Chapter 9
13:57, 31 May 2021The school doors slam shut, shaking on their hinges as Scott and Stiles grip the handlebars with everything they've got. "Lock it, lock it!" Scott yelled while Sage watched, looking for the alpha. "Do I look like I have a key?"
"Grab something-"
"What?"
"Anything."
The blonde stepped back from the two who were panicking over locking the door, she shut her eyes as she tried to listen for where the alpha was and for Derek's heartbeat. She sighed, opening her eyes before walking towards the door. Looking out the small window, her eyes landed on the bolt cutters that Stiles must have dropped just before they all ran in here.
Stiles must have realised what the girl was thinking. "No. Absolutely not!" Stiles said frantically, noticing where the blonde was staring and shook his head. "You are not going out there." He glanced at his best friend. "Help me out here, Scott."
"He's right. That's a bad idea." Scott said, his tone filled with worry about her possibly getting eaten by the alpha. Sage just looked over at the human who's heart was beating frantically, she frowned, not liking the fact that he was scared.
"I'm your protector Stiles, my job is to protect you." But before Stiles could argue with her, the girl ran out of the school. The two teens looked out of the small window as they watched her, Stiles's heart was racing so fast he felt like it was going to jump right out, but he couldn't help it. It didn't matter if she was a vampire or his protector, his gaze was only on her- worried the alpha would get to her.
His breath caught in his throat when he saw the alpha creep out from behind his jeep, but before he could scream at her to run she had already ran to the door, shoving it open- before placing the bolt cutters between the bars- keeping it closed.
"Don't ever do that again."
"What?" She asked, giving him a questioning look, wondering why he looked so mad especially after she told him it was her duty to protect him.
"Put your life at risk." He exclaimed and she gave him a stunned look.
"Stiles, I'm your guardian-"
"I don't care! Don't do that again, please?" She frowned when he whispered the last part at her, she never meant to worry him- but she knew she could never promise him something like that. It was her duty to protect him.
"Guys! We need to go. That won't hold forever."
Before Sage could retort, she heard the alpha howl, somewhere in the school. She couldn't tell where it was coming from because it seemed to come from every direction. Before she could try and track it down, she was dragged by Stiles as they started running. They soon had made there way into a classroom, she watched out of the window, listening for both Derek and the alpha. She could hear Derek's heartbeat, it was faint but still there.
"We get to my jeep, we get out of here," Stiles said a bit pointedly as his eyes flickered to the blonde who he wasn't going to let out of his sights again. He gave his bestfriend a look. "And you seriously think about quitting your job, good?" Both the boys walked over to Sage who was still scanning the parking lot.
Stiles sighed when he watched as Scott tried to open the window. "No, they don't open. The school's climate-controlled."
"Then we break it." Scott said and Sage squinted at him, "Which would cause a lot of noise." She said making him sigh. "So then we run really fast." They glance back to the Jeep. Now seeming much further away, "Really fast."
While Stiles and Scott start looking for something to break one of the windows, Sage eyes squinted when she looked over at Stiles's jeep. "Stiles?" She said making him look over at her, "What's wrong with the hood of your Jeep?" She asked and he looked at her confused. "What do you mean? Nothing's wrong."
"It's bent."
"You mean dented?!"
"No, I mean bent." Sage's eyes winded when she realised what was happening.
"Get down!" She snapped, pulling the two down against the wall as something flew threw the window and landed on the floor. Stiles held onto her, shedding her from the glass that shattered in the classroom.
The buzz-cut haired boy shakily pointed the flashlight at the object. "That's my battery."
He tried to stand up but was pushed down by Sage who kept her hand on his chest to keep him down. "Don't." She whispered, "I'll check." She leaned over his body to check if she could see the alpha.
Scott glared at his friend, smelling the scent of lust in the air- "Really?" Stiles shrugged sheepishly, he knew now wasn't the right time to be thinking of the blonde like that but he couldn't help it. Before Scott called and interrupted them, he was so sure that they were gonna kiss. It was all he could think about, but right now he knew that he needed to think about them getting out of here.
"Anything?" Scott asked the girl, she shook her head still keeping an eye out.
"Move now?" She nodded. Stiles laced his fingers with her, dragging her out as they all run out of the classroom. They glance down the opposite ends of the corridor, nervously drifting forward. "This way." Scott said but Stiles stopped him, "No, no--somewhere without windows."
"Every single room in this building has windows." Scott retorted, neither her nor Stiles noticed they were still holding hands. "Somewhere with less windows." He said and then realization crossed over Sage's features, "The locker room."

They walked into the locker room, Scott turned around to face Stiles. "Call your dad."
"And tell him what?" Stiles asked.
He shrugged, his eyes flickering around anxiously. "I don't know, anything. Gas leak, a fire, whatever. If that thing sees the parking lot filled with cop cars, it'll take off."
