Chapter Twenty Three

06:34, 9 July 2013

*Niall's P.O.V*

The morning alarm startled me, causing me to jump in my thin and uncomfortable bed. Pulling the scratchy sheets over my head, I let a moan of exhaustion escape my lips as I turn over in bed. Moving my arm out to the side, I pull at the sheets, "Come 'ere Andi," I mumble. With no response, I extend my arm, but my hand connects with the cold wall. "Shit," I sigh, rubbing my face with the other hand. Now my hand, and my heart hurt.

"Who's Andi?" Asks a voice from across the room. Rolling over, I see my cell mate, Josh, propped up on both elbows.

I squinted at him, "She's my...never mind," I said looking away. I didn't want to talk about her here, they didn't need to know about her.

"She's your girlfriend," Josh stated. I glanced at him puzzlingly, and he just shrugged his shoulders, "You kept saying her name last night in your sleep. And if she was just your friend, you would have said that."

"Yeah, she is," I mumbled, laying back down to stare at the ceiling. So whether or not I wanted Andi to be know around here, she was.

"What happened to her?"

"Dude, just let it drop?" I snapped nastily. He sighed and laid back down as well. I felt bad, Josh wasn't that bad of a kid, he was here on drug charges, but still. He was pretty decent to me when I came to the cell, so I guess I shouldn't have bitched at him.

"Look, sorry man," I said sighing, "I just really miss my girlfriend." I ran my hand through my hair and pulled at the roots. Everyday without Andi was like a day in hell. I just hoped she was okay, where ever she was.

"Same, I got a girl, Veronica. She's here too, we got busted together," Josh said with a slight chuckle. "Anyway, how did you end up here? I mean, I told you. So its only fair, right?"

"I guess," I replied. It wasn't like I had anything other to do here. And we still had time to waste until we were let out for lunch. "Some guy liked my girlfriend, way older then her. He tried to hurt her, so I fought back for her, and he ended up killing himself when we were fighting. Now I'm being charged for a  murder I didn't commit," I finished.

Josh gave me a funny look, "What was the guys name?"

"Tony? Why?"

He quickly got out of this bed and strode over to the doors, looking back and forth to check for any officers or guards. Returning to his seat, Josh leaned forward and motioned for me to do the same. "Dude, Tony is really well known around here, he's a big shot from what I hear," he whispered.

I pointed to my black eye, "I can tell."

Josh went on, "The guys here think I don't listen to their conversations, but I do. Tony use to be a popular supplier to the inmates here, he got paid a shit load."

I narrowed my eyes, thinking back, "Then why did he work as a janitor?"

"To keep a low profile? I don't know Niall," he answered. "But when everyone found out he was dead, shit hit the fan. And that's probably why you got roughed up the other day."

"How did he end up supplying here? And how did everyone pay him?" I asked. I needed to know as much as possible about this guy to help my case. And if this kid was willing to give anything up just to make a friend, I was going to take it.

Josh ran his hands through his hair, then wiped them on his pants, "All I know is that he use to be here, as an inmate. And people here have away of paying up, one way or another," he said trailing off.

"I guess your right...," I mumbled. It seemed like that was all he was going to tell me, for now at least.

"Hey Niall?" Josh called after a few moments of silence, "Did you really kill Tony?"

I looked at my hands; dirty and filled with cuts and scrapes. I missed having Andi to hold onto, but I didn't know if she left the same. Maybe she was happy to be split up, not have any drama in her life for a while. It might even help her get better, me not being with her. And that's what truly hurt.

I finally looked up and answered Josh's question, "No, I didn't. But if I had to, to protect Andi, I would have."

Josh kinda laughed and replied, "That's hardcore man, you must really love her."

"Yeah, I do," I murmured as a guard came around to let us out to go to lunch.

The man gave us a knowing look, as if he heard our entire conversation. "All right boys," he said, "Time for lunch. You don't have to eat, but you do have to follow the rules of the cafeteria."

