PART 48
22:02, 24 August 2024Gu Wei was about to speak but his phone suddenly vibrated. He saw a message from Haoxuan and opened it.
"Wei², I forgot to tell you about the background check you asked for. She's a surgeon, and her family is wealthy. However, she left her family a long time ago to find his half-brother. In her last post about his brother, she mentioned that his sibling died before they could reunite, but she didn't mention any names." As Gu Wei read the message, his entire body suddenly went cold.
He put away his phone and looked at Mianmian, who was also looking at him. He adjusted his seat before speaking. "They just handed me the information they gathered about you. I ran a background check on you last night after Yibo's neighbors mentioned you. I didn't expect things to move so quickly that I'd meet you here." He paused and took a cigarette to calm himself, while Mianmian was left speechless by his straightforwardness.
"Do you mind if I smoke?" he asked politely. Mianmian just smiled at him. Before speaking again, he took a drag from his cigarette. "To answer your question, yes, I am Xiao Zhan," he said calmly. Mianmian was shocked and couldn't speak.
After a few seconds, she finally spoke. "Do you know Gu Wei, and why did you use his identity?" Gu Wei stood up. "First of all, I'm sorry for using his identity. I don't know him, nor have I met him, but my fiancé knows him." Mianmian frowned.
"Fiancé? So that's why that dumb Yibo refuses to have surgery," Mianmian thought. "I'll do my part, and then it's up to them to make their decision."
Meanwhile, A-yuan couldn't look directly at Eros, but no matter what Eros did, he couldn't read the expression on A-yuan's face. "You can tell me now if you know anything because I already know that your Nana and Gu Wei are the same person," Eros said softly.
"I'm sorry," A-yuan thought. "He told me that he was Xiao Zhan. At first, I couldn't accept it and didn't believe him, but when they explained what happened, I felt sorry for him." He paused. "Dad, why don't you talk to him if you already know the truth? He's not a bad person; he didn't leave us just because he wanted to." Yibo looked at A-yuan, and A-yuan could see the confusion on his father's face.
On the other hand, "I'm not happy that you're using the identity of a dead person, but I can't judge you without knowing the reason," she looked at Gu Wei. "But if this helps you accomplish what you want without being recognized, there's nothing I can do about it. However, there's something I want to tell you. Look, I don't know what you've been through, but I know what Yibo went through, and I can tell you it wasn't easy." She stopped when she saw Gu Wei's face turn red.
"I'm not trying to interfere, but if I were you, I'd talk to him so you both can understand what each of you has gone through," she said as she stood up and grabbed her suitcase. "Don't worry, I won't tell anyone what I found out, but please, talk to him. The person you're seeking revenge on might have suffered in silence too." She then walked towards the door.
"Please tell Chen Yu that I'm leaving for now. He can call me if he changes his mind," she said before finally stepping out of the house, leaving Gu Wei behind, staring blankly while gripping his cigarette tightly.
"Change his mind about what?" Gu Wei asked himself, sitting down while keeping his gaze fixed on the door. After a moment, he took his phone and called Haoxuan.
"I want you to find out why she became Yibo's doctor and why Yibo can't recognize people," Gu Wei said, startling the person on the other end of the line. "Slow down, I can't understand you. What do you mean Yibo can't recognize people?" Haoxuan asked, clearly confused. Gu Wei took a deep breath and explained everything that had happened earlier, including what A-yuan had mentioned about Yibo not recognizing him either. He tried to dismiss it as madness, but he couldn't get it out of his mind.
The other person on the line was speechless after Gu Wei recounted all that had transpired. "Just keep me updated," Gu Wei said, about to end the call when he heard Jiyang's voice. "We'll do everything we can to get the information, but why don't you consider the suggestion?" Jiyang paused and looked at Haoxuan, who nodded in agreement.
"You'll know more if you ask him directly," he added, hearing Gu Wei sigh on the other end. "But the final decision is still yours, Wei², and we'll do everything we can to help," he said, hanging up before Gu Wei could respond.
Meanwhile. "Dad, do you remember Uncle Superhero's friend from when I was a baby?" Eros looked at A-yuan, puzzled. "He's the one who kidnapped him." Eros suddenly grabbed his head as if it were splitting with pain. "How can I remember him if I can't even remember your face?" Eros asked himself, holding his head. "Dad, are you okay?" A-yuan asked worriedly, noticing Yibo's pale face and the cold sweat breaking out on his forehead.
Eros smiled. "I'm fine. Let's just go back home," he said, silently cursing himself because no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't remember the face of the man Zhan once called a friend. "I'm really worthless," he muttered to himself, as A-yuan helped him walk back home. "Dad, I think your friend is no longer at the house," A-yuan said, but Yibo didn't pay any attention, overwhelmed by the pain in his head.
Gu Wei went out to see where Eros and A-yuan were, he was surprised to see that A-yuan was struggling to walk while supporting Eros and immediately ran towards them.
"What's going on here?" He asked then helped A-yuan. "I don't know, but he suddenly got a headache" A-yuan said as they sped up their steps. After they got inside, Yibo ran to the room and locked the door. He sat on the floor holding his head.
After closing the door, Gu Wei and A-yuan looked at each other. "Mr. Wang, are you okay?" Gu Wei asked worriedly.
