Chapter 8- You're Gonna Be Okay

Cora had awoken once again in the same area she was before, her hands were bound behind her back as she lied on her side. She wasn't fully awake as she blinked multiple times retaking in the senses of the room, the same thick arid smell and the moisture of the ground. "Commander, the storm is worsening," Cora heard part of the conversation between her keepers.

"Okay, grab some supplies we'll bunker down here tonight, this girl is important, we need her information," the same girl who'd asked the previous questions.

"Good luck with that," Cora spoke roughly glaring at the woman as she lied on her side. Her arms grew tired in the current position.

"You really are as feisty as he said, that's okay, we'll break you," She paused squatting down next to her. She lifted her chin having Cora look her in the eyes, she held the same glare as she spat in the grounder's face. Her guards stiffened behind her, Cora received a slap to her cheek that was going to bruise. The guards grabbed her by the arms lifting her up and resting her against the wall. "You may think you're hot stuff but let me tell you something sweet heart, you're not. I have a source of information and this little bird told me some things about you, and identified a body." Cora tensed looking up, there were many people she cared about on the trip; Mat, Bellamy, Jasper, Finn. Then the thought that they'd killed Octavia internally killed her. "The information we received was very helpful to get a perspective on you."

"Wow you are such a tease," Cora said her voice filled with annoyance. "Do share your information." She encouraged looking at the woman.

"Cora really is a pretty name, but your back story that's something else," she said walking slowly back and forth slowly rubbing her hands together. "You sure did a horrific crime, and yet he still lives. You also a have a little love life inside your walls. Mat, is it?" She sat up straighter, "I guess so. Well, your love life will be coming to an end and it won't be your fault. He was killed when my people attacked he died pushing some taller boy out of the way."

"Bellamy," she mumbled as the woman talked. Cora looked up at the grounder, "If he's really dead, I wanna see his body. I mean wouldn't be in your best interest have me break down, that's your plan right?"

The unnamed grounder sent off her two guards walking towards her as she sat against the wall, "I'll give you a minute." The strong female leader said as a limp boy was carried in. Her lips parted as she saw him being set down, the guards left and close the door. Cora needed to get her hands to the front of her body, she widened her arms making enough room to fit her legs through. She winced once getting her arms past her hips, now underneath her knees she continued finally getting her arms in front of her.

Cora crawled over to the boy looking at his pale, cold, stiff body. His hair was a mess and slightly wet, his face was dirty and just as chilled as the room. "Oh my god, Mat. I'm so sorry," she spoke quietly as she rubbed his cheek with her thumb. A single tear slid down her cheek dropping off her chin falling on to his cheek. She looked at his shirt, there was a blotch of blood along with an entry wound, she bit the insides of her cheek preventing anymore tears. "I love you," she kissed him for the last time, his lips were dry and stiff unlike when they first kissed. The first time, it had been like fireworks were going off inside her stomach, and everything seemed right. Now it was wrong, it was all wrong. She looked at the necklace around his neck, it was a dog-tag that was passed down from his family for generations, it was one of the last things left on the Ark from the ground. It was one of the things they talked about the night it rained for the first time on them, when they went up to the drop ship and talked until they fell asleep. She undid it from his neck and looked at it for a moment before latching it to her neck tucking it under her shirt. She rested her head on his chest once more mentally rethinking everything they ever talked about or did, reliving the moments with him.

The door creaked open as the leader walked in seeing Cora resting her head on his chest. She sat up and glared at the woman her eyes glossed over with tears. As much as she was thankful for the small amount of time she was vengeful. "I think you know understand, we are not playing any games."

"What, is this supposed to scare me? You have your job as I have mine, and unlike your little source of info I will die for the camp and the people within. We're stronger than you think so try and break me but it's a waste of time," Cora said realizing that she couldn't tell them anything they would attack the camp, kill everyone within the walls. She had to take whatever pain they served and dish it out as a reason to get out. A guard picked him up underneath his arms and dragged him out.

"Bring in the bucket," she ordered sending a guard out. Two guys came back in with a large barrel filled with water, "You don't answer in less than ten seconds you get dunked." They cut her hands to rebound them behind her back. A man held a firm grip on her hair and her shoulders ready to push her in. "How'd you get here?"

