The FireFighter Hater
18:10, 21 February 2026SEASON FINALE OF S4
Maeve was hanging out with May when Eddie was shot.
Bobby was out and so was Athena, but the young firefighter didn't know where they were. Though, she swore she smelt something weird on Bobby the other day.
May got a call from Bobby, so she went outside to take the call. Maeve was playing with her blocks when May bursted through the doors, looking distressed.
"What's wrong?" Maeve asked. "Bobby called... he said that Eddie was in the hospital."
By the time May finished her sentence, the little girl was already out the door. She reached the hospital under 5 minutes, surprising the rest of the 118 as she did.
"How did you get here this fast?" Bobby asked. "I don't know..." She panted, looking panicked. "We heard, what exactly happened?" Chimney asked.
"Eddie got shot." The fire captain replied.
Maeve remembered being shot, it wasn't fun. I think it got worse after the guy kicked her, but it's all a theory. "Is he alive..?" Maeve asked.
"Yes, but there's a problem." Bobby sighed.
...
"There's a shooter targeting LAFD firefighters."
Bobby was announcing the entire firehouse, and everyone started to whisper amongst themselves. "I know this is scary and new, but we're going to be prepared."
Maeve watched him as he explained the bullet proof vests and precautions to take, she couldn't imagine him being shot.
Or any of them.
"Maeve?" Bobby called, snapping the younger firefighter out of her thoughts. "Can I talk to you?" he asked, and he wasn't smiling. The conversation must be serious because they went into his office.
"I'm taking you off active duty." He said, and it shocked her. "Say what now?" Maeve blinked. "As your captain, you are no longer needed at the 118... for now."
"Wait, why? Did I do something bad?" Maeve asked, her voice getting small. "What? No, no sweetie.. It's just... we can't have you getting hurt."
"The team? Or you?" She asked, and it actually annoyed Bobby how her stubbornness matched Buck's. "Maeve..." Bobby sighed. "You're just scared I'll get shot... again!"
"Okay, fine! Yes, I am! I'm scared my 6 year old daughter will get shot like she was before." Bobby exclaimed angrily. "Is that why you didn't let me chase the guy that stole the truck? I don't think he even had a gun."
"I'm sorry I'm worried about you, but you're just a kid!" Bobby argued, and Maeve dropped her hands. "A kid that works for the LAFD! A kid that can shape-shift!"
"A kid that died on me for 14 minutes!" Bobby shouted, and Maeve hid her flinch. "I... but I came back! It wasn't your fault!"
"Oh yeah? Because it sure felt like it was. You were kicked in the stomach by someone whose pain was caused by me." Bobby pointed. "I lost two children already... I cannot lose you too. End of talk, go home." Bobby sighed, sitting in his chair.
"What?! Now?" Maeve asked, throwing her hands up. "Yes. Get out of my station, Nash. Go home."
"Cap, what if something happens?" Maeve frowned. "Then we can handle it. Go home, Maeve."
"But-"
"Leave... now." Bobby said sternly. "Fine... ." Maeve turned. "... Good luck... Captain Jerk..." And Bobby was about to say something back to her but Maeve had phased through the wall and left.
The fire captain stared at the door and sat down with a huff, now Athena wasn't the only one mad at him. "Cap, I think Maeve just.." Buck walked in, and Bobby looked at him with a frown.
"What happened...?"
...
Maeve went home with nothing to do.
She peeked through the keyhole and watched Buck do something reckless on TV, climbing a tower like that, completely exposed.
If she was there, she would have been able to protect him.
She didn't come out of her room for the rest of the day, even when Athena called her for dinner. "Baby, come on out..." Athena knocked, but Maeve didn't reply.
"You can't be mad forever." She sighed.
Maeve still didn't reply.
Her door remained locked even until next morning. The young shapeshifter had no intentions of opening it anytime soon but she did want to do something else.
Earlier, when she phased through the door as a ghost, that had never happened before. It was new and cool so she wanted to develop that skill, it didn't work so well the first 10 times.
It worked better when she was angry, so she started trashing her mind with all the things Bobby told her, all the people that hurt her.
After a few tries, she managed to successfully move from point A to B as a swift little ghost. The afternoon was less productive, Maeve didn't know what to do.
She could always sneak out, but she hasn't seen Bobby that angry before.
He never yelled at her before.
Later that afternoon, Bobby came to her locked door and knocked. Instead of talking, he slipped a little card under the door.
It was how he used to communicate with her when Maeve was still getting used to him, when the door never opened. The little card wrote 'I'm sorry' with a frowny face.
Maeve stared at it before slipping out her own card, 'I'm sorry too.'
The next minute, another card came. 'I am just worried about you' with a smiley face.
And Maeve slipped another card out, 'I understand...'
With a little smiley face as well. She could be normal and go out the door like anyone else. But instead, she phased through the ceiling and behind Bobby before shape-shifting into Bobby.
She tapped him on the shoulder, making Bobby turn around. "Boo!" She shouted, sounding just like him. Bobby shrieked and fell back, making Maeve laugh.
"Find yourself scary, cap?" She joked, lending a hand.
