Crying Wolf

00:09, 25 June 2019

*AGE CHANGE FROM 12 to 14; Birthday no longer on Founder's Day*

Emma was awoken by the sound of a phone ringing, causing her to groan in annoyance. The night before, Emma, Elena, and Bonnie had a sleepover with Caroline, to make her feel better after being kidnapped by revengeful werewolves. And boy, did they have fun. So fun that they all fell asleep on Caroline's bed, even though it was a very tight fit for all of them. Well, the girls would be sleeping if it wasn't for Elena's phone.

"Go away." Caroline mumbled, shoving Elena off the bed.

Elena fell with a 'oof', thankfully falling on top of pillows that were left on the floor. She reached up to the dresser and flipped the phone open. "Hello?"

"Elena!" Caroline complained, followed by a 'shh' and a 'outside' from Bonnie and Emma.

Elena rolled her eyes, and crawled out the door.

"Emma," Caroline groaned, stuffing her face on her pillow. "why didn't you have like a vision or something so that we could've made sure Elena's phone would be far, far, far away from us?" she asked, her voice muffled so much Emma almost didn't understand what she said.

"Care, it doesn't work like that." Emma sighed out, laying on her back. "I don't know how to make it happen."

"Well, it would have been nice to have a couple more minutes of sleep." Bonnie said, sitting up and rubbing her eyes.

Elena crawled back into Caroline's bedroom and started to pack her stuff. "Sorry to cut this short, but I got romantic plans with Stefan."

Emma frowned and wrapped herself in her blanket. "Aw, can't we stay just a little but longer?" she asked, staring at Elena with puppy eyes.

Elena laughed as she threw a t-shirt in her bag. "By all means, you can stay. But don't you have to go to the tea party with Jenna today?"

Emma let out a loud and long groan, hiding herself underneath all the blankets.

"Thought so. Here." Elena tossed Emma her bag. "Get packing."

It took the girls maybe 5 minutes to pack their stuff. Bonnie and Caroline had said they were going to The Grill, so the four went their separate ways. When the sisters got home, Elena begged Jenna to allow her to go to the lake house they had in Dunham Lake, which Jenna was very reluctant to say yes to. Elena hugged Jenna and ran up to her room to get ready as Emma tried to hide from their aunt.

"No, no, no, young lady. You have to get ready for the tea party." Jenna said, crossing her arms.

"But I don't want to wear a dress, Jennaaa." Emma complained, dragging out Jenna's name.

Jenna scoffed. "What's wrong with the dress I got you last week?"

"I don't know, I just don't like wearing it."

Jenna rolled her eyes and pointed upstairs. "Quit complaining like a baby and get ready." Jenna demanded.

Emma sighed and slowly went upstairs, slouching as she went. The dress was simple, nothing too fancy. It was a white short sleeve dress, that stopped just above her knees. It was slim fitted, with a lace floral pattern. Well, it was a nice dress but Emma was just not the kind of girl to want to wear a dress. To make herself more comfortable, she put on a black flowy cardigan. Tossing on random flats and a quick check in the mirror, Emma ran downstairs.

"I'm ready." she announced, folding her hands in front of her.

Jenna emerged from the living room and smiled. "See? Was that so hard?" she said, grabbing her jacket off the coat rack. She continued to smile when she noticed the locket Emma was wearing. "I see you have the locket on."

Emma unconsciously grasped the locket. "Yeah, I wanted to start wearing it more."

Jenna rubbed the girls back. "Good choice. Now, let's go." she said and they drove to the Lockwood's mansion.

When the entered the house, there were many people there, all from the Founding Families dressed in their best. The two had given their bags to the waiter person, to put away, and they talked around the place. They were greeted by some of them, which was a little awkward since Emma didn't know them at all. Luckily, she did know Carol Lockwood, who greeted them briefly before she was sucked into a different conversation elsewhere. And that person just so happened to be Elijah. Emma and Elijah made eye contact from a distance, making Emma turn away sharply and almost running into Damon.

"Damon, what are you doing here?" Jenna asked.

"Hi." a woman said, walking up to the three. "You came."

