Middle of the Night

POV: Bible

Bible felt terrible.

It wasn't just that he was hiding something from Jes, it was the weight sitting on his chest, the gnawing guilt that wouldn't let him breathe properly. He'd gone to bed pretending everything was fine, pretending he could sleep it off. But his thoughts kept circling back to him—the little boy.

Alone. Left by his mother. Dropped in front of a stranger's door.

Bible tossed and turned, his mind racing, his gut twisting. How scared must he be right now?

And, as if the universe wanted to slap him awake for ignoring his conscience, his phone buzzed in the middle of the night.

He glanced to the left—Jes was still asleep, or at least looked like it, his breathing steady.

Quietly, Bible slipped out of bed, phone in hand. He padded barefoot through the hallway and answered in a hushed voice, "Hello?"

It was Mio.

"Bible, hey—sorry. He won't sleep," Mio said, his voice strained and tired. "He's been crying for hours. We tried everything. He keeps asking for his mom. We can't reach Bas, and... I think you're the only one he really connected to."

Bible's heart sank.

Mio added softly, "Can you talk to him? Maybe hearing your voice will calm him down."

But Bible knew just talking over the phone wouldn't cut it.

"I'll come over," Bible said without hesitation.

He hung up, feeling the ache settle even deeper in his chest. The kid didn't choose this. He was just a child who wanted his mother, wanted to feel safe. Bible couldn't ignore that.

Moving as quietly as possible, Bible slipped into the garage, careful not to wake Jes. He grabbed his helmet, swung his leg over his bike, and rode through the silent night toward Mio and JJay's apartment, his heart pounding with a strange mix of guilt, responsibility.

And he was praying.

Praying that Jes wouldn't wake up next to an empty bed. Praying that maybe, just this once, Jes would sleep through the night without noticing.

Yeah right.

My god, Bible, he groaned inwardly, gripping the throttle a little tighter as he sped through the quiet streets. You're making it worse. So much worse.

He could already picture it—Jes waking up, hand reaching out, finding cold sheets instead of him. Jes walking through the house, calling his name, searching every room. Jes realizing he was gone without a word.

Bible squeezed his eyes shut for a second, just the weight of it pressing on him.

Oh, he's gonna lose it. He's gonna kill me.

He shook his head at himself. Idiot. Stupid. You idiot.

But even as he scolded himself, even as his heart pounded with guilt and dread, he didn't slow down. Because that little boy was crying.

The point of telling Jes had long passed.

That train had left the station, caught fire, and crashed into a mountain. Bible was far beyond that now.

There was no turning back.

Inside Mio and JJay's apartment, he could already hear the high-pitched sobs echoing down the hallway. It tugged painfully at his chest. Mio's tired voice followed.

"Bible," he said, dark circles under his eyes. "He's been crying for hours. I don't know what to do anymore. Should we just call the police?"

"No," Bible said firmly. "They'll take him away and drop him into some stranger's house. He's already been through enough. Just... let me try."

Mio stood off to the side, arms crossed, watching him with a mix of surprise and quiet admiration. "Wow. You've changed so much," he said. "You sound... mature."

Bible shot him a side-eye, sighing. "I feel like a total loser. I'm lying to my husband, hiding a whole child, and I have no idea what the hell I'm doing. I don't feel mature. I feel like I'm just making everything worse."

Then he headed into the bedroom.

JJay was sitting at the edge of the bed, gently trying to get the child to sip some water. But the boy's face was red and soaked, his little fists curled against his eyes, body shaking with soft, exhausted cries. He looked like he could barely keep upright, but his tears wouldn't stop.

Bible's heart cracked right open.

He moved slowly, kneeling next to the bed, his voice soft. "Hey... Little champ..."

The boy's sobbing hiccuped, and he peeked out from behind his arm. His lip trembled. When he saw Bible's face, something in him shifted.

He reached for him.

Without a word, Bible climbed onto the bed and pulled him close. The boy curled against his chest like a kitten finally finding warmth. The crying didn't stop right away—but it quieted, a little. Soft, shuddering breaths against Bible's shirt.

Bible held him tightly, running a hand down his back.

What the hell am I doing, he thought.

POV: Jes

After that intense garage make-out and some sweet night cuddles, without sex, because Bible claimed he was "too tired"—Jes had felt... strange.

Not heartbroken, not angry—just off.

Something didn't sit right.