"Magic," she smirked her head then pushed into the water. Cora stayed still taking in the least amount of water, the need for air started to override her body she shook her shoulders and her head. Her hair was being yanked back out of the water as she gasped for air her hair, face, and somewhat of the collar of her shirt was soaked.

"What are your hunting paths and plans?" She asked annoyed with the first answer.

"Well," she paused to spit a bit of water, "we walk around with magical little things called wea-" She was cut off as her head was pushed and held in the water. This time she thrashed around on purpose reaching her hands out to grab hold of one of the guards' weapons. Successful she slid the small knife she'd grabbed and slid it up her jacket.

"Are you going to attack us?"

"Are you? Hold on for a second sir-grips-a-lot," he threated to push her before the leader stopped him. "We haven't done anything to you. You speared one of my friends saved his life then hung him up as bait, my other friend was taken and that's why we were out there. We haven't shone any means of war, unless I missed a meeting where we planned to.

"You say you haven't shone acts of war, but those missiles you shot into the sky that burned red, brought a village to ashes killing many of my own."

"The rockets? Those were to talk to our people still in space. I don't think you get just what kind of teenagers you're dealing with."

"What snarky and sarcastic? I think we can handle that."

"You're wrong."

"Excuse me?"

"We're criminals they sent us down here to die. We're not dead yet now are we? If there's a war you intend on planning it won't be our fault. It will be yours," Cora said looking at the woman. She was wrong although she didn't know it yet. The teens had more strategic opportunities, they may not have been as experienced but they had something the grounders didn't have a reason to fight on.

"Dunk her," with that she went underwater again thrashing around some more as she slid the knife into her pants. She was pulled up once more right before she felt she was going to pass out. "Set up phase two, she needs more persuasion," The grounder nodded as she left. He dropped Cora to the ground as she continued to try and restore her normal flow of oxygen. She thought about pulling out the knife and making a run for it but this wasn't the right time, she had to wait. She could hear multiple men walking in attaching something to the walls. Cora's wrists were freed as her body was lifted up to her feet. "Remove your shirt," one of the men ordered, her jacket was already taken off and thrown in the corner. She refused tugging out of his grip and started to fight. They punched her in the gut, she crumbled over groaning, as they removed her tank for her. They tossed her top in a corner, her arms were lifted up as her wrists were rebound some chain holding her up.

"Same as last time, I'll ask you a question you don't answer or give a serious one a strike to your back," The woman said crossing her arms. "Who are the leaders of your people and what do they look like?" Cora didn't answer this time. She wasn't going to answer any of the questions. "Are their names Clarke and Bellamy?" She remained silent as her back was stuck. She shook slightly as she got back up to her feet as she held back the scream and tears.

"Why did you come down to the ground? Why here?" She kept her vow of silence, her back was hit once again, this time she cried out her legs weakening. She stood back up and gripped the chains.

"What are you intentions of being here? What do you want?" Her body ached as she crumbled, involuntary tears came as her feet could no longer support her body. Strike after strike her body fell even weaker, she no longer gripped the chain but hung there, her legs couldn't support her. Her voice was hardly there anymore, her eyes were red and her cheeks were puffy. Her head was no longer held high but it hung low.

"The storm is getting worse, we need to bunker down," Another grounder came in warning the few that were there.

"Cut her down, she won't be moving very much. Make sure to retie her to the wall. Lock the door, then follow," she said walking out. A grounder walked over pulling out a key unlocking her chains, she dropped to the floor laying there in curled up in a ball. They left her in the room locking the door, after they locked her ankle with another chain.

It had been about twenty minutes that she lied on the floor, the tears had stopped coming but the pain was still there-a non-stop sensation of burning pain. She'd tried to move but everything just hurt. The door had the same squeaking sound as it opened, the sounds of wind funneling through the halls increased as it opened. Thunder and lightning cracked in the night sky echoing into her cell. She looked up hearing heavy boots clack against the floor. "My leaders don't know how to get information of people, lucky them I do."

She sat up as the dark voice toward over her, "What are you doing?" She tried to scoot back as the sound of a belt being undone could faintly be heard over the storm.

