The drag wasn’t violent, not exactly, but the fingers around your wrist felt like iron clamps.
A door creaked open and slammed shut behind you.
The air in this empty cell was heavy, dust motes drifting through a thin slant of moonlight from a high, grimy window. It smelled of rust and old sweat, a place guards rarely patrolled.
When your eyes adjusted, you saw him.
Dazai Osamu stood there, one hand still gripping your wrist, the other hanging loosely at his side.
His expression was neutral. Cold, even. Not a single hint of that sharp toothed grin he so often brandished like a blade.
"Ah… Dazai," you murmured, your voice smooth and low, like dark honey. "So you’re the one who pulled me in here. How forward."
Dazai’s eyes flicked across your face, reading you in a heartbeat, as if scanning a page of an old, familiar book. His hold on your wrist did not loosen.
"You’re late," he said finally. His tone wasn’t teasing. It wasn’t anything at all. Just flat, as if each word was being weighed before release.
You chuckled softly, free hand rising to touch your own cheek in mock contemplation. "Ah… was there a scheduled meeting I forgot? My apologies. I’ve been terribly busy lately. Cleaning people's mess, you know."
"People," he echoed, voice soft but sharp enough to slice open skin. "Like Kyusaku. Or Chuuya."
A spark flickered in your eyes at the mention of Chuuya, but you didn’t flinch.
Your lips curled, forming that same delicate, almost dainty smile you always wore — the one you had perfected over countless games and experiments.
"Chuuya… you’re always so interested in him lately, aren’t you?" you drawled, as if tasting the syllables on your tongue. "Are you jealous, perhaps? How adorable."
Dazai’s fingers on your wrist tightened suddenly, enough to send a jolt of pain spiraling up your arm.
You didn’t even wince. Instead, your head tilted again, eyes wide and shimmering with delight — a predator savoring a kill.
Dazai leaned forward then, his breath brushing against your ear. "I don’t get jealous," he whispered, low and dangerous. "Jealousy is for children, and you know I’ve long since grown out of such games."
Your brow lifted, amusement flickering across your face. "Oh? And yet you orchestrated Kyusaku’s escape just to pull me aside like this. Such an elaborate performance for someone who claims not to care."
Dazai didn’t react at first.
His eyes slid shut, his lashes ghosting against his cheeks, as if he were trying to steady something inside.
When they opened again, they were dark and bottomless.
"You showed him," Dazai said, voice almost too soft to catch. "You showed Chuuya your real self, didn’t you? Or, at least, tried to."
Your smile faltered — just slightly, like a hairline crack on polished porcelain. But you caught it quickly, smoothing your features back into place.
"I wonder what you mean," you cooed, even as you felt your heart pulse like a trapped bird inside your ribs. "My real self? You know as well as I do that there is nothing truly real here."
Dazai tilted his head slightly, regarding you as one might study a pinned insect. "No," he murmured. "That’s where you’re wrong, L/N-san. With me, you always keep up the act. But with Chuuya…"
He trailed off, but the implication hung thick and heavy between you.
Your lips parted, a soft exhale slipping past them.
You reached up with your free hand, index finger pressing lightly against Dazai’s lips as though silencing a child.
"Shhh," you whispered, that same gentle lullaby cadence. "Don’t ruin this lovely night with accusations. I’ve missed your company, truly."
Dazai’s mouth didn’t move under your touch. His eyes did not leave yours.
Slowly, excruciatingly slow, he turned his head just enough for your finger to slide off, and his mouth hovered dangerously close to yours.
For a moment, you thought he might close that final, infinitesimal gap. But he didn’t.
Instead, his forehead came to rest against yours, a single tremor passing through his fingers still gripping your wrist.
"You’re a terrible liar," he breathed.
You blinked slowly, lashes lowering, lips curling again into that same perfect, empty smile. "And you’re a wonderful actor," you countered softly. "But we both know the stage must end sometime, Dazai."
He let out a low, humorless chuckle that barely rose above a ragged breath. "Stage? This is no stage, L/N-san. This… this is reality. The only one we have."
Your head tilted slightly, and you let out a small, sweet sigh as though you were a schoolboy bored of a lecture.
"Oh? Reality?" You stepped forward, your free hand sliding up to rest lightly on his chest, feeling the faintest echo of his heartbeat beneath the layers of fabric and bandages. "That’s rich, coming from you. The one who crafts illusions so intricately he forgets which mask he’s wearing."
His fingers finally loosened on your wrist, but you didn’t pull away. Instead, you rested your forehead more firmly against his, your dark gaze drilling into his.
"You want to possess me so badly, don’t you?" you whispered, voice almost tender. "But you can’t even grasp your own self fully. How tragic. How beautifully pathetic."
Dazai’s breath hitched faintly, a flicker of something — pain, rage, desire — crossing his features. But it was gone as quickly as it appeared.
"I don’t need to possess you," he murmured, his voice now frighteningly calm. "I already own you. Just as you own me. We’re both monsters, remember?"
You laughed then, a soft, breathy sound that echoed against the cell walls like falling glass.
"Once, perhaps," you said, your tone sweet as poisoned wine. "But I saw you laugh, Dazai. With your little friends. Genuine laughter. So bright. So… alive. How envious I was. How fascinating to see that even you can touch something real."
His pupils contracted sharply at that, as though you’d driven a knife under his ribs. But he didn’t flinch.
"That’s it, then," he said, each word like a pin pressed into skin. "That’s why you’re so desperate to show Chuuya your true self. You want to test it. To see if you can feel what I felt."
"Perhaps," you mused, your fingers now curling lightly into his bandages as though they were delicate fabric on a lover’s sleeve. "Perhaps I wanted to see if there’s anything left inside me that can still feel warmth. Something not rotted through."