"It won't." The blonde spoke up making the two boys look over at her. "The rage coming off him is strong, he will kill anything in his way."
"They have guns." Scott persisted.
"Yeah, and Derek had to be shot with a wolfsbane - laced bullet to even slow him down, you remember that?" Stiles snapped.
Scott flinched, giving his friend an apologetic look. "Then we - we have to - We have to find a way out and just run for it."
"There's nothing near the school for at least a mile."
"What about Derek's car?" Sage suggested, knowing that the only car that was left unharmed was the older wolf's car, she could have speed Stiles out of here but she knew she couldn't leave the young werewolf.
Stiles blinked, nodding his head. "That could work. We go outside, we get the keys off his body, and then we take his car."
"And him," Scott added, taking note of how his friend failed to mention them taking Derek with them. Sage scoffed slightly, she didn't care if they took Derek or not, she just wanted to get Stiles away from this horror scene as soon as possible. The three started heading towards the door and Stiles reached to grab the door handle but before he could, Sage grabbed his wrist, stopping him. He gave her a questioning look. "What?"
"I heard something." She mumbled, staring at the door as she concentrated her hearing.
"Like what?" Scott asked, also doing his best to listen.
She made Stiles put down the flashlight. "Someone's coming. We need to hide." She said in a rush. Stiles quickly dragged the blonde with him into an available locker- ignoring his bestfriends calls.
At first, all he was thinking about was protecting the blonde, but his breathing hitched when he realised how close they were. Chest to chest close. Sage could hear how rapid is heart was beating but she didn't know if it was because of the predicament they were in right now with the alpha or if it was because of her.
She reached down and laced her fingers with his, she knew that it would either cause the boy's breathing to increase or it would calm him down. Fortunately for her, his breathing started to slow down as he looked into her eyes.
It would have been a loving moment between the two, but the sudden sound of footsteps alerted the two. Suddenly the door of the locker Scott was in opened, followed by a scream of surprise making Sage and Stiles scrambled out of their locker to see the janitor. "Son of a bitch!" Scott grabs him, trying to keep the terrified man on his feet, "Quiet-quiet!
The older man gave them a look of annoyance. "Quiet my ass, what the hell are you trying to do, kill me? All three of you get out."
"Will you just listen for half a second, okay?" Stiles whispered harshly.
"Not okay." He snapped, he began to shove the three of them out of the locker room. "Get the hell out of here right now."
"God, just one second to explain," Stiles said exasperated as he looked at the older man in irritation, the janitor wasn't having any of it though, he pushed the three teens out of the locker room ignoring the pleads of the boys. Sage's body tensed when she caught the faint scent of the alpha.
"Just shut up and go." He exclaimed harshly, giving the three stern looks. He screamed when he was pulled back into the locker room and the door slammed shut, sealing his fate. The older man's face came slamming into the window, they stagger away in shock as the body of the Janitor slams forward again, rattling the door in its frame.
Scott grabs at the door, trying to get it open, trying to help the man as Sage pulls him back, "You can't help him." The blonde said, shaking her head. They all finally run for it, racing down the corridor as the locker room door wrenches off its hinges.
The three teens race towards the fire exit that came into view, the boys reach for the handle at the same time- readying to leave the school of horrors, but only to be stopped by a dumpster.
"He pushed it up against the door." Scott looked at the blonde in question, "Can't you try, I mean you're supernatural." Sage shook her head at the boy, silently beating herself up. "I'm not at full strength right now, I haven't fed since this morning."
"W-what, fed?!" The teen wolf asked in disbelief.
"Yes fed. It's what vampires do you know." But her statement didn't do anything but make the horror on Scott's face grow.
"Vampire!?" Scott exclaimed giving a wide-eyed look as he looked between her and his bestfriend. Sage looked over to the buzz cut haired boy who nervously scratched the back of his head, "You didn't tell him?"
"In my defence, a lot of things have come up since you told me. I just forgot." Sage sighed before shaking her head at the boy, she dragged him along with her as the three tried to look for another way out.
"I'm not dying here. I'm not dying in school."
"You're not going to die." The blonde said to the boy.
"What's it doing? What does it want?"
"Me. Derek says it's stronger with a pack," Scott answered thinking back to what Derek told him days ago.
"Great. A psychotic werewolf who's into teamwork. That's beautiful." Stiles said sarcastically. Sage's body tensed when she felt the hairs on the back of her neck stand up, Scott noticing the girl had stopped, turns towards the wall of windows, looking out into the courtyard. On the roof across from the building they were in, was a figure crouched down in darkness. Red eyes gazing right at them.
Sage grabbed Stiles hand, hauling them down the corridor- Scott right by their side. Behind them, the sound of glass shattering warned them that the Alpha had managed to gain upon them, chasing them in the school corridors.