"A pretty face like yours can be convinced another way," She suddenly wished she'd gotten her shirt back on just for some sort of more protection. She felt the tip of the blade against her skin as the moist wall pressed against her back. He squatted down next to her running his dirty, rough fingers over her cheek. She looked away her body tensing as she made her hands into fists. She slipped one of her hands to the knife pulling it out slowly holding it ready to attack. His hand trailed down her neck, she gripped the knife for a moment more before lunging at him. The knife went into his lower stomach area, he pushed her back crying out as she yanked out the knife as she was pushed back against the wall. "You little bitch," he shouted charging her. Pushing her back harder she cried out as he gripped her neck choking her. Struggling for air she managed to hold on to the knife, she brought her hand up and jabbed the knife into his neck. She was dropped to the floor as she coughed and gasped to regain a regular air flow. He struggled as well as his blood poured into his lungs, she watched as the life was drained from his body. Cora found another rock like before and started to bang it against the chain, the sound of a click and the rock hitting the ground. She undid the chain quickly running to a corner going to grab her shirt and jacket. She winced as she slid on her tank, the cuts on her back bleeding lightly as she continued to put on her jacket.

She raced to the door it opened easily. She'd gotten out into the hall she jumped back a bit, the cracking of the lighting spooking her. She looked left seeing a dead end, "Right it is." She gripped the knife walking down the hall keeping close to the wall. Determination filled her mind, her body physically wanting to break down, but her mind said no, that she had to keep going. The sounds of footsteps echoed the halls louder than hers. She sucked up to the wall waiting for the grounder to pass, once they did she pushed them up against the wall, she looked into the man's eyes before covering his mouth and slitting his throat. She watched as the blood spilled from his throat as the life left his eyes. She let go and his body dropped to the floor, she kept walking seeing a door. A small amount hope filled her eyes as she walked faster, Cora got to the door trying to open it. She pushed a bit slamming on the door, "Come on." She was breathing erratically. She stepped back kicking it once, then again giving up. "Damn it," she cried out her voice cracking as her throat burned. The thunder roared and the lighting flashed, there was a small reflection shinned off the door, she wiped off some of the dirt seeing a white reflector strip. Another flash of lighting shinned through the dirty windows, PULL, "You're fucking kidding me." She huffed a laugh pulling on the door, continuing to walk down another hall finally found an exit the door carried by the wind swung open, then shut, open, shut. It continued until she grabbed the door pulling it open slightly being pushed back by the wind. She started running mindlessly into the woods still holding the weapon.

Cora lost track of time as she hurdled over trees, rain piercing her skin, and the wind echoing through her ears. She'd reached a bridge stopping in her tracks. She made her way down the side of a hill mostly slipping, she threw herself into the water taking a couple sips. She rested for a while as the water ran along all the open wounds. The sun began to rise the water's darkness lightened with a blue glow, mud surfaced around her mixing as she moved in the ground. She sat up crossing the small river her body was drenched in mud as she made it up the hill and continued up a slightly steeper climb. Reaching the top she could hear the sounds of people chattering and cleaning up the mess of the storm. Miller was barking orders and she assumed Bellamy and Clarke were having a heart to heart moment. She stopped abruptly her mind raced back to everything that had happened, she relived the event over a course of two minutes. Everything that had been settled was now brought back up, her breathing was erratic her hands started to shake, and she gripped the knife tightly once more. More tears welled up in her eyes as all the pain flooded back in.

"I can't go back in there," she mumbled to herself running her hands through her thick, wet, muddy hair. Her stomach ached craving to have something in it, her head pounded as she looked at the camp. Her body craved to go in there-that's what she'd been fighting to do-but her mind said that she couldn't.

"Clarke! Bellamy! Over here," she heard a kid shouting and hid behind a tree. The gate opened and her body stiffened as footsteps stepped outside the gates, there were more than just three. She closed her eyes hearing two steps of footsteps walk up next to the tree.

"Cora?" Clarke's voice was the first familiar voice she heard in a while.

-

"Clarke, Cora you girls behave," Abby stated watching the five-year-olds chasing each other around the home.

"No promises," Cora smiled jumping up onto the couch and over it to tag Clarke. "You're it."

"Come on," Clarke giggled turning to chase Cora. A small knock on the door didn't stop the girl's games but Abby walked over to open the door to Jaha and Wells.