Damon smiled brightly at her. "Hi." he greeted and the two shared a kiss.

Emma's jaw dropped, obviously confused on what was going on. Damon saw Emma and Jenna both have bewildered looks and nodded towards the other woman.

"Thanks for introducing us, Jenna." he said, walking away.

The woman stepped closer to Jenna and Emma and watched Damon leave. "Ahh. Wow." she breathed, staring longingly at Damon.

Emma scrunched up her nose and looked up at Jenna, for a little help.

"Oh, Emma, this is Andy Starr. She's a reporter for the news." Jenna explained.

Andy held out her hand. "Hi, Emma. It's so nice to meet you." she said, in an annoying voice.

Emma awkwardly smiled at her and shook her hand. "Hi." She looked over at Jenna. "I'm gonna go walk around." she said and followed Damon.

Though, Damon and Elijah walked off and Emma ended up spotting Alaric, so she stood next to him as they watched the two vampires go into a room alone.

"I have a bad feeling about this." she commented, crossing her arms tightly.

Alaric nodded. "You and me both." Sadly, John appeared.

"What's Damon doing with Elijah?" he asked.

"How would I know?" Alaric shot, giving John a lazy look.

"Because you're his little helper."

Emma smiled knowingly. "Takes one to know one."

"You know, Emma, I wonder what Jenna would think if she found out what her niece and boyfriend are up to these days. I mean, she can't stay in the dark forever." John threatened.

Alaric glared at John. "You're a dick."

"I don't think you sleep over anymore. It's inappropriate with children in the house." John demanded, pulling on Emma's arm. "And the ring Isobel gave you, that's mine. I want back." he said, narrowing his eyes on last time at Alaric before dragging Emma away.

"Hey, let me go." she protested, struggling against his grip.

"Knock it off, Emma." John said, tightening his hold on her. He took her to a secluded area in the mansion and pushed her into a corner, so she would have no way to escape. "You need to stop acting like you're an adult."

Emma glared up at the man. "You can't tell me what to do. You're not my dad. I don't even recognize you as my uncle."

"You are going to end up getting yourself killed if you keep this up. Now, I made a promise to your parents to keep you guys safe and damn it, that's what I'm going to do."

"Go to hell!" Emma sneered.

John raised his hand to slap Emma, making her flinch back, but his arm was caught by a bloodied hand.

"Not cool, John." Damon said, pushing him back. Damon kneeled down in front of Emma. "You good, pipsqueak?"

Emma nodded, quickly glancing behind Damon at John who was rubbing his arm. "Yeah, what happened to you?" she asked, gesturing to the bloody wound on his neck.

"Long story. Come on, let's go." Damon wrapped an arm around Emma's shoulders and used his vampire speed to go to the boarding house.

Alaric had arrived a few minutes later, bringing Emma's shoulder bag she left behind. Damon had poured himself and Alaric a glass of bourbon and the two men lounged on the leather couches, while Emma took the time to text Jenna, telling her how she left the party.

"Today was a bust." Damon admitted, staring up at the ceiling.

Alaric nodded in agreement. "Yeah. How's the throat?"

"Sore."

Emma let out a giggle as she put her phone down on the end table. "Can't believe you let Elijah stab you."

"Hey, in my defense, he caught me off guard." Damon said, pointing at the girl.

"Well, Elijah is one scary dude with great hair." Alaric commented. He got up and reached for Damon's glass. "Want another one?" Damon nodded and gave it to him.

The vampire let out a sigh. "He's going to be hard to kill."

"Yeah, I'd think twice before trusting a dagger and ashes to do the job." Alaric agreed.

"Maybe we should avoid killing Elijah since it's impossible to kill him and he could easily kill us." Emma suggested, plopping down on one of the couches.

"Sorry, but that's not an option, no matter how we look at it." Alaric said, filling up the glasses. "We just need more info."

"I'm all out of sources." Damon exclaimed.

"What's up with you and this new chick?" Alaric questioned, handing Damon his drink and sitting next to Emma.

"She's got spunk, huh." Damon said, wiggling his eyebrows.

