Chapter 12

22:35, 21 March 2022

"I'd like to see you try." You pouted. He raised an eyebrow, took his hand off the door, and stepped towards you, moving as though he was going to pick you up again. "Okay!" You squeaked as you retreated back to the bed. "Fine! Happy?" You sat down on it, and he smirked.

"Thank you."

You rolled your eyes and folded your arms over your chest.

"Do you want a Tshirt to sleep in?" He asked.

"No it's okay. I'll sleep in this and change at home before I go to work." You explained. He nodded, and turned to the door. You felt weird, putting him out like this, taking up his bed. "Do you..." You swallowed. "Do you want to just share?"

You saw his entire body freeze instantly. His hand poised just over the door handle. His back to you. He didn't respond. You opened your mouth again, ready to repeat your question, when he finally turned his head.

"You mean share the bed?" He asked, and his voice sounded off. You nodded at him.

"It's your bed. It's big enough. Seems unfair that this is your place, I'm crashing over, and you don't even get to sleep in your own bed." You said simply. His hand slowly went to the door handle and rested on it.

"I don't think Adam would appreciate that." He muttered. You felt something hot flash through you.

"I don't really care what Adam thinks at the minute. And it's not like we're hooking up. Just sleeping next to each other." You rushed to say. Peter kept your eye contact. You chewed your lip as you waited for his response.

His hand slid off the door handle.

"Are you okay with that?" He finally asked.

"Wouldn't offer it if I wasn't." You pointed out, and he almost smiled.

"Fine. I sleep on the right." He said as he pointed to his side. You nodded stiffly as you stood and walked round to the left. You also slept on the right, but this was his house and his bed. You could sleep on the left for one night.

Peter walked round to his side, and there was a moment of pause where you caught each other's eyes before starting to undress. It was awkward. You usually chucked everything off, but you were quite aware of your friend on the other side of the room. So you carefully pushed your jeans down after putting your phone on the side table, and really carefully pulled your bra out from under your top. You could tell that he was trying to be careful as well. Until he grabbed his Tshirt and pulled it over his head.

You quickly diverted your eyes and hurried to get under the duvet.

Okay, so you were human. Peter was an attractive man, with an insane body. It caught you off guard.

That's what you chanted in your head to dampen down the feeling in your lower abdomen.

He slid in next to you, and you saw that there was a gap between the two of you. You reached out for your phone, setting your alarm for the next morning. Luckily you weren't scheduled at work until 10am, and Peter didn't live too far, so you didn't have a super early wake up call to annoy him with.

You put your phone back down, and snuggled into his bed. The last time you were here, you hadn't really appreciated how good his bed was. Because his bed was really good. The mattress was soft. The duvet was fluffy. You felt like you were wrapped in a cloud. The feeling must have been obvious, as you suddenly heard Peter chuckle from beside you.

"You look like you're really enjoying yourself there." He said.

"You have such a good bed." You replied as you wiggled down further in your warm cocoon. "I think I might steal it."

"Good luck with that. I spent a lot of money on this bed, it's never leaving my possession."

You both shifted a bit, ending up facing each other, just breathing slowly as your mind raced.

"We never talked about what we're gonna do." He whispered suddenly. You snapped your eyes up to his.

"About what?"

"Adam."

You inhaled sharply. Then you rolled on your back, staring at the ceiling.

"Sorry." He said from beside you.

"We can think of that tomorrow." You answered, a horrible feeling settling into your chest. "Goodnight Peter."

"Goodnight Sugar." He said, and you smiled a little, before turning onto your other side, facing away from him, and closing your eyes.

When you woke up the next morning, your brain took a few moments to catch up with everything.

First, it was the fact that you were in Peter's bed again, not your own. And your alarm was ringing, which you quickly shut off.

Second, it was the fact that yesterday you found out that Adam had been lying to you for months about working late.

Third, it was the fact that you had an arm around your waist.

As you blinked away the sleepiness, you twisted your head round to see Peter snuggled up behind you, laying on his front, his face turned to you so that it was mere inches from yours. One knee was tucked up behind yours, the other stretched out down the bed, and his arm was over your waist. His mouth was open the tiniest bit, letting out hot bursts of air everytime he exhaled. His bare skin was exuding heat into you.