Bible? Exhausted after just hanging out with friends? Bible, who usually had energy for hours of teasing, racing, or—well—Jes?

And then there was Job's text from earlier, which hadn't stopped rattling around in his head: "They're hiding something."

Jes couldn't shake it. Something was fishy. Something real fishy.

And then, Bible's phone rang in the middle of the night.

Jes felt his stomach flip.Who the hell was calling him now?

Instead of speaking up, he stayed still, feigning sleep, but his entire body tensed as Bible quietly slipped out of bed to answer the call.

He only caught fragments, Bible's voice low, worried. No real words. No explanation. Just Bible grabbing his keys and leaving the house. At midnight. On his damn cursed motorbike.

Jes's heart dropped to his stomach.

What the hell? Who is he seeing? Who does he need to meet so badly he can't even wait until morning?

He clenched his jaw so hard it hurt.

This guy is out cheating?!

His entire body burned with a thousand thoughts crashing at once.

Was the sex not good enough? Was he bored? Was the married life too much?Jes sat up on the edge of the bed, running both hands through his hair in frustration.

Bible... what the hell are you doing to me?

And because Jes was a sneaky-ass bastard, he made his move after the first red flag.

That day, after Bible had snuck out without telling him, Jes had felt his gut twist in a way he couldn't ignore. So when Bible was busy showering later, Jes quietly slipped back into the garage.

He crouched down by the bike like some undercover agent and attached a tiny AirTag under the seat, hidden perfectly. Was it a little shady? Sure. Did he feel bad? A bit.

But he also felt good.

It was justifiable. It was preventative care.It was for his own health. This man was his husband, if anyone had the right to be a possessive bastard, it was Jes.

He'd told himself, It's just temporary. Just until I know he's not doing something reckless. Just until I can breathe normally again.

So now, sitting alone in the silent bedroom, after watching Bible sneak out again in the middle of the night, Jes pulled out his phone and opened the tracking app.

The blinking dot glowed on the screen. He stared at it. Closed the app. Opened it again.

Okay, maybe he felt a little bad stalking his own husband, but the situation fully called for it.

Middle of the night. Secret phone call. No explanation. Riding the motorbike straight to God knows where?Nope. Jes wasn't gonna sit this one out.

He yanked on his jacket, grabbed his keys, and stormed out. "If he's out there meeting someone—if he's even breathing in the direction of another man—so help me—"

The rest of the sentence was lost as the garage door banged shut behind him.

As Jes pulled up in front of JJay and Mio's apartment, his mind was already running wild.

Okay... maybe not cheating. I mean, it's Mio and JJay's place. That's a good sign... right?

He parked the car but didn't get out immediately. His jaw was tight, his hands clenched around the steering wheel.

Unless... they're having some kind of private party. Yeah. Like those after-race hangouts. With those girls. What if one of them showed up?

His stomach churned.

What if—no. He wouldn't. Bible wouldn't.

But Jes was spiraling, thoughts stacking on top of each other, anger fueling every new one. And the longer he sat there, the more he burned. He couldn't take it anymore.

He marched to the door and rang the bell. Light was on. Someone was definitely inside. But no one answered.

His chest tightened. Then, panic snapped. He started hammering on the door.

"OPEN!" he shouted. "I know you're in there!" His fists slammed against the wood, heart pounding, fury boiling through his veins.

Finally, the door creaked open, and Mio peeked out with wide, terrified eyes.

"J-Jes..."

Jes didn't wait.

"Yeah. Jes." he snarled, grabbing the edge of the door and forcing it open, barging inside like a man possessed. "What the fuck are you all doing?!"

Mio stumbled back. JJay came rushing from the hallway.

"Jes, wait—"

Jes shoved past him. "WHERE THE FUCK IS HE?!"

"Jes! Please, calm—!"

But it was too late.

Jes was already heading for the bedroom, breath ragged, eyes dark with rage and betrayal. Logic had left the chat. Only one thought blazed behind his eyes:

Catch him in the act. Tear down the lie. Find out the truth.

When Jes shoved open the first bedroom door, ready to catch Bible red-handed in whatever betrayal his brain had invented—

He froze.

The sight in front of him knocked the breath straight out of his lungs.

There, on the bed, Bible was fast asleep, his chest rising and falling in a calm, steady rhythm. And curled up right on top of him, tucked against his shirt, was a small child—sleeping soundly, one tiny fist clutching the fabric of Bible's hoodie.