"She's weird." Emma said, raising an eyebrow.

Damon smirked. "Aw, you jealous?" Emma threw a pillow at him, which he easily tossed aside.

"Just don't kill her, please. She's friends with Jenna and I hate lying to her." Alaric asked.

"If I did, who would report her death?" Damon joked, taking a sip of his drink.

"Just don't." Alaric asked. He reached into his pocket and looked at his phone, seeing the time. "Oh, god, I gotta go. I got to pick Jenna up. Don't worry, I'll show myself out." He waved bye to Emma and left the library.

Emma sighed, leaning back. "I'm so tired."

"Then go-" A loud crash noise interrupted Damon.

The two looked at each other before making their way over. They went past the door way to the library and saw Alaric groaning in pain with a knife through is abdomen. Emma's eyes widened in shock as Alaric dropped to the floor. Suddenly, a figure jumped down from the ceiling behind the two and growled at them.

Emma let out a scream as the man charged towards Damon. Damon used his strength to fight the man but the guy jumped on his back and stabbed him with a syringe.

"Emma." Damon groaned out, slamming the guy on his back against a wall. "Run."

She nodded and sprinted for the front door. But when she opened it, there were more intruders on the other side. She back up and moved to run away but her arms were caught in iron tight grips. She was guided more into the house, where Alaric's body was. Emma saw Damon on the floor as well and seemed to be injected with vervain.

"Damon!" she shouted, only to be punched in the gut by one of the trespassers. She lurched forward and let out a grunt from the blow.

Jules appeared in front of Emma and faked a frown. Of course, they were werewolves. She turned around to face Damon, waving her gun. "Hey, Damon. It's nice to see you again."

Damon weakly looked up before passing out.

"What do we do with the girl? We can't kill her." One of the guys holding her asked Jules.

Jules looked at Emma. "True. But we can use her to our advantage. Hurry up and tie him up. And keep her here." she instructed.

Everyone followed their orders. A couple of guys carried Damon back into the library and tied him up with multiple chains in a chair in front of the fireplace. Then they laid Alaric down on the floor by the chair, removing the knife from his gut. The guy who had attacked Damon placed a collar with mini stakes on it around his neck. The men holding Emma dragged her into the library and stood off to the side with Jules as they waited for Damon to wake up. When he finally came to, the man tilted his head and smiled at him.

"Morning, sunshine." Damon groaned upon seeing him. "I saw this movie once, some torture porn flick. Anyway, they had this collar device that was really cool, so I just modified it so with some wooden nails, and when I pull. . ." The guy pulled on the chains attached to the collar, causing the wood to stab at Damon's neck.

"Leave him alone!" Emma yelled, struggling against the guys' grip.

"Shut up." a guy said, punching her in the face. She let a loud gasp as she tried to keep in the tears that were forming from the pain. The punch left a small gash on her face, a tiny bit of blood coming out of the wound.

"I hear you have the moonstone." Jules said, she and everyone behind her advancing forward.

Damon stole a glance at Emma and saw the red mark on her face, making him clench his fists together. He recovered quickly recovered to a more relaxed expression and started to laugh.

"Oh, if only you knew the irony of this moment right now." Damon said, referring to when he killed Mason in the very room. "Let me tell you how this is gonna go. You're gonna torture me, I don't talk, someone loses a heart. Last time, it was your boy Mason."

"This time, it will be you." Jules countered and the guy pulled on the chain again, Damon groaning loudly. "Or, it could be her." Jules said, pointing at Emma.

Damon scoffed and shook his head. "Yeah, right. You wouldn't hurt a kid."

Jules shrugged and pointed her shot gun at Emma. "Would I? You know what the great thing about buckshot is? It scatters through the body. Maximum damage." She cocked the gun. "Where's the moonstone?"

Damon shook his head. "Get over it, honey. You're never gonna get it."

"You looking for this?" a voice said.

Everyone turned to see Elijah causally leaning against the banister, holding the moonstone. Emma furrowed her eyebrows in confusion. What was he doing here? Elijah tossed the stone in the air and proceeded to walk forward and set it down on the table.