There was a strong urge to snuggle into him.

You slowly started to slide off the edge of the bed, moving one limb at a time, until you heard a sharp inhale from behind you, and the arm on your waist tightened briefly.

"Whas-going on?" He mumbled in a crackly low voice. You turned to face him, watching his eyes flutter open and look over at you. He instantly pulled his arm off you. "Sorry." He added as he used the same hand to rub the sleep out of his eyes.

"Morning." You said softly, with a slight smile as he yawned and rolled onto his back. "I have to start getting ready." He just nodded at you, and you got up off the bed. "Can I nick some coffee and food?"

"Yeah, you know where it is." He said as he yawned again, not moving at all. You padded to the kitchen, opening his cupboards and starting the coffee machine. You also grabbed some bread and started making yourself some toast.

Once the coffee pot started filling up, and you were buttering your toast, you heard his footsteps behind you.

"Watch out," He muttered groggily, putting a hand on your back as he squeezed round you, grabbing his own bread and putting it in the toaster. His hand stayed on your back until walked over to the coffee pot, getting two mugs out of the cupboard above it. You went back to buttering your toast, which you'd apparently stopped doing. Your lower back was prickling from the absence of his touch.

You watched him out of the corner of your eye, waiting for the pot to beep, and pouring out two mugs, handing you one before taking a sip of his own.

"Thanks." You said, taking a bite of your toast. "Sleep okay?"

"Hmm." He grunted. "Best I have for a while." He added with a raised eyebrow, still staring at the floor and having some more coffee. "You should stay over more often."

"Ha, yeah." You muttered with an empty chuckle as you fought a weird feeling in your stomach. "You doing much today?" You asked, trying to change the subject.

"Ned texted last night that he was gonna head over this morning, see if we could find any more about that girl. Although I suppose we have a new angle now." He looked at you, and you nodded. "We'll try and see if there's anything about where Adam's been spending his time."

"Thanks." You said. Peter's toast popped, and you moved to the side to let him grab it, as you munched on your own.

"We'll have a look through Adam's profiles until he finishes work, and see what he can find. Although I don't think there'll be much, otherwise you would have spotted it by now."

"Would I?" You huffed, just feeling defeated about this whole thing now.

"What do you mean?"

"I mean," You straightened up and looked at him. "I didn't notice anything up until recently. And apparently he's making friends I don't know about, not working and galavanting around. I probably saw things but didn't realise." You finished your toast and drank your coffee. "I guess just let me know if you find anything. I'm working late today and won't be finished til 5pm tomorrow so I'm not sure how much help I can be."

"Well I can always follow him after work today and see where he goes?" Peter offered.

"That's nice, but he knows who you are, so unless you have a disguise, I don't think it would work."

"I can...be pretty sneaky if I need to be." Peter said cautiously.

"You know who we should ask?" You said as you laughed. "That Spiderman guy." Peter's heart lurched. "He's always jumping around, he could spot Adam a mile off I reckon."

"Y-yeah. That's certainly an idea."

"Doesn't he work with Stark? Under the whole Avengers thing? Ask Stark if he can give me his phone number." You chuckled, getting quite invested in your wildly unrealistic idea. "I'll just give him a call, and be like 'Hey, dude, can you parkour over to Richmond and spy on my boyfriend?'"

"It's not really parkour, it's-"

"I know. Either way. Might be something to ask your boss about. It would save us a lot of trouble."

You pushed yourself off the counter as Peter stayed quiet, and stretched your arms over your head.

"Right," You huffed, "Well, I better get going." You headed off to the bedroom to grab your things, while Peter watched your retreating figure.

Every day that passed with you and him working on this scheme to prove Adam's wrongdoings was making Peter regret the fact that you didn't know his biggest secret. One side of it was the fact that this whole thing was about Adam lying to you, and Peter hated that he wasn't so different in that sense.

The other side was that he cared about you, and he wanted you to know. But he knew there were dangers that came with that, like the possibility of you getting hurt in the crossfire, or an enemy using you to get to him.

He ran his hand through his hair as he wondered how long he could keep Spiderman a secret from you.