"Wells, the girls happen to playing a game of tag. Go join them if you like."

"Thank you," he giggled running over to play with them.

"So is she still being a smartass?"

"Cora? Oh yeah totally, but in a cute little five-year-old way."

"Cora, stop being so fast," Clarke complained as her and Wells teased her.

"Come on Clarke it's not that hard you just move your feet," Cora smiled continuing to run.

-

"He's dead," she looked over at them opening her eyes. The others around were shocked by the fact that one of the strongest people in the camp was breaking down right in front of them. The walls of her castle were breaking and there were people to witness it.

Bellamy took a couple steps towards her, "Cora." He held out a hand silently signaling everyone to stay back. He noticed the knife in her hand and wasn't fully sure what she'd do with it.

"He's dead, Mat's dead and it's all my fault. I should've made him stay, oh my god. It's all my fault," the small group stood there silently not daring to say a word.

"Cora you didn't kill him," Bellamy said his eyes taking that doe look they do when he has a feeling of guilt or pity for someone.

"He's-they just," Cora couldn't find her words as she looked at them. Everything she'd suppressed had come out, tears began to pour out of her eyes.

"Alright guys lets step back a bit," Clarke said sending everyone back a bit.

Bellamy took another step forward again reaching out grabbing her hand sliding his fingers under hers taking the knife from her, he tossed it to the ground. Clarke picked it up and watched as Cora dropped to the ground on her knees. Bellamy grabbed her torso dropping down with her. "Cora, you're gonna be okay," Bellamy mumbled into her hair, lightly gripping the back of her head. She buried her face into his chest as tears poured out of her eyes. "You're gonna be okay." They're gotten Cora inside the walls and cleaned up, at one point she'd fallen asleep in the dropship.

"Bellamy," Clarke called out walking up to him, "The Ark said there's a bunker a day's walk from here. Supplies a couple other things."

"Alright we can head out tomorrow," he looked at the mostly clean camp. "How's she doing?"

"There's cuts-more like slashes-all over her back and she's a little dehydrated, but she'll be okay."

"Good," he nodded his arms crossed looking around.

"Will you?" She asked looking up at him with questioning eyes.

"What's that supposed to mean?" He asked looking down at her.

"I may be blonde, but Bellamy I'm not stupid," a small smirk tugged at her lips as she walked off.

-

Cora awoke to the feeling of extreme back pains, her head still pounded and her stomach clenched for food. She sat up slowly wincing in pain rubbing her temple, she stood up stumbling slightly, and leaning against a wall she regained her balanced. Walking towards the drop ship door she tripped over her feet, "Son of a fuck." She groaned getting back on her feet, making it out of the drop ship the she looked up at the sky seeing the pink and purple colors mix. She scanned the groups of people seeing a duo that made her smile without even talking to them. Cora walked up to the boys who were practically brothers. "So which one of you is gonna give me a bite?" She asked smiling at the boys.

"Cora," Jasper paused wrapping her in a hug, "I'm so glad you're okay."

She turned and gave Monty a small hug as well smiling at them, "that makes two of us."

"Oh, wanna bite?" Monty asked holding up his cooked meat.

"Oh sweet mother of food I've never wanted so disgusting more in my life," she smiled taking a bite, she closed her eyes for a moment before looking at the two. "I love you guys," she huffed a laugh looking at them.

"Whoa we're having a love fest and I wasn't invited?" Octavia's voice chimed in, they turned around and Cora was attacked by another hug, she hugged Octavia back longer than she expected.

"I'm glad you're okay," Cora smiled into her hair, she pulled back looking at the girl. "Next time you're gonna go on some stupid mission of independence, let me know where you're going."

Octavia smiled at the girl, "I won't promise anything."

"Cora," the voice of the other female leader called out causing her to turn. "The hell you think you're doing out of bed?"

"I almost died and that's what you ask me?" She asked the smile still plastered across her face.

"Well that's because you're a hardass and I really didn't think you'd die that easily. I vision you more chopping off someone's head and then having a heart attack."

"I have the power to chop off someone's head? Sick."

"You know, I'm not really hungry," Clarke smiled handing hers' over to Cora.

