14:22, 23 October 2025The door to Liam's room clicked shut softly, leaving only the faint hum of the air-conditioning and the steady breathing of a sleeping child behind it.
Rafael lingered in the hallway for a moment, his back against the wall, eyes closed. His pulse still hadn't settled. His throat burned from words he hadn't meant to say, from the ones he couldn't take back.
Lea reached for his hand gently. "Come," she said quietly. "He's asleep. Let's go."
He nodded wordlessly and followed her down the hall.
The moment they stepped inside, the quiet felt heavier. Rafael sat at the edge of the bed, elbows on his knees, head in his hands. He didn't cry, but his shoulders trembled.
Lea closed the door and leaned against it, watching him.
"He's right," he said finally, his voice rough. "He's right about everything."
Lea crossed the room and stood behind him, placing both hands on his shoulders. "He's not right about you not loving him."
Rafael gave a small, bitter laugh. "Then I've done a terrible job showing it."
"We were trying to protect him," she said softly.
He shook his head, staring at the floor. "I hid him. I hid him from the same world I thought I was saving him from. And all it did was make him feel invisible. How could I have been so blind, Lea?"
She circled around to face him, kneeling so their eyes met. "You were not blind. You were scared. You've lived your whole life being seen, and it nearly destroyed you. You thought if you shielded him from that, he'd be safe. But you forgot that children don't measure love in safety. They measure it in presence."
He exhaled shakily. "I yelled, Lea. I yelled at him."
"I heard," she said softly.
He rubbed his face with both hands. "I swore I never would."
"Paeng," she whispered, cupping his face. "You're human. You lost control for a second. But you stopped before you broke him. And you stayed. That's what matters."
He lowered his hands and met her gaze. "You should've seen the way he looked at me. Like I'd failed him completely."
Lea shook her head gently. "He looked at you like a boy who finally got your attention."
Rafael froze, her words hitting deep. "You think that's all he wanted?"
Lea smiled faintly. "That's all any child wants — to be seen by the people they love most."
He nodded slowly, his jaw tight. "Tomorrow, I'll make it right."
She brushed her thumb over his cheek. "You will. You always do."
Rafael looked up at her, weary but soft. "You shouldn't have to fix me every time I break."
Lea's lips curved into the smallest smile. "It's not fixing, Paeng. It's reminding."
"Of what?"
She leaned closer, her voice dropping to a whisper. "That you're loved, too."
He blinked, his breath catching. "Lea..."
Her hand moved to the back of his neck. "You've been holding everything in since Ellie came back, since the hearings, since the scandal. You keep trying to be everyone's peace. But tonight, I think you need someone to be yours."
Rafael's eyes closed briefly. "You already are."
Lea smiled faintly. "Then let me remind you properly."
She kissed him — slow, deliberate, tender. A kiss meant not to ignite but to ease. To tell him I'm here. You're not alone.
When she pulled back, she whispered against his lips, "That was to ease the tension."
He looked at her for a long moment — the quiet woman who somehow always knew when to pull him back from the edge. Then he kissed her again, deeper this time.
"Then let me return the favor," he murmured.
The night unfolded softly from there. No words, no apologies — just touches that spoke of forgiveness and need. The slow unraveling of restraint until there was nothing left between them but warmth and the sound of shared breath.
They moved together gently at first, then again and again, finding calm not in passion but in closeness — a rhythm that said we're still here, we're still us.
When it was finally quiet, Lea lay against his chest, tracing circles over his skin.
Rafael pressed a kiss to her hair. "You think he'll forgive me?"
"He already has," she murmured. "He's your son."
He smiled faintly, exhaustion softening his features. "Then maybe he'll understand someday why I kept him hidden. Not because I was ashamed, but because I couldn't bear the world hurting him."
Lea looked up at him, her voice a whisper. "The world doesn't get to decide who your son is, Paeng. You do."
He nodded slowly, pulling her closer. "Then I'll start showing it."
Lea closed her eyes, resting her head on his shoulder. "Good. But for now," she said softly, "sleep."
"After one more," he murmured, tilting her chin toward him.
Her quiet laugh filled the room, blending into the steady rhythm of the night as they kissed again — slow, unhurried, two hearts mending in the dark.
And somewhere between their breaths and the silence that followed, peace finally found them — not perfect, not painless, but whole enough to try again when morning came.