Josh and I got up from our beds and exited the cell, glancing at the officer as we left. "Would you like to join us for a bite, Officer?" Josh called over his back when we got a safe distance away.

"Not today, I'm busy enjoying my freedom here," he called back.

"Damn, he got you good!" I laughed as we entered the café. When we went our separate ways, his face was still red from embarrassment.

I got in line behind a teenage girl with ratty blonde hair and dark eye makeup, and tried to strike up a conversation, "Hey, I'm Niall?"

She turned around and gave me a soft smirk, "Perrie," she said. "Do you think I should go for the mushy carrots, or the undercooked hamburger?"

I smiled, "Personally, I prefer the warm milk." She in turn laughed and we both stepped forward in the line, getting closer to our sickening food choices.

Perrie stopped moving suddenly, and turned toward me, moving her pointed finger in a way that would mean for me to come closer. So I did, "Yeah?"

"What would you rather do, try to eat this shitty food, or go have some fun?" She whispered in my ear.

I imminently took a step back and shook my head, "I have a girlfriend, I'm not really into that kinda thing."

Perrie sighed loudly and placed both hands on her hips, "I wasn't talking about sex, you idiot," she lowered her voice, "I was talking about heroine."

I raised my eyebrows, "What makes you think I'm on that?"

She then turned her  head the looked at Josh, who responded with a shy shrug. Looking back at me, she flashed me a sarcastic grin, "We're kinda friends, and he told me you seemed a little tense. We're all friends here, Niall. So why not take a break from worrying about Ally, and have a good time with me?" She purred in my ear.

"Andi, her name is Andi," I said stuttering. Perrie's hand then slid up my leg, and then took hold of my own. Pulling me out of the lunch line, we began to walk, getting closer and closer to the door with each step.

I had about thirty seconds to make up my mind about this. I didn't know who this Perrie chick was, or why she was in here. She might be a murderer for all I know. But, what she said was true, I was too tense, and I hadn't taken heroine since I got to the hospital with my dad. I don't even remember what it feels like to be on it.

We were getting closer to the door, and Perrie stopped and turned toward me, "So, are you in or out?"

Andi's face flashed in my mind, causing me to think rationally for a second. What would happen if we got busted? Would I ever get out of here, even if I get cleared? But then I thought of all the things she was doing, while I was stuck here. She could be with another guy for all I know.

Looking back at Josh, I gave him a quick nod to thank him, and returned my attention back to Perrie, "Let's go."

*Later*

"Holy shit man, it feels good to be high again," I say laughing, as my head rolls onto my shoulder.

"You look like, like, like a leprechaun like that!" Perrie giggled as pointed her tiny fingers at me.

She had taken me to the girls bathroom, putting a "Out Of Order" sign on the front and locking the door. There was another bathroom on this level, so nobody would bother us. She was actually smart about this. It was surprising for a bottle blonde like her.

"Now, aren't you glad you came with me?" She asked as she splashed her hands in a small puddle next to the sink.

"Ye- yeah," I mumbled as I slumped down against the white wall. I was beginning to feel light headed, which usually meant I was going to pass out. It use to happen when I first starting taking heroine.

Rolling her head, Perrie looked at the clock above my head, and a interested expression spread across her face. "Oh," she said with a giggle, "I have to go talk to Josh, we were suppose to meet up ten minutes ago."

"Why?" I slurred out.

She gripped the side of the porcelain sink and tied to pull herself up, "I, I, I help him get his girlfriend what she needs. She's really, really bad when she's detoxing. Bad withdrawal," Perrie mumbled as she finally got to her feet and started towards the door.

I tried to get to my feet to stop her, "Wha- wait. How am I going to get rid of this stuff?" I said with struggle.

Holding on to the handle, Perrie pointed at the stall, "I flushed it down, you'll be fine," she pulled the door open and took a few steps out, but returned. "Have fun, tell Andi I said 'hi'," Perrie added with a wink.

I chuckled and rolled my head to my other shoulder to view her, "Who's Andi?" I asked before the darkness took over.