"It's like Christmas," she chuckled ripping off the small piece. "So, what were the damages done with the storm?" They looked at her almost surprised she knew there was one. "Guys, I ran through the thing," they all had a sort of 'ah-ha' face. She smiled shaking her head.

"A couple tents were knocked over but nothing deathly," Clarke responded glancing over the camp.

"Hey can we sit I'm a little tired of standing," Jasper made a comment backing up towards the nearest campfire.

"Yes darling we can relax for a couple minutes in our crazy life on the ground," Cora chuckled.

"Amen," Monty smiled sitting down next to Jasper, Cora sat next Clarke and Octavia plopped down next to Monty and Jasper.

"How long has it been since anyone has actually sat down and relaxed?" Clarke asked taking a small sip of water.

"Please don't ask that question, last time I did it was when my leg was all bloody because of some giant water snake.

"Hey that was a good day for me, Murphy got his ass whooped."

"Well that's because he deserved it," Clarke said ripping off a part of the meat Cora had in her hands.

"Hey um where'd your brother go?" Cora asked looking at Octavia.

"Don't know, don't care."

"What did I miss in the sibling series while I was... gone?" She glanced at Clarke pausing to figure out the right words.

"Um it's a little complicated, Bellamy did something Octavia didn't like."

"Ah, that sums up a lot," Cora said her voice laced with sarcasm. "I'm gonna get some water," she started to get up when Jasper beat her to it.

"No it's okay I got it."

"Jasper, sit your ass back down I can get my own water," Cora shot him a small glare he quickly sat back down holding his hands up. She stood and walked over with a small cup, she looked around the groups. Everyone seemed distant, she shook her head shaking any lonely thought out of her head. She saw Bellamy walking over as well. "Hey," she said softly filling up her cup.

"Hey," Bellamy looked at her actions she seemed shyer, cowering in a corner type of stance not her shoulders back head held high. "You okay?"

"Fan-freaking-tastic," her voice laced with sarcasm. She took a sip avoiding looking at him. She could feel his concerned authority figure look beading down on her. "I'm- well I'm going through the emotions of my boyfriend's dead, I was kind of held captive by the grounders, then torched to not spill anything. Then almost raped, because of that I killed two people by letting them choke on their own blood. Even better I come back to have everyone look at me like I'm some sort of stupid disease." Cora hadn't realized her hands were shaking. The water in her hands was spilling out, Bellamy grabbed the cup setting it down.

"Cora," he paused waiting for a group to pass, "What happened to Mat, that wasn't you're fault. As for the grounders taking you, that could equally be my fault as anyone else's. As for the grounders, they shouldn't have messed with someone so powerful." She looked at the ground briefly, then her eyes met his. She nodded slightly biting her inner cheek, her eyebrows furrowed together as she tried to think of something to say. Her lips parted but nothing came out. "Oh hey, I don't know if Clarke told you but your stuff is in her tent," he said watching her hands, they weren't shaking as bad as he handed her the water again.

"Wait what?" She asked taking the water, "Why?"

"Two people decided they need some privacy," Bellamy said a small smile tugged at his lips.

"That's-that's so not funny," she tried not to smile herself. "I hate you."

"Yeah, I hate you too," he smiled watching her struggle.

"Stop," she said looking up at him.

"Stop what?" He asked innocently the same cheeky grin filling his face.

"Stop doing that thing, which you do when someone isn't all happy," she said trying to explain something she didn't know herself. Bellamy gave off a small laugh as her cheeks turned a light shade of pink. She shook her head looking at him.

"I do a thing?"

"Yes you do that thing where you, well oh never mind," she gave up taking another drink of water.

"Since when you give up easily?"

"Since I'm too tired to care about something so-"

"Childish?"

"Exactly," she said smiling.

-

"Please mom! I promise we won't be loud," Clarke begged as the girls stuck out their bottom lip and raising their eyebrows their eyes taking a puppy formation.

"Um Clarke," Cora whispered, "Don't make a promise we can't keep."

"We'll be mostly-"

"Uh."

"Kinda-"

"Well."

"We will not wake you guys up for food," the girls nodded in sync.

"If it's alright with your father, you can stay over," Abby gave in smiling at the two. The girls high-fived and ran off to Clarke's room. There was a knock on the door over the girls squealing and giggling. "Stewart."