"Ha ha, very funny." The fire captain rolled his eyes, taking her hand. Maeve shape-shifted back and suddenly hugged him tight, startling the older man again. "Sorry daddy..."
"Hey no, I'm sorry kid. I shouldn't have yelled." He exhaled, picking her up. "I shouldn't have called you a jerk..." Maeve replied, looking down.
"We both said some hurtful things. But the good thing is that we forgive each other, right?" He smiled. "Plus, I think you can return to work."
"Really? But I thought it was unsafe!"
"It was, but they caught the sniper. And Eddie is okay, he woke up earlier today."
"That's great!"
"Come on, we have a shift."
...
The next call was a fire at a building.
Maeve was helping to put out the fire from the inside, as a dragon of some kind, she could blew water all over the fire like some reptilian water hose.
Until she and Bobby got an order to retreat the building by the LAPD, just as he found the victim. Maeve was helping to put out the fire on his way out when she heard a gunshot.
She phased through the wall and watched in the smoke as Bobby laid on the floor, bleeding. In front of him was a man, ordering him to ask the others to come back in.
It's either her or her parents getting hurt, what is wrong with people?
She shape-shifted back into a dragon but kept quiet, walking on the ceiling, watching the man go on and on about his situation. "We're just doing our jobs." Bobby hissed.
"No, you keep resurrecting the evil." The guy yelled, and Bobby glanced up. "That's why I have her..." The Mas squinted his eyes at Bobby and looked up, to where a dragon stared him down, growling.
"I would try and run. The fate of the last guy who hurt someone she liked didn't end well."
Maeve lunged for the man, and slashed his shoulders before landing in front of Bobby, screeching. Her roars sounded horrific and made the fire captain cover his ears.
Even the people outside were covering their ears out of pain.
"Hey, guess what? She's only 6." Bobby added, as the dragon slowly creeped towards the man. "What the hell-..." he whispered, he reached for his gun but Maeve burned it.
"Shit."
As the rest of the 118 and Athena worried outside, Bobby's voice crackled over the radio. "Cap! Cap, you good?" Chimney asked. "Watch your heads." Bobby said.
"What, wh- oh no." Hen gulped, flying out the window was the man's body, horribly disfigured and burnt. It landed right in front of them, splatting down with blood spraying on the ground
"Woah." Buck winced.
"I also need an RA unit, I have been shot." Bobby added. "Wait, what? Why didn't you lead with that?" Hen asked frantically, grabbing her medic bag.
"Chimney, Hen, you go up there. I will deal with.. this thing here." Athena said, giving him a pointed look.
"Is he still alive?" Buck asked, leaning towards the dead body. "Buckley, if he was still alive, I'd shoot him to put him out of his misery." Athena said, exchanging looks with him.
Later, Cap was wheeled out on the gurney with the little dragon chewing on the dead's guys femur which she took out when he was still alive, sitting by his legs.
"You're just gunna let her do that?"
"I don't know how to raise dragons but I'm guessing it's enrichment for her in a way." Bobby replied to Chimney. "She's chewing on the bone of the guy she horrifically tore up for you."
"Sounds enriching for a dragon." He shrugged. "Bobby! You okay?" Athena asked, rushing to her husband. "I'm alright, thankfully. I don't think that guy is, though." Bobby answered, pointing at the body bag.
"Definitely not." She chuckled, kissing him.
"Hey, fun fact, I learned Maeve can shapeshift into us."
"She can what now?"
...
Bobby woke up a couple hours later in a hospital, with Athena by his side and Maeve was playing tug of war with May who wasn't playing.
"Come on girl, drop the bone." She sighed, pulling on it while Maeve thought it was a game. She pulled back and May stumbled forward, letting go of the bone.
"You can't play with a dead man's femur!"
"Come on Maeve let go." Athena whistled but Maeve didn't register it. "She only responds to Bobby's whistles for some reason."
"You need a lower pitch." Bobby answered, whistling to Maeve. "Daddy!" Maeve squealed hopping on the bed. "Careful now, your father has just been shot." Athena laughed, kissing Bobby.
"Lower pitch? Our whistles sound identical."
"It's not about sound, it's about frequency. She responds to lower frequencies, for some reason."
"May, why don't you take Maeve to the park and I'll speak with your father." Athena suggested. "Sure mum, come on Maeve." May urged. "I'll meet you there." Maeve said, phasing through the window.
"Did she just-"
"Yup, she learned that yesterday."
Maeve shape-shifted into a dog and waited for May to come down, her tail thumping on the ground. May ran towards her, panting hard. "You are fast!" She laughed. "Come on, let's go to the-"
"Maeve!?"
Someone suddenly shouted from the other side of the park, it was a middle aged woman and a man. Maeve paused and shape-shifted back, "Huh..?" May kneeled down to her, "Maeve, do you know them?"
"They... Look familiar..." The two ran towards her and hugged Maeve tightly, but Maeve was frozen still like stone. "Oh my sweet baby! I thought I lost you."
"I'm sorry, do you know my sister?" May asked, picking Maeve up. It seemed to have annoyed them because they rolled their eyes and stood up.
"Know her? We're her parents!"
LORE.