Jes's brain short-circuited.

The soft bedside lamp cast a warm light over their faces, and for a second Jes thought he might be hallucinating.

Because the kid—The kid looked exactly like Bible.

Same nose, same stubborn pout even in sleep, same dark lashes sweeping across his cheeks. The resemblance was undeniable.

Jes stepped back and quietly pulled the door shut.

He turned to Mio and JJay, who were standing in the hallway with wide eyes and both hands slapped over their mouths, like they were physically holding in their own chaos.

Jes's voice was low, sharp, and shaking."...What the hell is that?"

Mio just blinked. JJay's eyebrows twitched like he was deciding whether to panic or laugh.

Jes dragged a hand down his face, trying to process.„You know what—no. I don't even want a sugar-coated version. I want the truth. Start talking."

"Maybe you two should, um... talk this out..." JJay's voice cracked awkwardly as he pointed over Jes's shoulder.

Jes turned just in time to see the bedroom door creak open.Bible stepped out, moving quietly, carefully closing the door behind him.

Jes's chest tightened.

He wanted to yell—to explode right there—but the sleeping child behind that door had him biting down on his rage.

Bible rubbed his tired eyes, clearly half-asleep, and mumbled, "Guys, I'm heading home. I'll come by tomorrow morning, okay?"

He didn't even look at Jes. Just brushed past them.

JJay and Mio could only nod, both still frozen like guilty statues as Bible shuffled toward the front door.

Jes followed in heavy silence.

When Bible moved to swing his leg over his bike, Jes grabbed his arm and yanked him back with quiet, controlled force.

"Bible." His voice was low, cold, deadly. "You're coming with me."

Bible blinked at him, still too groggy to argue, maybe knowing better than to fight Jes in this mood. He just nodded once and let Jes pull him to the car.

The ride home was painfully awkward.

The only sounds were Jes's ragged breathing and the soft rustle of Bible shifting uncomfortably in his seat, his hoodie pulled up like he could hide inside it.

Jes's jaw was clenched so tight his teeth ached. His fingers gripped the steering wheel like he was trying to snap it in half.

He wanted to wait until they got home. Wanted to keep it together.

But the rage was bubbling too hot, too fast.

His patience snapped somewhere on the road, and with a sharp turn, Jes swerved into an empty, abandoned parking lot, pressing the gas harder than necessary.

The tires screeched as he slammed the brakes.

Bible jolted forward, catching himself just before smacking the dashboard. "JES! What the hell?!"

"YES?!" Jes barked back, finally locking eyes with him.

"Finally!" Jes snapped, his voice sharp and crackling. "Finally you're talking to me! About time you woke the fuck up."

Bible's lips parted, fumbling for words. "I—"

Jes slammed his palm against the steering wheel, breathing hard."What the fuck, Bible? Huh? You want to tell me something?"

Bible gulped hard, his throat bobbing visibly. His fingers fidgeted with the strings of his hoodie, and when he finally forced himself to speak, his voice was so small, it barely made it across the car.

"Maybe... I'm a father."

Jes just stared at him.Blinking. Processing. Completely still.

Then his eyebrow twitched. His jaw flexed.

"...Maybe?" Jes repeated, his voice eerily calm.

Bible's wide, guilty eyes flicked up at him."Yeah... like, maybe? We're doing a DNA test. There's still... you know... a chance? Like, percentage-wise? It's not... confirmed confirmed."

Jes leaned back slowly, dragging a hand down his face like he was trying to physically wipe the moment off his skin.

"Bible. Let me get this straight."His voice was tight, like a wire about to snap."You sneak out in the middle of the night. You lie to me. You let me spiral, thinking you were out cheating on me. And when I finally drag the truth out of you, you tell me—maybe you're a father?!"

Bible pressed himself back against the seat, hoodie practically eating his face now."I didn't... I didn't know how to tell you."

Jes's breath hissed between his teeth. "Oh, that's rich. You didn't know how to tell me you might have a child? A human child?"

"I—"

"How old?" Jes cut him off, voice sharp, slicing through the air like a blade.

Bible shrank into his hoodie, mumbling, "Three."

Jes inhaled so deep, it sounded like he was trying to suck all the oxygen out of the car."So let me get this straight—three years ago, there's a chance you went around planting your damn seed in someone's stomach?!"