"Go ahead. Take it." he said, gesturing toward it.

One of the werewolves sped forward but Elijah quickly shoved his hand into the guys chest, pulling out his heart. Emma let out a gasp as his body slumped on the couch. The ones holding Emma let go of her and tried attacking him but he did the exact same thing to them. Jules bolted out the door, leaving behind the guy who made to collar. The guy pretended to hide using his shirt but it was obvious Elijah saw him.

"What about you, sweetheart?" Elijah asked, making him stand up. "No? Yes? Where's the girl?"

"I don't know." Damon said from the chair.

Elijah looked back at the guy. "It doesn't matter." And he punch him, hard enough to snap his neck to the side.

Damon whistled at Emma, who was stunned from the scene she just witnessed. "Yo, Gilbert, you think you could let me out?"

Emma snapped out of her trance and went over to the tied up vampire. She picked up the chains but realized she had nothing to break him out with. Elijah gently pushed her aside and ripped the chains off. He stood back.

"So you realized this is the third time I've saved your life now?" he informed Damon.

They stared at each other before Elijah turned and walked out, taking the moonstone with him. Damon got up from the chair and used his hands to tear the collar off him.

"Are you okay?" Emma asked, rubbing her arm.

Damon rubbed his neck and looked at the blood on his hand. "Eh, I'll live." He gestured towards her. "What about you? You got hit pretty hard on the face."

Emma raised a hand and touched to cheek that was hit and hissed when she pressed on it. She used her cardigan to lightly press on the wound to wipe away the blood. "I'm fine. I'm just not excited about how Jenna's going to react when she sees my face."

Damon vamped away and came back with a large band-aid and a frozen bag of peas. "Here, use these."

As she put the band-aid on and pressed the bag on her cheek, Damon started cleaning up the mess left by the werewolves, their bodies still spread around the room. His phone rang and when he answered it, it was Bonnie on the other line. After he pressed the speaker button, Bonnie informed them of the information she got from Luka.

"So he planned to kill her all along." Damon established, moving aside the chair he was tied to.

"Yeah, the sacrifice is part of Elijah's plan." Bonnie said.

"Got it, loud and clear." Damon said, hanging up the phone. When he did, Alaric groaned, waking up. "Finally. You missed all the fun." He picked up the chains as Alaric glanced around.

After a while, Alaric decided to call Jenna once he was level headed.

"Hey, yeah, I was grading papers." Alaric lied, almost getting hit in the head by the rug Damon was carrying out. "I fell asleep, I'm sorry. Jenna, I'm a jerk." There was a pause and Emma watched as Alaric let out a silent sigh of relief. "Tomorrow I'm all yours, okay? Goodnight." he said, hanging up the phone.

Emma sat on the couch silently, with the bag of peas still on her face. She thought about what Bonnie said. Elijah didn't want to help save Elena at all. He was just using her to get to Klaus. How could Elena not see that? Well, maybe she did and she was just going to go with it without telling anyone. She was going to sacrifice herself for them. Emma wasn't sure how she felt about that. There was no way she was going to allow her sister to die that easily, not on her watch.

Damon reentered the room. "Okay, Em, want me to take you home?" he asked, wiping his hands on his jeans.

Emma shook her head. "Actually, can I stay here for the night? And don't worry, there's a room that has a change of clothes for me." she asked, taking the bag off her face. Her cheek felt numb and cold on her finger tips.

"Um, I guess?" Damon answered, giving an uncertain look at Alaric. "When did you leave clothes here?"

"Back when Stefan went rogue." Emma explained. She turned on her phone and let Jenna know she was staying at Caroline's house again. If she told Jenna she was staying at the boarding house, there was no way she would have said yes.

Emma grabbed her shoulder bag that she left on the floor next to one of the couches and made her way to the room she talked about. When she entered the bedroom, she quickly changed into some pajamas and brought her bag with her to the bed. Opening the bag, she pulled out the book she got from Elijah, as well as some of the other books she had that were part of Isobel's research. She 'forgot' to give them back to Alaric. Emma spent that night reading every page and every note in all of the books.