"Hello Abby," The tall mall said looking down at her. His hands were causally in his pockets as his blue eyes seeped into the household looking for a small blonde little girl. "Cora come on its time-"

"They asked if she could spend the night, I said it was fine if you were okay with it," Abby said looking at him.

"Daddy!" Out ran a little girl, her pigtails bounced as she ran past her friend's mother into her father's arm. His swooped her off the ground holding her on his waist.

"How's my baby girl?" He asked smiling kissing the top of her head.

"Fantastic," she smiled her arms wrapped around his neck. "So, daddy, can I spend the night?"

He looked at Abby then at Cora, "Yeah, go ahead."

She squealed placing a small kiss on her father's cheek. "I love you!" He put her down running off to play with Clarke.

"I'll see you tomorrow," he said as the door closed.

-

"Hey um Clarke can I bunk with you tonight?" Cora asked as everyone started to disappear to their tents.

"Yeah of course. Just like old times," she smiled walking into her tent.

"Thanks," she smiled, looking for her stuff. Finding her long sleeve she slipped off her tank and slid on the long sleeve. "Hey I'll be right back," she said walking out her tank top still in her hand. She looked around the camp once more, there were few people on watch but most of the camp was sleeping. On her way to wash out her shirt she'd bumped into a muscular figure. Looking back she saw Bellamy, they babbled a bunch of nothing at the same time.

"How you doing? I mean after everything."

"Shit happens, I'll get over it," she said looking up at him, everything that'd happened was settling. She was pushing the majority of her emotions away where she wouldn't have to deal with them.

"Cora, you don't have to pull any bullshit with me."

"I really don't talk to people about my," her voice faded off as she looked avoided his gaze. She glanced at the ground before looking at him, "Thanks Bell-amy," her face heated up as she avoided calling him Bell.

"No problem Scout."

"I should probably go wash this," she said walking backwards a bit before turning around and walking to the washing area. Cora started scrubbing the blood-stained shirt, her back ached thinking back to what happened, her own screams echoed in her mind as she washed out the last of the blood.

"Cora," she snapped out of her head looking up to see Miller, "Cora."

"Oh, um sorry," she mumbled walking out twisting her tank to get rid of any access water. She walked back to the tent to find Clarke already asleep, hanging her shirt up she lied down next to her drifting off into sleep.

Cora woke up about an hour later to Clarke kicking her out of the bed. "Bloody hell," she mumbled sitting up, she didn't bother to wake Clarke. She stepped outside the tent looking around, she saw the some people on the floor while others were in the drop ship. She didn't feel like bunking somewhere where everyone would just awkwardly stare at her. She cycled through her options; Monty and Jasper, don't wanna go there; Octavia, who was in the drop ship; Finn had a new roommate. "Oh fuck it," she mumbled walking towards the one person left, Bellamy. She walked in expecting to walk out after finding someone in his bed, there wasn't.

"Bellamy," she spoke in a hushed whisper. No response. "Bellamy," she spoke a little louder, his body shifted but no real movement. "Bellamy," she gave him a little kick her voice a normal speaking tone.

His body jolted up, "What? Is something going on? Are you okay?" He rambled on in question looking up at her.

"No, no," she paused exhaling a small laugh through her nose. "I'm fine, the camp's fine. I just- well," her voice drifted away once more as she tried to think how to say what she was thinking.

He questioned her, "well?"

"Clarke kicked me out of the bed. I need somewhere to sleep somewhere besides the drop ship or the ground where everyone can stare at me like funky moss."

"So you thought of me?"

"Well not at first, but dialing down I ended up here."

He paused for a moment before sliding over, "Come on."

She slid under the covers an immediate warmth consumed her body crawling under her skin. "Thanks muscles."

"No problem, Scout." She laid on her side while Bellamy remained on his. In about ten minutes Cora had fallen back asleep. Bellamy watched as she drifted off, all the stress in her body left as her muscles relaxed. She took up a little more space ass she rolled over facing him-he didn't mind-her bruised, cut up face was peaceful instead of being worried how they were gonna make it to tomorrow. He saw beneath all of the smiles and jokes, because she was just as broken as he was underneath.