He tilted his head lower, so close you could count each eyelash. "And you would rather show that to Chuuya than to me?"
Your expression softened, then shifted into a slow, sharp grin. "Oh, Dazai… you’re such a jealous child."
His eyes flickered — an animalistic spark before disappearing back into a deep void.
"You are mine," he murmured, voice calm, final.
Your fingers slid from his chest to his jawline, tracing the shape of his face with almost clinical precision.
You pressed lightly, tilting his head as though studying a fragile sculpture.
"And yet," you said quietly, "I was never truly yours. Just as you were never truly mine. We’re both collectors, aren’t we? We collect people. Hearts. Souls. Toys to break and piece back together."
You pressed closer, your lips brushing his cheek without truly kissing. A ghost of a touch, as ephemeral as a breath.
"But when you laughed… that moment… you became something more than a collector. You became human."
Dazai’s jaw twitched under your fingers, the tension coiling up his neck and down into his shoulders.
"And you hate it," you finished softly, as though reciting a bedtime story. "Because it meant you were no longer the same as me."
Silence settled between you, thick and suffocating.
You could hear the faint drip of water in a distant corridor, the rustle of vermin in the walls.
Slowly, Dazai raised one hand, fingers hovering just above your nape.
He didn’t touch you. Instead, he held that pose, as though frozen in a moment of decision.
"You always did understand too much," he whispered, voice hoarse now, stripped of pretense for a single heartbeat.
You let out a low hum, your smile gentle, almost affectionate. "That’s why you’re so enamored, isn’t it? Because I see you. The parts you try so desperately to bury under your games and riddles."
His hand finally fell away, fingers curling loosely at his side.
The temperature in the room seemed to plummet several degrees.
You straightened, slipping back into that poised, aristocratic posture. Your expression smoothed out, your gaze glassy and endless again.
"We both wear too many masks," you murmured, as though talking to yourself. "But at least mine fit."
A sharp breath escaped him, somewhere between a scoff and a laugh, but it carried no mirth.
"You think you’re so different," he said, almost idly, his eyes now glinting like polished stones. "But in the end, you’re just as empty as I am."
You gave him a languid shrug, as though agreeing with the weather forecast.
"Perhaps," you conceded lightly. "But emptiness can be a beautiful thing, don’t you think? An endless canvas. Limitless possibilities."
He stepped closer again, his presence cold and electric all at once. His eyes flicked briefly to your lips before darting back up.
For a split moment, the air pulsed between you — charged, violent, aching.
But neither of you moved to close the final distance.
Instead, you reached out, brushing a stray lock of hair from his forehead.
The touch was gentle, almost reverent, yet chilling in its precision.
"You want to kiss me so badly right now, don’t you?" you whispered, a wicked curve to your lips.
His mouth parted, but no sound came out.
You leaned closer, your breath ghosting across his lips, your eyes wide and dark.
"But you won’t," you continued, tone like a razor blade dipped in honey. "Because you know… if you do… you might truly fall. And you’re far too much of a coward for that."
A violent shudder ran through him.
His hands twitched at his sides, fingers clawing at the air as though reaching for something just out of grasp.
"You…" His voice cracked slightly before he forced it back into a cold monotone. "You’re insufferable."
You giggled softly, your forehead dropping forward to rest against his once more, like a silent taunt.
"I know," you purred. "And yet, here you are. Still chasing me. Still orchestrating entire games to pull me into your little spider’s web."
You stepped back at last, the space between you blooming open like a cold wound.
He didn’t move to follow. Instead, his eyes followed you with the intensity of a starving wolf cornering its prey.
You tilted your head at him, eyes flickering with a gleam that was equal parts mirth and melancholy.
"Goodnight, Dazai," you murmured, voice low and melodic. "Dream of me, won’t you? Perhaps next time, you’ll be brave enough to truly touch me."
He didn’t answer. His lips parted slightly, his gaze empty yet burning.
You turned on your heel, steps echoing faintly against the cracked tiles.
As your fingers ghosted across the cell door, you paused, looking back over your shoulder.
"And do thank Kyusaku for me, won’t you?" you added lightly, your smile like moonlight on a blade. "Their performance tonight was delightful."
A tiny tremor passed through Dazai’s shoulders. But his expression stayed frozen, carved from marble.
You slipped out then, your figure dissolving into the corridor beyond like smoke curling into the night.
Behind you, in that stagnant cell, Dazai remained utterly still. His eyes, wide and unblinking, fixed on the place where you had just stood.
His hand drifted up, hovering in the air where your warmth had just been.
His fingers closed slowly, painfully, into a trembling fist.
A low, rattling exhale escaped him, echoing off the stone walls.
"L/N-san…" he murmured, so softly it could have been mistaken for the settling dust.
His lips curled then — not into a grin, but something jagged and wrong, like a wound trying to form a smile.
"So that’s how you want to play…" he breathed.
Then he laughed.
A single, hollow sound at first, echoing into the dead space.
Then another, higher and sharper, until the laughter splintered into the cell like shards of broken glass.
He staggered back against the wall, one hand covering his mouth as though to stop the flood of sound, but the laughter kept spilling out, raw and electric and strangled all at once.
Somewhere deep in that sound, a promise twisted into shape — thin and poisonous.
A promise that next time, he would not stop at a ghost of a touch.
A promise that next time, he would drag you down with him into that bottomless, shared void you both claimed to despise.
Outside, the moon hung low and bright, its silver light spilling across the quiet halls like a watchful eye.
And you walked on, your steps calm and smooth, the echo of your laughter — or perhaps his — ringing faintly behind you, carried on the cool breath of the night.
