eaten by Maeve.

The ceremony was beautiful.

Denny walked Hen and Karen down the aisle and they kissed after saying some vowels.

Maeve liked the life she is having.

She does regret her friends won't live it with her, yet she honours their memory.

Maybe, just maybe...

She's not the monster she thinks she is.
